Sept. 27, 2019 | Bob Boilen — Josh Ritter came to the Tiny Desk with the enthusiasm of a young child and the wisdom of an old soul. He arrived armed with a message and musical soulmates, Amanda Shires on fiddle and Jason Isbell on acoustic guitar. Both play on Josh’s 2019 album Fever Breaks; in fact, Jason produced the record. This is Josh Ritter’s second appearance at the Tiny Desk; his first was on Valentine’s Day 2011. On this day, his heart was on America.

Each song was filled with frustrations regarding the treatment of refugees, immigration, politics and our hearts. On “All Some Kind of Dream,” he sings, “There was a time when we were them / Just as now they all are we / Was there an hour when we took them in? / Or was it all some kind of dream?” When the song ended, Josh stared into the NPR crowd. “I feel like the big thing that we all have to fight against is this notion that we’re not all human beings,” he said. “And they’re trying to break us in every number of ways, all different little groups, and that we have no power, but we have power!”

Then he, Amanda and Jason launched into another Josh Ritter piece of passion, “The Torch Committee,” a song I believe is about evil and complacency. The trio ended with a new song, one I’d not heard before called “The Gospel of Mary.” It imagines Joseph, Mary and their child as refugees. Honestly, it was a draining concert with challenges to who we are and who, as a country and a people, we wish to be. As the applause faded Josh hugged his bandmates, thanked the crowd, smiled and said, “America, we love you, but you’ve gotta change!” Music can do that, and Josh Ritter is an agent for that change.

We’ve reached the point where North Korea is telling us the truth more than Pompeo’s State Department.

State Dep. career diplomats stuck trying to turn sow’s ear into designer Trump purse, trying to convince impossible-to-please boss that the NorK “negotiators” didn’t engage in yet another round of aimless “talks” so they could continue to shit on said boss’ lawn and get complimented on the fragrance.

And we get a reminder of just how fucked we are that an air-tight case now basically exists to remove the president* from office, but there is widespread doubt that it can happen because one half of our political system believe that the only crime that occurred…was that anybody outside the conspirators ever found out about it all in the first place.

That’s a nice campus. My middle son went there one summer for a pipe organ camp (he plays all manner of keyboards, organ, piano, pipe organ). At the end of the 2 weeks when us parents picked the kids up we walked from church to church (there were like 8 of them with big pipe organs), and the kids all did their thing on the particular organ they had been practicing on during the camp. Was a real nice time.

I was thinking about this as I passed my Bernie Bro neighbor’s house walking the dog today.

Have the Bros started in with the conspiracy theories blaming Clinton and/or the DNC for Bernie’s heart attack yet?

You’ll never have Romney’s long, happy marriage, or self-made kids who lead full lives, not profiteering from their dad’s position.

You’ll never have Romney’s hair.

Uh, we are talking about the same guy who made his money by buying businesses, saddling those businesses with all the debt he incurred buying them, and then selling them off piece meal, right?

Self-made kids? If I’m wrong, I’m wrong, but I’d like to see the citation on that.

Integrity? The same guy who created Romneycare in MA and then derided the ACA while running against Obama?

Also, the same guy who would put a dog on the fucking roof of his car, rather than let it ride safely in the cabin?

I’m glad he’s speaking out against Trump, sorta, and what not, but Christ; let’s not build the fucking statue yet.

It honestly seems like nothing more than an extension of the existing “This was a perfect phone call!” defense strategy that has so far not found many buyers, i.e. portraying the act of making the call the “crime” rather than the contents of the call. That way they can keep arguing that what they did was perfectly legal, like a getaway driver insisting that he was just transporting his friends from the bank to their house.

IIRC, in 1955, age 65 - about a year or so before his second (re-) election.
And at the time, I think his health issues were a big deal (Ike was the oldest sitting President (?) ) . Not that it hurt his re-election chances, though.

re: #81 Mattand

But campaigning was different then. Candidates were chosen at the Conventions, and there were few primaries. So it was a short period of active campaigning then. What happened was the melee at the Democratic Convention of 1968, where many of the new delegates objected to the less than transparent nomination of Hubert Humphrey. So there were reforms made at the 1972 convention that moved the nominating process for delegates from state conventions to primaries. An open process led to primaries instead of simply going to the Convention.
Winning those created a much longer race and of course, a more grueling one.

And of course, with the rules at the time, Ike barely had to campaign. His nomination at the convention was as assured as an incumbent, so he only had to show up and take the accolades. Yes, there was concern about his health, but no concern that simply running again would kill him.

So Trump did nothing wrong, but…

- Pompeo was listening in on the call
- Only a limited number of staff were in on the call
- The call was immediately jammed into a super-secret computer server
- When a whistleblower made a complaint about the call, the whole thing was immediately silenced
- When a criminal complaint was made in conjunction to the whisteblower’s complaint, the DOJ put the kibosh on it without an investigation

And we’re supposed to believe that all this happened because Rick Perry pressed Trump to make a call.

I’d like to nominate: “Obfusgate”

From the word:

obfuscate[ ob-fuh-skeyt, ob-fuhs-keyt ]

verb (used with object), ob*fus*cat*ed, ob*fus*cat*ing.
to confuse, bewilder, or stupefy.
to make obscure or unclear:
to obfuscate a problem with extraneous information.
to darken.

Unfortunately the term is a real tongue twister and hard to speak.

It doesn’t even make sense. Why would Rick Perry request that Trump call the President of Ukraine and to demand the investigation of Hunter Biden in exchange for releasing aid? The only reason that makes sense is that Perry went to Ukraine to present the blackmail, the response was essentially “you’re joking right?” and he came back and indicated that the blackmail attempt is only going to be taken seriously if Trump delivers it.

“…The drama roiling Washington has intensified scrutiny of Giuliani’s private work as a lawyer and consultant around the globe and his unorthodox decision to continue to represent clients with foreign interests while serving as the president’s personal lawyer.

How Giuliani navigates between the needs of his foreign clients and those of the president is unclear. The former New York mayor, whose private security and consulting firm does not disclose its clients, has never registered as a foreign lobbyist, saying he does not do work that would require such filings.

He has accepted work from a number of foreign interests whose policy goals have been at odds with U.S. policy, including the Mujahideen-e Khalq, or MEK, an Iranian resistance group operating in exile that was previously listed as a terrorist group by the State Department, a designation removed in 2012.”

My understanding is that they weren’t that close before running.

Apparently Biden wasn’t aware of how much Obama respected him until in one of the debates, when a question that Biden hadn’t listened was passed to him in the form of “and what do you think Senator Biden?” and rather than let him stumble, Obama whispered what the question was about to him.

From that, and then running for office, and then during the Obama Presidency, is when their friendship developed.

The witnesses in the Amber Guyger murder trial are now being systematically targeted for retaliation and elimination.

The witness has been identified only as Bunny and has stated that she recorded Guyger on her cellphone after hearing the fatal shots and Botham asking Guyger why did you shoot me. That video was seized by prosecutors and has not been seen by the public. In addition, she was placed under a gag order by the prosecution and cannot discuss the details of the video in public. Despite the fact she was only a witness to the shooting, she has received death threats and now she says she has been fired from her job.

According to her, people began contacting the pharmaceutical company where she worked claiming that she was a radical, anti-police and a Black extremist. As a result, she claims the company did not want the publicity and fired her as well as revoking the credentials of her profession.

Wow. She should have gone to the media instead and asked to be an anonymous source. I’m trying to figure out why prosecutors would bury this evidence.

re: #82 Charles Johnson

If Rick Perry told Donald Trump to jump off a bridge, would he do it?

Can we work out a way of getting Rick to try?
