Tommy Emmanuel has been, will be, and is a magician.
And he makes it look effortless. Like rolling a ball off a flat table.

Well that’s exactly it, isn’t it? They have cast civility off like a cicada’s shell, haven’t they?

She has been cast by the POTUS as an enemy of the state, and she has embraced it and jumped right into his grill.

It drives him nuts, because not one, not one single person in the WH, NOONE treats him that way.

Dog bless her. Would that the rest of the Democrats pushed back as hard as she does. Her testicular fortitude, (to hijack a wildly inappropriate term), is greater than the leaders of the House, and those worthies need to realize that that is the only successful way forward. If you want to beat this thug in the WH, you’ve got to slug him in the mouth. Every. Single. Day.

I just got back from the local bar up the road, listening to my “adopted” son and his group play. They rocked the building off its foundations, and left the dancers begging for more. I’ve heard him a lot, in a number of different groups. He is a drummer that makes people want to dance.

The Ukrainian crisis panic at the WH is spinning up to around 15,000 rpm. The general response to it as abba-da-abba-da-abba. They’ve got nothing. POTUS has been caught Dead Bang. It’s as impeachable as a Watergate cover up, but unless the Congressional leadership grows a spine and a set of stones, it’ll disappear by Wednesday, as a new outrage jumps out of the fever swamp of this hellish chaos of an organization supposedly running our country.

People in the deepest blue parts of blue states think “don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good” is some kind of sell-out compromise. They’re the Naderites and Jill Shills who refuse to see how much of our current mess is their fucking fault.

In future generations, a “Sarandon” will be a commonly-used adjectival noun. Like “Quisling” or “Vichy”. For texting purposes, they’ll be represented by an emoji of the underwater “But Her E-Mails” sign.

Because we can all blindly trust in “unnamed official briefed on the matter” in Trumpworld.

Here’s an idea: release the fucking whistle blowers report to the house, as the law requires. Then we can all determine it’s veracity.

But that won’t happen. Because…

Reasons.

Man accidentally kills himself while showing off swordsmanship during parade (goes to The Independent)

This is a part of a Shia Islam ceremony, to show both swordsmanship and mourn the murder of Husayan ibn Ali and his family (Husayan was the grandson of Mohamed). The ceremony is part of the Mourning of Muharran (the first month of the Islamic calendar) which lasts for ten days and ends on Ashura (literally, the tenth) ten days later.

In Iran, injuring yourself during this ceremony is unlawful. Blood-drawing is normally done outside Iran, and Shias outside the country frequently criticise Iranian Shias for not drawing blood.

The man died in Nalanda, India during the parade. The police are investigating.

The ceremony is sort of like Christian penitentes who have themselves nailed to crosses on Good Friday.

In the Shia Muslim religious act, the idea is the person is taking on the suffering of Hussayan; penitentes are demonstrating the same thing over Jesus.

A couple days ago when my wife and I went to Oshkosh to buy groceries, there was a business with a US Flag and a Trump/Pence flag from the same staff (that would be the same conservatives who claim they love the flag and don’t know crap about the US Flag Code).

One thing that does is show me what business not to shop at (but to be fair it was an agricultural equipment repair shop so I’m not likely to shop there anyway).

Sclerotic socialists are so unable to adapt to 2019.

Our issue today is hyper-nationalism, which has been fueled by changes in the world economy coming so quickly that the change leaves many people unable to deal with how fast their redundancy has hit him.

Corbyn’s mind is still back in the days of Maggie Thatcher.

The UK is suffering much what the US is, namely a period of rapid social change that is leaving large numbers of the native population afraid that they’re in danger of being rendered powerless. The historical precedent is when those populations fear such, they lash out towards whatever populations they fear are taking all the power and the parties they view as aiding such. In many ways it’s a generational issue, as the largest generations are also the ones slowly aging into oblivion, while the younger generation that’s embracing the change is smaller and less engaged.

re: #74 Targetpractice

Corbyn is so unable to counter the xenophobia because, frankly, the Labour party built its base on the industrial centers that have been hard hit and are the most xenophobic.

There is a parallel here, in which the Democratic party used to be based around labor unions, the remnants of which were then attracted to Reagan and finally Trump.

We humans evolved to think in timelines of days, maybe a month (see menstrual cycles), and to have networks of just a few dozen people.

Now we have global networks that sync up millions of people, and economic and social planning encompasses decades.

We’ve built a society, with our evolved language ability and the abstract thinking that comes with it, that is beyond our emotional ability.

Any leader who can counter that has to be especially savvy.

76
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Sep 22, 2019 • 5:44:56am

In the last Democratic debate, what was most transparent were those candidates who were working the old-unions angel, with statements about union members wanting to keep their health insurance (in opposition to a national single payer system.)

In the last Democratic debate, what was most transparent were those candidates who were working the old-unions angel, with statements about union members wanting to keep their health insurance (in opposition to a national single payer system.)

Understandably, as it seems that Trump won the electoral college because the old Democratic machine in union heavy states like MI and PA just didn’t work like the old days.

The Democratic party can’t be a national party just based on us tree-huggers out here in California.

What I saw at the last debate was the growing reality that the Dems just don’t have the political will to do more than tinker at the edges of the system. That there is just not the will to get out there and educate the voters on why continuing to hold onto the idea of individual insurance as the primary means of attaining healthcare is the reason why healthcare is so expensive in this country. Warren was about the only person on that stage who came close to the reality that businesses in this country have discovered that workers will accept low pay, piss-poor treatment, and loss of all their bargaining ability if you offer health insurance. And will even vote for pay cuts or worse treatment if it means that they can keep that insurance plan.

Ken Ham’s New Life-Size Tower Of Babel Reproduction Plagued With Construction Delays (goes to The Babylon Bee)

WILLIAMSTOWN, KY—Ken Ham is at it again! Following the success of Ark Encounter, the good folks at the Creation Museum have broken ground on their newest brainchild: The Tower of Babel.

“Everyone loves seeing Bible stories come to life,” said Ham, CEO of Answers in Genesis. “When we sat down to brainstorm about what to do next, we asked ourselves ‘what did Noah’s descendants do next?’ They built a huge tower!” This, of course, is excluding Ham’s failed project The Table of Nations, which was literally just a big table with names of nations written on it.

Even older Democrats are afraid of too much change. As much as people gripe about their health care, they know what it does. It’s easy for the GOP to play into the fear that change means destruction and loss. It can be hard to convince people that changing something they have worked hard to achieve can be replaced with something better without either proving it to them, or destroying what they have (which is what the Great Depression did).

Let’s not forget decades of austerity. I think that’s a bigger driver but what you said definitely applies.

My cat is weird. She’s not a box or container kitty. Catnip does nothing for her. She’s a left paw drinker out of the water fountain. And on work days (oh! she knows, because I roll out of bed before 6 am and take a shower), she insists on licking my hands after the shower. But I love her anyway.

She’s not going to like it very much when I move her from her current spot on the desk so I can set up for on call. (The work laptop goes where she’s sitting. But she’s a smart kitty. She knows that laptops are not to be stepped on.) One of my coworkers in NorCal got some 49ers tickets, so I took part of his Sunday on call so he could go to the game.

According to Newsweek, he was prescribed the medication in April to handle his depression in coping with his wife’s diagnosis of terminal cancer; when her treatments were successful, he tried stopping the drug on his own but suffered from terrible withdrawal symptoms. The real problem appears to be pharmaceutical companies who develop and market highly addictive and dangerous drugs and promote their prescription and overuse. For an anti-anxiety drug to be so addictive after fewer than 6 months seems irresponsible and indeed criminal practice by the companies that market it.

They’re full on intent on making it a crisis for Biden, which is just proof positive that the GOP can invent anything about a Dem and have it turned into major scandal that the media will cover endlessly just to avoid any sense that they just be ‘too hard on Trump’.

I’d never heard the drug addict accusation…

I do know, however, that Hunter Biden divorced his wife to marry his brother’s widow. So his nieces and nephews are now his stepchildren, and his kids and ex-wife have to be civil to him at family gatherings. That’s… pretty sketchy. I don’t know how a family gets past that.

Not only that, but while a small, short-lived conspiracy can be kept secret for a while, eventually someone will talk. People have revealed secrets about secret societies, the underworld, about cults. People get disilllusioned, retire, and are so eager to show what they know in order to impress people.

Think about aliens. There would be a fortune awaiting the first person that could come up with proof-so what if the Feds/M1-1/Whatever fired you? You could make up what you lost in earnings by writing a book, giving speeches and selling the evidence at auction. You would never have to work again for anybody.

Not to mention that there would be millions of scientists who would want to study the aliens-their biology, their technology, their culture. An alien would be the mother lode for all of this information-who would want it to go to waste by killing them?

Even if you buy the idea that maybe there’s a vast interest in not upsetting the religious applecart by revealing we are not alone, most real religions focus on ethics and morals and not on origin stories. Love thy Neighbor works even with aliens.

That’s one I’ve never understood. I’ve talked to Muslims before on the subject, and they conceded it’s entirely possible that God created life elsewhere in the Universe. Indeed, a couple of Muslims I know noted that the Qur’an doesn’t rule out extraterrestrial life, but may in fact even hint at the notion. Buddhists of my acquaintance certainly acknowledge that there may well be life out there that we’re currently unaware of and that maybe one of these days, we’d either find that life or it would find us.

Trump Claims 20 World Class Climbers Tested his Wall - World Class Climbers: “Huh?”

El Jefe on Juanita Jean

During Trump’s silly visit to his wall south of San Diego last week (the one where he tried to reveal secret sensing built into the wall), he made the remarkable claim that 20 world class mountain climbers tried and couldn’t climb it. The claim was bullshit, of course, like the virtually all of his claims. The press immediately tried to confirm Trump’s claim by…wait for it…talking to world class climbers. Said climbers said they had no knowledge of any climbers participating in any test of Trump’s wall, and even added that would help even if asked. They also gave the parting shot that the wall could be easily scaled.

LOL.

193
Targetpractice  Sep 22, 2019 • 10:41:26am

It’s been my experience that the larger a conspiracy, the more people that would have to be involved, and so the larger the likelihood that somebody somewhere would release credible evidence to the press. For example, one of my favorite bits about 9/11 was how it was missiles that hit those targets and not hijacked airliners. When I questioned a “Truther” about where the jets went, I got everything from “They were flown to a secret base and the people executed” to “THERE NEVER WERE ANY PASSENGERS!”

No matter which theory you believe, the number of people involved to maintain that conspiracy would make the certainty of some poor schlub getting paid chicken scratch going to the press damn near 100%.

No, I think it’s only a particular strain of Christianity, i.e., people who believe in special creation (either Old Earth or Young Earth Creationism IF they happen to be biblical inerrantists). Ken Ham, the Ayatollah of Appalachia, doesn’t believe there is any life out in the universe besides earth because God didn’t say so in the Bible.

I keep hoping they find microbes on Mars or Titan or Europa, just to blow these guys’ worldviews to bits.

re: #191 Dr Lizardo

It seems that only Christianity (and a certain segment of it) needs to have us be alone-and a short earth. If aliens exist, then the universe is older than 6000 years-after all the nearest star-while only 4 light years away, would take far more even as near-light speeds to get to us.

Also, what about the claim that Jesus only revealed his truth and sacrificed his body for earthlings? Did he die for the sins of aliens too?

Other religions seem to be cool with a universe that is old enough for aliens to somehow reach us.

A reminder: Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson blamed liberals for causing 9/11 because of our immoral ways. So did our friend Dinesh in his book The Enemy at Home. Their thesis really was that it was the lack of true religion that led to the attack because Muslims could not tolerate how our immorality was harming their religious traditions and modest behavior. So, whatever may be the current RW message, only a few years ago the same religious fanatics were promoting a different message about Islam

On Venus, Have We Got a Rabbi!

There’s apparently an actual rabbinic court that answers space questions.

If Sabbath is from sundown to sundown, does that mean on the space station Sabbath is only 90 minutes and it happens every 10.5 hours?
(answer: NO!! Sabbath on the space station follows Houston time. For Earthbound people where light/dark aren’t on a 24-hour cycle, Sabbath in Antarctica or above the Arctic circle follows your hometown sunset.)

If my great-great-grandson lives on Mars, how will he know when to observe Jewish holidays?
(answer: History holidays, like Hannukah or Purim or Shoah day, follow the Earth calendar. Season holidays, like New Year or a harvest festival, will follow a to-be-created Martian calendar. Sabbath is still every 7th day, even though the days are a slightly different length.)

Weak

The WaPo article on this interview is much less weak:washingtonpost.com

I had not realized that Schiff has been opposed to impeachment. Last quote in the article:

Schiff is also a close ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who has been an impeachment skeptic and put the House on a path of turning to the courts to enforce subpoenas that the administration has ignored.
Yet, on Sunday, Schiff appeared to suggest Pelosi’s impulse to look to the courts would not do in this instance. The inspector general of the intelligence community has deemed the whistleblower allegation to be “urgent,” which, under law, should have triggered the administration to turn it over to Congress.
The administration refused.
“We cannot afford to play rope-a-dope in the court for weeks or months on end,” he said. “We need an answer. If there’s a fire burning, it needs to be put out. And that’s why we’re going to have to look at every remedy. . . . We’re going to have to consider impeachment, as well, as remedy here.”

“Troubling” exists to cover doing nothing about what is ongoing, while “thoughts and prayers” exists to close discussion of what has already happened but will prompt no action or thought.

People will have to post videos to Twitter and Facebook like it’s been done for other marches.

re: #228 A Mom Anon

And start hammering the media social media with video and pics asking why the hell it’s not making the news when a couple dozen nazis in their stupid MAGA hats do.

I mean….judging from my timeline, that’s exactly what most of the people attending the marches do. The problem is that it doesn’t pierce the veil, precisely because the great guardians of the narrative simply don’t want it to pierce the veil. It’s becoming clear that there’s no amount of effort that’ll be enough to reach that breaking point. And god help me, I wish I knew how to get around that or counteract that. But seeing what should be no-duh impeachment level malevolence being yet again turned into ‘bad news for Democrats’ by the united front of mainstream media…I’m just losing hope of seeing any breakthrough moment.

Mitt Romney

@MittRomney
If the President asked or pressured Ukraine’s president to investigate his political rival, either directly or through his personal attorney, it would be troubling in the extreme. Critical for the facts to come out.

Other than gender and net worth, is there any difference between Susan Collins and Mitt Romney? Asking for a “friend”.

White kids get calls from principals to medicate their kids, at least that’s what happened to us when The Kid was a little guy and the school had nothing in place for autistic kids. Or an even basic understanding of autism. When a kid has a meltdown it’s often sensory overload which is a sign of autism or other similar neurological type differences. I’d be suing the everloving fuck out of some one over this. It’s not just unnecessary it shows a complete lack of understanding ANY kid, not just one with a sensory issue.

Christians spent CENTURIES, and I do mean CENTURIES trying to figure out when to celebrate Easter. You’d think it would be as simple as “uhm, around the same time as when Jews celebrate Passover,” but NOPE. There’s a whole article about the Easter controversy in Wikipedia:

en.wikipedia.org

which leads down one path to Quartodecimanism
en.wikipedia.org

and then another path to “computus”, which is specifically about how to compute the date of Easter.
en.wikipedia.org

Many, many, many, many years of time were spent on this. *rolls eyes*

They’re related. Some of the most staunch promoters of Calvinism in the Southern Baptist Convention, like R.L. Dabney, were also slaveowners and staunch defenders of slavery. It should come as no surprise that some neo-Calvinists love them some Dabney and defend his utter horseshit.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Fine. We’ll do it two weeks after then.”

“No! That’s too far away from Christmas!”

“Oh for fuck sakes! Then how about the third Friday in April each year?”

“No. Will be during Passover some years. Remember, fuck Jews!”

“So you’re saying we should pick a different day every damn year for Easter??”

“Yes, would be the easiest way.”

“No. No, it wouldn’t. Because I just gave you THREE EASIER FUCKING WAYS and you shot them all down!”

“Yes, because, fuck Jews!”

Ironically, for all the hooraw about settling the date of Easter, we don’t know exactly when Jesus was executed. Nor do we know for certain whether the Last Supper was a Passover meal (synoptic gospels) or something else, not specified (John). Apparently the earliest followers of Jesus didn’t find that to be especially important. I would suspect it became an issue once nascent Christianity was irreparably separated from Judaism, and for the reason you suggest.

We had them asking us to institutionalize our son (adopted from Vietnam so non-white.). Then Madison put in place rules that said anyone in middle-school and up that they called the cops about HAD to be taken to Juvie. We moved north at that point. The policy lasted till a White “A+” cheerleader girl with good PR got arrested for one of the usual bullshit reasons and her rich parents sued the shit out of the district. But the city still has a huge expensive juvie facility that they essentially expect the school district to keep full with minority and poor students in the pipeline to prison.

One thing I’ll say about Hayward is that even though they did have to call the cops on John a couple of times, the cop always was the voice of reason, discretion and deescalation. They would wait for us, between us all we’d get it sorted (and the school would sometimes admit a given teacher was the problem) and he’d end up going home for the day. After we finally got him into residential therapy for a year, these problems ended but it took us going to court and getting a court order before the state would pay for his therapy even though he was on Badgercare by then.
