I have long since lost my ability to be optimistic, at best I concede that things have to get a lot worse before they can get better.

They still aren’t bad enough.

And as Prez, Trump still has a lot of aces up his voluminous sleeves that he can pull out if he feels too cornered.

Still recovering from timezone travels here. There were many days when we didn’t know which of several zones the car clock, laptop, and cell phones were giving us. Did you know parts of Arizona (no DST) are on Navajo Time? 1050 Zulu is 0430 Navajo, 0330 Arizona, 0530 here in Baja Alabama.

It’s complicateder than that. Arizona is the only state that does not change its clocks. But the Navajo Res, extending as it does into parts of UT, CO and NM, does. But the Hopi Reservation, totally surrounded by Navajo land, does not…

When all the boots on the ground start hearing their mentors squeaking in this way. They better start paying attention.

If the 4th leg came in quickly and decisively and said Fat Donny “decided not to run” and he would be available for comment as soon as he moves out.

I believe exile should be a viable option.

Pack Both families up with a one way tickets to Turkey and revoke their passports for several generations.

It’s just all so bad right now. I don’t know too many rank and file military members. My cousin’s son enlisted in the USN but I’ve barely talked to him. The Trumps in exile would be fine with me though they won’t go away easy.

Naw, it’s not a hard choice at all. It’s the only option. There’s no legitimate reason to vote for Trump in 2020 (just as there was none in 2016).

HappyWarrior  Oct 18, 2019 • 4:22:11am

I think what gets me most angry at Trump and man there’s a lot. It’s just his complete disregard for life. The way he just described Turkey as “cleaning up”. We’ve had bad Presidents but he really is malicious. It’s all about him and his legacy. I can’t even say he’s misguided. It’s simple cruelty.

He was always making cameos in the 90’s. This was before I went to NYC frequently. He really seemed like a caricature of the worst stereotypes of New Yorkers, the business world, & the 80’s. I’d like to ask people who think he’s so successful when they ever drank Trump vodka with a Trump steak and then flew on Trump airlines. It’s a clear violation of the Emoluments Clause of the US Constitution, and the GOP will wring their hands and do nothing, enabling Trump to personally profit from the decision to have foreign powers pay to attend.

The GOP and the so-called originalists are silent. Strict constructionists of the Constitution - aka right wing judicial activists - are silent.

Why? This is a clearly impeachable high crime. They don’t care.

I don’t know if it is planned or instinctive, but this is a way to make his supporters shrug at his corruption and say, “hey, everybody does it.” This is how a state and society rots.

“As Trump and his allies strenuously make the case that Biden used his position as VP to enrich his family, Chief of Staff Mulvaney announces that the G7 will take place at Trump’s Doral resort.”

I hope Trump does succeed at one thing and it’s shutting the hell up egotistical businessmen who think their corporations are anywhere near similar to running a nation. Yes, there are some principles we can apply from business to government. But we can do without the businessman who only cares about profits in our elected offices.

Won’t happen, like Steyer they will just argue(rightfully so) that Trump is a horrible businessman so you haven’t tried a real businessman yet.

If Trump had been elected on his business skills rather than his racism, you could make the argument that he ran the wrong kind of business to manage government. You would need to pick someone who ran a company large enough that they weren’t involved in most of the company’s decisions. That definitely doesn’t describe Trump.

He fancies himself a modern day George Patton just like General Petraeus did. And you know what, Patton did deserve his props as a commander but both these guys should have been looking at General Marshall as their role model. Maybe that’s out of bounds for a civlian like me to say but I really don’t have much use for Mattis either who is only hitting back against Trump since Trump insulted him.

I heard this from another conservative today. The premise is if Democrats choose someone they deem “too liberal,” Republicans will have “no choice” but to re-elect Trump. It’s an interesting way to unburden themselves of any real responsibility.

Those people will vote GOP out of sheer cussedness no matter who the Dems nominate.

That should not even be a consideration.

They don’t get a say in who the Deomcratic Party nominates to fix the fact that their party and ideology are fucked. I’m sick of their emotional blackmail shit. Either accept who we nominate and vote for them and then focus on fixing your party. Otherwise STFU about who Democrats nominate. The GOP saw how Romney failed to motivate the Bigot Base in 2012.

But for 2016, they figured out that getting that base out to vote in the right places, along with some targeted voter suppression and disinformation, would give them an electoral majority, if not a popular one.

But now they are locked into a repeat of that approach for 2020 and the nation is slightly more wary of it, and a lot of previously apathetic or indifferent voters are not going to stay away from the polls this time.

Okay, let me stop you there. The GOP didn’t see shit with Trump. I guarantee if we ever saw internal RNC emails as Trump rose in the polls and started winning primaries, they were fretting. It’s why so many of the GOP were distancing themselves after the Access Hollywood tape. You give them way too much credit and give way too little credit to the ignorance of the American voter. They’re not some geniuses who saw that Romney establishmenttarians weren’t working. They’re a bunch of chickenshits who got an asshole nominated and tried to do everything to distance themselves from him when they thought he would bring them down and then he won with a little help from American ignorance, apathy, and Trump’s Russian pals.

Even Michael Moore had the GOP strategy figured out and told us about it in the summer of 2016. I dismissed it then, but turns out he was right.

Maybe it was an improvised strategy, but once the GOP got into it and started focusing their efforts on the swing states of PA, OH,MI and WI, they knew they had a better chance with Trump than with any of the other candidates on hand.

Once again you are acting like this was some grand strategy by the GOP leadership and Trump. It certainly was not. Moore was right I concede but what Moore and you contineu to miss is that ti wasn’t some grand strategy. It was a result of happenstance. Basically my thesis is the GOP honchos figured “Fuck, we’re stuck with Trump. Clinton will win and we’ll do everything to obstruct her and then force Rubio or Cruz on the population as a fresh young face in 2020.” Although I’m obviously pissed Trump won and hate what it’s done, a Trump victory may have been a short term victory resulting in a long term GOP defeat for the GOP and right. Trump has actually moved the country to the left on a couple issues.

I thought she started out as a HRC backer in the DNC leadership and then flipped to Bernie. Either way, she’s awful. I don’t know how so many progressives convince themselves that she’s an ally and one of the ogod guys. She’s not. It’s not merely that she opposed gay marriage. She was homophobic about gay rights. It’s not that she opposed the Syria policy of Obama. It’s that she did so from an Islamaphobic perspective and stanning for Assad and opposing Syrian refugees. And her refusal to condemn Trump’s actions repeatedly. The good things is I think her constiunets see the writing on the wall and will vote her out in the primary.

Speaking of buses…

[Embedded content]

The no-shows provoked a wave of anger, accusations that the “deep state” had colluded to stop a show of Trump support in Washington, and negative reviews aimed at US Coachways.

But US Coachways has a simpler explanation for what happened—it was never paid for the requested buses due to a series of declined credit card payments.

“We want to get people down there,” Joseph Heap, US Coachways’ chief marketing officer, told The Daily Beast. “But unfortunately, payment is required.”

For those who made it to the rally, the missing buses were a subject of anger, consternation, and conspiracies. Rally speaker and One America News personality Jack Posobiec compared the bus issue to social media companies “deplatforming” conservatives.

“I hear there was a buses issue today,” Posobiec said. “The company refused to work with folks.”

And Women for America First, the organizing group, quickly blasted the bus company in a press release, accusing US Coachways of stopping “hundreds of Americans from exercising their first amendment rights.”

“Last night, less than two hours before our first chartered buses were supposed to leave for DC, we were informed that the bus company was cancelling all of our buses—including ones that were fully paid for,” the statement read. “This move left hundreds of grassroots activists stranded and unable to attend the Anti-Impeachment rally today in front of the Capitol. We are incredibly disappointed at US Coachways, their actions prevented hundreds of Americans from exercising their first amendment rights and to have their voices heard.”

For those who couldn’t make it because of the absent buses, the vitriol was even more direct. Disappointed Trump fans took to social media and business review sites to vent their frustrations at the company.

Deep state is diabolical,” tweeted one rallygoer. Another asked Fox News host Tucker Carlson to investigate.

Trump supporters gotta be the most dumbest sobs I know. So as we all know Cummings died yesterday. The Baltimore Orioles facebook page posted their condolonces to him. And one of the Trumpers was raging NO ONE SHOULD MAKE MONEY FROM POLITICS. This of course on the day that Mulvaney did what he did with Doral. I swear these people are so desperate for a white savior that they will accept anything that Trump does and act like everyone who dare criticizes him is a criminal. It’s a political cult like I’ve never seen before.

Trump’s lost Conservative pundit Matt Lewis. He’s still delusional about what Republicans were three years ago, but he can’t stomach what the party is today.

And they warn of creeping socialism all while lying to people about how Democrats want to take away their Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security (DARVO is one heck of a drug, especially coupled with cognitive dissonance and sociopathy).

I wouldn’t hold my breath, but I can’t rule some story about someone chopping the entire contents of one of those boxes into some local dish and promptly setting the kitchen, ambulance and ER on fire…

It’s amazing isn’t it? But I expect little reasoning from the people who made Rush Limbaugh into a household name.

Oh and if it’s just about investigating Senator Kennedy, please nicely tell us why your pal Trump acts like it’s TREASON for the House to investigate him. His actual countrymen. re: #143 Eclectic Cyborg

America is A) a lot bigger than the other countries that did this and B) I remember very well how ACA was treated by a gullible public. If more of my fellow Americans stopped seeing any government involvement in health care as ebil socialism, universal might have a chance. Trust me, I’m sympathetic to a lot of the goals but I don’t know how the hell you get there when ACA was made out to be Stalinist. Ask France to switch to the Dollar overnight.

They didn’t switch from another existing health care system to their current one overnight. A lot of them, as part of recovering from WW2, instituted a new system. That would have been easy.

As much as I hate the current system, we can’t just upend it. If we passed a law say that everyone shall convert to Medicare, there would be major lawsuits, the people I work with would throw a fit about how Medicare is bad - think of how many times you hear about it in the news, and why don’t you hear about private companies as much (because Medicare is forced to be audited) - and would not want to switch.

You don’t just flip a third of our economy on a whim.

I would add (then I have to run) that “Medicare for all” is a good way to begin the switch, because it provides a fixed level of coverage, but also for supplemental insurance for what it doesn’t cover. That would ease the pain for the largest share of medical costs and allow some flexibility with the details. Also, allow for phasing out the private part over time after the big start.

Pete’s suggestion of Medicare for all who want it would be a good direction to go, because, eventually, companies will start seeing that as a better way to go than trying to switch providers to keep costs down.

Is he talking about “President” Trump? IANAL, but I think that the President is a “public figure”, and that under prevailing jurisprudence the “maximum extent” of those “remedies” for unflattering press coverage starts around zero and ends up in the region of bupkis.

We can’t seem to work out a lot of things because a sparsely-populated interior is implacably opposed to policies that support and/or benefit wealthy, densely-populated, diverse cities. We can’t seem to work out a lot of things because a sparsely-populated interior is implacably opposed to policies that support and/or benefit wealthy, densely-populated, diverse cities. And both the Senate map and the electoral college gives that sparsely-populated interior a lot more power than their numbers would suggest.

Exactly.

Be fun when the Whitehouse meth lab explodes.

“Lab”?

Jeez, you’d think a rich guy like Trump would be able score his crank through better channels than having to cook his own! He has that quack sawbones in NY on the payroll (the one who keeps providing those glowing reports on how utterly fucking healthy His Orange Fatassedness is) - he should be able to get hold of some pharmaceutical-grade stuff for the POTUS - probably out of the Sacklers’ private medicine cabinet…

But no, not Our Donald! He’s going to go the “Everyman” route: grinding up Sudafeds on the Resolute Desk blotter, and snorting them up though a straw (a plastic straw, of course, just to own the libs).

re: #221 Belafon

Ask France to switch to the Dollar overnight.

And odd example. France actually did that. (For values of “dollar” equal to “euro”).

They didn’t switch from another existing health care system to their current one overnight. A lot of them, as part of recovering from WW2, instituted a new system.

Many countries instituted a new medical system at the same time as rebuilding their whole economies after a catastrophic war. They all had existing, unsatisfactory systems before the switchover, which obviously didn’t happen overnight, but was pretty fast.

So there isn’t the will.

You don’t just flip a third of our economy on a whim.

Actually about 17%. About the same as Sierra Leone (ok I’m being sarky).

World average is 10%, most European countries are around 10-11%.

Having served on a Nimitz class carrier, I will say that it is pretty impressive. But a carrier is about a thousand feet long, so it’s still not doing speed boat donuts. And they were only able to do those because the ship was prepared. We did a 10 degree bank on the carrier I was on, but they forgot to tell the galley, and things went sliding and breaking.

We won’t turn turn it quickly, even if we’re all on board. And I guarantee you a whole lot of people won’t be on board (look at the ACA). The we here means the public, and I’m talking about health care.

People take fictional TV for real life, for chrissakes, and when it makes the slightest pretense to be Real Life, they take it as Divine Scripture

It wasn’t too long ago that I saw comments from utter vacuum-heads INSISTING that documentaries are un-edited, that the camera isn’t turned off from first shot to last, and if there is any editing, it isn’t an honest documentary.
Many Americans seem stunningly ignorant of how most media works. Even non-stupid people I know are sometimes surprised when I tell them that a shot of somebody’s reaction to something might be from hours or even days before or after.
The American people are surprisingly and dismayingly vulnerable to manipulation.

The GOP continue their lawsuit to overturn the ACA; Trump and GOP controlled states are intent on invalidating the ACA, ignoring that it would eliminate the protections against discriminating against those with preexisting conditions (charging them more, denying coverage, etc.) and that hits nearly 25% of the population.

Throw in the millions more who’d lose coverage directly, and you’d take a massive hit to the economy, and hospital bankruptcies would accelerate to say nothing of the medically induced bankruptcies spawned by spiraling costs.

You are assuming that people who voted for Stein would have voted for Hillary if Stein wasn’t on the ballot. There were as many write ins as there were Stein voters in some cases, so maybe there would just be more write ins, or blanks, or Gary Johnson voters. It isn’t like anyone thought Stein was going to win, so people voted for her because they did not want to vote for Hillary or Trump.
