I think every police car should have a defense attorney in it.

I consider police officer to be the third most important job, behind parenting and teaching. As such, they should be trained in both how to handle real situations, and understand our laws and their proper role in them. I could easily see this being a 1.5 to two year training. And then pay them properly. And hold them accountable.

This is one thing where it will be easier if we paid for college through our taxes.

Reminder to self: Control your temper and your responses when discussing Trump with your brother. It would have been far more effective to force him to respond to questions about Trump’s refusal to show his taxes in 2016, instead of just ranting. Ok he initiated the original provocation when he showed us the tickets he had to the Trump rally in Dallas but let’s be the adult in the room. And don’t let him get away with the now standard GOP response on how Trump’s conversation with Erdogan was really not ideal. Maybe force him to admit that Trump’s handling of foreign policy is totally incompetent and reflects his inability to listen to anyone except the voices in his head (and Faux News).

Or you could ask him point-blank why he’s totally cool with US allies (i.e. the Kurds) being massacred and tens of thousands of ISIS fighters going free (or is he willfully dumb enough to think they’ll only end up in Europe?)

Isis going to Europe is BS anyway. Thousands of tourists and business people visit ‘Europe on a weekly basis. ISIS can target Americans anywhere. Or perhaps “Pro Life” only means fetuses in the US. Who knows? Fuck trump.

No — he really did a Lindsey Graham thing and expressed his objection (but not as strong as Lindsey’s original response) but he minimized Trump’s incompetence (or outright villainy) by describing it as a bad idea and saying points that he thought Trump should have made, which involved imposing substantial financial sanctions on Turkey. I need to think more carefully when responding. My brother also believes that the Horowitz report is actually going to be attacking Democrats — the usual GOP belief that Obama and Hillary etc will be wearing orange jump suits.

Sounds like he’s gone all-in (like pretty much all other members of the trumpchump cult) to this mode:

Wehner believes conservative Trump supporters may be experiencing what he calls “cognitive accommodation” — they’ve adapted to so much unusual behavior that to turn on the president now would be too hard.

“At this point, condemnation of Trump is condemnation of themselves,” said Wehner. “It’s too painful. It’s less about defending Trump than defending their own defense of Trump.”

Maybe I’m being naive — but this clip seems like something that will receive complete rejection from the official GOP organizations. The party promotes extremism that leads to more radical supporters thinking that such a video will receive widespread approval — but my guess is that this is still a step too far. We still don’t know as yet who approved its showing and who actually viewed it.

From a couple of threads ago:

re: #229 Belafon

What I think it means is that Erdogan is like the dog that caught the car.

Erdogan has been demanding more freedom of action in Syria for years. However, he likely did not really expect, or want, to actually get involved in this mess. We kept the region quiet for him. If Turkey remains in Syria too long, it is going to be shot at. There is little upside/benefit for Turkey, staying there.

I suspect that Erdogan will accept Assad and Russia, at least in the short-term. Assuming that they can keep the border quiet.

The local minorities, Kurds, Christians, etc, when given a choice between ISIL and the Assad regime will also most likely choose the Assad regime. Their families have a better chance of surviving. Even if the SDF leadership may have to flee the country.

So, the former US allies have cut a deal with Assad and Putin, and are now their allies. We no longer have allies there. We are no longer providing anything of value to the locals. So we no longer have any voice in what happens there. We now need to get our troops out before the locals turn actively hostile.

Of course, everything is in chaos right now. So things could easily change.

In terms of Manbij…

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) is a US organized, trained and equipped local force. It consists of local minorities and Arab tribes. It took the US a long time to build it. Most of the first group of leaders we trained deserted to ISIL.

Anyway, once the US got the SDF up and running, one goal was to seal off the Syrian Turkey border. Much of that border was run by ISIL. Lots of supplies and recruits were coming in to ISIL there. The town of Manbij and the surrounding region were the last major area along the border to fall to SDF. It was a long slow and grinding offensive.

ISIL heavily defended it. Probably over 1000 SDF and 2000-4000 ISIL died there. (Including some of the ISIL best mid level combat leadership.) Not counting probably a 1000 civilian dead. With close to 80,000 more fleeing. Reportedly the US had to send Special Operations Forces into combat to support the SDF. Assume 3-5 injured for each kia, by the way. That is a lot of people.

That region had been stable since it was taken over by US proxies.

Assad was able to just drive in. And, like anywhere else in that region, when things change, I suspect there will be some score settling. And now Assad and Putin have more leverage with Turkey.

They’ll try false analogies. Like “you libs didn’t say anything about Kathy Griffin” as if KG is an active member of the Dem political leadership and ignore that she meant it satirically albeit in a way that was hard to convey. Trump and his allies hate the first amendment. They seek to punish anyone who isn’t enamored with Trump or calls him out for being a lying fraud.

re: #24 Interesting Times

Wehner believes conservative Trump supporters may be experiencing what he calls “cognitive accommodation” — they’ve adapted to so much unusual behavior that to turn on the president now would be too hard.

“At this point, condemnation of Trump is condemnation of themselves,” said Wehner. “It’s too painful. It’s less about defending Trump than defending their own defense of Trump.”

A few slightly disjointed thoughts:

It was reported downstairs that a state legislature seat in LA, in a district that went DT by 43% flipped democratic yesterday.

I remember GW Bush, and the same level of fanatic defense of him and his policies leading up to the Iraq invasion as we’ve been seeing of DT, and how it just… dissipated as the sheer awfulness of the policy became evident.

In the Soviet Union, most people believed the picture their government gave them of the world and their own situation. Until, rather suddenly, they didn’t, even though they’d been indoctrinated in it their entire lives.

More than 50% of the US population thinks that DT should be impeached and convicted.

So it would be the course of wisdom not to assume we know what public opinion will be next week, to say nothing of next year.

And keep working for better elected officials.

And don’t get complacent.

It’s not really the personal devotion he receives that is the problem, it’s that he receives it by being a bully, a thug, a misogynist, a racist, and a liar who has allegiance only to his bottom line and Putin. Those who support him share his noxious views. Adoration for such a man is toxic to our survival.

The problem Pence faces is he’s not even interesting. Trump is a fucking malignant narcissistic lunatic in the middle of a massive cognitive collapse but he managed to tap in to his followers’ need for spectacle and racial scapegoating. In comparison Pence is just such milquetoast boring ass piece of shit that I don’t think he’ll be able to pull off the conversion. He’s also gone all in on Trump and participated in the Ukrainian shakedown, so he’ll have a hard time separating himself from Trump’s clearly criminal acts. Lastly I think Pence’s hardline religious convictions helped the ticket as VP because it brought Christian conservatives on board, but I think it works against him at the top of any ticket for the same reason. He might get to finish Trump’s term, but that’d probably be it.

The real risk is how much horrible Republic of Gilead shit he pulls in that short time.

Not to mention that he’s spend the last three years licking DT’s ass. So he won’t be perceived as strong. Scientists endorse mass civil disobedience to force climate action

Almost 400 scientists have endorsed a civil disobedience campaign aimed at forcing governments to take rapid action to tackle climate change, warning that failure could inflict “incalculable human suffering.”

In a joint declaration, climate scientists, physicists, biologists, engineers and others from at least 20 countries broke with the caution traditionally associated with academia to side with peaceful protesters courting arrest from Amsterdam to Melbourne.

Wearing white laboratory coats to symbolize their research credentials, a group of about 20 of the signatories gathered on Saturday to read out the text outside London’s century-old Science Museum in the city’s upmarket Kensington district.

“We believe that the continued governmental inaction over the climate and ecological crisis now justifies peaceful and non-violent protest and direct action, even if this goes beyond the bounds of the current law,” said Emily Grossman, a science broadcaster with a PhD in molecular biology. She read the declaration on behalf of the group.

Your Brother is too far gone. He sounds like a Deplorable. Not sure you should waste your time trying to reach someone who is okay with and desires the imprisonment of innocent individuals like President Obama and Secretary Clinton. At this point, anyone who supports Trump is a racist lowlife, imho. He has shown who he is over and over again. If you support him, you support what he stands for and what he has done.

There are a lot of Deplorables who just delight in pissing people off, especially people they consider to be Liberal Snowflakes or similar.

There is no point in arguing with them. I just state that I found Trump unqualified & unsuited for the office of the Presidency both in terms of experience and character, and I have seen him say or do nothing that has changed my opinion of him.

It’s not really the personal devotion he receives that is the problem, it’s that he receives it by being a bully, a thug, a misogynist, a racist, and a liar who has allegiance only to his bottom line and Putin. Those who support him share his noxious views. Adoration for such a man is toxic to our survival.

Oh it’s the personal cult too. The whole claiming that no one works harder than Trump. Claiming Trump has done things that he obviously has not. But yeah that he inspires This despite being a shit person.

It’s projection all the way down.

Well yeah. Economic anxiety was just the media giving a pass to people who didn’t want to listen. You’re from a former industrial area. These places change. But I think what Trump appealed to was something baser. These people were so threatened by Obama’s admin more than Clinton’s because they really believed that Obama was the “affirmative action president.” And they mean that both for Obama personally and his administration. The fact is Obama democratized the WH by having many different people in his team and emphasizing that Americans of groups that were long ignored and discriminated against deserved equality too. Trump and the right wing media convinced millions of people that things like DACA, allowing transgendered people to serve in the military, etc were a war on whiteness. There are white people who benefited from DACA too. I’ll never forgive the right for years of telling my neighbors that my secular outlook and generally socially liberal beliefs were a war on their faith. Plus their stupid red baiting about how Obama was a socialist.

Obama could have been a poster child for the American Dream: namely that anyone who works hard enough can rise to the highest office in the land regardless of their racial or social origins.

But that would have meant acknowledging, however begrudgingly, Obama’s efforts and accomplishments, it was more convenient for them to portray his as someone who got in through Affirmative Action, buying votes with free stuff, exploiting White Liberal Guilt, and of course, forging his birth certificate…

The Conservative argument against Affirmative Action or most any government program is that we don’t need them, anyone who works hard enough can get ahead based on their own merits.

And Obama worked hard, not only got into Harvard Law School but went on to edit their Law Review…but that was dismissed in favor of retaining their narrative that those people still enjoy some sort of undue advantage.

re: #8 Charles Johnson

That’s a scene from the movie Kingsmen. In that scene, Colin Firth’s character is fending off a bunch of church extremists because the bad guy (Samuel Jackson’s character) has a device that causes aggression and violence). So he’s dancing as a puppet for the big bad.

Trump’s dancing to Putin’s tune (just as surely as he is for every other authoritarian out there who promises Trump the opportunity to slap his logo feces on a building somewhere).

Nothing Trump does is improving our national security; everything is damaging our security and long term economic interests. Trump doesn’t care about any of it. It’s all about Trump’s personal advancement. He’s using the WH to enrich himself and his cronies. And he’ll use foreign interference to remain in power all while abrogating his oath of office and destroying the rule of law to do so.

This video is exhibit A of stochastic terrorism in action and how his bigot brigade is willing to engage in violent fantasies against Trump’s perceived enemies - the media and those willing to stand up to Trump’s rampant criminality.

We’ve already seen right wing domestic terrorists carry out attacks using Trump’s rhetoric to justify and excuse their actions. This video will do more of the same.

The GOP in Congress will do what it usually does - deny, deflect, and obfuscate when asked about this video and the consequences. They will refuse to denounce Trump. They will continue to be enablers and complicit in Trump crimes.

It’s what they do. It’s their entire brand at this point.

Applies really to his whole life. He doesn’t face challenges. He runs from them and then blames someone else. He’s the opposite of a leader. That so much of our population embraced this says a lot about them. And yeah I know that they thought they wanted someone outside the political ecosystem but you know what, you should still value that your leaders act like leaders. Trump doesn’t act like a leader. He never has and he never will. He acts like a bad movie’s idea of a leader.

Welp, here we are.

When mosquito season brought past dengue outbreaks to regions across the Asian tropics, Nepal hardly had to worry. The high-altitude Himalayan country was typically too chilly for the disease-carrying insects to live. But with climate change opening new paths for the viral disease, Nepal is now reeling from an unprecedented outbreak.

At least 9,000 people — from 65 of Nepal’s 77 districts — have been diagnosed with dengue since August, including six patients who have died, according to government health data.

“We have never had an outbreak like this before,” says Dr. Basu Dev Pandey, director of the Sukraraj Tropical and Infectious Diseases Hospital in the nation’s capital, Kathmandu. With dozens of people lined up for blood testing on September 26 at the nearby fever clinic, set up this year to handle the outbreak, Pandey continues: “People are afraid.”

It’s straight up mob tactics where the mob bosses would send in guys who glower at the witness as intimidation tactics. There’s no reason for him to be there, and everyone knows it. The only reason he went in was to try and intimidate the witness into silence.

This is just more of the same obstructionism and complicity by GOPers with Trumpworld, which is a crime syndicate populated by stupid but canny con artists who know that their marks are even dumber than they are.

SRSLY: What do they need Matt Gaetz there for? It’s not as if the WH isn’t going to know what went on in the meeting anyway: either via one of the GOPers on the Committee(s), or one of their flunkies; probably by the time the adjourning gavel comes down, if not sooner.

1) A body does not lose all biological function immediately upon death. There is still neuroeletric activity going on among other things. Muscle spasms and nervous twitches are not uncommon soon after death. It’s obvious in the video the child hadn’t been deceased long.

2) Is it not logical that both of these videos were shot in the same location but at different angles?

3) Ever tried to get a child that small to do ANYTHING on cue?

4) The whole conspiracy theory is fucking stupid.
