Video: Greta Thunberg’s Scathing Speech to the United Nations: “How Dare You?”

Environment • Views: 33,985

YouTube

This is really something, folks. I doubt the UN was expecting Greta Thunberg to be this ferocious. It’s undoubtedly the most powerful UN speech I’ve ever seen.

Activist Greta Thunberg said “the eyes of all future generations” fall upon world leaders during the U.N. climate meeting on Sept. 23. Read more: wapo.st.

UPDATE at 9/23/19 2:31:20 pm by Charles Johnson

New video just posted shows a security officer holding Greta Thunberg back as the Trump-thing arrived at the UN climate summit. Not sure if this was before or after that speech, but they clearly had her on a watch list.

It’s going to be easy for a lot of the people in the audience to dismiss her as an emotional youth. Other’s will have to make sure she’s not the only one saying this.

There was a shift, that started in the 1980s and accelerated in the 1990s when everyone started getting degrees in Business Administration, that the correct form of corporate governance went from a stakeholder view to shareholder primacy.

Under the stakeholder model the CEO and board of directors considered the views and potential benefits of action for all stakeholders (meaning customers, employees (both labor and management), shareholders, and even the local community). But under the shareholder primacy model, the only thing that matters is ROI for shareholders and usually in the immediate quarterly reports. There’s no consideration of long term goals or health of the business beyond the next dividend payment and what the stock price is.

It makes a whole lot more sense. Unfortunately it’s rarely taught, and how we have arrived in a world where Human Resources departments are now being referred to as Human Capital… because you, as an employee, are as important as a truck or computer.

33
KGxvi  Sep 23, 2019 • 3:19:59pm

I should add: the stakeholder model is what most small businesses and closely held corporations still use. When your entire income and quality of life depends on your business running for 20+ years, you tend to care about things like relationships with vendors. The shareholder primacy theory is really only used by publicly traded businesses.

To force a change is going to take some shareholder activism, but I’m not sure there’s much of a movement for that… yet.

It has all the elements of a horror movie: an unsuspecting Christian couple adopts an adorable little girl only to discover she is an adult sociopath masquerading as a child.

Police say the girl was left to fend for herself for three years despite having a rare form of dwarfism that means she is 3ft tall and has problems walking.

But in an exclusive interview with DailyMailTV at an undisclosed location, Kristine insists there’s a major flaw in their case: Natalia was not a nine year old - as charging documents claim - she was actually 22.

Barnett claims the true victims are her and her family who were terrorized for years by the mysterious impostor who threatened to stab them in their sleep, pushed her towards an electric fence and poured bleach in her coffee.

Vatnost - Why the West can’t Understand Russia

So this is four years olds and purportedly describes something Russian, but starting with this paragraph:

Aside from drinking, the vatnik craves “stability,” the magic word Putin trotted out during his 2012 presidential campaign. Of course the vatnik doesn’t get stability; he got steadily rising prices and a flagging economy exacerbated in severity thanks to Putin’s policies. Nevertheless, the vatnik doesn’t want to rock the boat because that precious stability he never receives might be imperiled. People who value things such as personal freedom, prosperity, or actual stability over non-existent stability are viewed as national traitors by the vatnik. Protest? Protesting doesn’t solve anything! The proper Russian tradition is to constantly complain while not doing anything to rock the boat. It’s not that the vatnik is satisfied with Russian society; he’s absolutely livid about every real or imagined problem the country has. Yet if asked, he’s happy to declare his love of Putin, even if it is slightly less than his love for Putinka. Something to keep in mind when reading about the president’s approval rating.

It all sounds rather familiar. Just change around some proper names and national adjectives.

Odd seeing The Intercept defend Biden. I tend to believe the anti corruption activist. Trump is definitely eager to take out Biden. Biden isn’t my first choice by a long shot but I think Trump does fear him in the sense that Biden more than any candidate running can defend the Obama administration that Trump lies repeatedly about.

I think that is a padded bra formed to look like pointy nipples. Like she thinks this could be a trend or something (I just threw up in my mouth)

I find the non-matching/wrinkled/hideous/inappropriate skirt even more heinous than the too tight/hideous blouse. But that’s just me. (If it weren’t for bad taste, those Trump women would have no taste at all.)

You don’t go to the UN representing a govt (no matter how illegitimate your representation is) wearing a blouse that shows nips.

Why are we discussing what (if any) underwear Ivanka is wearing? Of all the things she could (and should) be shamed for, having nipples is not one of them.

I’m kind of inclined to think that we should criticize how the royal family represents us, especially in matters of state.

It appears that you are correct. She closed down her clothes line in 2018 and reports are that the overstock ran out 6 months later.

In scanning the original tweet, I saw this “Her apron (part of The Ivanka Collection) is available at Amazon”. It did not register that the original post was snark. Or as in my case ‘sarchasm’.

But this is yet another example of why this 65 year old male generally tries to not comment about female fashion.

Save your money then (and carry an iron…or have Hope accompany you with her steamer.)

Just to clear things up:

She was at the Concordia Summit, down the street from the UN.

It was a skirt, not an apron (the tweet about her baking cookies in the UN kitchen was snark)

The skirt was a Prada number that goes for $2,130.

Lara was with her, but dressed a bit more appropriately, so nobody dissed her poor taste.

Turns out the reporting I was referring to was a “mistake” and her drek was “mis-relabeled” not actually being produced under a new label..

Vogue UK confirmed that some Ivanka Trump pieces were relabeled under the Adrienne Vittadini brand before they were distributed in Steinmart stores (those respective brands have different distributors). However, it is well established that excess designer inventory is regularly sold off to off-price retailers, and for a variety of reasons.

Why Democratic Candidates Should Defend Biden
by Nancy LeTourneau, Washington Monthly

So now we have Trump saying, “Sure, I did it. So what?” As expected, his supporters are buying it. Meanwhile, there are those on the extreme left who are joining with Trump’s enablers and some media outlets to suggest that Biden is compromised. That is exactly what one of Trump’s advisors was referring to when they told Maggie Haberman that, given Trump’s low approval numbers, he needs voters to feel negatively about his opponents. In 2016 Trump won voters who viewed both candidates unfavorably by about a two to one margin.

At this point, every Democratic candidate should be unapologetically defending Biden against these allegations. We’re seeing the Trump playbook in action—and it’s a repeat of exactly what his campaign did in 2016. If someone other than Biden goes on to become the nominee, they are guaranteed to get the same treatment. It is time to speak up loudly with one voice and say, “it’s not going to work this time.”

182

Sorry, Charles, you fell prey to a bit of a generation gap in young activist circles. I’ve spent the last seven years in online fandom spaces full of young, roughly college-aged people - mostly of a liberal left persuasion and they’re operating from a different set of default cultural assumptions than you and I are.

They are quick to take offense, they are quick to judge, and they are quick to demand that we “check out (unexamined and often white, straight, and male) privilege.”

There are new rhetorical rules in operation. One of those is that you do not weaponize a woman’s appearance against her, ever - especially if you have a penis. It doesn’t matter how vile her actions, her appearance and fashion choices are off limits.

If called out on an inadvertently sexist and judgemental post, don’t defend it and don’t engage. It’s a battle you will not win. Either delete the tweet, or apologize and thank them for enlightening you and suggest that you’ll try to do better in the future, then delete the offending tweet.
