It’s even weirder than what’s in that thread:

Gabbard recalls her childhood as lively and freewheeling: she excelled at martial arts and developed a passion for gardening; she was a serious reader, encouraged by her parents. But a number of Butler’s former disciples recall a harsher, more authoritarian atmosphere. Defectors tell stories of children discouraged by Butler from attending secular schools; of followers forbidden to speak publicly about the group; of returning travellers quarantined for days, lest they transmit a contagious disease to Butler; of devotees lying prostrate whenever he entered the room, or adding bits of his nail clippings to their food, or eating spoonfuls of sand that he had walked upon.

I would, if only it weren’t so obvious that sooo many of his crimes appear to the result of him being far too stupid to realize he’s actually committing one. He really thinks that all of us, or at least the *smart ones,* would do the exact same thing, if they were in his shoes.

There’s a story on Daily Beast (behind a paywall) that addresses this:

Rudy Giuliani’s Big Lie: He Actually Knows Jack Shit About Crime and Security

He’s paid big bucks by people all over the world for security advice that, history shows, he’s unqualified to dispense.

They had a cool story on the news this evening. Some elementary school here in Texas has a new student that currently only speaks Russian. Her teacher is using Google translate to talk to her. But, come to find out, there’s another girl her age, also Russian, who speaks both Russian and English. After the two discovered each other, they put the two girls in the same class.

An interesting note: the news story didn’t name the elementary school, I’m pretty sure to protect the school and the students.

Daily Beast is one of the few paywalls I’m tempted to pony up for.

Unfortunately, I only have so much money to throw down the bottomless pit of subscriptions, add-ons and what-ever-revenue-stream-lock-downs that are, apparently, the cost of being alive at this particular moment in time.

Sure, $10-$12 doesn’t seem that much- until you multiply it by 500. Especially when that $10-$12 equals an hour of your life.

I mean, how much extraneous income do you guys think I have, after paying for my tattoos, my avocado toast, my bacon appetizers and my soy-milk-lattes?

(I kid! I have no tattoos. And I’m not fond of bacon or avocados.)

Yeah, been there. For what it’s worth, feel your pain. A bit of escapism is sometimes really the only thing that makes life bearable, if you’re in a certain space.

It’s weird that, if you can blow thousands on coke and courvoisier, that’s just you being awesome and whatnot; but if you lower yourself to something as basic as a couple of beers and/or some weed a night, you’re some sort of reprobate.

It’s D-day in the UK:

Brexit vote result LIVE: MPs to decide on Boris Johnson’s deal in Commons showdown

The DUP are desperate to not to have to make a decision:

DUP will consider backing amendment to UK PM Johnson’s Brexit deal

Boris Johnson’s Northern Irish allies will consider backing an amendment which would delay any immediate decision on the British prime minister’s Brexit deal when it comes before parliament on Saturday.

[…]

[DUP] had already said it would not vote in favour of
the deal because of its customs implications for Northern
Ireland.

Trump’s treachery is obvious to all, especially to those outside the the bubble.

The painful paradox of Global Britain

Beyond vague slogans and nostalgic evocation of bygone glories, Brexiteers have always struggled to articulate a coherent vision of Britain’s place in the world once it leaves the European Union.

What they do know is that the US will loom large in that post-Brexit future. Once free of the regulatory shackles of Europe, the thinking goes, Britain can renew the special relationship, turning definitively to its more natural ally across the Atlantic as a partner in trade and diplomacy.

What the Brexiteers tend not to acknowledge is that the world has changed since the 2016 referendum. To see how this affects their project, they need only have looked at the unfolding crisis in northern Syria this week. Under Donald Trump, US alliances have been rendered void.

The Kurds, the US’s most reliable ally in its fight against Islamic State, have discovered in the most terrible circumstances that their close involvement with the Americans on the battlefield ultimately counts for nothing. It’s a lesson that South Korea, Japan, Germany and several other Nato states have already had to absorb. In other words, Britain is pinning its hopes on a partner who has never been less trustworthy.

I tried to link to a comment from another thread, but whatever: I also think that the vote for Gabbard was also going to be enhanced by Republicans voting in Dem primaries because of no competitive primaries of their own. It was supposed to be Tulsi vs Hillary, and the Republican votes were to enhance her stature when she finally lost to Hillary-the establishment candidate. In this move, Tulsi would have been the “anti-war” candidate, ignoring all her anti-choice and anti-gay positions. But they would have hoped to also capitalize on whatever POC credentials she has, somewhat Asian and female to obscure that. Well, at least 3-4 POC are running, at least 4 women, and a partridge in a pear tree, enough diversity to satisfy would-be complainers. Tulsi is left with no assets at all.

They never really calculated that Hillary would stay out of the race. They never thought that there would be a whole field of perfectly acceptable candidates, enough to drown Tulsi out and make her candidacy less than a joke.

The easiest way to do that is to go into that thread, click the reply button for the comment you want to link to, then copy the link code and paste it into your reply here. Another way is to click on the comment number, copy the URL of the page where the comment loads by itself, then go to the thread you want to post it in, click on the “chain link” looking button above the text entry field and paste the URL into the window that pops up.

They never really calculated that Hillary would stay out of the race.

Because all they have is confirmation bias. It was utterly absurd to think she was going to run again, for a lot of reasons but mostly because she’s intelligent and genuinely wants what’s best for the country.

It’s an easy tell. No Dems ever really expected Hillary to be a political factor in this race, and even less to actually run. Putin, and therefore the Russian establishment, have such a hate boner for Hillary that they have marked her as the Eternal Enemy and of course expect to see her behind every tree. The only people on the “left” who are obsessed with her at this stage are the ones who are compromised.

The Tulsi fan club got #IamTulsi trending. It’s a pity party, with the Bernie Bros and Jill Stein crowd chiming in. It has the distinct smell of eau de Russian Bot.

I didn’t realize how young Tulsi was. She’s 38. I’ve been voting Democratic longer than she has been alive. She may be old enough to run for president, but I know enough about her background (grew up in a Hindu cult, has NOT disavowed it), is an Assad apologist, is a supporter of Modi, is wobbly on choice and is probably anti-LGBTQ if you pressed her very hard. Nope, she’s in the wrong damned party.

Tulsi if she were as smart as her fans think she is could have stayed quiet or at least not responded like HRC was talking about her but when she responded and the way she responded the way she did, it’s got people looking at Tulsi. Now people are going to be wondering why David Duke likes a Democratic candidate. Now and this is why Tulsi’s supporters are fucking marks, the Trump right will try to both sides the fact that Trump is liked by Duke and Gabbard is. Ignoring the fact that Gabbard of all the Dem candidates has been the most weak on Trump and Trumpism.

Yes, but the pace of mental deterioration is also worsening rapidly. I’ve said before that I don’t see how he can last another year just because he’s visibly falling apart under the stress of failure and narcissistic injury. The real problem is how easily our society became slowly inured to this level of craziness through some kind of process of pathological mithradatism. Every week now something comes to light that would have been unthinkable and devastating to his poll numbers in the beginning, but over time the process of seeing no consequences from scandal after scandal because of GOP co-conspiracy has created a kind of sociological scar tissue to keep just enough people in line. Also, the “both sides” media coverage of this insane bullshit has been abominable.

However, again, the trajectory is so obviously fucking bad now that I don’t see how this can be a long term stable state of play.

I cannot believe Trumpers complain about Biden’s son and think nothing of the fact that Ivanka is always there at formal WH business events. They don’t live in reality. And some of them are in our friend, family, neighbor, and co-worker circle. What I’m wondering is if they’ll ever accept some reality when it comes to Trump.

71
HappyWarrior  Oct 19, 2019 • 6:30:18am

I remember some were arguing before Ukraine came out that maybe the best course of action was to just let the election happen and give the voters a referendum on Trump. I completely rejected that then as I do now more than ever. You don’t impeach Trump and document his abuses of power so Trump gets removed. You do it so down the road a future President can’t see what this administration has done and use the precedents Trump and his administration have created and say that they shouldn’t be impeached over doing the same or similar actions. So in a way, it’s all about Trump’s abuses of power but it’s also about future abuses of power too.

And some of them are in our friend, family, neighbor, and co-worker circle. What I’m wondering is if they’ll ever accept some reality when it comes to Trump.

Pretty amazing how the press acts like the Emoluments Clause doesn’t exist. Only slightly less amazing than watching them fail to note that Trump capped weeks of attacking an opponent’s son for profiting off his dad’s power by giving an 11-figure no-bid contract to his sons.

I can only think that their line of thought (cannot call it logic) is that since Trump was already an established businessman before entering politics, he somehow has licence to continue those activities, whereas the Bidens are not supposed to use their political connections for business purposes because they started out in politics…

Happy Saturday folks, Happy Sunday across the dateline. Los Angeles local news is abuzz about this secret cargo going from Redondo to San Diego.

Less than a day ago, The War Zone reported on a mysterious and very large object related to a “U.S. Navy demonstration program” that was being shipped by Northrop Grumman from the relatively small marine in Redondo Beach to San Diego. Now, as the object is set to be transported via truck to the pier, we know what it is. It is a high-energy laser system that we can say with near certainty is part of the Solid-State Laser Technology Maturation (SSL-TM) program that Northrop Grumman won the contract for in 2015.

re: #166 Shropshire Slasher

She’s not going to upset the primary. Upsetting the primary means she would have to at least poll in double digits somewhere and actually get some primary votes. With the 15% threshold in order to get delegates, Tulsi isn’t going to spend much time getting them. Indeed, the trumpet of doom is about to arrive for all of the single digit candidates. Most of them will ego back to their current political gigs and wait until there’s a nominee to campaign for them in their respective states.

Hawaii is sapphire blue, so no need for even working to get a good turnout for other candidates. Tulsi will soon have to drop out or face nothing but losses in the primary. Tulsi knows this but will pretend she was pushed out by the DNC rather than by Democratic Primary voters. So she’s going independent in order to “have her say”. Clinton has just nipped that in the bud.

A face-to-face confrontation between Hillary Clinton and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard set for next week was averted when Clinton backed out of the Fortune Most Powerful Women Summit in Washington, DC.

Clinton aides cited a scheduling conflict late Friday when she announced her withdrawal from a speaking slot at the annual event. One insider told Slate that Clinton dropped out to protest the inclusion of former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielson on the schedule.

Name recognition doesn’t really matter in a Primary election. Those Democrats who are going to be voting on the nominee already know who she is and have already rejected her as a possible candidate. Remember this is a primary, and primaries have a much more involved electorate, In addition, she isn’t the only person on the ballot, and I suspect way more people care about Warren and Biden than even think about Tulsi.

We also must not forget that she’s deeply involved in a cult where the leader is worshiped as a Hindu avatar. That article from Meanwhile In Hawaii is eye-opening:

I did some further nosing around and found that Gabbard is also involved, at least peripherally, with a pyramid scheme called “QI Group” (has had other names in other countries). There are few things that infuriate me more than out and out pyramid schemes and their little siblings “network marketing”, where it’s claimed you sell a product but recruiting a downline is pushed very hard.

The more I learn about Tulsi, the more I find her to be dangerous.

Probably not very many. Partly I think it would be geography-Hawaii isn’t even on the continent per se, so you don’t even get the personal buzz from acquaintances who have been there and met her. Think about how Obama got a boost from people who went to Illinois and met him and heard him speak, how he was able to travel around the country and people could get to meet him and speak, from the social connections. Tulsi would have to come to the mainland and stay there. The other part is her cultish connections-one thing about that is the kind of gregariousness that leads to outreach is strongly warned against in them. It can be overcome, but you can’t even try to do that until you are an adult, so no high school acquaintances or college buddies. It takes time to throw off the control-and the controlling attitudes.

I’m still concerned about the whole Gabbard/Hillary thing. Not because Gabbard doesn’t deserve the dunking, because fuck that shit, of course she does.

It’s the fact that we’re seeing signs that Hillary animus is once again overwhelming it all and being applied transitively to Dems as a whole, and far from learning the lessons of 2016, the media are tripling down more than ever. And even folks who should know fucking better, like Josh Marshall and others, are deciding to take Tulsi’s side on the matter and scream “how dare she!”s at Hillary. It doesn’t matter that she’s been literally right about every single shit of this, that Trump is even worse than she imagined and even more than half of his supporters are card-carrying deplorables who will not be moved.

Nope, it’s still the mainstream media selling the idea that the only good Dem is a Dem like Gabbard, who literally stands contrary to almost everything the actual Dems are trying to do, who is standing athwart any attempts to hold Trump and the GOP accountable.

And remember, we here, on Twitter, etc. are the junkies, the one who put this stuff in our veins. The rest of the country only hears what the mainstream media is putting out, and with the added bonus of Facebook and Twitter tipping their hands to make it obvious they’re in the tank for the GOP wholesale as well.

Between this, the continued circular firing squad the primaries are inspiring, and the clear attempts to do to everyone in the Dem line what they did to Hillary…I’m fucking terrified right now. Especially when Trump is able to basically just do all his crimes out in the open, and the media refuses to give it more than a day’s worth of coverage long as they have Hillary or someone Hillary-adjacent to boogeyman.

Thing is, on a purely economic standpoint, I’m probably much closer to Sanders than any other candidate. I just have issue with 1) the fact that they’re willing to take such a ‘burn it down’ approach to getting what they want, and 2) the attempt to distill everything down into pure economics while shitting on the very concept of whatever they consider ‘identity politics’. I would love to bring about some kind of leftytopia, but I also know enough that there’s no way to do that within a generation, much less an election cycle, that either won’t result in scorched earth or vast swaths of minorities left brushed aside and ignored.

I at the very least trust AOC, Omar, and others to not shit the bed and refuse to endorse the eventual candidate, but I can’t help but feel like so many others will be wholly content to ratfuck us on the off chance that they can build from the ashes of what’s left after Trump.
