lyrics:
i lay on the carpet
a wrench to let you in
carbonating emotion
tears rising to the rim

i fled to the walls, yeah
be sure I’m surrounded
where no one can find me

but there’s strength behind a lowered gate
a humble embrace
a vulnerable place

say you’re open through tears and trembling
it’s a major step
it’s ok to fret

here’s safe place to lay your heart down
it’s a second chance
it won’t be your last

letting my guard down
enough to be held close
there’s strength in the open
the broken and exposed

should i flee to the mountains
be sure i’m surrounded
where no one can find me
there’s strength within an open space
a humble embrace
a venerable place

say you’re open through tears and trembling
it’s a major step
it’s ok to fret

here’s safe place to lay your heart down
it’s a second chance
it won’t be your last

Well, the bomb cyclone has arrived. Woke me out of a sound sleep, sounding like a train rolling down my street. I have no real way of knowing, but these winds sound every bit as powerful as the ones that came with Hurricane Sandy.

I get the feeling I’m not going to get much sleep tonight.

Speaking of weather, there is a tropical depression trying to form in the Bay of Campeche:

The major models have this developing a bit more and moving into the GoM states on the 19th, but not at hurricane strength.

Looks like the DUP reactionaries are holding things up. Not a surprise, really - this is the same bunch that initially rejected the Good Friday Agreement, so their attitude is par for the course.

The DUP are hopelessly ass-backwards regressives.

Only nine comments in two hours? Everybody asleep around here? I’m surprised: given Trump lately, I would assume insomnia was now an epidemic. But here’s a good place for my Go Fund Me anyway:
Go Fund Me

This is the first October where I haven’t even thought about Halloween. I retired almost 2 years ago and enjoyed the festivities at work. And even when I was in layoff, I would at least think about putting out a bowl of candy for my fellow condo dwellers. But maybe its another symptom of trump.
Who can play scary when the rest of the world is scary?

I hate asking for money, but I’m retired now, and even though I’m going to get some answers, its going to be a few days running. And a month to straighten things out.

It’s something I’ve noticed with Twitter. Asian Twitter tends to trend during the night when things are slower here-a reminder that things are 12 hours later/earlier there. Lots of K-Pop stars who trend during this time of night (for us)

And yes, theocracy is one of the pillars of Putin’s power in Russia, another thing that makes him admired by the American Right. They would just replace Russian Orthodoxy with Fundamentalist Protestantism.

CarolJ  Oct 17, 2019 • 1:42:22am

The thing about theocracy is that the people speaking for God are really speaking for themselves and saying it’s God. While I do believe in an ultimate loving intelligence, I like to think that I’m not so arrogant to think that I speak for it-can barely speak to it. And in any case, if it isn’t real for you, then there’s no point in making you see what I see. And basing a political system on it is truly madness.

This is why I thank God for giving Founding Fathers the Divine Foresight to separate Church and State (of course I mean that ironically, to those Deists, Europe’s religious-based wars of the 16-17th century were recent history.)

Religion can serve as a basis for a personal moral and ethical code, and of course these can be reflected in the legislation that people enact. But holy scriptures and their varied and often conflicting interpretations make a lousy basis for any system of government.

Now let’s talk about Biblical marriage…

This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one:

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan put US President Donald Trump’s letter “in the bin”, the BBC has been told.

In the letter dated 9 October, and sent after US troops were pulled out of Syria, Mr Trump told Mr Erdogan: “Don’t be a tough guy. Don’t be a fool!”

Turkish presidential sources told BBC Turkish that the letter was “thoroughly rejected” by Mr Erdogan.

All this while we have both Trump himself and his kids trashing Hunter Biden. Trump and Jared haven’t met autocrats they haven’t wanted to work with.

This is what everybody else is up against:

The Week: Pastor at Pro-Trump conference: ‘We’ve come to declare war’

If the video depicting a fake President Trump massacring members of the media — which was condemned by the White House — wasn’t too much to handle already, ProPublica and WNYC released more disturbing audio from the conference where the footage was originally shown.

While speaking at the pro-Trump conference in Miami, Florida, at the Trump National Doral Miami, Mark Burns, a pastor, told the crowd multiple times that “we’ve come to declare war.” As he continued, he reportedly asked if anybody was “read to go to war for Donald J. Trump, this nation?” as the audience reportedly cheered him on.

Not ignore. They’re celebrating it. Trump said the Kurds were bad. Therefore they are. Trump has in a week gone from saying “we like the Kurds” to declaring them worse than ISIS. Why should anyone vulnerable in the future will trust us.

Meanwhile let’s check in with the Pulpit Pimps who proclaim Trump to be our king…

Trump “pro-life” evangelicals are now fiercely defending the murder of actual babies

dailykos.com

This is horrifying and disturbing. Yet the exact same people who claim to be “pro-life” and scream about the termination of a damn clump of cells are now justifying and excusing the murder of actual babies. This goes well beyond their glorification of assault rifles, or laughing at a stupid Trump video depicting a congregation getting butchered. This is downright depravity.

Ralph Reed recently went on a tear about how horrible abortion is, while in the same breath saying that evangelical Christians must obey Trump. He supports the Syrian slaughter because he literally argued that Trump was equal to God. His book was even entitled “Render to God and Trump”.

Paula White said opposing Trump was opposing God.

Robert Jeffress announced that he will submit and defer to Trump on his decision to allow the killing of the Kurds. He admitted what we already know: not one evangelical will change their vote over this.

Sure enough, at the so-called “Values Voter Summit”, which occurred after the Trump-approved genocide, all of the pastors prayed for Trump and commanded obedience to their Golden Calf.

And, as expected, reporters couldn’t find one right-wing evangelical willing to condemn him over this.

For the record, Trump has actually agreed with the evangelical claim that he was the “second coming of God”, and the “King of Israel”. In reality, he is dangerous sociopath who cages toddlers and now, allows them to be killed for his own nefarious purposes. That isn’t God-like at all. Rather, it is the personification of evil.

But these Christians rejoice when the Kurds are being slaughtered just like those same Christians turned their backs on the Jews and others when Hitler came to power in Germany.

Oh, I forgot…Candy ASS Owens saw nothing wrong with Hitler killing Jews as long as he only did it in Germany.

This base was the linchpin of their strategy to win in 2016: they could count on that hard core of 30% to get out and vote, all they had to do was to suppress enough of the other voters either through active measures or simply through indifference and apathy to guarantee them an electoral majority.

And even with all this, conservatives still cry Facebook is biased against them.

It’s for the same exact reason they complain and rage at the Times despite them basically ceding to the GOP’s every demand: it’s never enough. The existence of anything that isn’t their viewpoint is enough for them to scream bias, and the fact that these outlets are ceding ground does the exact opposite of assuage them. They instead take it as admission of bias and guilt and thus spurts them to rage all the more.

What will happen to Elijah Cummings’ seat in Congress after his death? Here’s what the law says.

When a Maryland congressional seat becomes vacant, Gov. Larry Hogan has 10 days to issue a proclamation stating a special primary election and a special general election will be held to fill the vacancy, according to the law.

The special primary election shall be held on a Tuesday that is at least 65 days after the proclamation was issued and the special general election shall be held on a Tuesday that is at least 65 days after the primary.

Hogan’s spokesman, Mike Ricci, said Thursday morning that it wasn’t clear yet when the special election would take place.

TIME Magazine:
Exclusive: How a Ukrainian Oligarch Wanted by U.S. Authorities Helped Giuliani Attack Biden

Good to see some coverage of this.

One thing I’m still like to get more information on:

Documents from the Firtash case have become even more useful to Giuliani and Trump as they roll out their response to the impeachment inquiry. At the center of Giuliani’s counterattack so far is the affidavit signed by Shokin, Ukraine’s former prosecutor general, which alleges that Biden caused Shokin’s dismissal in order to stop a corruption probe into Burisma, a Ukrainian gas company. Biden’s son Hunter sat on the board of that company for about five years, reportedly earning $50,000 a month.

I haven’t seen anywhere whether the affidavit has actually been submitted to the Vienna court where Firtash is fighting his extradition. As the article shows, claim is clearly bogus. It’s hard to believe that Shokin would expose himself to sanctions in a European court. And if it wasn’t actually submitted, it would be useful to know.

And there’s this:

The Doral club is a major part of Trump’s portfolio. It provides him more revenue than any other hotel or golf club, and he took out $125 million in loans to buy it.

But, in recent years, this keystone property has fallen into decline, with profits falling 69 percent in three years. An expert hired by the Trump Organization blamed the drop on Trump’s politicized brand.

The Trump crime family has clearly made the calculation that they don’t need to cover anything up, that they’re going to get away with everything because the Republican Party is in their pocket. So they’re flaunting their crimes now, enjoying the feeling of power.

If the GOP turns on Trump, they lose their power base.

Just as with Brexit, give a politician the choice between trashing their country or losing power, the answer is a no-brainer.

Once Al Gore came out as an advocate for climate change, they were compelled to deny it out of sheer cussedness.

I do not want to blame Gore at all for speaking out, but it was a bit presumptuous of him to assume he could just declare himself an Elder Statesman and promote a non-partisan cause to the benefit of all Americans and of humanity without facing purely political backlash.

I can’t blame him for that because there are people who certainly started being more aware of the issue because he brought it up. That’s on them. That’s their derangement problem. I know you’re not blaming Gore but Gore should have no regrets. It’s 100% on conservatives and their contempt for anything that isn’t thought of by a Republican.

That’s my point. It wasn’t merely Gore. It was playing to the worst parts of their base. They could have decided even if they didn’t want to frame it as an environmental issue, they could have framed it as a national security one but they didn’t. Trump. Got. Rolled. Again.

From Maddow:

(1) turkey wants to push the kurds out of that part of syria.
(2) trump gives ‘em the OK to invade.
(3) pence brokers a “deal” in which the kurds… must get out of that part of syria.
(4) the US agrees to un-sanction turkey.

that’s a “deal” like being mugged is a deal.

If he would just commit to running as a 3rd Party candidate in 2020, to peel off the “Decent Republicans” to a new party, and also nominate an entire slate of candidates to run at the state and local level, a lot of this awfulness could be wrapped up in the next 13 months.

Last year, I would’ve still granted that “honor” to GW Bush due to the sheer body-count factor (Iraq war, Katrina, etc). Thanks to Puerto Rico, border deaths, and this fiasco, however, I think trump will soon have him tied if not beat.

Adam Silverman states the other big problem:

That’s right, you’re not crazy, you’re not hallucinating Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo, on orders from the President, just ceded 20 miles of Syria to Turkey. Land that Syria’s Kurds have long claimed as a homeland where they deserve self determination and recognition as a nation-state. This was done unilaterally. Without consulting with the Syrians. Or the UN. Or Congress. Or seemingly anyone else. I’m sure Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs got asked for their opinions though. The President definitely knows how to get a real estate deal done!

Keep in mind, Facebook’s early years aligned with the bubble years of 2006-2009. There were plenty of venture capitalists looking to invest in all sorts of tech companies. And having a “losing” investment on paper probably helped their overall portfolio by mitigating some gains; then once the IPO came, they made everything back

A new study says there could be a surprising consequence to losing weight later in life

Researchers found the association between weight gain and mortality weakens as you get older and losing weight in middle age or late adulthood may heighten the risk of premature death, particularly when it comes to heart disease.
