Hi Lizards,

Mick really helped out a bunch today didn’t he? Nice to see he issued a correction blaming the press for just showing the world what he said.

I’d be surprised if he has a job by the time Trump gets back from Texas.

I could easily believe that Trump sent him out there specifically to say that, thinking that if he says it out in the open, that means it’s not a crime or impeachable because he hasn’t tried to hide it.

He only has the job because nobody else wants it, and Trump reportedly loved what he said. He’s also still OMB director, so getting rid of him creates two vacancies.

I have no idea what’s going to happen but wouldn’t be surprised if they go all in on the Big Lie that we didn’t see what we all saw.

From downstairs:

re: #79 Blind Frog Belly White

Trump’s base actually LOVES the idea that he’s extorting a foreign country to get dirt on the Dems. Remember, these clowns contain many who believe in QAnon, and they’re CONVINCED of the truth of every single crazy, stupid, impossible conspiracy theory. This is what they’ve been waiting for, for years - someone who would use any means to attack the people they’re absolutely convinced think they’re ignorant, racist hicks.

Back when we were being called ‘treasonous’ for criticizing GWB’s handling of Iraq, these people thought that was ‘being too nice’ and ‘letting the Dems trample all over us’.

Really, it’s not so much the whole QAnon BS as it is decades of post-Watergate programming by Nixon’s cronies and the proto-wingnuts who defended him. All the major points of the defense for the Watergate break-in are there:

1. “Both sides do it” - i.e. getting “dirt” through illegal means is “common”
2. “Dems don’t want to talk about Chappaquiddick/Hunter Biden” - i.e. impeachment is a “distraction” from a far worse Dem “scandal”
3. “They’re just angry they lost the election” - i.e. impeachment is just “revenge”
4. “This is ‘normal’ foreign policy” - i.e. what looks blatantly corrupt is just “business as usual”
5. “This is about hurting the president/his reelection!” - i.e. impeachment is a political move rather than about holding him accountable
6. “They just got caught!” - see “both sides do it”

it’s the same as I tried to explain to people decades ago about why some are attracted to motorcycle gangs and gangs in general.
The gangs are family and are providing some serious “this is what you are missing” and “this is what you need” and “we are the ones who will welcome and take care of you”.

Saw it happen with the Palin fanbois and gurls with their “Conservatives for Palin”, which is now seriously defunct because of all the infighting and, well, Palin herself just became a freaking joke to all but the less than a half dozen diehards.

Reason number 1 why Trumpism exists:

In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace

The slow anguished death of belief systems is causing a great challenge to fundamentalists, who now have to reconcile why people are refusing to buy their goods.

Warren, Butigieg?

I have a theory about the decline. The dates seem to coincide with the internet. The internet brought the wide variety of religious beliefs to a person’s desktop. Once that happens, it’s hard to believe that your denomination knows all the answers. Plus, being online is pretty time consuming, and going to a weekly service interferes with that a great deal, plus the internet will never call you a sinner.

This is at the same time as many religions, not just Fundamentalist Christianity, are embracing literalism, biblical inerrancy, and back to the past social and political beliefs. The old days, you can just come and listen for an hour. Now they want a rigid lifestyle and unquestioning beliefs at a time when there are more options. Being religious is harder, the practices are more timeconsuming, and there’s no online option: you have to get dressed and go out on a certain day and usually at a certain time.

It’s the 21st century, so the president can’t be everywhere. The Vice President is being used more and more, and I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing. I definitely think the VP in the next administration will be needed to help undo some of what Trump has done. Given this, who of the current presidential candidates would you want as VP to carry the president’s message? Pick anyone, we’re just assuming they wouldn’t win the nomination for this exercise.

Warren/Harris ticket.

The thing is, don’t expect Barr to just totally whiff on the report, there’s going to be a bone somewhere in there thrown to Congressional Repubs who desperately want to change the subject from Ukraine and back to Obama and Hillary. Whether it’s that the FISA court was “abused,” or that Page and Strzok violated departmental policy, or that the WH knew more than it let on, there will be something in the report that will lead to demands that Pelosi bring impeachment to an end and immediately bring Horowitz in to testify about his findings.

Reason number 1 why Trumpism exists:

In U.S., Decline of Christianity Continues at Rapid Pace

The slow anguished death of belief systems is causing a great challenge to fundamentalists, who now have to reconcile why people are refusing to buy their goods.

This leads to the faux “persecution” syndrome.

Spent much of the day at my daughter’s house. She needed to go do some work-related thing (still on maternity leave, but there was a meeting.) Anyway, she felt taking a four month old who had received a bunch of vaccinations yesterday, was probably not a plan, so I went over to babysit. Why yes, granddaughter was fussy, tired, and in need of a little cuddling and spoiling, so it worked well.
They certainly do vaccinate for a lot of stuff these days. It’s sort of amazing-and a good thing, but I can see where some people might find it sort of overwhelming and not want to give them all to their infant/child. Personally, I prefer my granddaughter not get some horrible, preventable disease, much less pass it on to others.

Trump’s Nuremberg rallies continue and his supporters appear more devoted than ever. This cannot end well for our nation.

OTOH Father Coughlin had a devoted following during the 1930’s and yet his base disappeared after our government silenced his broadcasts after the start of WWII. No one will silence Trump in modern social media but people can become irrelevant. And hopefully that is the fate that will await him and every member of the GOP who supports him. Because my hours changed at work, my commute to/from work has become more tedious, so I’ve started to listen to books. (It will get even more tedious next month, when my hours move to 8 to 5 with the end of Daylight Stupid Time for everyone outside of Arizona.) This distracts me somewhat from the people who can’t be bothered to use their turn signals.

The book I’m listening to right now is “Billion Dollar Whale” by Tom Wright and Bradley Hope, two Wall Street Journal reporters. It’s about the rise of Jho Low and the 1MDB sovereign wealth fund scandal. In between the eye popping descriptions of Low’s spending (seriously eye popping), there’s trenchant criticism of how little serious oversight there is of the vast sums of money moving about in world markets and how so much of that oversight is little more than perfunctory. For example, I’d never considered how IOLTA (Interest On Lawyers’ Trust Accounts*) accounts could be used to mask insane money movements. Low used the IOLTA account of a New York white-shoe firm founded in the 1870s to pass through a few hundred million dollars. Apparently banking regulators in other countries have been critical of IOLTA acounts, which I didn’t know.

I’ve gotten in the book up to the autumn of 2009, just after Low set up a joint venture between 1MDB and a kind of shady Saudi oil firm, and in the process of getting the $1 billion from 1MDB, managed to siphon off $700 million of that money. At the time, Low was 28 years old. Some of the money siphoned off later is alleged to have been used to fund “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

While “Billion Dollar Whale” was released a year ago in the US, it only just recently found a distributor in the UK, because Low (who is in hiding) has retained the law firm Schillings to make accusations of libel.

theindependent.sg

Interestingly, this is similar to the hooraw surrounding Ronan Farrow’s “Catch and Kill”, which was the subject of a libel threat in Australia this week, but again, booksellers are selling the book.

theguardian.com

Do I think “Billion Dollar Whale” is a good book? It’s certainly hard to stop listening to. I’ve had to pry myself away from the car to go in to the office.

* money lawyers hold in trust, the interest is scooped off the top and used for indigent defense, that sort of thing.
