MPs have inflicted a humiliating defeat on Boris Johnson by passing a backbench amendment withholding their support from his Brexit deal.

Instead of giving Johnson their backing for his Brexit deal in a “meaningful vote”, MPs passed an amendment tabled by a cross-party group of MPs led by Oliver Letwin by 322 votes to 306 - a majority of 16.

The prime minister will be legally obliged to request a Brexit delay at 11pm under the terms of the rebel Benn act, after the government lost the critical vote.

Pretty revealing to see which Democratic candidates are defending Tulsi Gabbard.

Here’s what I don’t get: when the Taliban insisted despite all evidence that Bin Laden wasn’t responsible for 9/11, no one had any problem concluding that they were taking Bin Laden’s side. Why does anyone have a problem with applying the same thought process to anyone who insists despite all evidence that Putin wasn’t responsible for stealing DNC material?

Happy Saturday everyone.

This is a pretty cool clip and article on an art exhibit, currently in Minneapolis, “Hearts of Our People”. Rose Simpson rocks. Her recognizing her 1985 El Camino as a “pot” and that “there’s no disconnect between life and art.” really stuck in my head.

Edit: I misread, it was assembled by the Art Institute up in Minneapolis, it’s currently on exhibit in Nashville. oops.

The difference now is that one entire political party is dedicated to the fanatical defense of Donald Trump, and they’re so debased they’ll deliberately blind themselves to the danger.

A day after Rep. Francis Rooney (Fla.) became the first House Republican to say he would consider voting to impeach President Trump, he announced his retirement.

Before running for Congress, Rooney served as president and CEO of one of America’s largest private companies, Rooney Holdings, an investment firm with interests in real estate development, construction, energy and more.

He’s been actively involved in Republican politics, giving millions to candidates and their super PACs. He was a big supporter of the Bush family, serving as ambassador to the Holy See in Rome under President George W. Bush and giving $2 million to Jeb Bush’s super PAC to support the former Florida governor’s failed presidential bid.

“I didn’t take this job to keep it… . I took this job to do the right thing at all times,” he said Friday. “And if that means I got to go find, go back to my other job, that’s okay, too. I like building buildings and drilling oil wells.”

Let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Eric The Fruit Bat  Oct 19, 2019 • 1:45:54pm

William Milliken, the last of the sane GOP and longest serving Governor in the state of Michigan, passed away yesterday at the age of 97.

Just to show you how regressive the GOP is, when Milliken announced that he supported Hillary Clinton, the Traverse City GOP disowned him:

“It’s a political statement. It says nothing about the service of the Governor. He’s done an honorable job in service to the country and the state,” Gillman said. “But this recognizes that his action over time have indicated he’s not a Republican anymore and when he speaks from the bully pulpit and endorses the other side, it’s at the very least, not right. It’s dishonest or he’s confused about what a Republican really is.”

The vote, which came after Gillman’s father — Michael Gillman, a friend and appointee of Milliken — spoke in opposition to the resolution.

“He eloquently spoke, opposing the resolution and talked about inclusion in the party and growing the party and then we took the vote,” Jason Gillman said.

It was 46-33. Milliken is no longer recognized as a Republican, at least not in his home county of Grand Traverse.

The resolution read, in part: “For endorsing Hillary Clinton, a known liar, probable felon, and Democrat for President over the Republican Nominee Donald Trump, we find the political actions and biannual endorsements of those in other parties by this figure of former Republican prominence to be detrimental to our party, its platform, and its candidates. Be it resolved that through a vote of duly elected Republican delegates in the Aug. 11 County Convention, the Former Governor William G Milliken’s status as a Republican be no longer recognized by the Grand Traverse County Republican Party.”

Rats have kind of a bad rap. Yeah, they’re scavengers in big cities and have a long and storied history of spreading disease, but generally speaking, they’re actually pretty lovely creatures. They’re smart, and they make very good pets. That is, unless you have *checks notes* over 300 of them.

As the San Diego Union-Tribune reports, a woman was recently found living in a van in a convenience store parking lot, and she definitely wasn’t alone. What had originally started as just a pair of pet rats exploded into a population of approximately 320. Yikes.

So much of this attitude makes sense if you work under the assumption (as I’ve seen others have) that the biggest pressure on Boris right now is coming from the Tories big-money backers who are scared shitless of EU tax-avoidance laws coming down on their heads next January. An economic downturn is something they can weather because if it gets too hairy, they’ll just unass and head to more favorable locales. But regulators coming for their money hidden in offshore accounts? That’s the sort of thing that keeps them up at night.

Trump does all these off-year rallies for two reasons:

1. He enjoys them. I don’t think I see pictures of him smiling while he’s doing his job, but there’s always a big goofy grin when he’s onstage for his true believers. He can say anything there, and they love him for it.

2. It was reported back in 2015 that Trump has had a longtime Hitler fixation - not necessarily that he admires the man’s deeds, though there’s probably a good analysis to be done on that basis but that he’s done a fair amount of reading and study of him. I strongly suspect that he thinks this sort of rally is what a strong leader does.

And the ideas reinforce each other. “Look at my rallies, aren’t I great?”

They are ugly, and frankly unamerican, but I don’t worry about them directly because they’re such a circle-jerk. I worry that there are places like Fox that cover them uncritically. I worry about that a lot.

re: #103 NetworkKed

Agree with your analysis especially number one. The rallies are the only thing he’s really in control of controlling a narrative. The media won’t bother him with questions or advisers questions his decision. But at his rallies, he’s able to be the man with a message.

Obama didn’t have to be doing rallies all the time

No president pre trump was doing rallies all the time. They did not have time for such stupidity. They did not need to be surrounded by deplorable idiots to make sure they got their due quota of adoring.

He has turned a 2 year election campaign into a 4 year election campaign. Most countries have 408 weeks as their campaign periods and do not spend 89% of their GNP on election costs. It is insane.

What trump wanted - and thought he was getting - was the role of a president, monarch or Governor - in those countries where such roles are head of state only - they do all the fun stuff of meeting people and opening events - but they are not the heads of government where the hard yakka takes place.

trump does not know how to be head of government - he is too dumb & stupid & appointed administrators with the same problems. I hope every last document/digital item is not destroyed. It will be a historian’s unreal experience to write the history of the trump administration.

In the division where I vote the judge of elections told both myself and my neighbor who sits on the board with me to place the voting machines so that he can see the backs of both machines without getting up from his seat. One of the reasons for doing this is that he cannot move around to easily the other is that someone (or several people) could try to tamper with said machines.
