Some asshat got upset because NPR used “person” instead of “woman” to refer to a person who menstruates in a story about the tampon tax. I proceeded to give this likely MAN an education.

The Daily Beast has a piece on a film coming out, Citizen K, that chronicles the rise of Putin, and serves as a warning for what we’re facing:

One of America’s leading documentary-makers set off on a project to examine the extraordinary life of Russian dissident Mikhail Khodorkovsky, and came away with the discomforting realization that President Trump is morphing into Vladimir Putin.

Alex Gibney’s Citizen K traces Putin’s evolution from political newbie to uncompromising autocrat whose ability to harness the power of TV allowed him to gain total control over a democratic state. […]

Also a condiment.

CHICAGO—Though once defined as just a stand-alone meal, meat has risen quickly up the ranks to become the nation’s second most popular condiment, according to a study released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

“In the past several years, meat’s use as a way to enhance the flavor of foods has increased exponentially,” said Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns. “Ketchup is still number one, but at the rate people are putting meat on top of other meats and foods, it may very well surpass it by 2010.”

“American consumption habits have made meat a necessity just so people can notice that they’re eating something,” Johanns added.

It’s about NPR being inclusive because some transgender men still menstruate. And of course, transgender men do not exist. But to me the whole freaking POINT is that period products are EXPENSIVE and then taxed on top of that. I still remember my mother telling me how grateful I should be for pads (which in the 1970s were truly sucktastic) because when she was a teenager living with her grandmother, she had to use rags and boil them every period!

That’s why I love people like Arunachalam Muruganantham, an Indian guy people thought was SO WEIRD for trying to figure out how to make menstrual pads cheaply. He figured out what pads were made of, how to source the raw material, how to make a machine that could be operated by local cooperatives of women who could then sell the pads for a much lower price than the international brands.

And that is why I’m completely militant about how our government needs to do better for poor women and girls, as well as incarcerated women. It shocks me to find out that there are girls who don’t have period product and who stay home from school as a result, not just in India and third world countries, but here in the land of the free. It pisses me off that incarcerated women are only given a scant number of pads for their periods, and then have to buy more if they want more. Then they get yelled at or worse if they bleed on their prison uniforms.

So this asshat having a hissy because NPR was including transgender men by using the word “people,” well fuck him. It’s not about him and his petty bullshit.

/end of rant.

Yeah, but it won’t be PG&E’s fault. See, they’re making us safe, even as they deeply, deeply regret any inconvenience. Making us choke on all that safety is way easier than spending money on infrastructure and clearing trees away from lines, and leaves the money available to give themselves bonuses.

And that’s all it really is, a way for PG&E’s lawyers to argue in any civil suits that future fires couldn’t possibly be their fault because their equipment was shut down at the time. The cherry atop this shit sundae is their announcement the other day that they foresee these blackouts becoming “necessary” during fire season for the next decade.

(And fuck anyone who doesn’t get what a big deal menstruation is. I spent my entire life having exceptionally bad, heavy, horrible, painful periods [really bad car accident at 16 affected me “down there”] and I was on depoprovera from my mid 20’s on to stop menstruation completely. I always worked so $25+ a month for female products wasn’t a big deal, but when you’re poor and have a daughter or two, it’s a really BFD.)

And what, may I ask, will be changing 10 years from now? I suppose the current board of directors will have retired and it’s someone else’s problem.
They’re supposed to be working on bringing infrastructure up to speed but they only got about 1/3 of their goal for this year done. Because, why bother?

When this was first announced I thought about two things, people who need powered medical devices to survive, and people with lots of money invested in aquarium set ups. I can definitely get by without the CPAP for a few nights, especially now that I’ve lost so much weight and gotten in shape, but there are loads of older folks with far more serious conditions who need constant power for shit like oxygen concentrators who’d be fucked and likely don’t have a week worth of backup power available.

Then there are aquarium owners. I installed a 12 volt 100 amp hour deep cycle battery backup for Dad’s aquarium but I doubt it would last a day (prolly not even half a day since the return pump runs off it via a voltage doubler) in limp along mode. Forget about the freezer and fridge. Add to that, red flag weather is necessarily hot and dry, some people in frail health really need the air conditioning in that weather. So a real, robust battery power backup setup to deal with the worst case contingencies could easily run into the tens of thousands of dollars. Gas generators solutions would be cheaper, but they’re also more dangerous fire wise, noisy, polluting, and therefore not a viable option for a lot of people like condo dwellers.

re: #53 goddamnedfrank

Absolutely! I am not exactly frail, but my a/c went out when the weather was about 90, and the house got up to 86. I survived, but a day later collapsed and was in the hospital. That was just after a couple of hours, with electric fans working! If the power was out for 12 hours, and I didn’t have a dear friend who could locate and replace the starting capacitor at night, I might have died. Shook me to how fragile life is!

I installed a 12 volt 100 amp hour deep cycle battery backup for Dad’s aquarium but I doubt it would last a day in limp along mode.

My son-in-law bought a propane powered generator a few months ago because they have aquariums and also to power the fridge and freezer. He got major props from my daughter a couple weeks ago when their power got turned off for 21 hours.
Obviously this isn’t a solution for everyone.
So far we’ve lucked out on the power cuts, but there are no guarantees. I’m of 2 minds about the generator thing for us.

I really like the Tesla Powerwall but it really only makes financial sense in an off grid application where you’re experiencing lots of discharge cycles. Even then it’s fucking expensive. A DIY electrician could just rig up their own with aftermarket lithium ion cells. For on grid reliable but rarely used backup lots I’d probably go with a ton of lead acid batteries and rig up an automatic isolation switch, charger & inverter, but that assumes there’s a handy & safe space to store that shit.

Trump really is Reagan on meth.

I think The Dollop’s best and most appalling episode is #356 The Resnicks: Water Monsters.

It’s the story of the vile couple who control way too much of California’s water. And that’s just a part of their evil.

One thing which is really not emphasized at all, at least it wasn’t in my experience of secondary school education, is how much the entire Viking conflict was about religion.

Alfred became “Great” exactly because he won a religious war. A conflict between western (Catholic) Christianity and Norse paganism (strictly i suppose more properly polytheism.)

A MURDER investigation is underway after 39 bodies were found inside a lorry container - including one teenage body.

Emergency services rushed to Waterglade Industrial Park, Eastern Avenue, Grays, at roughly 1.40 am this morning.

Emergency services arrived but 39 people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Early indications suggest 38 are adults and one aged in their teens.

A 25-year-old-man from Northern Ireland has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

According to Chief Superintendent Andrew Mariner,

“We believe the lorry is from Bulgaria and entered the country at Holyhead on Saturday 19 October and we are working closely with our partners to investigate.

“We have arrested the lorry driver in connection with the incident who remains in police custody as our enquiries continue.”

No problem. America has your back against the Deep State! We hate the Deep State!!

A modern government needs trained professionals and specialists to run it efficiently.

These professionals have careers that extend past the tenure of any one President, and they have to consider their tasks over the long term and not just just in the light of a single Presidency.

That is not Deep State, that is just responsible governance.

But Trump supporters do not want responsible governance, they want Trump.

Never really cared much for tofu. Something about the consistency that just turns me off.
That said, it does readily pick up the flavoring of whatever it’s cooked with.

tofu comes in various consistencies, from firm to silky. Depends on what you are using it for.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Treasonweasels in Trumpworld continue to lie and obfuscate and crime, and the GOP continues supporting it. The Freedumb caucus throws its support behind Trump, because that’s the bigot brigade base. They got elected on white power grievances - that their power was being diminished because everyone else was finally getting the rights that white guys had all along.

But something is indeed changing. Trump’s support is down to 38%, and that’s scraping the floor. If there’s a breakthrough in that level of support, Trump is going to see the GOP abandon him because they’ll put their own reelection efforts above being complicit in Trump’s protection from being impeached despite openly admitting to felony acts.

As it is, we’re on the cusp of a majority of Americans who not only want Trump impeached, but removed from office. Taylor’s testimony undercuts Trumpworld’s line, and when you have asshats like Hewitt trying to joke about quid pro quo, you know you’re sunk.

Taylor’s testimony confirms what we’ve already heard Trump explicitly state (and what Mulvaney explicitly said) - that there was a quid pro quo to demand investigation into Democrats and Biden or else the US holds back military aid. And they were going to continue to hold back the aid unless Trump got what he wanted. It was all done outside the usual chain of command, with Trump running a rogue op via Rudy.

Pompeo is now eyeballs deep in the weeds, and if he takes Trump’s line in this, then career diplomats across the world know that they don’t have anyone having their back, and that Trump will undercut what they do on a daily basis if it means Trump can personally benefit.

Trump is sabotaging our foreign policy to enhance his own political power and enrich himself, just as surely as he’s damaging our military policy and undermining our long term strategic and tactical allies around the world. Who benefits from all these actions? It’s not the US. Russia certainly benefits from the chaos. Trump is their consensus pick. But Russia will continue to prop up others to sow as much chaos as possible to keep their rivals off balance.

There are literally a thousand scandals going on. Not just one defines this presidency. So far, not one phrase is really representative of how deep and wide the corruption is. but the impeachment is likely to be focused on just a few things.

THAT’S their defense? That it’s ok to engage in a conspiracy to have Ukraine investigate your political rival because Ukraine didn’t know the admin was trying to blackmail them? Yikes.

What’s even better is that this all stems from what even fucking Yahoo! News dubbed an “absurd conspiracy theory” that Trump fervently believes in.

It’s the conspiracy theory that could bring down a presidency: the idea that an old Democratic National Committee email server is hidden somewhere in Ukraine and could rewrite the history of the 2016 election.

If it does lead to President Trump’s impeachment, it will be because he believed it.

“There was a server, the DNC server, that had never went to the FBI — the FBI didn’t take it,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News. “It was taken by somebody, I guess it’s CrowdStrike, that’s what I have heard.”

Trump pushed the same line last week in the Oval Office, stating, “For instance, I still ask the FBI, ‘Where is the server?’ How come the FBI never got the server from the DNC? Where is the server? I want to see the server.”

There is no DNC server. CrowdStrike is a cybersecurity firm that investigated the 2016 hack into DNC emails and turned its findings over to the FBI. Trump brought up CrowdStrike and the server in a July call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. In the memo about the call released by the White House, Trump said, “I would like you to find out what happened with this whole situation with Ukraine, they say CrowdStrike,” followed by an ellipsis, followed by “The server, they say Ukraine has it.”

Trump and his fellow conspiracy theorists on the right believe that the server would contain evidence proving that Russia wasn’t responsible for the hack. (CrowdStrike found that Russia was responsible, as did special counsel Robert Mueller.) The impeachment inquiry was sparked by a whistleblower complaint about the president’s attempt to pressure Ukraine into pursuing his theory about the server and investigating former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.

The keyword here is Catholic and brown skinned. The ancestors of those Fundamentalist assholes are the same ones that got the quotas that nearly prevented my mom’s grandmother from being able to come to this country in the first place. It is so angering to me to see descendants of those people like my mom’s cousin embrace the same nativism.

July 2018:

More and more people seem to be having trouble with this whole cause———>effect thing. Perhaps they see it as elitist.

Racist Ohio Driver Says Viral Video of Him Calling Black Man a N***er Ruined His Life

Jeff Whitman drove two miles out of his way to follow a black man to his house and call him a “n***er” in a now-viral racist tirade caught on video. The consequences for his racism were immediate.

Last week, Whitman — owner and operator of Uriah’s Heating, Cooling, and Refrigeration — made the news for taking his road rage way too far. Charles Lovett, who lives in Columbus, recorded Whitman on his phone when the latter arrived outside of Lovett’s house in his company truck, angry that Lovett didn’t allow him to go straight in a right-turn-only lane.

The epically stupid Mr. Whitman was easy to identify because his truck had his business’s name, address, and phone number painted right on the side.

An interesting take on Taylor’s testimony yesterday: That Ukraine would give, but Trump wouldn’t actually return the offer:

After the call with Ambassador Sondland on September, I expressed my strong reservations in a text message to Ambassador Sondland, stating that my nightmare is they the Ukrainians give the interview and don’t get the security assistance. The Russians love it. (And I quit.).” I was serious.

Trump was extorting Ukraine. Trump was shaking down Zelinski. Demanding the dirt on Biden. Demanding phony investigations. Demanding public statements from Zelinski. Extorting a country at war by holding up aid ostensibly until his demands were met.

But, Bill Taylor did not believe Trump was ever going to provide the security assistance. Trump, he realizes is doing Putin’s bidding and Putin wants Ukraine squashed. Trump had no intention of ever releasing the money. That’s why Trump wanted the public statement.

The 1,000 US troops leaving Syria will be allowed to stay in Iraq for at most four weeks, Iraq’s defense minister said Wednesday, in an embarrassing rebuff to President Donald Trump’s plans for withdrawing from Syria.

Najah al-Shammari’s comments to the Associated Press came shortly after his meeting with US Defense Secretary Mark Esper, who went to Baghdad to negotiate the redeployment of US troops in Iraq after they withdrew from Syria.

The emergency meeting came after Esper announced on Monday that the American troops would be stationed along the Iraq-Syria border.

The announcement was seemingly made without bringing Iraq on board first, as the Iraqi government said hours later that the US had not secured permission to do so.

Esper said at the time that US troops would help secure oil fields and monitor activity of the Islamic State terrorist group from Iraq.

Influencers have been swarming the gritty stairway from DC blockbuster “Joker” — but back in the day, even locals did their best to avoid the seedy Bronx steps, according to one of its most famous natives.

“When I was growing up, everyone would tell us to stay away from those steps or go with a friend,” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez told TMZ Tuesday on Capitol Hill.

The stairs, which run along West 167th Street, are listed as 1165 Shakespeare Ave. on Instagram. Users have been flooding the app in recent days with photos of their takes on the Joker’s strange romp on them.

They’ve rapidly become so iconic, Google Maps has changed the spot’s name to “Joker Stairs” — much to the chagrin of locals. AOC now counts herself among those critical of The Bronx’s recent tourism surge.

“The Bronx is much safer now and I’m happy to say that,” AOC says. But she’d be happier if the tourists didn’t take their selfie sticks to her home borough. “I think the way a lot of us feel is, listen, like, keep your Instagram posts outside of the Boogie Down. Like, this is for us.”

But in fact, word of the aid freeze had gotten to high-level Ukrainian officials by the first week in August.

My mom works at a facility where you’re not allowed to have your cell phone in. If she had did what Gaetz and his friends did, she would be in deep shit. Gaetz? He’s probably going to get his victim complex on FNC tonight crying about how unfair it all is.

Random UFO cultists are smarter than Republican Congressmen. At least the “Storm Area 51” mob had sense enough sense to back off when the facts were made clear.

NO SMOCKING GUN!  Oct 23, 2019 • 10:24:25am

I don’t understand why the SCIF doesn’t have doors that lock if its supposed to be secure. Anyway at lunch time I checked Fox News for a minute to find out whats happening on Earth-2. Turns out the Ukraine Investigation is just a distraction from Russia, because the Democrats are terrified of the bombshell revelations coming on the origins of the Russia investigation! I kid you not, that is literally what was said on a show called Outnumbered.

You should let them know. They have a major security issue when your can’t view URLs in email before opening them.

They told me to look at the sender’s email address. I was like WHAT!? That goes against all of our training. They didn’t care.
