Amazing Quality Video: The Who, Live in the Studio - “Who Are You”

Music • Views: 28,456

As far as I can tell, all of the shots of these guys performing are totally genuine; they were playing and singing all these parts as they were filmed. It’s amazing and a little sad to see Keith Moon in his prime, chaotic and virtuosic at the same time. He was a force of nature.

“A promo film for The Who’s 1978 single ‘Who Are You’ from the album of the same name. Filmed at The Who’s Ramport Studios in Battersea, London on 4 May 1978 by Jeff Stein Stein for inclusion in his documentary The Kids Are Alright.

The Who’s new studio album WHO is released on 6 December 2019. http://thewho.lnk.to/NewAlbumWE

Thugs.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. - At least one person was detained after a protest against President Donald Trump on the Santa Monica Pier turned chaotic when the demonstrators were assaulted by a pro-Trump crowd, authorities said.

Just out of curiosity, what’s your take on Townshend as a guitar player? I don’t know if “divisive” is the right word, but from what I’ve read, it seems to run the gamut between “one of the best ever” to “okay rhythm guitarist who was better at songwriting.”

PSA: If you have a slowish computer and would like to boost your speed, buy a solid state drive to replace your existing hdd. Software exists that will copy the entire contents to the SSD, including the OS, so that the system doesn’t think there’s any difference.

Things just start so fast now in the 12GB i3 my wife bought me last year.

Realistically, if your computer is less than around 3-4 years old, and doesn’t have an SSD, this is the single biggest performance increase you can make.

I’ve always loved Pete Townshend’s guitar playing. Not the best 16th-note shredder, but a guy who found a way to make the guitar talk, and that’s what really matters.

This has always been my favorite video of theirs. One last moment of joy with all of the 4 of them still together and, as Charles notes, really playing together.

I always loved that an afternoon getting drunk with two of the sex pistols and a cop who knew who he was would be memorialized like this.

Must be a slightly different version or something because I’ve loved it for years.

If I can say, I’ve always found him an inspiration. Not as technically flashy as some, often “just” a rhythm guitarist, but as said, he could make it cry and sing when he wanted to. As a late comer to the guitar, I love his guitar work more than ever.

Since its copying the drive, it’s not going to screw with the original. If it doesn’t work, you can just put the original back in.

You will need something to connect the drive to your USB port. Since I have played tech-support for my family, I have one of those kits that allows me to connect any SATA or older drive to my USB by combining the right cables. But they make a simpler straight cable for just SATA drives.

Already screwed up the Linux trying to upgrade to 18LTS. Hate W10, it has no value except that it’s the only thing in the house that will run Civ4, but I’m stuck with it until I install the ssdd and a clean Linux.

It’s also worth checking to see if your computer has an M.2 / PCIe drive slot that was never used. That will give you another massive boost over a SATA connected SSD. My Dad’s old 2013 27inch iMac has one that I’m going to use to upgrade his computer for Christmas. The only annoying drawback is that because of the iMac design this is going to involve a near total teardown. I might just pay my local computer tech to do it for sheer peace of mind and so I’ll have someone else to blame if it gets fucked up.

Careful with this.

The least expensive M2.PCIe drives aren’t really suitable to be OS drives, as they will a) start slowing down massively if they get full, b) degrade under too many Write cycles. The least expensive PCIe drives work great as a repository for your software though, as load times will be nonexistent (and you won’t re-write the software very much).

If you are improving a much older PC, you probably aren’t going to find it worth it to shell out for the top end PCIe drives. Just a thought.

That album gets my vote for greatest live album ever recorded (second place goes to Humble Pie’s Rockin’ the Fillmore). That was The Who at the height of their powers.

What was amazing to me is how small the Leeds Refectory actually was! Listening to the album, it sounds as though the crowd was a great distance from the stage, but it turns out that they just didn’t put any mics out to get the crowd noise.

If you have some time and are willing to have an adventure, try building your own PC.

This used to be a nightmare to try to do in the 90’s - you’d need someone to make sure that your motherboard and processor matched and cases and cables were universally awful. These days, there are sites which will work out the ugly integration details for you and make sure everything is compatible.

I’ve used pcpartpicker.com for several systems. Basically you pick what you want, and it shops it for you from ten or so well-regarded sources. (Notably Amazon. The last system I assembled I got everything there except memory.)

The parts come in the mail, and you assemble them. Easy easy.

If you’ve never assembled a computer before, my advice is to go with something mid-tower size or larger, and to get more power supply wattage than you think you need. The worst headache these days is sorting relative processor speeds - Intel and AMD have completely obfuscated the naming systems - I long for 2002 when basically you’d just compare clock speeds. At least with video cards there aren’t so many top-end options.

What’s the White House staff gonna do when they can no longer hide Trump’s increasingly deteriorating mental state? Stop him from throwing his little rallies? Good luck with that when he’s campaigning for re-election. Prevent him from making his little impromptu pressers near Marine One? Lock him out of his Twitter account? Heh….Trump won’t stand for that, not one iota.

As the stress continues to ratchet up, it’s more likely than not that someday in the not-too-distant future, we’re going to see a massive public meltdown, one so bad that it’ll shake some of his supporters (not the hardcore supporters, mind you - nothing will shake them as they’re basically hopelessly subsumed in a personality cult at this point, the GOP’s answer to the LaRouche movement).

Fortunately for him, being Donald Trump doesn’t require a whole lot of brain power. He goes to some city, babbles incoherently for 1 1/2 hours, Tweets a little, and goes golfing.

Now, actually BEING President, taking the office and the responsibility seriously, THAT takes a lot of brain power. But that’s now how he does it.

Yeah, it’s interesting that after weeks of insisting there was nothing in the phone call that indicated a quid pro quo was being sought, Leningrad Lindsey is now specifying “outside the call.” As a former JAG, you’d think he’d understand that making the request in the call itself is a criminal act.

re: #54 NetworkKed

I had not heard of them. I will need to check them out. Thanks for the tip!

I have been building my own desktops since the 1990’s. In the past 20 years I really do not feel that I have saved much money on any initial build.

It is on the repairs, rebuilds, and upgrades that I can save money, time and aggravation. Particularly when the primary disk fails.

I also like the feeling of confidence that when something craps out, I usually can fix it.

One thing that I did was get a really large tower that allowed me to remove the sides. On previous towers I used to cut up my hands on sharp edges trying to fit in various boards.

I agree with that feeling. That of not surrendering control of one’s fate to to some corporate foisted lowest cost hairball.

Do not know if it is still true, but some companies would solder everything to the motherboard so when something failed, the sucker, er… customer… would have to buy a completely new system.

And often the components could be hinky if used in any way beyond how the original company set them up. So one was completely at the mercy of the vendor.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. It’s another stinker of a day in the Middle East, as US troops are withdrawing from Syria to go to Iraq to fight ISIS, which is resurgent thanks in large part to Trump’s disastrous and impetuous decision to hang the Kurds out to dry and give Turkey what it wants without getting anything in return for our security and safety.

Fighting ISIS in Iraq. Let that sink in. We spent years in Iraq fighting terror groups, losing thousands of troops in the process. We helped the Kurds who shouldered that burden in Syria, and helped contain the threat to the region. Trump pulls the plug, and ISIS breaks out of prisons by the thousands, reengergizing the terror group because Kurds had to choose between protecting prisons against breakout, or Turks engaging in ethnic cleansing.

So, the Kurds are no longer our allies, because Trump threw them under the bus.
We’re back in Iraq. And Turkey and Russia get what they want at no extra cost.

Curious thing though.

Where’s the SOFA with Iraq? What exactly are the rules of engagement there and what protections do our troops have if Iraqis authorities seek to prosecute our troops for acts there? No one seems to know the answer, and no one has asked the question of Trump or Esper or anyone else who should know.

The whole reason the US withdrew from Iraq was over the failure to get a renewed SOFA that absolved liability for our troops there - protected them against local prosecution with our troops subject only to UCMJ action. That timetable was set under GWB and carried out under Obama.

Trump sends our troops into Iraq… but what are the terms and conditions. This seems highly relevant (as is the fact that we now have more troops in the region than when Trump first took office).

Graham of 1999 would have already prosecuted and removed Trump, had Trump been a registered Democrat instead of a Republican.

Graham, applying the same 1999 standards, should be calling for impeachment and removal. But he’s still claiming that there’s some other act that would take him over the edge to consider impeachment of Trump. It’s always just out of reach for Graham. It’s all bulkshit and the measure of Graham is that he’s a typical GOPer who puts party over nation, and the consequences be damned.

Trump is an unindicted coconspirator on federal felonies in the Cohen case. But for DOJ rules, Trump would have been indicted for that.

Trump engaged in widespread obstruction of justice as per Mueller - 10+ instances.

Others in Trumpworld took the 5th (as reported by media this weekend). We should have been given the names of those who took the 5th, and that should have ratcheted up the pressure for impeachment and resignation of those involved because of the criminal misconduct across Trumpworld.

Others around Trump from before the election to now engaged in widespread criminal misconduct, ranging from election fraud and FARA violations to garden variety graft and corruption. Everyone was out to fleece taxpayers, and Trump’s emoluments violations are a constant presence.

What exactly is Graham waiting for? Trump to murder someone on 5th Avenue before finally saying enough is enough?

The principals of the Mossack Fonseca law firm, at the heart of the Panama Papers scandal, attempted to stop Netflix from streaming “The Laundromat,” a fictionalized account of the discovery of the perfidy of the law firm. The federal district court in Connecticut bounced the case, saying it was the wrong venue, and sent it to California.

Neither of the principals, Jurgen Mossack and Ramon Fonseca, have American law degrees. Had they been educated in American law schools, or even done five minutes of research, they would have known that short of nuclear bomb secrets, no court is going to implement a pre-publication ban.

variety.com

I can’t confirm but I believe Mossack and Fonseca are currently under arrest in Panama. They’re accused of being involved in the Lava Jato (Car Wash) scandal that has shaken so many countries in Central and South America and may have been involved in the car bomb murder of Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The law firm, Mossack Fonseca, is out of business, but the movie started streaming on Netflix last Friday.

We need to make sure that happens. And that means making sure that Democrats aren’t distracted by useful idiots like Tulsi, amplifiers like Jill Stein, and purity ponies who claim that they wont support the nominee if it isn’t their chosen one.

I’ve said again and again that what we’re seeing is the creation of the myth of the “Good Republican,” the fanciful image of a Republican politician/voter who was so repulsed by Trump that they wanted him gone in the worst way, but yet there was always a “reason” why they could not do so. And you’re right, they won’t abandon him until the polls show that their own seats are imperiled. But even that will require someone to step forward and be the sacrificial vote, be the one who will take upon themselves willingly the role of lightning rod in order to give the others cover to vote to kick his ass out.

We’re in a post truth world. That’s all I can figure out. It’s why I don’t need to be talked down to like a child and told “Oh we should just try to get along.” There are facts in this world and Trump and his allies in the media and elected government have created a distortion between the truth and lies. Obama literally starts out his administration with double digit unemployment. He cuts that in half and the cultist Trumpists convince themselves that we were in 1933 before Trump came in. Our reputation has never been worse abroad and among our allies. Trump tells them that everyone laughed at us. The military high command is worried about discipline. Trump literally tells us that our guns were out of ammo before he came on. How do you recover from someone like that? I hate to say it but it’s not going to be for a long time and I don’t know the solution.

My frustration is how they just distort. A long time friend of mine called out Trump on everything and some of his friends including some people I’ve known for years said the usual excuses. I pointed out the usual crtiques about Trump. One of them went “Well he’s taken out of context.” A friend of a friend pointed out the infamous pussy grab line and he goes “Well we all have said something like that in private.” Nevermind that he just excuses Trump for “being taken out of context.” Never the hell mind that Trump tried to deny he said it. As I said, it’s a post truth world. They can’t accept they elected the worst individual this country has ever had as PResident.

According to the report, “Trump constantly brags about his properties around the globe when he speaks with foreign leaders in person or by phone, even more than the public instances witnessed out in the open, according to three people familiar with Trump’s conversations with foreign officials. The remarks are permeating every membrane of his presidency so much that they’ve left aides and allies mastering verbal jiu-jitsu to defend his unprecedented approach to fusing personal business interests with his position in high office.”

He’s a salesman at heart. Of course the rallies feed his enormous ego and allows him to “sell” to his heart’s content to a crowd of suckers that’ll buy anything.

Trump’s genius, such as it is, lies in sales and marketing and in fairness, he’s quite good at it. Hell, he sold 40% of Americans on the idea that he’d be the perfect President.

That’s no small feat. And if a good chunk of his supporters had more disposable income, he’d be fleecing them for every last penny.

Angry residents in a Kurdish-controlled Syrian city pelted departing U.S. armored vehicles with potatoes and other refuse, videos on social media show.

The food barrage came amid a controversial troop drawdown that Kurdish leaders say leaves their people exposed to Turkey’s military, but which American supporters of the withdrawal contend is long overdue.

Scenes broadcast by the Kurdish ANHA news agency show potatoes, tomatoes and other rubbish raining down on the hoods and windows of vehicles moving through Qamishli.

Some of the residents there were heard — in English — shouting “No America” and “America liar,” the Associated Press reported. One vehicle was seen backing up over a sidewalk to get away from the crowd.

The bulk of U.S. troops in Syria are in the process of pulling out of the region following orders from President Trump earlier this month. Defense Secretary Mark Esper said some of the forces will be heading to western Iraq, where the American military is set to continue fighting ISIS.

He lives in Sumner, Miss., where the two men who killed Till were tried and acquitted by an all-white jury, only to confess to the killing when they sold their story to Look Magazine months later. Whitten’s father was one of the defense lawyers.

John Whitten was 7 at the time and still sticks with the version of the story he learned back then.

“Fella who came down here and got in trouble — overstepped his bounds to a degree some folks thought,” says Whitten. “And they cured him of his problems.”

I’m sorry, but I’d like to smack the everloving shit out of this privileged white man who never had to worry a day of his life that he would be lynched or murdered because of his skin color. I hope he rots in hell.

ETA: But I’ll stand in line behind the locals, who no doubt have much more reason to smack John Whitten than I do.

re: #204 Belafon

Mississippi Resident here.

Racism still runs DEEP in this state. Jackson isn’t so bad, the Gulf Coast (where I am) isn’t so bad. Neither are Hattiesburg and Starkville (both college towns).

HOWEVER, get out of these areas and go into the smaller towns and you will find plenty of deep red areas full of Confederate flag toting folks who can’t stand black people. I’m talking about areas where it is straight up DANGEROUS for black people to be.

The area where Till was murdered is in one of those areas.

I’m assuming this retired prosecutor is probably older and likely grew up in the pre or early civil rights era. Thus, he would have picked up a lot of the prevailing attitudes back then.

But the reality is that on a lot of levels the class and racial divisions brought to the South as a result of slavery have not healed and may not ever heal (even in an area like where I am, where people of different cultures generally get along, blacks have vastly higher poverty rates than whites and even other minorities).

As here we are, it’s almost 2020 and we’ve having to put make memorials BULLETPROOF to protect them. We really haven’t come as far as we’d like to think we have.

His county never gave Emmett justice. I’m tired of other white people just expecting minorities to let terrible things go. Meanwhile no one ever really has told the South to get over the CSA’s defeat.

I often relate history to my own or familial timeline. I was reading that 14 year old Elijah Cummings, interestingly the same age Emmett was when he was murdered and born the same year as my Dad was beaten up for trying to integrate a swimming pool. There’s a tendency to dismiss all this as old history but I wonder were I a black man not only what sort of things my Grandparents and parents would have experienced but what I would have by now.

Meanwhile, Brexit continues to fester like some kind of plague in a never-ending sci-fi/horror film.

theguardian.com

The logical solution is to pull the plug and revoke Article 50. Sadly, emotion fervor has now overtaken logic and well, here we are.

Johnson will never do that. He knows that if Brexit is put up for a referendum again it will lose. They (him and Farage) will not be able to get away with all the lies they got away with the first time…and the people know that a symbolic vote to leave will create the chaos that has been present since the start.

If they put Brexit up to a second vote, it will lose badly. And Johnson will die first.

A couple of amusing things from various corners on the web.

Apparently making anti-multi level marketing videos and putting them on YouTube is now a thing. I guess there finally got to be a critical mass of people (mostly women) who got tired of being hit up to join any of *dozens* of these outfits. Some of the videos are merely snarky comments on the lengths promoters of these outfits (usually described as “hunbots”) will go to try and snare a new member of their downline. A lot of the videos, though, are more thoughtful, include a lot of research and make a regular point of showing the income statements the FTC requires MLMs to give to distributors. Every single one of these is simply devastating. Most people lose money at this.

Along those same lines, earlier this month, the FTC made a deal with Advocare, an MLM, that it was to basically get out of the MLM business. Advocare, like so many MLMs, had a tiered setup where people further up the pyramid got money from recruits further down the pyramid. The FTC told Advocare they needed to get rid of their tiers.

cbsnews.com

I have NOT seen any comments from any of the many, many other MLMs out there, but I have to wonder if these outfits are running scared, since so many of them put emphasis on recruiting rather than on product sales to customers. I expect some MLMs will subtly change their compensation schemes in response to this Advocare agreement, but it won’t happen overnight.

And from another corner of the web, this asshat named John MacArthur, who runs a church in Simi Valley with an associated “university” called “The Master’s University,” basically trashed a woman, Beth Moore, who makes the rounds in the Evangelical community specifically teaching women.

(just putting this here, seriously don’t watch, it’s 7 minutes 35 seconds of wanting to put your hand through the screen to strangle this pompous jackass.)

Evangelical Christian Twitter, and to a lesser extent, Progressive Protestant Twitter, exploded.

MacArthur’s “university,” “The Master’s University,” is currently on probation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) because the “university” has a poor-to-nonexistent record of reporting campus sexual assaults (oh, and because MacArthur has overwhelming control, there is no faculty freedom, etc.). I’m sure hoping that WASC is keeping an eye on this.

In my previous group, one of the analysts told us during an icebreaker that he loved John MacArthur’s books. I commented in an aside to another coworker, “Oh, I probably shouldn’t tell him that I picketed MacArthur at a convention in Kentucky, right?” Ah, nope.

And sort of a challenge, too - I will never be a bonamassa or an emmanuel etc. but I have no real excuse for not getting my guitar to talk the way I want it to. (I think I need to start keeping a guitar here at work…)

Trump cult followers gloating at the Kurds genocide.

I don’t see Mr. MAGA giving Trump shit for sending troops to Saudi Arabia. If you’re gonna be isolationist, be consistent.

Looking at a lifetime’s worth of insulin for that. If I survived, could never have a single carb again ever, ever, ever.

re: #226 Semper Fi

Meaning pre-diabetes?
1 or 2 pills/day?

Just curious…

Yes, pre, 1 pill a day. It was optional to take it, but I have already cut the starches waaaay down, so figured there wasn’t that much room left in the diet.
