They don’t want to outright say that Trump has fucked up royally, but they can’t deny the situation that is rapidly going to shit. So they try to act as though all this “just happened,” as if it were something so inevitable that there’s no way we could have predicted it or acted to prevent it.

See, that’s the logical contradiction in their thinking, because they’ve all been convinced for years that she would have simply ramped things up and gone for the head of the snake. So to now suggest that she would have just left things simmering until Erdogan bullied her into allowing the Turks to massacre the Kurds doesn’t compute.

In keeping with this administration’s theme of being one long series of projections, we now get the sort of disorderly and confused retreat that they portrayed the negotiated withdrawal of combat troops from Iraq of being for years. There is no positive facet to all this, we’ve abandoned the field of battle for no reasons other than political ones. The blood of the fallen will be on our hands for years to come, long after Trump has been carted off to prison for his crimes.

So, back from trying to fire-safe my MIL house. All the pine needles out of the gutters and off the roof. The old lumber taken away from the side of the house. Grass cleared from next to the house. Next up sealing eaves and putting screen over the rain gutters. Sprinklers on the roof to wet the whole thing, and rinse solar panels from time to time.

Seeing ash on dry pine needles in the rain gutters made my heart race. Eff thaaat.

There’s a scifi & fantasy convention every Sukkot holiday in Tel Aviv (think Comic-Con, only smaller, saner and with as many academic lectures as fandom events - guests of honor are usually authors). What’s driving him nuts is that A) those threats aren’t being taken seriously and B) his counsel has no doubt told him privately that any such lawsuits would be slapped down before the ink was dry. It’s why we’re seeing the real Trump, as without his usual means of fighting off enemies he has little but bluster and begging.

1. Why would you want it sane?
2. What kind of “academic lectures” would you expect at a con?

1. Well for one thing, makes it easier to get tickets…
2. Actual ones in this case. It’s a rather interesting exception to the rule, owing to its origins as a tiny academic event focusing on science & literature at a time when fan communities & VIP guests were things to be seen only at a great distance (even today, it’s hard to bring people to the Middle East, & there wasn’t much of a community at the time). Since then, it’s expanded substantially, turned less serious and become much more popular, but its academic aspect never waned (per a friend, after last year’s annual call for proposals was sent, several hundred proposals for lectures and panels came in fast before the organizers just about begged folks to stop sending them; about 70 were accepted this year, and tickets for those events are nearly sold out).

Nah, move 3 is threatening to walk away from the table and leave the other party fucked. While that can mean declaring bankruptcy, it can also mean simply getting up and marching out. And I personally still expect that to be the final act of his presidency, announcing that he’s “done” with the whole mess because the Dems are being mean to him and threatening to resign if they won’t end their impeachment efforts.

I don’t doubt that for a moment, but I imagine that some small part of him is trying to justify all this and sees blaming Obama as the easiest way out. He got little of the praise for “defeating” ISIS, the fighting in Syria wasn’t drawing him any real accolades, and it was something that he’d repeatedly bashed Hillary for “starting.” So it makes sense that he’d see unassing without a plan as totally justified if he can spin it as a “promise kept.”

Would such a tape really be one step over the line for a party that thinks paedophilia is acceptable if it’s an old man trying to bang teenage girls, that getting spanked with a magazine by a porn star is a sign of “manliness,” or that “hiking the Appalachian trail” is cool if you “seek forgiveness”?

Given all those and others, having hookers pee on a hotel bed Obama once slept on would probably get no more than “troubled” and “distressed” noises from Congressional Republicans.

re: #94 Targetpractice

It might be real, but think about it for a sec.

This could all be true, but does Trump believe they are true?

This is a fairly horrific story.

A young woman’s one year old daughter died in a tragic accident. Mom hadn’t broadcasted it around, but her family knew, and they told their church. Which proceeded to broadcast it through the prayer chain. Mom received dozens of texts as a result.

It didn’t stop there.

The pastor of this church, knowing that mom is an atheist, proceeded to use mom’s daughter as a sermon illustration, irritating the heck out of mom.

friendlyatheist.patheos.com

Mom told the pastor off (as she should have). She also told the pastor that she planned on protesting at the church. The pastor then proceeded to have the police deliver a letter (mom lives in a town 45 minutes away) threatening her with arrest if she trespasses.

Mom was not stopped by this threat, she showed up at the church today and protested. She also said she was going back next Sunday.

Here’s mom’s Facebook: facebook.com

Now that I have that out of the way, I learned today that a church I picketed last year about their parent organization’s coverup of child sexual abuse has apparently split. Two of the pastors went and founded another church not far away and not part of the same organization (Sovereign Grace) as the old church. I had a couple of chats with one of the pastors of the new church when I was picketing and I’m thinking that maybe, just maybe, me being out there as an outsider let these guys know they needed to get the hell out.

I MAKE THE BEST DEALS!!

Sources in Turkey have indicated that while Erdoğan was talking big, he thought Trump would restrain him, a U.S. official familiar with the details told Axios’ Margaret Talev.

For example, Erdoğan did not expect — or want — a 30-km-deep (18-mile) buffer; that was assumed to be a negotiation aimed at getting something smaller.

//snip//

The source paraphrased their recollection of what Trump said on the call: “It was pretty blustery. Trump was like, ‘I don’t want to be there in the first place, but you know our guys are there. They don’t take s—t. We’re there. Maybe I don’t want to be there, but if you do a border crossing and come into conflict with our guys, they are way better equipped and you don’t want to do that.’” Trump’s message, the source said, was “don’t mess with the U.S. military.”
But after conveying that threat, Trump signaled he wasn’t going to keep his troops in Syria for long and was not going to be hanging around to protect the Kurds against the Turks, the source added. Trump said something to the effect of, “But you know I don’t want to be there. We’re there to defeat ISIS. My people tell me we are winning. … So hang tight. But you don’t want to get into a conflict with my guys,” the source recalled.

As long as he has all the GOPers, 5/4 SCOTUS judges, and ~40% of eligible voters, such an assessment is far too optimistic.

And the contours of this are easy to explain. The Trump/Moscow deal was worth $300 million to Trump, when his usual fee is more like $4 million. Putin offered him a deal to put up no money, all financed by a sanctioned Russian bank. In order for Trump to get his $300M, he’s got to lift sanctions. Without it, the deal is dead. Everything we see is about Trump trying to get paid, because he’s not actually wealthy and he’s in debt to the Russian mob.

That one’s from newspapers.

Used to be, the journalist would be frantically typing at their desk. At the bottom of the page, assuming they’re still working on it (which they usually are, there’s only about 300 words to a page with the wide margins & double-spacing and codes at the top), they’re write more-more-more, scream “COPY!!” and a copyboy would grab the page and run it down to the typesetters.

When they finished the story, they’d type -30- at the bottom. So the typesetter would know to close out the flat.

Another bit of historical newspaper lore:

In old movies, when somebody screams for newspapers when a woman goes into labor? It’s because big-city papers used to publish a morning edition, afternoon edition and late evening final. The presses ran hot enough to sterilize it. So a stack of the latest papers was guaranteed to be cleaner/healthier than whatever sheets and towels you had in your closets (also, super-absorbent and disposable, beats having to do laundry).
