As State Dept. Investigation Clears Hillary Clinton of Wrongdoing, Rachel Maddow Blasts Media for Their Obsession With the Bogus Email Controversy [VIDEO]

Politics • Views: 24,366

Iframe

This week the State Department released the results of their years-long investigation into Hillary Clinton’s handling of her email, and exonerated her of any deliberate wrongdoing.

To many of us, it was incredibly obvious that this story was being blown way out of proportion, but the media — especially the New York Times — engaged in a grotesque feeding frenzy, publishing hundreds of articles insinuating there was something horribly wrong, and playing right into the hands of Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

It was a monumental smear campaign, and instead of exposing it, most of the US media just jumped onboard and helped it spread. And there’s every indication that they’ve learned nothing from this debacle, and will eagerly do the same thing again.

As Maddow says in this clip, “Where do we go to get the last four and a half years back?”

ahhhh, but that’s your current media, working as designed. When some asshats on the SCOTUS determined that News didn’t need a fairness doctrine, when national networks no longer had the responsibility to inform the public on the events of the day and issues for the future, it kind of all went into the shitter didn’t it?

people point to the decline in our morals as being a lack of faith or a turning away from religion and I think it’s more apt to be when the 4th estate, in all of its forms, no longer became driven by the discovery of truth and became beholden to revenue.

Unfair to goats.

True….but it does have a meaning all the same…;)

A goat rodeo is a slang term for something going totally, unbelievably, disastrously wrong, and there’s nothing left to do but to sit back and watch the trainwreck.

In other words, a goat rodeo is a chaotic situation, fiasco, or, more vulgarly, a shitshow. And yes, there are also literal goat rodeos.

Also:

A Goat Rodeo AKA Goat Rope, is about the most polite term used by aviation people (and others in higher risk situations) to describe a scenario that requires about 100 things to go right at once if you intend to walk away from it.

Yes, I first heard the term in aviation.

Every Trumpster parrots “deep state” and “unelected bureaucrat” conspiracy theories. They are all in love with Putin or vocally discount his influence. Supporting Trump is incompatible with being a decent person or loyal American, though I suppose someone could argue that many supporters are brainwashed and ignorant — just like Hitler’s supporters in Germany. Whatever a voter may have thought in 2016, courtesy of the malfeasance of the American MSM and Comey, there is no longer any justification for believing in Trump, except if you are a person with no morals or ethics.

Trump’s response thus far is that he’s being lynched.

It will be upgraded to: Trump being the victim of a final solution conspiracy by globalists (because you know this is how he operates).

The party of personal responsibility rarely takes personal responsibility when they can deflect, dodge, and project on to their rivals/enemies, coupled with IOKIYAR. They’re a blizzard of snowflakes.

This is why I think there will be a real attempt by Barr to open a criminal investigation of whomever the Dem nominee is, and that will provide the excuse Trump needs to ignore a possible EC loss.

It probably wouldn’t be that easy. He can drag things out in courts while his cronies at the state level try to have votes thrown out etc, His goal would be to have the election thrown to the House, which he would win since each delegation gets only one vote.

Basically, we could go to January with both sides claiming victory and no sense of what the outcome could be, and threats of states to ignore the results whichever way it goes.

I’m continuing to see that Taylor’s remarks are a sea change in the impeachment discussion.

We heard that before… but then again, we’re seeing polling show not only solidify behind impeaching Trump, but his removal.

The more information that comes out, the worse it gets for Trump. When you can get Jordan to STFU after testimony by Trump officials that explicitly corroborate the quid pro quo, it makes you perk up a bit.

Because Jordan will spin even the worst stuff as somehow being irrelevant. That he was stunned into silence tells you all you need to know.

Horseshoe theory and that Russian influence campaign targeted across the US political spectrum and hit the resonance frequencies around the following: Stein, Bernie, and Trump in 2016, and they’re intent on doing the same in 2020 with: Stein, Bernie, Tulsi, and Trump.

And we’ve got a media that seems to be down with that and no bother to investigate further. But that we’ve seen Tulsi refuse to reject the support she’s getting from the likes of Duke should make her absolutely toxic. That we’ve seen Bernie give a more spirited defense to Tulsi than he ever did for Clinton also speaks volumes.

As for dragging things out, Bush v Gore showed that there is a significant faction that cannot comprehend getting to Inauguration Day without a winner, whether or not Bush v Gore is used as precedent. To drag things out that long, a lot of judges in a lot of different jurisdictions would have to be skeevy enough to not grant dismissals even when a case is facially absurd. I don’t think that he will still have enough pull by then to get even a fraction of that to occur.

One vote per delegation only applies if no-one won the electoral college. If the Democrats win the House, they can certify the results if the Democrat won the EC. Question will be if Roberts joins the 4 other Rightwing Justices in throwing out the popular vote based on “massive voter fraud”, or if he will recognize that such a judicial coup could result in Civil War.

Meanwhile, across the Atlantic:

Britain’s departure from the European Union was thrown into chaos on Tuesday after parliament rejected Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s extremely tight timetable for ratifying his exit deal.

Ahead of the vote, Johnson had warned parliament that if it defeated him on the timetable and forced a delay until January then he would abandon his attempt to ratify the deal and push for an election instead under the slogan of “Get Brexit Done”.

Johnson was on Saturday forced by opponents into the humiliation of asking the EU for a delay beyond Oct. 31 that he had vowed he would never seek. The European Council president Donald Tusk said he is taking the request seriously.

Lawmakers voted 322 to 308 against the so-called Programme Motion which set out a three-day schedule to rush his deal through the House of Commons.

If the Democrat wins the EC, then all of the EC states declare that person the winner, and it doesn’t matter what the other states do.

The trick is to get those EC vote where you need them.

Remember: The constitution leaves the detail of selecting electors to the states…and state legislatures can overturn an election and just assign their raft of electors. That nasty little tactic was in play during the 2000 election. Jeb Bush and the GOP already had the bill on the floor and ready to go if the recount went against them. They were going to invalidate the whole thing and select electors for Dubya.

And yeah, we would have a massive civil split if it came to that. It would be bad enough that no matter who came out on top, several states might simply declare they do not recognize the president.

It will all suck but would save lives in the long run.

Disloyal Archangel  Oct 22, 2019 • 12:46:34pm

Meanwhile in Israel, President Rivlin is scheduled to grant Blue & White leader Benny Gantz the task of assembling the next coalition government after Netanyahu failed to meet the deadline:

Ynet: Rivlin to pass government mandate to Gantz on Wednesday

President Reuven Rivlin will hand over the mandate for the establishment of the government to Blue and White leader MK Benny Gantz on Wednesday evening, read a statement published by the president’s office on Tuesday.

Director-General of the President’s Residence Harel Tubi held talks on Tuesday with all Knesset factions requesting their position regarding the identity of the candidate to whom the task of forming the government will be given. After receiving the responses of the factions, the president had decided to give the task to the former IDF chief and will officially appoint Gantz on Wednesday at 8PM.

After signing the letter of appointment, Rivlin and Gantz will give statements in the Hall of the President’s Residence in Jerusalem. Gantz, just like Netanyahu, will have a 28-day period to establish a viable government. If Gantz fails to do so, he will also have to relinquish the efforts to form a coalition and return the mandate to President Rivlin.

Regarding that last paragraph, even if Gantz fails and the mandate heads back AGAIN to President Rivlin, it doesn’t mean instant elections. In such a scenario, Rivlin can task ANY Knesset parliament member with assembling a new government - which would likely mean bypassing Netanyahu and granting someone else from his party the task, effectively cutting him out.

Gantz is pushing for a secular unity government, or possibly a short-lived secular minority government with the support of the Arab parties sitting in the opposition. The latter might not last long, but if Israel is going to head to yet another election early next year, a government that lasts even 24 hours would still mean that Netanyahu will NOT be PM heading into that election - and will have absolutely none of the protections that have shielded him from his corruption investigations so far.

Bibi is screwed in any scenario. We’re not at “happy happy joy joy” dancing time just yet, but we’re ever so close…

re: #115 Disloyal Archangel

My understanding is if Ganz fails, and it bounces back to Rivlin, Rivlin has to open it up to any member of Knesset who can then caucus and get to 61. So a back bencher could conceivably end up as Prime Minister if they play their cards right and Ganz fails with his attempt.

Ran across this old movie/play for various reasons today, and the actions of the horrible, abusive mother make a lot of sense - particularly in light of the actions and attitudes of Trump’s base:

The Effect of Gamma Rays 1972

It’s the oldie-but-goodie “The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds,” which is quite a mouthful. About a smalltown loser mother, who failed in life, and therefore hates anyone who looks happy or successful.

At the end of the movie, she kills her daughter’s beloved Peter Rabbit, the shy girl’s only friend, as a way to hurt her daughter for winning a science fair and trying to make something of her life.

This resonated with me. So many of the Trump supporters are the never-was’es - the mean kids from high school, all grown up now, living shitty lives and hating anyone who they perceive to not be as miserable as they are - and determined to MAKE them miserable.

I still think you do the narrative, and the charges/counts can be classified by type, but you can weave a coherent and brief summation of Trump’s impeachable offense that begin before the election to the present.

Common themes throughout - obstruction (reference Mueller’s findings).
The felony crimes of the quid pro quo.
The witness tampering and witness intimidation.
Cohen’s unindicted coconspirator on federal felonies to cover up hush money.

Everything Trump did was to get into office was to completely ignore the law, and then profit from it in every way imaginable, ignoring the Constitution, his oath, and the rule of law in the process.

Nancy waiting for self-impeachment may turn out to be one of her most brilliant moves yet. The Mueller obstruction, especially after Mueller’s less than stellar performance in testifying before Congress, would have been a hard sell, facing a unified Republican party and lack of enthusiasm from red-district Dems, but the Ukraine outrage certainly provided a narrative that everyone can understand.

Maybe Pelosi and McConnell are negotiating behind the scenes on how to remove Trump and replace him with someone acceptable to both parties — which is certainly not Pence.

I agree. In order to make a deal, Trump’s replacement has to be a Republican, preferably someone with no further political ambitions. Too bad the Republicans went so Trump-crazy. Pence fits that role. He’s at both the apex and the end of his political career so he’d be a shoe-in to be a caretaker POTUS until November 2020.

I agree. In order to make a deal, Trump’s replacement has to be a Republican, preferably someone with no further political ambitions. Too bad the Republicans went so Trump-crazy. They could have had a caretaker Weld for a few months while other Republicans ran for Trump’s spot. A caretaker President keeps the lights on while the party rebuilds and recruits.

Pence would also carry on tRumps agenda of vetoing anything that managed to cross his desk that didn’t fit the Republican agenda. Not that anything of import would. McTurtle would see to that.

I still have a bad feeling that it’s a mistake for Democrats to focus solely on the Ukraine scandal when there’s so much other impeachable stuff, but after this Taylor testimony I feel a little bit better about it, because it’s seriously damning.

There are other committees investigating other Trump related issues, but this one really is the easiest for most people to understand. It’s not only simple, but it clears a lot of the “But what about President X” hurdles.

If Pence is out, it’s Pelosi, unless they elect somebody else Speaker*, or she refuses, in which case it’s the President Pro Tempore of the Senate, which right now is Chuck Grassley.

* They should elect Hillary Clinton Speaker, just because.

Will never happen. It’s an evangelical wet dream. Nothing more, nothing less. Two reasons why.

1. Unless he happens to run for POTUS and wins, he would still have to get said legislation passed. The Republicans would have to regain both Houses for that to even have a remote chance of happening.

2. Any E.O. he signed even smacking of such a thing would be immediately challenged in Court and (hopefully) thrown out.

BTW - this may have been posted here, but if not, the Punditocracy is starting to feel that the GOP’s hold on the Senate is getting increasingly tenuous:

Here’s the big picture: If Trump doesn’t win a second term, Democrats need to net only three seats to win back the majority. Assuming they can’t hang onto Sen. Doug Jones’ seat in ruby-red Alabama (but hold Sen. Gary Peters’ seat in traditionally blue Michigan), the magic number is four. And when you add Sen. Cory Gardner’s tough race in Colorado to the toss-up list, they’ve got five promising opportunities to defeat Republican senators.

In a normal political environment, Republicans would have good reason to be confident they could win some of these hotly contested races. But given the trajectory of Trump’s presidency and the trend lines in the battlegrounds, Republicans don’t have much room for error. Right now, control of the Senate past 2020 looks awfully close to a toss-up with over a year until the election.

I’m not sure that we can get back to the situation in early ‘09, when the Democrats had 60 Senators (after the idiotic ratfucking in Minnesota was over), and a filibuster-proof majority … until Ted Kennedy up & croaked and the Massachusetts Democratic party ran a bored, entitled shitshow to lose the seat to a pickup-truck driving yahoo…

All this is necessary, but it would require a 180 degree about face by the GOP as it reforms to undo the last 50 years of its history.

I honestly don’t see how that can happen. The GOP losing House, Senate and the presidency in 400+ electoral vote blowouts for 2-3 cycles in a row would be a sufficient kick in the ass to get the GOP to take reforming itself seriously, but that kind of loss can’t happen these days.

The problem here is that Trump can’t be unique in his ability to focus the GOP’s fascist urges into a corrupternment — every GOP politician out there thinking of the presidency is studying Trump’s filthy winning formula very carefully.

Trump is unique in that the corruption and grift is the actual personal goal. The rest of them have actual policy goals that, whether you agree with them or not, are at least honest. For Trump, policy is just a means to the grift.

The bigger problem for the GOP, though, is that an impeached-and-removed-in-disgrace Trump Is going to cast a long and withering shadow over the Party for quite a while. Donald Trump as a candidate was pretty sui generis, , and it’s probably unlikely that the next wannabe-Fuhrer is going to be able to work the same shtick as Trump (If nothing else than the “I’m a businessman, not a politician wheeze). The centres of power in America have always worked overtime to normalise and excuse white men who abuse power, especially in the pursuit of enriching the rich and keeping other races down. They washed away the sins of the Confederacy, of the robber barons, of Nixon. They absolve everyone around anytime a white man conducts a massacre. They will do the same post Trump too.

I take it you haven’t watched Handmaid’s Tale.

None of it happened through existing Congress or the Courts. It was an armed revolution that killed the existing Congress and Judges (with enough of the conspirators being in the military to prevent sufficient defense), local church-based militias taking over particular cities, etc.

I’m telling you, within two weeks Trump’s support is going to be a not-so-fond memory.

Don’t get your hopes up. Saw this on The Atlantic:

On October 13, President Donald Trump’s average approval sat at 42.2 percent, according to FiveThirtyEight’s average.

Then came an astonishing week, even by the standards of the Trump administration. A procession of diplomats trekked to Capitol Hill, where they outlined a consistent tale of an administration hell-bent on conspiracy theories, extracting quid pro quos from the Ukrainian government, all headed by a president insistent on placing his personal lawyer at the heart of foreign policy. Turkey’s government rampaged through Syria, attacking American allies, while U.S. forces frantically retreated and Iran and Russia celebrated. Meanwhile, Turkey’s president laughed at Trump’s threats.

The acting White House chief of staff acknowledged a quid pro quo with Ukraine and instructed the nation to “get over it.” In its most brazen profiteering so far, the administration announced that the Group of Seven summit would take place at Trump’s own resort. (Both positions were reversed in short order.) ProPublica turned up new evidence of Trump’s financial chicanery.

Many Republicans reacted angrily to Trump’s choices regarding Syria and the G7. Some even began speaking the I-word. Retired Admiral William McRaven, one of the greatest heroes to emerge from America’s 18-year War on Terror, called the president a threat to the republic.

By October 20, Trump’s approval rating had tumbled all the way to … 41.5 percent.

And Nixon never tried to create one either. He knew he never had a chance to get another term, was personally shy, and wanted to just go home. He just wanted to rehabilitate his reputation and wrote a lot of books on foreign policy.

Plus the Republican Party still had a fair amount of chamber of commerce moderates who would not have supported such a thing.

And in Atwood’s words, about the book:

Nations never build apparently radical forms of government on foundations that aren’t there already; thus China replaced a state bureaucracy with a similar state bureaucracy under a different name, the USSR replaced the dreaded imperial secret police with an even more dreaded secret police, and so forth. The deep foundation of the United States—so went my thinking—was not the comparatively recent 18th-century Enlightenment structures of the Republic, with their talk of equality and their separation of Church and State, but the heavy-handed theocracy of 17th-century Puritan New England—with its marked bias against women—which would need only the opportunity of a period of social chaos to reassert itself.

Like the original theocracy, this one would select a few passages from the Bible to justify its actions, and it would lean heavily towards the Old Testament, not towards the New…

I made a rule for myself: I would not include anything that human beings had not already done in some other place or time, or for which the technology did not already exist…all had precedents, and many of these were to be found, not in other cultures and religions, but within Western society, and within the “Christian” tradition itself…

I needn’t have worried. He doesn’t have it in him. Every single time, within no more than 2 days, he’d do something stupid and all the talk of a pivot would go away.

What about a Supreme Court that not only overturns Roe v Wade but one that outlaws abortion nationwide? One that takes the 14th Amendment and declares that a fetus is a person from inception? I am not sure there are 5 votes for that on the current court but who knows what Federalist Society judges may support. Certainly the states that have passed draconian anti-abortion laws favor that policy. And a Mike Pence would eagerly nominate judges who endorse these rules.

Addendum: Don’t watch Trump’s approval rating, that’s not going to mean much at the end of the day.

Watch the number of those who support impeachment and removal. Notice it’s gone up around 12 points since the spring?

Chris Hayes pointed out recently that the impeachment polling and approval polling have almost locked up. Like there doesn’t seem to be any split between impeachment/disapproval at this point.

re: #277 Hecuba’s daughter

What about a Supreme Court that not only overturns Roe v Wade but one that outlaws abortion nationwide? One that takes the 14th Amendment and declares that a fetus is a person from inception? I am not sure there are 5 votes for that on the current court but who knows what Federalist Society judges may support. Certainly the states that have passed draconian anti-abortion laws favor that policy. And a Mike Pence would eagerly nominate judges who endorse these rules.

Maybe I’m naive on this point, but even going back to my FedSoc days, I’ve never thought that they’d pull the trigger on that interpretation. I think, at the end of the day, if they were to get their way, it’ll end up being a “constitutional right in name only” - they’ll simply refuse to call anything an undue burden and continue to curtail access without ever actually saying it’s not a constitutional right (in part because I’m not sure they want to create a legal precedent establishing an argument to undo constitutional rights).

IMO that all depends on how far the know-nothing rot of the US right extends into the Heritage Foundation judge list. My assumption is that every year’s crop of hard-right judges is substantially worse than last year, because what’s going to stop them?

The clever thing to do on abortion rights from a hard-right perspective is to continue the death of a thousand cuts Justice Kennedy was subjecting it to.

But the GOP base will not be satisfied with that, and Republicans all over the country are sending up test cases to SCOTUS seeking a repeal of Roe. Who wants to be the right wing justice that will be branded a ‘traitor’ by millions for letting Roe stand when the right had the votes to overturn it?

Although Paul, at least, had a recognizable ideology, I’m not sure Gabbard does.

There’s still enough insulation with respect to the judiciary that most probably really won’t care that they’ve been branded a traitor. That’s the power of a life time appointment and a very nice salary. They might eventually write a memoir or book on the law and it’ll be a bestseller.

Ironically, that is not how Trump the businessman operated; he invoked lawyers to chisel down the dollar owed to pennies:

Wow. From Bill Taylor’s statement: “Ambassador Sondland tried to explain to me that President Trump is a businessman. When a businessman is about to sign a check to someone who owes him something, he said, the businessman asks that person to pay up before signing the check.”

Republicans Are the Party of the Wealthy Elite
by Nancy LeTourneau October 22, 2019

Frankly, I’m not interested in hearing from people who suggest that the Democratic Party doesn’t pay enough attention to the pocketbook issues faced by most Americans. Regardless of the fact that they have adopted different strategies, you would be hard-pressed to find a Democrat who wasn’t in favor of:

Providing more affordable access to health care,
Raising the minimum wage,
Expanding living wage jobs via investments in infrastructure and sustainable energy,
Making college more affordable,
Expanding access to child care and pre-K, and
Protecting and strengthening Social Security.
The other thing Democrats agree about is that, in order to address those issues, we need a progressive tax system in which the wealthy pay their fair share

By way of contrast, Republicans—including Donald Trump—are opposed to all of the above. For decades now, the GOP has been lying to middle class American by pretending to be their champion, while attempting to paint Democrats as the party of the elite. That is a lie and anyone on the left who promotes it should be called out.

Good essay.

The reason is these people are so used to operating private fiefdoms where they surrounded themselves with yes men and co-conspirators. They have no practical experience working with career subject matter experts and professional bureaucrats in government, so it doesn’t occur to them how much of a paper trail they’ve helped create and how much actual evidence can be weaponized against them.

A lidar project wants to document the entire planet, before everything changes.

Lidar (light detection and ranging) “is a way to generate images of the ground using laser pulses from a plane, which measure the ground elevation below by tracking the time it takes the pulses to return. I remember seeing the names on the reunion committee from our high school, and basically all the jocks had married the cheerleaders.

… and then a few years later, they tended to get divorced.

Ran into a bunch of them back at my 20th reunion. Faces were kinda slack & bloated and they had this uncomprehending look in their eyes, as they realized that the kids who actually paid attention in class were driving *much* nicer cars and wearing decent suits.
