At least in Japanese one can speak of a person as just a person.

But in English, we have to conjoin words, such as “that person” or “this person”.

On the other hand “you” used to be plural, hence “Bob, are you going with us?” Instead of “Bob, is you going with us?” You’d never say “Bob are going with us.” It’s the “you” that make singular plural, as it were.

And yeah, I have an inner grammar Nazi too.

The similarities between RWNJ militias and Al Qaeda are a frequent subject of comment and mockery. If/when they do start their pogrom, there will be another: Their most damaging acts will result from suicide attacks. They won’t wear bomb belts or make pre-martyrdom videos but only a hard core of suicidal nut-cakes will be willing to take real action. A cell that storms a federal office building or military base will be eradicated whether they actually plan to be or not. The only question is how much damage they can do in the meantime.

I have to write reports where, sometimes, the issue is due to the actions of a specific person. I am not permitted to identify the person directly. Instead we identify by group and use they/them pronouns. I’ve done this for over a decade so I’m used to it-in reports. When talking to someone directly who uses they/them pronouns, I stumble and babble.

I know what you mean, and it can be uncomfortable, but the way you are stating it isn’t actually true.

Example:
A : “My friend is joining us for dinner.”
B: “Oh? How are they getting here?”

It’s not your grammar nazi so much as hearing it deployed in a manner that is unfamiliar to you. It’s also worth noting that the word “you” used to be strictly plural and it’s usage changed to ambiguous (plural or singular) over time (replacing thou).

Apparently the whistleblower had to do it through the CIA. For nat’l security agencies it isn’t possible to legally go directly to Congress.

From NPR:

“…the Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act allows workers to report wrongdoing they see in their agencies directly to members of Congress. But there are different rules for people who work in national security.

“If you work in the intelligence community you must bring your concern to the inspector general before you can go to Congress,” he says, whereas an employee at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, for example, “can go right to [their] member of Congress or the committee that has jurisdiction over housing” and report their concerns. “Those are two major differences, as we’re seeing play out,” Colapinto says.”

I accept the need for singular ‘they.’

You even already use the singular they (see my comment above), anytime you are unaware of the gender of the individual to which you are referring. (Note the disagreement of subject-verb tense here, as well.)

You just aren’t used to using it in this specific situation. It is a change in usage, and changes to our native language tend to make us uncomfortable. This is pretty normal.

But I think it’s incorrect to fall back on the idea that it’s because we are violating some “rule”, if that makes any sense.

The one grammar thing I haven’t figured out is how to describe someone who has switched genders when the part of the story is about them transitioning. I was trying to tell my mom about one of my son’s friends, who she had met before the transition, and my mom has enough trouble anyway with using the pronoun the person wants to use now.

This actually makes perfect sense in a twisted way. Trump is the greatest projectionist of all time, so he sees all other world leaders as being just as corrupt as he is.

In some cases (Saudi Arabia and North Korea), Trump’s expectations align with reality. These are the leaders he gets along with most easily.

But any honest foreign leader trying to do a difficult job? Forget about it. Trump has no comprehension of how such a person could exist.

Nailed it.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area on this Rosh Hashanah. Shul had extra police on hand, both outside and inside the building. The ones inside are particularly disquieting, because it was all due to the terror attack last year at Tree of Life.

Right wing domestic terrorist was responsible then, and Trump’s stochastic terrorism means that we have to spend even more on safety/security during our Holy Days.

At the same time, Trump’s now threatening a goddamned civil war because he’s subject to impeachment? This fucker thinks only of himself at all times, and doesn’t care about the consequences. He’d tear the nation apart and have his know-nothing supporters engage in violence so long as Trump thinks he’s threatened. This isn’t only not normal, it’s still more impeachable conduct.

Trump does not belong in office. That was true from before the election, but every passing day finds more to disquality and remove him from office. Impeachment is one route. Another is the 25A, but don’t expect Trump’s cabinet to do anything.

They’re just as corrupt and compromised as Trump himself.

How do we know this? Because they are lying and engaging in felony conduct to defend and protect Trump. Pompeo lied about what he knew and when. He was on the Ukraine call. That makes him party to the felony misconduct.

Rudy is subpeonaed to hand over documents, emails, and other comms relating to his conduct - and he admitted on live tv that he had that information. He better be lawyered up (and hope his lawyer is better than Trump has) because that lawyer will need to remind Rudy of his 5A right against self-incrimination.

Oh, and now learn that Trump tried to pressure Australia to dig up dirt on Trump’s political enemies too. We are seeing that Trump’s entire foreign policy was not only reactionary but entirely focused on actions that benefit Trump personally, and was willing to throw our allies under the bus to maximize the pressure. This too is an impeachable offense.

That’s one of the reasons that polls are showing support for impeachment of Trump growing significantly. The events of the past week are finally turning the nation against Trump in a way that prior conduct failed to do.

The thing of it is, that Mueller’s report showed rampant obstruction and misconduct. The Ukraine mess relates directly back to Mueller and seeking foreign powers to assist Trump personally in going after his political enemies/rivals.

Trump hasn’t changed. He’s been doing this all along.

Everyone in Trumpworld is compromised and complicit. This is just more of the same.

To paraphrase Graham - if Trump wins, the GOP is fucked.

Yes, yes they are. And the GOP deserves to be destroyed. That the GOP continues defending Trump shows that they put party over nation as always, and even if some start to defect, it’ll be to protect the party and their power (and their own seats in Congress).

At this point the 2018 blue wave might be a ripple compared to what happens in 2020 (I hope). The GOP needs to be swept from office at all levels, and retaking the Senate needs to be paramount to make sure that we start the process of restoring good government.

Cuomo will call a special, and I’ll bet that because it has the potential to be a flip (this was a razor-thin win for Collins in 2018 that went to a recount before he finally pulled it out), he’ll call the special quickly. That’s a difference from NY-25 to the east (my district), in which he waited forever to call the special after Louise Slaughter (D) died, and so we had the special on the same day as the general election to fill the seat last year.

So I googled the subject, and other than the requirement by NYS that a Congressional vacancy be filled “by special election” - except in some non-relevant circumstances - it seems like Collins’ seat is going to be vacant for some months (I gather that a nominating primary and a special election will need to be scheduled). Tough for his district, but there we are….

Funny, googling “congressional vacancy new york” pulled up a number of job opportunities (presumably related to the “vacancy term(?)) including a staffer position with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Too bad I don’t live in The Bronx….

On the other hand “you” used to be plural, hence “Bob, are you going with us?” Instead of “Bob, is you going with us?” You’d never say “Bob are going with us.” It’s the “you” that make singular plural, as it were.

And yeah, I have an inner grammar Nazi too.

the reason we say “you are” is because we lost “thou art” as the second person singular informal back in the 1700’s. So now we use “you are” to signify both singular and plural “you” status, and we no longer have an informal and formal form of the second person.

People have always used they/them for singular indeterminate or unclassifiable. So the new thing here isn’t the singular they, it’s a growing awareness that some individuals actually prefer, in person, to remain gender indeterminate and that it’s just polite for us to treat them the way we’d want to be treated in their shoes.

People have got to know their goddamned limitations and one of mine is that I wasn’t brought upon this Earth to understand other people’s fucking personal preferences.

I’m finding it difficult to get used to using “them” and “their” instead of gendered pronouns when a person isn’t identified.

My inner grammar nazi gets upset about misusing a plural word every time I try.

Fear not, “they” as a singular pronoun has always been correct. It is only the outsized influence of a couple of grammarians in the XVIII claiming “they” cannot be singular because a plural pronoun can’t take a singular antecedent.

They forgot about “you.” By the XVIII Century, “thou” was long gone from English usage.

“They” as a singular pronoun is documented all the way back to 1375.

From the original grammar Nazis, the Oxford English Dictionary:

A brief history of singular ‘they’
