LOL, so Gowdy will take a check as long as he doesn’t have to be seen with Trump or have to talk to anyone in the media.

Well, the earlier reports said he was going to join the team formally, and the correction seems to be that he’ll be “consulting.” In other words he’s decided that while he wants to be involved, he wants to make sure his ass won’t get pulled down when this ship sinks faster than the Titanic.

Trump is having a rally there and the Mayor kindly suggested his money for the cops and arena rental up front due to the fact that the POTUS is a well known deadbeat.

It is hard to believe but the POTUS did not take the news well and is threatening a lawsuit.

I just heard on Hardball that it looks like the House is going to fast track impeachment by making obstruction of Congress one of the articles, and assuming the WH is covering up damning information. So there should be an impeachment vote this year.

I’ve about had it with Bernie supporters, BTW. I was reading Rebecca Traister’s twitter thread about the whole Warren/pregnancy/”gosh, it doesn’t SAY ‘fired for being pregnant’ so she must be LYING!!” kerfuffle, and some guy with “Bernie 2020” in his Twitter nic was yattering on about dishonesty and shit.

Seriously? And they think they’re the REAL Progressives? Do they REALLY think that in 1971, the school board would put that in the record? I mean they fired pregnant women because even a MARRIED woman being pregnant was somehow unseemly - presumably because it was a CLEAR INDICATION that she’d had sex. They sure as hell weren’t going to put it in the record.

And that’s another thing. It bothered me in 2016, and it’s bothering me now - a LOT of young people, including young women, so completely take the current situation of increased equality as a given, and have NO FUCKING CLUE what it was like for the women who went before them, what they had to put up with, how limited their choices were, and the unending shit they had to endure.

In the late 60s/early 70s, Mom found out that a male coworker, with fewer responsibilities and less experience than she had was being paid substantially MORE. She asked her boss about it, and he said, as if this justified it, “Well, he’s got a family to support.”

THAT was what it was like.

I could not agree more. If conservatives are guilty of romanticizing the past, I think there’s a lot of younger progressives who take what the older generations fought for and won for granted and that definitely happened and still is. I don’t like when older people crap on younger people but there are some younger people who as you get at have no idea what the past was like and how hard your generation and my grandparents generation fought for changes. You will see me defend my generation from generalizations but you will also see me defend boomers. Individuals not generations is the issue. I confess I was a little irked when I saw Gloria Steinhem say that younger feminists were just trying to impress men by supporting Bernie over HRC and I still do think she could have perhaps articulated it better but there’s no doubt to me that a lot of people who are a little bit younger than me do take what was fought for and won for granted. We saw the VRA weakened in the Obama years by the Court and the purity purists still thought SCOTUS didn’t matter?

I have to admit I’m a bit frustrated by some people I’ve talked to who want to dismiss Sanders, Biden, and Warren’s age. Warren of those three I’m worried least about not just because she’s the youngest but also because she’s shown no sign of issues. Bernie by his campaign’s own admission had a heart attack and Biden has shown some signs of memory problems. I do worry less about Biden than Bernie due to the fact I think Biden could delegate better. I’m not impressed with Bernie Sanders as a team builder. Nina Turner, David Sirota, Jeff Weaver, and Tad Davine don’t inspire confidence.

91
Citizen K  Oct 8, 2019 • 6:05:15pm

If you don’t see them trying to ‘Hillary’ Warren with the way they’re pouncing on the story about her being fired for her pregnancy, the same way they torpedoed Kamala with the “ADOS” and “Kamala is a Cop” bullshit, then I honestly don’t know what to tell you.

re: #274 fern01

In c. 1973 I didn’t get a job (and I was the most qualified candidate) because I MIGHT get pregnant.

My mother was our breadwinner, because my father was disabled. And he had to sign for her to have a bank account, or a card account. Or a utilities account. Anything. The same was true when I got married in the mid 1970s. I didn’t like it, but didn’t fight it. Because my husband WAS the breadwinner. But my mother was really pissed!

On the other hand, there is a large and very vocal proportion of them that are now, very actively, trying to roll back civil rights to the 50’s, who have no problem with endless war, are eagerly trashing the planet, and are close to worshiping a corrupt president as a god emperor. So I can sort of see their point.

No matter how much they may have accomplished in their youth, absent the boomers and silent generation, there is no Trump. That’s just a demographic fact.

I think the mistake is in seeing “Boomers” as a monolithic bloc.

The ones who fought for civil and women’s rights, for the environment, against the war weren’t ALL OF us. It was a large fraction of us. And most of us who believed in that that then still hold those values

And a lot of our fellow Boomers resented all of that at the time and now that they’re old and fairly well off, they STILL resent it and want to take things back to how they imagined it was when we were kids.

And there are probably some who switched sides.

BTW, lest you think the white Boomer resentment is unique to our generation, remember the ‘hardhats’ who wanted to beat up the hippies back in the 60s. It’s not generational.

First of all, that seems wildly out of line with what I said- I said i can see their point because a large and vocal percentage of them are doing these things, not *all.* I did not say “all boomers suck.”

Nor did I try and defend white males in any way. (Also, you have absolutely no idea what demographic check boxes I might check, apart from age.)

Secondly, I already admitted in my follow up responses that the one demographic category I have identified as is also problematic. I also said that Frog Belly and Happy Warrior made valid points in counter to what I said. I was merely having a discussion why millennials and under might have a negative attitude towards boomers.

And lastly, the idea that the younger generations are the ones responsible for the election of Trump is just historically untenable.

Just look at this chart. Notice how wildly more people support Trump as you progress through the age ranges? And how even the percentage of males in the two younger classifications who support Trump trend lower than his support in older females? This is just a demographic fact. Personally, I’m pretty appalled how much support he gets among my age group. But the simple fact is it was support among boomers and older (who represent more of the population, btw) that got Trump elected.

Not all boomers. But enough of them.

Now if you want to have a reasonable discussion on the matter, cool. I have no problem with other people disagreeing with my viewpoint.

If, on the other hand, you want to yell at me in written form, you can do that too- but I won’t be responding.

They’ve been doing that one since Palin was NcCain’s VP. They crowed that Alaska is the biggest state in the Union. And yeah Alaska’s big size did present an unique set of problems that a more densely populated state may not have but the fact is Alaska definitely didn’t have a big economy either. I don’t get why winning California and New York is used to dismiss Dem votes. Are they not Americans there too? And yes I know the reason but I’ve always hated the real Americans crap and the right has been doing it for me to see since George Allen mocked an Indian-American student from NoVa. Or when Hannity sneered at the fact John Walker Lindh was from Marin County. The right is in the media never called out for their elitism towards urbanites. A lot of it is racism but also contempt for people who live in diverse areas.

The daughter of a friend of ours has adopted a dog that was hit by a car - suffered a broken leg as a result - and needs help to pay for the surgery:

Zena

Zena is a 11-month-old Great Pyrenees dog that was a stray until we met. She was hit by a car on the way to work one afternoon and now has a broken right front leg. This leg requires surgery in order to fix properly. The money raised here will help me pay for her surgery to have her leg fixed. She is a sweet, loving dog who loves cuddles and lots of treats. She means so much to me; she is becoming my emotional support dog to help me with everything going on in my life. I have my own struggles that I have to face along with her that make it hard for me to pay this amount of money. I am a full-time college student working part time, I had ovarian cancer that was removed in January. Zena came into my life for a reason and I feel that we are meant to be each other’s person and dog. She helps me by loving me and protecting me, and I help her by loving her and showing her how her life should be. She should be able to play with as many toys as she wants cuddle and be spoiled. Her favorite thing to do is lay in the bed and cuddle, she loves to be petted and if her leg where better she would love to chase toys and run around. I would be so grateful if y’all will help make Zena better so she can play with other puppies and continue to have a better life in a loving home such as mine.

This whole thing is already a mess. The PG&E outage website has been down most of the day, the 800 number is equally unreachable. People are getting automated calls that don’t match what the maps say. PG&E just doesn’t care. They’re a monopoly and you can’t sue them-they’re in bankruptcy already.

Overturning the results of an American election requires the highest level of fairness and due process, as it strikes at the core of our democratic process.

This really is the only thing resembling a “defense” they have left, the idea that impeachment is “overturning the election.” Why it’s so fucking stupid? They’re making it as an argument when Trump has admitted to the nation that he has tried repeatedly to influence the 2020 election in his favor.

Exactly. I’m sorry but he called for on TV for both China and Ukraine to investigate the Bidens. If any Democrat did anything close to that, there would be instant outrage but Trump as Pelosi said thinks he’s above the law. He’s not and he’s going to find out that most of the American people are disgusted by him.

50% support impeaching and removing Trump. One can debate the metrics of the poll and what those mean, but the overall picture remains the same: The nation is moving towards and not away from impeachment and now towards removal as well. The idea that Trump is going to ride this out and stand the same chance of reelection that he did a month ago is laughable.

Because it will be a further way to undermine her nomination, asserting that she did not win because she had better ideas or connected better with voters, but because Trump’s accusations of “corruption” were too much for Biden to overcome.

McCain, 34, married Domenech, 37, in November 2017, after her father John McCain was diagnosed with cancer.

“I think if you’re serious, which I was when I met my husband, about getting married and having kids and wanting to go to the next phase, I just found,” she said, “finally dating a conservative man was the one. He took it seriously.”

She does know that her daddy divorced his first wife to marry a liquor heiress after screwing around with several mistresses, yes? If not, she could probably ask her elder step-siblings about it.

I feel that saying congratulations on a long marriage (over 7 Yrs) is a social norm, but that to me feels like saying “well, aren’t you a lucky one”, meaning your relationship isn’t based on anything other than luck, unlike say communication, trust, mutual interests or the simple desire to always make the other be happy if they aren’t so.

It does seem to me that marriages based on the feelings between the two, rather then the norms of everyone else, will last longer.

Old enough to remember Republicans waving around pocket constitutions like Mao’s little red book. Apparently it was a prop they never bothered to read.

What he knows by this point is if the whole thing doesn’t get quashed in the House, with the way it’s snowballing way quicker than the Repubs ever imagined it would, then it’s going to be near impossible to just put the kibosh on a Senate trial. And there’s no good outcome for the party in such a scenario, just a series of increasingly shittier ones.

I think it’s a little more complicated. Like yeah I won’t be hostile to someone I know has different views but it’s hard for me to cosign if someone has awful views or in Bush’s case done awful things. I just don’t know where one draws the line. But it doesn’t bother me.

WaPo has annotated that WH lawyer letter. I was reading that at the same time I was hearing Repubs on the radio repeating over and over that the impeachment process wasn’t “official” because the full house had not voted on it. GAH. So two of the commentators on the letter pointed out that a House Committee (Select Watergate Committee) started in February 1973, and the Speaker “asked for an impeachment investigation immediately after the Saturday Night Massacre in October, 1973. The Judiciary committee voted to take up the measure and set up procedures. Legal Staff members were hired. Testimony was taken. The first full House vote I can find was in February 1974.”
