Ben Folds, one of my most favorite “occasional Nashvillians” (as many musicians that work outside of country music tend to be that live here, such as Peter Frampton); he was the driving force that kept RCA Studio A (which he leased and sublet parts of to other musicians for years) from getting demolished and replaced by another glass-and-metal residential tower like those that have completely changed the Music Row/Gulch area in recent years.

He may have voted for Bernie last time, but I’m not necessarily going to hold a grudge against him for that… ;-P

Yeah, and it did fuck all. If I take this laptop to some place with a public wifi I need to reboot into safe mode to get the captive portal to load. Command + Space Spotlight searches don’t work on external disks, and today Safari just fucking forgot how to load Twitter until I did another reboot.

Ever since I updated to Catalina have had problems with Time Machine. Every day it updates at least 10 GB and it takes an hour to prepare before starting to backup very, very slow!

Off to Alpine tomorrow. We are getting the neighborhood band back together for the annual Big Bend reunion. Couple of gigs in dive bars, and enjoying one of the blackest skies in the US. New moon, so even better.

Just a quick heads-up to an L.A. Lizards:

Los Angeles County health officials are warning the public about another case of measles involving a person who visited Disneyland last week.

The person visited Disneyland on Oct. 16, between 9:15 a.m. to 8:35 p.m., and a Los Angeles Starbucks location at 3006 S. Sepulveda Blvd. between 7:50 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to a news release from the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Anyone who was in those areas at that time may be at risk of developing measles, with symptoms appearing up to 21 days after the exposure.

There are whole categories of attempted crime-murder, rape, other forms of mayhem. The idea is that you shouldn’t even try to commit them. Kevin Costner?) where the President was trying to rape a girl, she grabbed a letter opener and stabbed him to protect herself, and the Secret Service shoots her. So, this is a completely ignorant take courtesy of the NY Post op ed. I feel dumber just thinking about this, but it needs to be fisked anyways Eco madness is behind the 737 MAX debacle, but no one is talking about it.

There’s a reason no one is talking about it.

It’s sheer dumbfuckery.

Boeing has sought to keep the same airframe in play since there’s huge costs in building new plane from scratch. They thought they could get FAA and authorities to sign off on stretched version of the 737, which has new more efficient engines that cost less to operate than the prior generation of 737.

It’s about operational cost savings, not the environment. Boeing can claim that the plane reduces emissions, because that’s absolutely true. The engines burn less, pollute less, and deliver more power and can haul more people than the prior engine/plane combination.

But the crash happened because Boeing hid that key mechanisms changed and that the computers would take over and fight the pilot over key decisions under certain circumstances, and drive the plane into the ground.

There is nothing about the environment involved here except the toxic culture at Boeing that skirted the rules, and the lax oversight at the FAA as a result of Reagan (and forward) handing over significant oversight to the very manufacturers who build the planes.

Every last one of their electronic devices need to be accounted for and scanned for malware that could enable our rivals and enemies access to our most important classified info and methods.

i dont think they’ve included sitting congressmen in their arguments.

There’s a reason no one is talking about it.

It’s sheer dumbfuckery.

Boeing has sought to keep the same airframe in play since there’s huge costs in building new plane from scratch. They thought they could get FAA and authorities to sign off on stretched version of the 737, which has new more efficient engines that cost less to operate than the prior generation of 737.

It’s about operational cost savings, not the environment. Boeing can claim that the plane reduces emissions, because that’s absolutely true. The engines burn less, pollute less, and deliver more power and can haul more people than the prior engine/plane combination.

But the crash happened because Boeing hid that key mechanisms changed and that the computers would take over and fight the pilot over key decisions under certain circumstances, and drive the plane into the ground.

There is nothing about the environment involved here except the toxic culture at Boeing that skirted the rules, and the lax oversight at the FAA as a result of Reagan (and forward) handing over significant oversight to the very manufacturers who build the planes.

My understanding from reading around is that it’s actually worse than that. The new engines on the 737 Max are more powerful and more efficient, but they’re also larger and require pylons that have been shortened and pushed further forward of the wing than on a stock 737. This had the result of pushing the aircraft’s aerodynamic center forward, which leaves it much more likely to stall in event too much power is applied. Boeing’s solution? Put in a “middle man” computer that senses the aircraft is in a stall and bypasses pilot input to force the nose down.

With the new design finished, they then exploited loopholes in FAA regs that allow manufacturers to self-certify to say that their engineers had signed off on the mods so that they could push the plane into production as an “upgrade” to an existing model rather than a whole new aircraft that needed proper testing and certification. And then sold them to airlines as “upgrades” that pilots experienced with existing 737 models could type-certify on with a few hours in a simulator. Pilots are alleging that Boeing gave them no instruction on the new anti-stall system and buried all mention of it in the manuals, while Boeing (in full CYA mode) is claiming the pilots were trained in how to deactivate the system in an emergency. Note the keywords “in an emergency,” which generally in industry speak means “at normal flight altitudes, in normal conditions, with no other problems going on at the time.” No instruction was given on what to do when you’re climbing after take-off and the system decides (due to faulty data) that you’re actually in a stall and bypasses all controls so it can augur the nose into the ground.

Surprise, surprise, relying upon companies to police themselves doesn’t work.

The infamous 1973 DOJ rules apply only to the office of the President and not to any other government official.

There is nothing wrong with attending evening classes, expanding one’s qualifications, etc., especially when you are young, but one should not be punished with poverty for not doing it.

People also have families to raise on those evenings…

Not too mention working non-stop WITHOUT breaks will destroy your productivity and make you a tired, aggravated, miserable person.

That’s why it’s called work-life BALANCE.

I’ve been working on creating a board game in my spare time. Some nights what I do, is I come home from work, eat dinner, spend a few hours working on the game and then watch TV or play video games for awhile before I go to bed.

Some nights I put some extra time in on the game. Some nights none at all.

There is more to life than fucking working yourself to death. This is so unique to American culture. Other countries have rest periods mandated BY LAW. Here, there are some states where an employer doesn’t even have to give you ANY BREAKS AT ALL if they don’t want to.

We’re human being, not fucking slaves. We deserve down time.

It was less devastating because it was a second term. Once the re-election happened, things probably started to go on some autopilot waiting for the next guy. He seems less arrogant and divisive than Trump, too. And we were fortunate to have good people who could keep things going with no desire to overturn and wreck everything.

While I don’t regret the retirement at all-more time to write, and I feel much better, the buyout that helped enable me to retire has created as you can see, a little problem with Social Security. I’m going to be reimbursed, but whatever happens is going to take about a month, and I can do is wait. I know I’m asking a lot, but thanks to your generosity, I’ve been able to pay my condo fee and a student loan as well. Plus I hope to do some dental work as well.

It explains the weird guilt I’m feeling about being retired. After years of precariousness, I finally have some stability. But I’m not hustling, and don’t need to anymore. No more going to unemployment looking for jobs that paid less than my seasonal job anymore. No looking for even temporary jobs anymore. I can sit at home now, write and rest. Instead of going through the off-and on tango, It’s every month for the rest of my life now.
A non-Calvinist self could say, I earned it, and probably paid more in taxes (sales and otherwise), than I will ever draw out.

I’ve seen elsewhere that Buttigieg pretended the tea party wasn’t just Republicans in 2010, but I haven’t been able to get a good source. If that’s true, then I’m done with him.

By 2010, it was completely clear what the tea party was — racist Republicans letting their freak flags fly.

Pete Buttigieg’s model supreme court justice is a guy who was appointed by Reagan, consistently worked to gut workers’ rights & voting rights, and resigned to allow Donald Trump to appoint Kavanaugh.
