The Constitution specifically prohibits the passage of ex post facto laws. The same likely goes for rules and regs as well, which means if the State Dept under Pompeo tries to punish, fire, or criminally charge any current/former staffer for how they handled retroactively classified materials, they’re gonna find themselves in a world of legal pain.

THIS is what a witch hunt looks like, when you knowingly go looking for people to punish for things that are not crimes.

Apparently republicans are going with the “lie like crazy and count on TV news to report it as a matter of disagreement” strategy.

Probably an 80% chance it works.

The failure of the “terror caravans” rhetoric of the 2018 election gives me some hope that people are starting to tune these things out.

I think the thing I find most interesting about drumming is that while most instruments are mainly focused on fine motor skills, percussion is the one discipline that emphasizes large motor skills. The physical effort to make it through a set is incredible.

Drumpf keeps getting meaner, and smaller. He has always been that asshole, who, when criticized, punches his detractors in the mouth. Threatens them. Attacks them in the press. Sues them. Pure Roy Cohn bluster. But he can’t do that anymore.

I don’t think he has ever really understood how his present job differs from his previous Exalted Position as a Business and Real Estate Tycoon.

He hasn’t changed at all, even though his job as Chief Executive of the USA has no parallel with anything he has done before. He bulldozed his way into the WH and just did what he had always done: belittled, threatened, bullied, lied, and plotted revenge against his perceived enemies. He never understood that there were inherent checks and limits on his actions.

His staff has desperately tried to clean up the messes he has left behind, like the crew following the elephants in a Ringling Brother’s parade, but they made a disastrous decision and put phone records under a number-coded server at Fort Dietrich, not realizing that that server (oh, the irony! A secret server!) was out of their actual control.

Of course it was going to come out. Why wouldn’t the House Intelligence Committee want to hear the conversations between the Bloody Butcher of Riyadh and the Rat Fucker in Moscow? Duh!

Now he has been caught in his monumental failure of hubris and ignorance, which has been, frankly, the sum of his tenure, and there is no stopping that Titanic before it hits the fucking iceberg, (so he starts blaming the joos! and the brown womenz because that’s all he’s got left).

Turns out he was completely out of his element, which would be kind of sad and pitiful if he wasn’t such a viscous fucking asshole who deserves whatever he gets. Fuck him like he has fucked so may other people, and give it to him good and hard.

You are talking about rock and roll drumming. I respectfully suggest that you go to YouTube and watch a performance of Roush’s Blocks of Wood to see what Percussionists do. Also, any marimba concerto you happen to kick up. The Bartok is killer bee.

Joe Bonamassa travels the world playing with some of the finest talent you could wish to see. And on his off days he goes on Guitar Safari to seek out vintage guitars and amps.
He has people meet him at his shows with unbelievably cherry guitars from their dad or grandfather. One owner gems. Bedroom classics. He recently picked up Hoyt Axtons Dumble Overdrive. Has guitars from a slew of blues stars. He collects what he plays and sooner or later most of them will on stage with him somewhere. Played. Loved. He flys guitars back in their own seats at times. Has one hell of a network. Follow him on Instagram to watch the magic.
And see him at least once in your life.
He’s a collector and one day there will be a museum bearing his name.

Well another right winger did something very naughty!

Instead of using $17,300 in government checks to pay for the care of her mother who was ravaged by dementia, Turk used the money for herself, a federal attorney said.

WEST PALM BEACH - Fresh from hosting a fund-raiser for the legal defense of Republican operative Roger Stone, conservative media commentator Karyn Turk on Friday admitted she stole her 83-year-old mother’s Social Security checks.

Looking relaxed and unperturbed, Karyn Turk pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to a single charge of Social Security fraud. Turk, who was crowned Mrs. Florida 2016 and touts her involvement in charities, faces a maximum one-year jail term and possible $100,000 fine when she is sentenced on Dec. 13.

Honestly, it would be more accurate to characterize any “opinion” offered by a person who has not read the “transcript” or complaint as hearsay, because they are largely repeating what others told them than what they personally know.

Or one could simply point out that without articles of impeachment, there is no formal trial and thus the only court that is currently examining evidence is that of the “court of public opinion.” And that we know wingnuts don’t want that court to ever bar hearsay, because if it did they would never win a case.

re: #60 dog philosopher ஐஒஔ௸

Here’s what will happen: The entire dynamic of the 2020 elections will be changed.

There will no longer be a question of if Trump will be impeached, as it will have already happened and he only avoided removal through a party-line vote.

Repubs running for reelection will face not questions about their position in the event of hypothetical impeachment, but their actual votes for/against impeachment and removal.

The party itself will have had millions in campaign funds ripped from their coffers by lawyers and consultants in the impeachment fight, money that would have otherwise funded down-ticket races where the party is facing tightening odds.

And the narrative of the election will not be one of a president under fire, but of an impeached president who is seeking reelection by a public that has had months to marinate in the totality of his criminal actions.

Boris is acting more Trumpian every day:

Boris Johnson ‘will collapse government’ if he can’t agree Brexit deal

Boris Johnson will demand his whole Cabinet resigns as a final attempt to get a General Election, according to a new report.

The Prime Minister is apparently prepared to collapse government if he does not manage to negotiate a Brexit deal at a summit with the EU by October 18.

[…]

Nothing quite like an offer a person can’t refuse, eh?

Boris Johnson rejects claim his language incites violence, saying he has been ‘model of restraint’

[…]

When Marr put it to him that there was something dark and “very 1930s” about the Mail on Sunday splash (see 9am), which accuses Johnson’s critics of “collusion”, using a word used by a Number 10 source in a statement to the paper, Johnson said he did not agree with Marr’s description. But he accepted there was a need for people to calm down. He said:

I certainly think everybody should calm down.

Asked if that included him, he replied:

I think I’ve been a model of restrain.

Because of course it’s never the dictator-wannabe who is inciting violence.

A Brexit Party MEP has been stripped of the whip over fears he may have acted for “personal gain”.

But if Farage gets zero, Republicans here must be deep into the negative credit hole.

(I know some people here don’t like re-posting tweets, but it’s the only way I’ve figured out to post previews to articles. Is there a way I’m not getting?)

Two ways:

a1) Go to the bottom of the tweet in question and click on that tweet. That opens the article at the original site.
a2) Copy and paste the appropriate information in the LGF comment edit box.

Bernie Sanders’s record on gun control, explained

a3) Sometimes a URL from the site will have a ? followed by information showing it came from a social media site like Faceborg or Twittler. You can delete everything from the ? on and remove the trackback to the social media site.
a4) If you wish, copy and paste enough of the article to give the gist of what it says (but not the whole article, that would be a copyright violation rather than fair use).
a5) Optionally, you can put after the title which appeared where it came from (Goes to Vox, more at the link)

b1) If the tweet shows a link something like t (dot) co/bunch of numbers and letters, click that, which will open the article at the original site.
b2) Go to a2 and complete the rest of those steps.

WATCH: Massive Elk Attacks Two Visitors, Damages Truck In A Colorado Park (Goes to Huffington Post)

It is elk mating season in Colorado, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Male elk are very aggressive at this time.

A couple was attacked by a bull elk in Estes Park when crowds gathered to look at the elk in the park. (Note: Wild animals are wild. Stay a long distance away from them, no matter how cute you think they are.)

A park ranger rushed ahead with a pickup truck to put it between the elk and the man and woman on the ground being attacked. The elk then attacked the pickup truck.

Plenty of gawkers were standing around as they were being attacked, unsure what to do (and breaking out cell phones to make videos, such as the one in the HP article. Side note, isn’t there criminal penalties on the books yet for vertical video?)

Christian Identity wingnut preacher Matt Shea (Washington Republican representative who threatened the state police with murder) has published a “manifesto” calling for Biblical holy war. (CI Nazis are dangerous people who want “socialists,” Jews, Muslims, and atheists executed, and I have one of those churches near me in Scottsbluff and they know who I am.)

It is a stupid manifesto. He has no understanding of how a military actually works, how financing a war works, how weapons work (the only good part of this), &c.

He calls for a worldwide crusade in the name of Christ (that is, against everyone who is a not a wingnut).

The Christian Identity movement has no leadership or hierarchy over its churches, much like independent Baptist (but not NIFB) churches.

The FBI has declared the CI church movement to be a terrorist threat, but no individual churches (because First Amendment).

I don’t understand Washington state law, and don’t understand why they don’t eject Matt Shea from the state House of Representatives.

His manifesto calls first for making war on the portions of the United States which are not “under God’s law” (defining “tyrants” as “not Christian”). That would be advocating for overthrow of a state government, the federal government, and murder of citizens. Every state has a treason clause in its constitution.

Boris Johnson rapidly aiming to out-Trump Trump:

Boris Johnson refuses to rule out declaring emergency to force through no-deal Brexit

Boris Johnson has refused to rule out declaring an emergency to force through no-deal Brexit.

The Prime Minister failed to deny ministers could use civil contingency powers to suspend the Benn Act. “I’m not going to get into a hypothetical situation,” he told the BBC’s Andrew Marr.

MPs passed the Benn Act this month which forces the Prime Minister to ask for a three-month delay to the Brexit date - if there’s no agreement by October 19, straight after an EU summit.

MPs increasingly believe Downing Street is considering using the Civil Contingencies Act 2004, which grants special powers in the event of a national emergency, as a way to override the Benn act.

At least The Mirror is willing to use the word “lie”, unlike most American media:

4 lies or half-truths Boris Johnson just told on the BBC’s Andrew Marr Show

A Famous Argument Against Free Will Has Been Debunked (Goes to The Atlantic, more at the link):

For decades, a landmark brain study fed speculation about whether we control our own actions. It seems to have made a classic mistake.

The death of free will began with thousands of finger taps. In 1964, two German scientists monitored the electrical activity of a dozen people’s brains. Each day for several months, volunteers came into the scientists’ lab at the University of Freiburg to get wires fixed to their scalp from a showerhead-like contraption overhead. The participants sat in a chair, tucked neatly in a metal tollbooth, with only one task: to flex a finger on their right hand at whatever irregular intervals pleased them, over and over, up to 500 times a visit.

The purpose of this experiment was to search for signals in the participants’ brains that preceded each finger tap. At the time, researchers knew how to measure brain activity that occurred in response to events out in the world—when a person hears a song, for instance, or looks at a photograph—but no one had figured out how to isolate the signs of someone’s brain actually initiating an action.

The article goes on to explain how neurologists, psychologists, and philosophers all got the interpretation of early brainwave experiments interpreted the data incorrectly for decades, making the argument that free will does not exist.

This does not prove that free will does exist. It only falsifies the experiments from 1964. It could still be true that free will does not exist, and you could set up an experiment to prove it. But for now, the question’s answer remains “we don’t know.”

I just raised the Gold Star flag in the village park, replacing the POW flag.

Today is Gold Star Mothers and Families Day.

My condolences to Joe Bacon on this day, and others who I am not aware are Gold Star Family members.

President Donald Trump has issued a proclamation as required by law for today, found on the White House’s proclamations Website.

Presidential Proclamation on Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, 2019

Text hidden behind the hide bar, as the text is somewhat long.

Every life lost in service to our country is precious and irreplaceable. Our deepest sympathy, utmost respect, unwavering support, and profound gratitude go to the families who must endure the ongoing pain of such loss. On Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day, we solemnly honor these families and pray for their continued strength and courage.

Since the founding of our Republic, our liberty has been defended by our men and women in uniform. Their love of country and devotion to duty represent the very best of America. Our Nation’s military families share in the demands and pressures of this noble calling. The cost is exceedingly high — with multiple deployments, relocations, and separations — but the sobering price of their sacrifice is most clearly seen in the families who have faced the life-altering loss of a father, mother, son, daughter, sister, or brother who died fighting for our freedom.

Because of tragedies that forever change the course of their lives, these families receive the designation of the Gold Star. Each story is unique; each death is profoundly personal. The fallen leave behind families who must learn to carve out a new future while coping with their loved one’s absence on holidays, at celebrations, and during everyday activities. Their pain permeates every facet of life, never fully fading.

Yet, in spite of their challenges and heartbreak, Gold Star families exemplify amazing grace and resilience. From the depths of grief, they emerge to find hope, purpose, and joy, serving as an example and a source of inspiration for others. These patriots know the true cost of freedom, and it is the responsibility of all Americans to stand alongside them and share in shouldering this profound burden.

The Congress, by Senate Joint Resolution 115 of June 23, 1936 (49 Stat. 1895 as amended), has designated the last Sunday in September as “Gold Star Mother’s Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim Sunday, September 29, 2019, as Gold Star Mother’s and Family’s Day. I call upon all Government officials to display the flag of the United States over Government buildings on this special day. I also encourage the American people to display the flag and hold appropriate ceremonies as a public expression of our Nation’s gratitude and respect for our Gold Star Mothers and Families.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this twenty-seventh day of September, in the year of our Lord two thousand nineteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-fourth.

On a side note, the title as it appears in the proclamation is in fact misspelt on the Website (family’s is the misspelling, as the day is an observance of multiple families, not one).

Just a little nitpick, but something as basic as an annual proclamation which has been issued for an observance which exists in law from 1936, you’d think they could get that much right.

The entire stupid right wing hearsay argument in a nutshell.

[Embedded content]

let me get this off my chest (ianal):

none of this matters - who wrote it, how well, second hand, etc
over and over i’ll say it
it doesnt matter how this info got out
and no one really cares (except for the political posturing by the R’s who are trying to blow it up)

this isnt law and order, csi or whatever tv show

there is no chain of custody, rules of evidence, miranda etc
nothing gets ‘excluded’ because it was somehow ‘wrongfully’ or unfairly obtained or its provenance cant be confirmed

the only thing that’s happened is with what it thinks it knows, congress (the house) has decided to conduct an impeachment investigation. there doesnt even need to be credibility here (though the DNI and IG DID need to assess credibility). now that it’s out *it doenst matter.*

and yes there are - sort of - rules about the investigation itself going forward

there are no rules about WHY / WHEN they decided to start an investigation OR WHAT their decision was based on (if anything at all) even going forward, what they learn, what comes out what they say - on tv, in hearings as questions - how they’re answered - etc, are still only part of the investigation process. and again nothing gets exclude because who said it or how it was obtained.

when / if the senate trial happens, *then* stuff will be ruled on as admissible or not.

there’s no ‘getting off on a legal technicality’ because something was somehow illegally obtained, etc. no tree to be poisonous fruit of (at this stage)

All of the stupid hearsay arguments don’t even apply to formal criminal investigations.

If I’m in the county seat, and I hear someone tell me they overheard a different group of people talking about knocking over the bank (and gave descriptions of the people—maybe even I know them from the descriptions, a description of the proposed getaway pickup or SUV, &c), and I reported it to the sheriff, he would at least look into it.

If that results in the sheriff uncovering an actual plot to knock over the bank, he’s going to arrest them. The evidence of the plot was obtained lawfully, and would hold up in court.

The Federal Rules of Evidence (what’s admissible in a court proceeding) also has a whole slew of exceptions to “no hearsay evidence.”

Since it has been widely reported that Trump would lose in the Senate if they don’t take a roll-call vote, it seems to me that McConnell might be able to rig the vote requirements to suppress which Republican voted against Trump, which would result in Pence becoming president - and you can bet that Pence would issue a blanket pardon on Trump.

We are not going to win Republicans that view the AR-15 as something they cannot live without no matter what we do. And they’re a minority in this country anyway, even among Republicans. But I work with reasonable Republicans who don’t think that people should have AR-15s and they’re still not going to vote for Democrats. So we do the right thing by banning them, and we get Democrats to vote.

Just a little nitpick, but something as basic as an annual proclamation which has been issued for an observance which exists in law from 1936, you’d think they could get that much right.

Trump can take that proclamation and shove it up his five deferment chickenhawk bone spurs ass.

I thought I saw a blurb where some drug manufacturers have a treatment for Dupuytren’s.

There is a drug which can be injected into the contractures, then after they weaken some, the fingers are forced straight, snapping the contracture and allowing normal movement.

The injections require a high degree of skill, because the same drug will also dissolve tendons directly underneath the contracture, disabling the fingers controlled by those tendons.

As such, the drug manufacturer requires special training by physicians who wish to employ this treatment for patients, and there are few physicians trained in the drug’s use.

Moreover, the drug does not remove the contracture (whereas surgery does). Additionally, it still doesn’t help with the weakened muscles and deformed joints.

My hand troubles are why I haven’t played my hammered dulcimer since May of last year (and that doesn’t require a whole lot of manipulation with my fingers), though my typing speed is quite a bit better than it used to be.

For finer things with my fingers (such as cutting my food), my wife still has to do that for me.

Obama still won twice.

The 2010 midterms where the GOP took control did not arise from “Democrats are coming for your guns” fear-mongering, but a slew of state constitutional amendments and “Democrats are going to let you gay-marry your Roomba.”

True, perhaps: but marcus’ point is a valid one: regardless of polls showing public “support” for various gun-control proposals: said support (AFAICT) tends to fall off when those proposals extend beyond simple paperwork issues; or, at most, a renewal of the the old assault-rifle ban.
The big(ger) issue (as I see it) is that the gun-nut bloc “out there” has spent many decades being bombarded with propaganda (and bombarding themselves with propaganda) hysterically flogging an extremist slippery-slope argument regarding ANY issue that can be spun as “gun control”: i.e. that any and all such proposals, however worded, and however limited, are insidious attempts by “domestic enemies” to disarm “patriotic” Americans for evil reasons, and that forcible uncompensated confiscation of ALL firearms in private hands is the main (and ONLY) endpoint they can envision, and thus any and all suggestions for controlling guns must be fought as vigorously and as absolutely as possible, and shot down (pun intended) wherever they arise.
Yes, of course a voluntary buyback program for assault weapons doesn’t come near the sort of “confiscation” the nuts may fear: but when the counter-“argument” to even the sanest proposal for weapons control is almost invariably

THEIR COMIN TO TAKE AR GUNZ AWAY!!!!11!!!1!!!

the message tends to get lost in the noise.

Banning AR-15s and others is as far as anyone is going to go. Since we already had an assault weapons ban. Again with the “confiscation”. Nobody is going to have theirs taken as long as they are safely stored. This is about buy-backs mostly and incentives to get rid of the things. When a ban on assault weapons are in place, the only ones that will get taken are “red flag” guns, stolen ones and such. There were no widespread confiscations back in 1994 and there won’t be now, even if only because resources are limited and there’s no reason to take things from peaceful people.

Assault weapons are the easiest not to justify. Who needs a gun that can kill a dozen people in less than a minute?

It’s probably going to be about Hillary Clinton’s emails, Biden’s foreign entanglements and the epic final triumph of the best President ever over the Democrats and the deep state. Unless the economy crashes.

So our weekly conversation yesterday with our Texas brother briefly devolved into a shouting match, but it all ended on a congenial note — where we switched to other issues that didn’t involve Trump.

My brother obviously gets some daily briefing that provides the standard GOP talking points. He started with some 1999 agreement with Ukraine — and then ranted about how all the Democrats were going to be wearing orange jump suits and how criminal and depraved Hunter Biden was and then lambasted those unelected government bureaucrats. I think the last part was probably tied to the “deep state” theory and the necessity of purging anyone who doesn’t worship Trump, but we changed topics and didn’t pursue that line.

However a non-Trump part of the conversation was a revelation of what the GOP wants: my brother lavished praise on Singapore for being wealthy and crime-free, a paradise on earth with a content population who live very comfortably. When I mentioned the part that they are basically a dictatorship without freedom — he shrugged and thought that was irrelevant. The entire GOP really doesn’t care about personal freedom, especially free speech.

Yep. This is just one of the reasons I support making all semi-automatic firearms with removable magazines Class III National Firearms Act weapons.

In the 20s & 30s we had a major problem with criminal use of machine guns. We did not “ban” them or go around confiscating them all. We did regulate the beep out of them very successfully. We can and should do the same kind of regulation of the kinds of firearms that are seeing the same level of criminal abuse now.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area on the eve of Rosh Hashana. May all the Jewish lizards have a sweet and healthy new year and may you be inscribed in the Book of Life. The Moroccan brisket is in the oven, and the chicken will soon follow. The house is really starting to smell like the holidays….

Meanwhile… Trumpworld is doing all it can to retcon crimes for what Obama era officials did. How are they trying to pull this bulkshit? Simple. They’re retroactively classifying information and emails that were not classified when those officials touched them.

It’s malicious and they think that this somehow damns the Obama/Biden/Clinton folks, when all it does is add to the counts of obstruction and conspiracy against the US. You don’t get a pass on Trump crimes by deflecting and dodging by pointing to a wholly invented set of acts by those who committed no crimes. But we’ve got these fuckers on the Sunday shows getting to spread this conspiracy crap. Todd in particular is allowing this to skip on by.

Chris Wallace is doing a better job of holding GOPers accountable than Todd. That’s such a pathetic standard, but here we are.

I’m starting to think Lindsay’s problems are beyond being an asshole. I think there is absolutely some Kompromat. What it is I don’t know but I think there is Something.

That goes back to that first golf game with Trump. He instantly flipped his position on Trump after that game.

There were apparently no witnesses (other than maybe Secret Service). Whatever Trump laid on him seems to have happened at that game.

@McFaul
Important context. And Firtash, the Ukrainian billionaire wanted by the FBI, is now being represented by Fox tv lawyers.

I posted about this earlier. It could be an under-the-radar big deal. First of all, Trumpworld tying itself to an indicted oligarch can’t be good for them. But also, although this case seems to have started in 2013, having Firtash in US hands now opens the possibility of inducing him to dish on Manafort, and maybe Trump.

Military is irrelevant. Ignore the word completely.

The weapons causing trouble are semiautomatics with removable magazines. Make them all class III, even old semiautomatic hunting rifles with only 5 round magazines because someone could make 30 rounders for them and 30 rounds of 30-06 from a Remington 740 would be just as bad as 30 rounds from an AK.

Not entirely so anyway.

The second the House delivers any charges to the Senate, the clerk of the Senate delivers them to the Supreme Court. The Chief Justice comes over to the Senate, where he is sworn in as the President of the Senate for the duration of the trial.

At that point, McConnell (acting President of the Senate as Majority Leader) becomes just another senator.

I live in NW Pa. I know exactly what you are talking about. People are going to believe what they want. But if you want to get some kind of gun control legislation passed telling people that you are going to take their assault rifles is not the way to do it. I think there are a lot of Republicans that are very dissatisfied with Trump and would consider voting for a democrat if they were a little more moderate than some of the Dems running. Taking guns from people who already own them is the ultimate government overreach and is a losing proposition. Just my opinion.

No. They won’t.

These people voted for Donald Trump. Donald fucking Trump. They may be dissatisfied. They may even have voted for a Democrat at some point in their lives. But they will vote exactly the way they are told, because they are so brainwashed that they thought Donald fucking Trump should be king of the USA. They do not share our reality, and so the actual policies make absolutely no difference. They will vote based on their feelings, their Facebook feeds, and whatever flatulent emissions they conjured up that morning.

Of the non-Trumpers, Jennifer Rubin has won me over. Her work gets more and more pointed. Today:

Democratic presidential candidates all should be decrying Trump’s Ukraine gambit, and yet Beto O’Rourke is the only one to say flat-out that Trump is assaulting not just Biden but all of the candidates, as well as democracy itself. The former Texas congressman tweeted about Trump’s scurrilous ad attempting to shift attention from his impeachable conduct to Biden and his son, “Trump’s ad about Joe Biden is a disgrace. Every one of us needs to call this exactly what it is: propaganda. Doing anything less is playing right into his hands.” Where are the rest of them? If the plan is to sit back and let Biden twist in the wind, they are making a grave political and moral mistake.

As for Trump, if left in office, he will continue this behavior, continue to subvert our democracy and invite Americans to question the legitimacy of the election outcome in 2020. This is precisely what the framers had in mind when they devised the impeachment power. Trump’s commission of crimes (extortion, campaign finance violations, obstruction of justice, witness intimidation) is jaw-dropping and deserving of prosecution after he leaves office. But impeachment is designed to prevent threats to our democracy, whether actions are legal or not. We have a repeat offender, a president who habitually assaults the Constitution. How could we possibly leave him in office?

The trouble with the concept of ‘independent’ voters is that we treat them as if they are neutral observers that weigh policies from both sides and vote based on that. Essentially, that their votes can be swayed from one side to the other.

I’m just not sure that’s true. Independent voters may not affiliate with one party or another, but I don’t see any real evidence that policy or anything based in reality might swing their vote. Again, 43% of them, based on that statistic, called themselves ‘independent’ but thought Donald fucking Trump should be king of the USA. That’s not a swing voter. That’s not a rational actor. That’s not someone who will be persuaded by carefully putting in a particular policy or leaving one out. That’s someone who took a look at Hillary Clinton, decided she couldn’t be trusted based on nothing but the half-formed swill in their colon, and decided that a fat, stupid con man’s onstage masturbation was worth getting up, driving to the polling place, and endorsing it.

Maybe the voices in their head will tell them to vote Democrat next time. Maybe not. But I don’t see the point of tailoring actual policy towards winning their vote. That’s a reality-based solution to a problem that doesn’t share that reality. A better strategy might be to bombard Facebook or Twitter with some emotive nonsense, since that’s what they will base their vote on.

re: #167 Hecuba’s daughter

And re:Singapore, life is not so good if you’re brown (i.e. South Asian, not ethnic Chinese). Of course, that would be a point in its favor if you’re a MAGAt.

Interesting op-ed by a Repubican columnist in WaPo. Not sure if he is being straightforward? Ah, no. R = trying to scare off Ds.

Do Democrats realize McConnell would call the shots in a Senate impeachment trial?

Actually, I’d bet that has figured in Nancy’s thinking right along.

He wouldn’t preside. The Chief Justice would.

Agree. This guy is saying that the Senate can set the “rules of engagement” beforehand. I have no idea if that is right, but know that nothing is beyond Mitch McConnell. Who, before 2009, would have guessed that the Senate would just refuse to consider judicial nominations, let alone a supreme court nomination? McConnell has no shame.

I’m not sure either. We’ve never had a divided Congress during an impeachment trial let alone a powerful hungry terrapin holding McConnell’s position during one.

An independent voter is either a temporarily embarrassed Republican, or the kind of meathead than can vote either D or R in the 21st century.

Either way, there is no point in trying to tailor D policy proposals specifically to appeal to these voters.

Ds should focus on policies that make sense that address priorities of their base, and on GOTV of that base.

Independents can either come along for the ride or be part of the problem.

While Trump/McConnell/NRA/Russia block all action on gun control, another cop was murdered this week. Shot in back of head. And a NYPD cop was killed in an incident where an alleged perpetrator apparently got a hold of the cop’s gun before the perpetrator was himself shot and killed. It’s still not clear who killed the cop - the perp with the cop’s gun, or other cops who fired on the perp and hit the cop.

Too many guns. Not enough common sense, and the death toll is on the GOP/NRA who block any gun control that might improve public safety, reduce health care costs, and make it safer for cops (top causes of death include firearms particularly during motor vehicle stops and domestic violence calls).

I see the job loss from continuing automation (with AI being part of that) as an existential threat because of the resulting political instability as the powers that be maintain the “have a job or starve” ethos even when it becomes socially destructive.

But that’s probably not what that list-maker had in mind.

In all seriousness though, AI is a major issue going forward. AI could reshape the economy in a way that materially alters the need and purpose of “work”. I am not sure any society on the planet is ready for a transition to a world where we don’t “need” to “work.”

I’ve been thinking about AI and algorithms. And how there’s some I really enjoy that comes out of it. I recently got both my parents into Spotify. The way it generates music is awesome but at the same algorithms are used that allows hate to spread. We truly are in the Information Century. We have more access to more information than ever before and it impacts our communication too.

to me, this is simply one of the usual obstacles that we’ll have to hurdle as a society. As the people who decide “what is news”, “who gets to talk about it” and “how will we reference ‘this news’” all apparently subscribe to the GOP POV.

the Dems are the ones who are launching the articles of Impeachment, how many Dems do we see on the Sunday shows?

All of the questions being asked by the hosts of the Sunday shows, are they focusing on the apparent treason of the President and the actions of his staff in covering it up or are they pissing away hours of time trying to determine if/when/how Hunter Biden and conversely his old man could possibly be involved.

Are we getting questions about who knew that this was going on in the White House, no we’re getting framing on how these revelations impact Dems chances and which candidates are impacted how for the 2020 nomination.

I mean holy cheese balls, we have the President’s staff, hiding his conversations from any oversight and based on his own utterances, his admitted behavior to trade foreign aid for campaign assistance and THIS is what our media is giving us as information. It’s no wonder that we’re so fucked if this is the informational foundation that we’re having to operate from.

there will be no greatpoolpondconversion this week

Last weekend was a lot of shoveling and pounding. We’re also working on another concurrent project so saturday and later sunday were also filled with shoveling a lot of dirt and rocks.

After my run tuesday, i got laid up with a minor (though major at the time) back spasm. More likely related to running with maybe some of the weekend work contributing on top.

Couldnt move for 2 days. Could barely walk for two more. It eased up friday night. Rested saturday and took sunday off to be cautious.
gonna try a short run in the morning.

This was our first sunday off since we started early in May. Deal with it.

It certainly isn’t on the level of climate change, but on an employment level (and what to do with a ton of people who can’t find employment in the new world), it’s pretty big.

But we have very little data about the sociological and economic ramifications of political solutions to the rapidly developing employment crisis.

If we were willing to learn the proper lessons from the changes caused by the Industrial Revolution, we could. And I think a big portion of that is that the way reward people for what they do will have to change. Now, if that’s what people mean by AI, then, other than we need to name it something else, sure. We don’t know, though, if sentient machines will come (I think they will), and if they do, what they will do.

My statement was more about automatically applying existential threat to something we’re unsure of.

Part of the impeachment strategy should be to focus a lot on the aiding and abetting of Russia’s crimes against America, if only to hold Moscow Mitch’s feet to the fire.
