And Now, Your Monday Trump Impeachment Dump

Politics • Views: 27,462

The dam has well and truly burst today, with a damning deluge of reports on Trump’s attempts to leverage American power to help himself steal another election, and cover up Russia’s involvement in the last one. And not just Trump; it’s now become clear that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General William Barr are neck-deep in the criminal conspiracy as well.

First, we should note that as part of his normal weekend routine, Trump not only called for the arrest of Rep. Adam Schiff for “treason,” he threatened civil war if the impeachment continues.

Then today, the real stories started to come out.

Rudy Giuliani was subpoenaed to provide documents to House Democrats.

We learned that Mike Pompeo was on Trump’s now-infamous extortion call to the Ukrainian president.

Then, in a one-two punch, we first learned that William Barr had pressured the prime minister of Australia to help him discredit the Mueller investigation…

… and then that story blew even wider open, as we learned that Barr has been approaching numerous foreign entities to help him discredit US intelligence services and hide Russia’s interference in the 2016 election.

This news day qualifies as head-spinning. Trump’s whole house of cards is collapsing around him.

Oh, and by the way, he’s still going on television and confessing to crimes.

UPDATE at 9/30/19 3:40:40 pm by Charles Johnson

And here’s video of Mike Pompeo lying about the Ukrainian phone call.

At one point today during a presser in the Oval Office, Trump left the office, when the usual way of doing things is for the journalists to file out.

Everything Trump touches dies. US foreign policy since Trump came into office was to further Trump’s political power and personal fortunes. We have still more evidence of this with all the efforts to try and go after Trump rivals like Biden, but also to discredit the investigations into Trump-Russia connections.

For a guy who claims he has no connections, he’s doing an awful lot of criming to cover up those connections and pressuring countries into working with Trump to get dirt on political opponents or to discredit the US intel services and their conclusions about Trump and his repeated entreaties to get assistance from Russia and other foreign powers to win the 2016 election (and now 2020).

So anyway, Trump is subverting our foreign intel alliances and Barr is helping, and is therefore working against US intel conclusions that he represents.

Remember that Trump has been trying to strong arm Turkey re: Turkey’s purchase of Russian weapons systems, and that whole thing went silent a while back. No doubt we’ll learn that all that plays into the ongoing Barr effort to try and discredit the US intel community take on Trump-Russia (and in the process confirms everything the IC says about how Trump is compromised, complicit, and criminalized the US foreign policy to serve him personally).

Trump is goddamn lucky that the members of the intelligence community are as professional and apolitical as they are.

If I was in charge I would have burned him down to the waterline a long time ago.

That said, maybe they’ll swing back soon and deliver the (metaphorical) death blow.

re: #16 Charles Johnson

I’m finding it difficult to get used to using “them” and “their” instead of gendered pronouns when a person isn’t identified.

My inner grammar nazi gets upset about misusing a plural word every time I try.

re: #192 Anymouse 🌹🎃

Fear not, “they” as a singular pronoun has always been correct. It is only the outsized influence of a couple of grammarians in the XVIII Century claiming “they” cannot be singular because a plural pronoun can’t take a singular antecedent.

They forgot about “you.” By the XVIII Century, “thou” was long gone from English usage.

“They” as a singular pronoun is documented all the way back to 1375.

From the original grammar Nazis, the Oxford English Dictionary:

A brief history of singular ‘they’

Additionally, even at the time those grammarians in the XVIII Century received pushback from everyday speakers, writers, &c.

Charlie Pierce is sounding *another* alarm: Ukraine’s Civil War Is a ‘Playground’ for White Supremacists. What Could Go Wrong?

There’s a lot of stirring in various perilous places right now. The president* and his people think they can toy with them, but they’re toddlers in a powder magazine. This is also not a great time in this country for the president* to be talking about traitors and civil wars, either. Not all of those folks in the Soufan report are Serbs.

The current conservative outrage at using “they” as a singular pronoun is actually a dogwhistle. It stands the place of “we hate those icky transgender people, but you can’t say that now because of the PC Police.”

So “they” was smuggled in to spin up their non-thinking 27% base voters to be angry at the placeholder so they don’t look like the bigots they are.

You’ll note this outrage really didn’t break into the public until “scary men want to use women’s bathrooms” became a conservative talking point.

From the previous thread:
re: #55 Belafon

The one grammar thing I haven’t figured out is how to describe someone who has switched genders when the part of the story is about them transitioning. I was trying to tell my mom about one of my son’s friends, who she had met before the transition, and my mom has enough trouble anyway with using the pronoun the person wants to use now.

“They” is acceptable unless a person tells you or you ask (pesky plural pronoun “you” used as singular here) a preference.

I don’t know the specifics of this person and it’s not my business. Say this person now presents as Becky, when before it was Bill.

Ask her if it sounds okay to reference Becky as “he.”

Additionally, you can see the conservative dogwhistle outrage over Chelsea Manning. While what she did in the Army was reprehensible, she is still a she. The only people who address her as “he” or by her previous name are trying to be assholes.

My wife changed her name after her mother died, because of family reasons I’m not going to get into here. Even changing your name legally is a ton of work.

No one where we live now has ever known her by anything but her current name. Old friends from before her name change quickly switched to her new name because she asked them to. Anyone who wouldn’t do that is not a friend, they’re an asshole.

Asshole who intentionally misgenders people: Hi, my name is Bill.
Me: You don’t look like a Bill. I think you’re a Becky. I’m going to call you Becky because it makes me feel better.

Another example of changing word usage can be found right here at Little Green Footballs.

The word “downstairs” is used by everyone here to refer to comments in the previous thread. If you go back over my worthless commentary over my years here, I have never used the word “downstairs.”

If someone felt insulted by my usage of “from the previous thread” rather than “downstairs” (because my brain locks up thinking of a blog thread identifying as a staircase), particularly if that person is Mr. Johnson, I’ll change my usage. I may do so anyway eventually, simply because “downstairs” has fewer letters for my not-so-well working fingers to type.

The same goes for “Lizard,” a member of the community here. I really have trouble thinking of people as reptiles (I’m not David Icke).

As for two spaces after a full stop versus one, I have no trouble switching between the two, since I use a typewriter all the time (my Royal typewriter is right next to my computer).

This theory is belied by the report yesterday citing “someone familiar with Barr’s thinking” that Barr was surprised and angry that Trump had told Zelensky to contact him about Biden and the 2016 election. What Barr is doing now is explicitly intertwined with that same effort. Also, if he is just humoring Trump and stringing him along (he isn’t) that’s almost as bad from the perspective of government fraud and waste.

Ah another Trumpette did something naughty!

Stacey Dash was arrested for domestic battery after an incident Sunday night in New Port Richey, FL, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

The “Clueless” actress was taken into custody after an argument with a male, whose name was redacted in an incident report obtained by CNN. She is accused of pushing and slapping him.

The report states that police were called to a home Sunday evening “to respond to a domestic dispute” between the two.

“The victim sustained red scratch marks to his upper left arm from being pushed,” the report states.

Dash was taken into custody and transported to the Land O’ Lakes detention facility without incident. She posted bail and was released on Monday morning, according to a spokesperson for the Pasco County Sheriff.

They’re all banking on pardons. All we can hope for is a Congressional Truth & Reconciliation Commission that is willing to use civil & inherent contempt to to compel testimony, on the basis that an acceptance of a pardon removes all legal jeopardy and obviates the ability to plead the Fifth.

(Pulpit pimp) Lance Wallnau: Impeaching Trump Would ‘Overturn the Will of 600 Million Americans’

Trump-loving right-wing activist Lance Wallnau streamed a video on his Facebook page last Friday in which he declared that Rep. Adam Schiff “is a flippin’ nutjob” and fumed that in seeking to impeach President Trump, the Democrats are trying to “overturn the will of 600 million Americans,” which is quite a feat considering that the current population of the United States is roughly 330 million.

Wallnau was furious about Schiff’s performance during last week’s House Intelligence Committee hearing in which Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire was grilled about the whistleblower complaint regarding Trump’s effort to press the government of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

“Have you guys heard what this reprehensible character—I mean, the guy looks like he needs deliverance,” Wallnau said. “We can be compassionate and say, ‘Nero’s flippin’ crazy’ while he’s killing Christians. This guy is a flippin’ nutjob.”

With Trump, loyalty is a one way street, so I hope after he loses the election he will view them as a bunch of losers and refuse to grant them pardons.

OK, I had a sudden thought.
Maybe Barr isn’t actually trying to pressure/strong arm allies into discrediting the Mueller and subsequent investigations.
Maybe he’s just using the request for introductions to convince Dotard he’s actually on the case. Much like Trump’s “investigators” who got free vacations to Hawaii looking for “birth records”

Just a thought

[Embedded content]

I think *something* is going on with Barr. The normal way authoritarian regimes operate is to have their *own* law enforcement go after political opponents, and Barr is the head of that in the US (at the Federal level, anyway). So why root around in places like Ukraine?

In fact, if you think that Biden’s getting a Ukraine prosecutor fired was prima facie abuse of power, the fact that the FBI is not investigating is fairly embarrassing.

One possibility is that Barr got pushback when he tried to get the FBI to help out. If so, it will be interesting to see what subordinates have to say in hearings.

It has been barely a month since a road maniac shot 30 people in Odessa, killing 7. This is a new one. He was going around shooting at people whose cars had broken down beside the road. Juan Rosales, 36, was killed. Another man, 52 year old Jesus Alvarado, was injured. Two other people escaped injury though their cars were damaged.
Alleged Odessa serial shooter writes of renouncing evil to Jesus on Facebook hours before a man was killed

ECTOR COUNTY, Texas (KOSA) - The man linked to last week’s serial shootings in Odessa has been identified as Troy Lee Wilson, according to documents obtained by CBS7.

*****
Wilson’s Facebook page is filled with posts about Jesus, prayer and renouncing evil.
Even on the day investigators say Wilson shot and killed 36-year-old Juan Rosalez, he posted, “Good morning to all hope you have a super blessed day and pray for all you can …… and go into prayer and renounce anything you can to Jesus Christ of evil in your life and or go into prayer ask him to speak in holly (sic) spirit in voice and tell what to renounce …… just say what it is in prayer and renounce in Jesus name amen ……..”

Everything that’s come out to date should end Trumpworld. The GOP supports. What will it take for them to stop supporting Trump and end Trumpworld?

It’ll be when the polling craters for the GOP. When their internal polling craters, it’ll finally end Trumpworld.

That’s what it’ll take. Not an endlass parade of lifeless packaging of Trump scandals. Not more whistleblowers.

Polling. That’s the only thing getting the GOP to act. It wont even be party over nation - it’ll be to protect their remaining power before Trump absolutely eviscerates their 2020 chances and beyond.
