That’s what makes it graft instead of bribery, the manipulation of public funds for a corrupt purpose.

My Dearest Donald,

I regret that I can only send you this impression of my toes, as my fingers have been scalded by the righteous anger that you wield in the face of this ongoing Democratic Perfidy. I am having to dictate this to that earnest young Cotton boy, as he is also an ardent admirer of yours, I know that he will convey upon you my most heartfelt meanings.

At home, I’m afraid that the squirrels have accessed the attic again and have made a nuisance of themselves among your hairpieces, I’m afraid that the one that was crafted from the finest chestnut steed may be forever lost. Please send news when you can as I understand that Washington is a wicked place and that you can return to my arms once again in our beloved Mar-a-Lago my benevolent Cuadillo.

Earnestly yours, your adoring Lindsey….

The biggest obstacle to putting together a coherent defense? They don’t feel he did anything wrong and they can’t articulate that in a way that doesn’t sound like they’re crooked bastards. In their minds, shaking down foreign leaders for “favors” is not only a totally valid form of diplomacy, their base often wonders aloud why we’re not using it to extract way more things from the rest of the world. When you spend all your time in an echo chamber, it can lead to serious confusion when you venture outside and find out nobody thinks the way you do.

They’re doing it for one simple reason: This is the one means of getting rid of him where they’d have their prints on the murder weapon. If he loses next November, they throw up their hands and whine about “election security” and “voter fraud.” If he resigns from office, he becomes a martyr to the cause, a poor victim hounded out of office before his time. And he drops dead, well then they can sit around for coming years and opine about the “greatness” he’d have brought America if he wasn’t taken before his time.

But if they vote to remove him? The walking, talking embodiment of all this is dark and rotten about their party? Their base will see it as the greatest betrayal ever visited upon them and never forgive any Republican who voted for it.

If you want to understand the Repub mindset, just go to a wingnut and ask them “What did Nixon do wrong?”

While you might get one or two honest ones who admit his crimes, by and large the majority will say some variation of three simple words: “He got caught.” Even if they’ll admit he was a crooked SOB, they will still believe he was the victim because decades of repetition by his contemporaries and their successors has burned that victim complex into their brains. To the GOP, Nixon was not doing anything that the other side wasn’t already doing, “he just got caught.”

In addition to Giuliani, Washington, D.C., lawyers Joe DiGenova and his wife, Victoria Toensing, worked alongside the former New York City mayor. According to a top U.S. official, the three attorneys were working “off the books” — not within the Trump administration — and only the president knows the details of their work.

I logged off for the whole day today because I was sick at what I saw downstairs. Oh, so we have to pander to ammosexuals and the NRA and disavow Beto’s idea of mandatory buybacks of weapons of war or else we will handily reelect Fuckface Von Clownstick?

FUCK THAT NOISE!

Goddamnit! Beto is standing up for what he believes in. TAKE A FUCKING STAND, DO WHAT’S RIGHT!

But no, we have to shut Beto up and pander to the lunatic gun culture otherwise… what? What, exactly? Are they going to come and kill all of us? Is Shitbrains McOrangetaint going to get 65% of the vote?

That shit made me sick and angry. I live in the Colorado mountains. I own guns. I have friends with assault weapons, of which I have fired. I’m no fucking dove when it comes to guns. But if you come around HERE and talk about “confiscations” and “we need to not piss off the ammosexuals,” well, FUCK OFF! Take a fucking stand! Fucking cowards!

I’m sick of this shit. Born and raised in Colorado. Columbine. Aurora Theater. New Life Church. Chuckie Cheese. Fucking something needs to be done, and pandering to ammosexuals because of some fucking fantasy of blanket weapon confiscation is stupid and cowardly.

A good description of a fictionalization of a story. Film makers do this all the time to make a better story. It’s entertainment. If it’s good entertainment, it’s successful.

That’s all it is. Entertainment. Bread and circuses for the masses. If the people walk out and say “I liked that!”, then the maker did something that worked. That is the fundamental basis of successful art. No different than a good concert.

Yeah, I’ve read about Sheeran being a notorious bullshitter, and while he may have been involved in the Hoffa matter, it’s most likely in some tangential or purely incidental way.

That being said, I’ll still see it when it comes out. Probably the last time we’ll ever see De Niro, Pacino, Pesci and Keitel working together in a Scorsese mobster film.

“Based” just means that it’s not an original idea, but upon something that the scriptwriters and director heard about.

“True” means that the people referenced (for the most part) existed, some of the shooting locations were involved, and there might best some basis in historical fact.

It’s “Story” that’s doing all the work in that phrase, because most often the people involved in the production are going off (at best) second-hand accounts of what happened and usually even less than that.

I’m sure The Irishman is excellent. Big fan of Scorsese over here! I’m going to watch it.

If it says “Based On A True Story” or “Adapted From A True Story” during the title sequence, I’mma call that a taint on the production. And you know what? It’s Marty Scorsese’s most expensive film he’s ever made, $160 million.

I think it’s probably only gonna be a matter of time (and not much time at that) before the FNC honchos decide to throw Trump under the bus.

I wonder how the FNC Trumpites are going to react? Thinking about Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, Hannity of course, Lou Dobbs and whoever else is still in the tank for him.

Will they quit? Will they comply? Things might start getting interesting in the big meeting room.

42
ckkatz  Sep 29, 2019 • 10:13:18pm

We do hear a lot of tough talk from Trump. And yet he has cut and run every time things became inconvenient.

I suspect that the folks in the Republican leadership have done the calculation on how long Trump will be with them should they go to the barricades. Dying on a hill can be awfully lonely when the fearless leader ain’t very fearless.

On the other hand, we may see close up who honors their oath to the Constitution. We already seem to have found a few who do not.

From “A Man for All Seasons”

Roper: So now you’d give the Devil benefit of law?

More: Yes. What would you do? Cut a great road through the law to get after the Devil?

Roper: I’d cut down every law in England to do that!

More: Oh? And, when the last law was down, and the Devil turned round on you - where would you hide, Roper, the laws all being flat? This country’s planted thick with laws from coast to coast - man’s laws, not God’s - and, if you cut them down - and you’re just the man to do it - d’you really think you could stand upright in the winds that would blow then? Yes, I’d give the Devil benefit of law, for my own safety’s sake.

teleskiguy  Sep 29, 2019 • 10:14:38pm

Goodfellas was “Based On A True Story” as the screenplay was adapted from a piece of journalism, Nicholas Pileggi’s “Wiseguy.” Casino was “Adapted From A True Story.” Those are different, no?

I’m thinking maybe, for fun, I should read “I Heard You Paint Houses” before I watch The Irishman.

I’ve been off-line all day. It appears that Drumpf retweeted a bunch of bullshit early this morning, went to play a round of golf where he took 37 mulligans, kicked his ball out of the rough 19 times, picked up his ball eight times out of sand traps and tossed them on the green right next to the hole, and shot a one under round of 71.

Brilliant!

Then he returned to the WH, where he realized that his surrogates, especially Oberst Gym Jordan and Reichsfuhrer Miller, got eviscerated on national TV and left the studios holding their intestines in their hands and spitting on them to keep them moist.

At which point the POTUS went on a tirade against unknown enemies and one known enemy (Schiff, a Jew!) and demanded that these known and unknown enemies should be investigated as SPIES! And TRAITORS!

Have I got this right? As I’ve mentioned, I’ve been off-line all day.

Oh, and Stonekettle has got a brilliant and very scary essay up today. You should read it.

Peter O’Toole is dead. Albert Finney is dead. He could have gone with Gabriel Byrne, but let’s face it, Scorcessi has his stable of actors and what they do is *act*.

If they do the job, and people believe it, that’s enough.

Apparently, the film is getting raves. Which means they did their jobs.

I have a perfectly serviceable rifle. It’s my Russian deer gun. I had an H&K machine gun gun when I was in the Air Force, which I sold five years ago to a collector. I made sure he could pass a background check. He was cool with that. The Russian meat rifle was found in a junk store in Hot Springs, Arkansas, now out of business, which stocked dozens of rifles, Mausers, Moisants, and Garands.

I found a Moisant, a 1939 model, which somehow made it through the war as a ceremonial gun. The barrel wasn’t shot to shit. It cost me $125. I brought it back to Austin, and had it gapped and scoped. The barrel was pristine. I put a Picatinny rail on it,
and mounted a scope and a laser sight on it.

That cost three times what I paid for the rifle, but I had a really good meat gun. The Moisant is basically a Russian 30.06 with a 5-shot stripper clip inserted from the top.

I’ve got twenty 5-shot clips.

This is a six-hundred meter gun with an eight-inch circle.

There are many hunters like me with similar weapons. I hope to dog that I don’t have to use it on people. But I do know how to use it. I’m really good at it.

Always love Finney’s scene where he rubs out the would-be assassins while making sure to keep his stogie safe. Miller’s Crossing got overlooked because of Goodfellas (both released in 1990). The Coen brothers originally wanted Trey Wilson (Raising Arizona, Bull Durham) to play Leo, but he had suddenly died in 1989. Other fun fact: Finney is dressed as one of the ladies in the powder room that Tom chases out early in the movie.

All the conservative nutbars on that thread are still going on about how “liberals are afraid of guns” and whatnot.

Mostly they’re a whole bunch of members of the 101st Keyboard Commando Division.

However, the idea “liberals are afraid of guns” still seems to be an article of conservative religion.

Throughout American history there have been violent acts perpetrated in the name of conservatism and it has always been put down. They just don’t seem to get it.

Moreover, if there was some sort of shooting civil war (rather than the intellectual civil war the country has always fought against those who would stop progress), it would be the same as the last one. Most of the population lives in liberal areas, controls most of the finance and manufacturing, &c. Additionally, liberals in conservative areas would be the same as last time (either formations loyal to the government, or partisans behind the lines).

Abortion clinic bombings and murders. The Atlanta Olympics bombing. The Oklahoma City bombing. The National Alliance. The Phineas Priesthood. The Order.

Left-wing violence has been comparatively rare. Violence is built in to conservative ideology and religion: They will thrown democracy under the bus any time they don’t get their way.

No doubt. I’m not saying the violence is unprecedented nor is right wing violence but this is scary because Trump both encourages it and has no problem with it done in his name. It’s scary because it’s enabled from the very top.

The pogroms in Revolutionary Russia were much worse when it was done in the Czar’s name and when he was seen as being okay with the violence. It’s no coincidence that the greatest numbers of Russian Jews left during the rule of Nicholas II and his father Alexander III.

Ronald Reagan encouraged it as well, though he used dogwhistles that did not penetrate well with those on the left.

Aside from his heinous campaign announcement in Philadelphia, Mississippi, he declared himself a “Sagebrush Rebel.”

The Sagebrush Rebellion started in 1976 when the Federal Land Use Act became law, ending the Homestead Act and establishing management by the Bureau of Land Management [BLM].

Orrin Hatch joined in their cause as a newly elected senator in 1977, seeing Sagebrush Rebels as a way to conserve and advance his power. He would frequently pander to them, but rarely voted for anything which actually advanced their cause (carrot and stick).

Libertarians, sovereign citizens, and conservative ranchers out here in the Old West declared they were “Sagebrush Rebels” and took up a low level war against the Feds, particularly BLM.

When Reagan declared himself a Sagebrush Rebel, that was an instant flag to those who had already taken up arms against the Federal government’s land use policies.

Sagebrush Rebels thought that federal lands should be turned over to states, local governments, or even sold as private lands. That thought lives on today in the Libertarian Party, small (l) libertarians, and wingnuts like the Oath Keepers and the Y’all Qaeda groups which went all in for Cliven Bundy and took over Mahleur Wildlife Refuge in Oregon.

Additionally, Ronald Reagan appointed James Watt as his Interior Secretary, who also pandered to the Sagebrush Rebels (and the oil companies who were the money behind the push to privatise public lands). While James Watt never actually privatised any land, he dramatically slowed the acquisition of Federal land under the Antiquities Act and other vehicles.

I agree. Times have changed since Cliven Bundy first took up his war against the government in 1993.

All these so-called militia groups that exist now are based on previous militia groups like the Montana Freedmen, the Tenther Movement, and the Posse Comitatus.

What’s different today is they have the Internet and the World Wide Web to spread their anti-government propaganda, along with libertarian tech bros running the principle companies used for that (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, &c).

Such propaganda isn’t allowed on broadcast television or radio, but the FCC’s remit does not extend to the Internet.

Until such time as we can crowbar the conservatives out of the FCC, the tools we have available as liberals facing down libertarian fascism are primarily boycotts of the companies which enable these groups.

Their ideologies aren’t new, and the groups today are actually less violent than they were in the Seventies and Eighties. That said, the law needs to change with the technology. These guys aren’t spreading their propaganda with Mimeograph machines in a basement anymore: One YouTube video can reach potentially billions of people for virtually no cost.

93
Anymouse 🌹🎃  Sep 30, 2019 • 4:54:43am

In particular, the Tenther Movement (that refers to the X Amendment) argues that states are sovereign and unless the Constitution shows a specific enumerated power, a power is reserved to the states.

Thus the Tenther Movement opposes Social Security, New Deal and Great Society laws, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Voting Rights Act of 1965, uniform federal bankruptcy law, &c. (In other words, they’re racists.)

Reason Magazine argues the term should not be applied to libertarians, because they oppose these laws strictly on “ideological grounds” rather than misinterpretations by Tenthers of case law of the country (which essentially states the X Amendment is a tautology).

Anymouse 🌹🎃  Sep 30, 2019 • 4:56:50am

re: #93 Anymouse 🌹🎃

The most prominent Tenther in the US Government today is Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA), who specifically ran on a Tenther platform to win her seat in the Senate (despite being part of the National Guard, which is not authorised in the Constitution, but hypocrisy never stopped a conservative).

That doesn’t read well for Hong Kong.

I hope the protestors who are exercising their rights under Hong Kong’s Basic Law keep violent protestors and anarchists under control, because Beijing and the PLA don’t need much of an excuse to steamroll over the city.

The only thing it seems to me that has prevented that up to now is the relative openness of Hong Kong: Anything the PRC does there is instant news throughout the world.

Since China is trying to exercise soft power in the form of aid to foreign countries and investment, a brutal crackdown would probably backfire on their foreign affairs efforts.

Another page out of Trump’s book, Boris promised “Infrastructure”:

The Conservative Party’s ‘infrastructure revolution’ is nothing but a distraction from its toxic politics

[…]

Today is “spend, spend, spend” day, with the chancellor Sajid Javid centre stage. He is promising “an infrastructure revolution” on roads and broadband, on top of more money for the NHS, schools and the police. In a round of interviews, Javid said he would not break his fiscal rules, but would change them. It’s called moving the goalposts. He dismissed doubts about turning on the spending taps while the prospect of a no-deal exit still hangs over the economy. He hinted at tax cuts, spending rises and interest rate reductions (the Bank of England’s job, not his) in the event of no deal. There is little expectation here that Johnson will get a deal.

This seems like a big deal.

Boris Johnson will be dismissed by Queen if he tried to ignore court order to implement Benn Act, says Grieve

Dominic Grieve, one of the 21 Tories who had the whip removed after rebelling over Brexit last week and one of the MPs involved in drafting the Benn Act to rule out a no-deal Brexit on 31 October, has said that he thinks the legislation is robust, and that ministers will not find loopholes in it.

In an interview with Sky News, Grieve said that, if Boris Johnson tried to ignore the law, the courts could force him to comply.

[Johnson] would be taken to court and a writ of mandamus would be issued against him and he would be told, as a matter of law, that he has to write the letter [to the EU requesting a Brexit delay]. The case could go to the supreme court and I suspect the courts could do with it very quickly.

Grieve also said that, if Johnson tried to ignore the courts, ultimately he could be dismissed as PM by the Queen.

Well, the Libertarian Party (the most respectable of such groups) notes it has a real problem recruiting women into its party. My wife was a campaign treasurer for a Colorado US House candidate, but since she’s been married to me, she’s gradually given up libertarian ideas and abandoned the Libertarian Party for the Democratic Party. Maybe, but the big problem with that is that those core “followers”, I.e. the red-hat cultists- are a definite (if quite large and cohesive) minority. And pretty much of a personality cult as well. And gaming/abusing the system to maintain power from a minority position has been the Republicans’ SOP for decades. If public opinion shifts just enough that a critical mass of GOPers - and I’m thinking that may be just a dozen or so Senators - see electoral disaster looming on a national or any-but-the-reddest-of-red states level, they’re likely to turn on King Orangeanus in a heartbeat. They will just have give themselves enough time to craft a reasonably-deniable exit strategy.

Even with that they’d still have to deal with the obstruction, the corruption of the record keeping, the campaign finance violations, the public trust, the oath of office

Oh and everything we knew before last week

I wonder how the FNC Trumpites are going to react? Thinking about Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, Hannity of course, Lou Dobbs and whoever else is still in the tank for him.

Will they quit? Will they comply? Things might start getting interesting in the big meeting room.

Heavily armed, fearless, experienced in small-unit maneuvers and familiar with traffic patterns. The out-of-state Red Hat invaders will find themselves stuck on the 405 and the 110, unable to move, while the defenders surround them. even believing the President’s actions and behavior warrant impeachment, they can still easily believe that his actions and behavior merit reelection

there’s even a mechanism for that (but they probably dont know it). senate does in fact vote to impeach/convict, but does not vote that he can never again hold federal office. It’s Amarillo. The chance of a Demoncrat getting elected in Texas District-13 is somewhere between none and winning a Powerball jackpot.

Serendipity. I was clearing some brush and saw this Mariposa Lily had been cut. Took the seeds home and placed them in the window. The seeds popped out after a few days. For some reason, I saw lifeboats from a stricken ship. Returned the seeds back to the area from where they came. Perhaps one will germinate and send a bloom up into the world - thus completing the cycle.

The crazier it gets - the more important it is to dive into the mysteries of Nature. I took this on my kitchen table with a macro lens and natural light.

Ways And Means Mulling Release Of Trump Tax Whistleblower Complaint

Ways and Means Committee Chair Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) said on Friday that he has consulted House attorneys about releasing the complaint, which his committee received in July. Bloomberg first reported the remarks on Friday.

The complaint purportedly comes from a federal employee and focuses on allegations of impropriety in the Internal Revenue Service’s mandatory audit of Trump’s tax returns.

One of the detestable but somewhat amusing things about this website: If you tweet one thing about X, dozens of people people say “WELL WHAT ABOUT Y?” or “WHY DIDN’T YOU TWEET ABOUT Y?” or “YOU DON’T CARE ABOUT Y!” Even if you have tweeted about Y 500 times before.

Another Republican Asshole Bites The Dust!

Bye Chris Collins! Jail’s waiting for you!

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) received a letter of resignation from Collins on Monday, a senior Democratic aide said. The resignation will be effective when the letter is officially filed at a scheduled House session Tuesday.

The New York congressman is expected to plead guilty to insider-trading charges on Tuesday, following allegations last year that the Republican schemed with his son to avoid significant losses on a biotechnology investment.

1. The Whistleblower’s complaint is no big deal, underwhelming, unimpressive.
2. OK, maybe the Whistleblower’s complaint is troubling, but it’s false.
3. OK, not saying the Whistleblower’s complaint is false, but it was done on the wrong form that was illegally changed by former Sec of State Hillary Clinton who should be arrested for treason because of emails.
