Drudge is surprising me the most, I wouldn’t be shocked if he is turning more wingnuts than all mainstream media combined.

Trump’s silence on his treatment from Drudge is interesting too, wonder how long that will last?

Ben Folds, one of my most favorite “occasional Nashvillians” (as many musicians that work outside of country music tend to be that live here, such as Peter Frampton); he was the driving force that kept RCA Studio A (which he leased and sublet parts of to other musicians for years) from getting demolished and replaced by another glass-and-metal residential tower like those that have completely changed the Music Row/Gulch area in recent years.

He may have voted for Bernie last time, but I’m not necessarily going to hold a grudge against him for that… ;-P

Not sure whether that is true, but the whistleblower’s testimony probably can’t add to the testimony already received. No reason to force them out of anonymity.

And, after what happened today at the HPSCI SCIF with Gaetz’s Charge of the Blight Brigade mob, combined with Trump’s wanting the whistleblower hung, I can see and totally understand why if the whistleblower no longer wants to testify.

I can’t help but feel that Trump, Gaetz, and the GOP thugs successfully intimidated them.

There is no need for the whistleblower to testify. They had no first hand knowledge of any of the actions they reported. It was those who were actually involved who needed to be interrogated.

These are arguments made by ‘lawyers’ who believe the only thing that matters in any politically relevant court case is the partisan affiliation of the ‘judges’.

That’s what Maddow inferred from their argument, but no that was not explicitly asked or stated. I’d argue that stopping a crime spree in process is not the same thing as investigating and that she was being too clever by half.

The other side can lie at will, and the good guys have to argue with mathematical precision or be hen-pecked by fact checkers. It’s true that Maddow screwed up here, but it’s also true that the rules of the game are deeply, profoundly unfair.

re: #72 The Pie Overlord!

Why of course this headline is from the NY Times, did you think it was from Breitbart or something?

Apart from the occasional column by Marc Thiessen, I’m still pretty happy to subscribe to the WaPo. I like this headline from today that gives Betsy DeVos the respect she deserves:

Betsy DeVos blasts ‘Tinseltown’ for ignoring a movie she likes and calls her critics ‘bullies’

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Wednesday used a speech marking the 15th anniversary of a school voucher program to blast Hollywood for not supporting a movie she likes. She also used a new term for her critics: “bullies.”

DeVos appeared at a celebration of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, the only federally funded school voucher program in the country. It uses public money to provide subsidies to more than 1,000 low-income families to help pay for tuition at private and religious schools.

She also attacked Hollywood for failing to show interest in a new film called “Miss Virginia,” which tells the story of Virginia Walden Ford, a prominent black D.C. activist who fought for vouchers in the late 1990s and 2000s so her son could go to a private school. As Washington Post reporter Perry Stein wrote, the movie’s villain is a fictitious D.C. congresswoman who appeared to be based on Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D), a longtime opponent of vouchers.

The film was produced not by a well-known Hollywood moviemaker but by Moving Picture Institute, which is financially backed by the Mercer Family Foundation, a major donor to Republicans, according to foundation tax filings. It was released this month and shown in about a dozen theaters across the country, Stein reported, and is available on iTunes and video on demand.

Yeah, no, that’s not going to work. Why? Because the internet is forever and there is a wealth of evidence, from videos to text, of Republicans making all sorts of excuses why Bill Clinton deserved to be booted from office even if Americans felt he’d committed no crime. It was about “cleansing the office,” according to Leningrad Lindsey.

Trump insane? The truly insane is the Republican posse, led today by Matt Gaetz, who tried to derail the closed door hearing because of their devotion to Trump. The truly insane are the tens of millions of Americans (remember , he still has 41% support) who idealize him and support him wholeheartedly, who think he is a real billionaire and brilliant negotiator, and who actually believe him. The truly insane are those who say on FB that they don’t care about Trump’s wealth or financial management only that he is not a career politician getting rich on government wages.

Just a quick heads-up to an L.A. Lizards:

Los Angeles County health officials are warning the public about another case of measles involving a person who visited Disneyland last week.

The person visited Disneyland on Oct. 16, between 9:15 a.m. to 8:35 p.m., and a Los Angeles Starbucks location at 3006 S. Sepulveda Blvd. between 7:50 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to a news release from the L.A. County Department of Public Health.

Anyone who was in those areas at that time may be at risk of developing measles, with symptoms appearing up to 21 days after the exposure.

Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead but he’s changing addresses anyway:

Franco exhumation: Spanish dictator’s remains being moved

The remains of Spanish dictator Francisco Franco are being moved from a vast mausoleum to a low-key grave, 44 years after his elaborate funeral.

Thursday’s long-awaited relocation fulfils a key pledge of the socialist government, which said Spain should not continue to glorify a fascist who ruled the country for nearly four decades.

There was a movie years ago, based on a novel (Clint Eastwood? Kevin Costner?) where the President was trying to rape a girl, she grabbed a letter opener and stabbed him to protect herself, and the Secret Service shoots her. The rest of the story is chasing the letter opener that would prove the stabbing was self-defense (angle of the wound? I don’t remember.)

re: #155 jaunte

it’s been pointed out time and again that there are steps in the process (and it is due process. theres even an opportunity to confront your accuser - later)

house investigates
house votes
senate holds trial etc

this is the investigation stage but actually only a preliminary part - to determine if the allegations ‘have a basis in reality’

LA Times makes a good point about ‘public’

The purpose of the secret sessions is at least twofold: to try to prevent witnesses in the first phase from coordinating their testimony, and to have a record of sworn testimony that can be used to prevent witnesses from changing their stories when the hearings go public

would the R’s really want to air this unvarnished, unscripted phase?
let the bombshells fly on live tv? really?
i dont think so.

198
mmmirele  Oct 24, 2019 • 8:09:58am

Seriously, seriously considering driving over to LA to stand in front of asshat John MacArthur’s church with a sign on Sunday. The sign would simply say:

JOHN MACARTHUR
MARY MAGDALENE PREACHED
“JESUS IS RISEN!”

MacArthur told “teacher to women” Beth Moore to “go home” last weekend. MacArthur and his bunch don’t believe women should preach.

heavy.com

Beth Moore, for her own part, told followers to stop slagging Johnny Mac, and, frankly, she failed. I’m personally thinking she was told to back off because it would put her “teaching to women” and her lucrative Bible study business in jeopardy. And, to be blunt, I have little respect for a woman who benefits from the system while at the same time telling women to back off.

MacArthur’s teachings regarding women are nasty and dangerous. He has a university that is on probation right now with WASC in part because they didn’t report campus sexual assaults as they’re required to by law.

Again, seriously considering this, even though I really hate driving and the idea of driving 425 miles just so I could stand outside with a sign sounds crazy, BUT HEY, it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve done something like this.

The AoG is a Pentecostal group and part of the larger grouping known as “charismatics.” MacArthur has written and spoken against them. Not saying *they’re* right either, but this tweet is so telling.

*blink* What an enormous waste of money, just so the dude could step on “the charismatics” every time he went behind his desk.

That’s the point that needs to be hit home. That they impeached over lying to a grand jury about adultery. Really fucking Republicans ask yourself how you would feel if Obama asked Ukraine or anyone to get dirt on Mitt Romney’s business dealings and tell me what you would want done to him. God this is so infuriating how we live in this post-factual universe where facts don’t matter.

Meanwhile, the GOP effort to strike down the ACA in the courts means that those with a preexisting condition would be hit with massive premium increases if the GOP is successful. The ACA prohibits premium hikes for those with preexisting conditions, and CF is a preexisting condition.

Without that protection, those with CF would lack insurance, and would die so much sooner, while saddled with medically induced bankruptcies from those high costs.

So, this is a completely ignorant take courtesy of the NY Post op ed. I feel dumber just thinking about this, but it needs to be fisked anyways Eco madness is behind the 737 MAX debacle, but no one is talking about it.

There’s a reason no one is talking about it.

It’s sheer dumbfuckery.

Boeing has sought to keep the same airframe in play since there’s huge costs in building new plane from scratch. They thought they could get FAA and authorities to sign off on stretched version of the 737, which has new more efficient engines that cost less to operate than the prior generation of 737.

It’s about operational cost savings, not the environment. Boeing can claim that the plane reduces emissions, because that’s absolutely true. The engines burn less, pollute less, and deliver more power and can haul more people than the prior engine/plane combination.

But the crash happened because Boeing hid that key mechanisms changed and that the computers would take over and fight the pilot over key decisions under certain circumstances, and drive the plane into the ground.

There is nothing about the environment involved here except the toxic culture at Boeing that skirted the rules, and the lax oversight at the FAA as a result of Reagan (and forward) handing over significant oversight to the very manufacturers who build the planes.

asinine

I don’t understand why people here are giving Rachel a hard time for her comments yesterday; after all, this is the reported exchange about shooting someone on Fifth Avenue:

Man, there’s simply nothing more exhausting and rage inducing than the Calvinist “wealth = personal worth” mindset. Clearly, if you’re working your ass off and aren’t rich, you’re just a bad person and deserve your squalor and misery. Good people succeed always and are rich, therefore if you’re poor you’re bad and worth only contempt. And you should never have any free time, luxury, or breathing room ever, because wanting that proves you’re just too lazy to be good like all those holy rich people.

I want to say that this is worth torches and pitchforks but it’s clear a significant amount of people in this country would take up said torches and pitchforks and march on the peasantry instead of the aristocracy.

Every last one of their electronic devices need to be accounted for and scanned for malware that could enable our rivals and enemies access to our most important classified info and methods.

again, if you are young and single, that is a great thing to do and I can only recommend that as a beneficial course of action

But not all of us fit that bill

This guy has a near-death experience. Instead of using his recovery time to reflect on his career and how he might change to become a positive influence for everyone, he emerges as a bigger a-hole than before.

I have two friends whose husbands work in SCIFs in DC. One of them said yesterday that if her husband had taken his phone into the office, this is what would have happened: 1) his phone would have been taken away. 2) His phone would have been pulled apart into pieces and he might get the pieces back in six weeks. 3) He would probably get fired. They are SERIOUS about No Electronic Devices in a SCIF.

I hate that my congressman is a fucking lawbreaker.

re: #232 lawhawk

My understanding from reading around is that it’s actually worse than that. The new engines on the 737 Max are more powerful and more efficient, but they’re also larger and require pylons that have been shortened and pushed further forward of the wing than on a stock 737. This had the result of pushing the aircraft’s aerodynamic center forward, which leaves it much more likely to stall in event too much power is applied. Boeing’s solution? Put in a “middle man” computer that senses the aircraft is in a stall and bypasses pilot input to force the nose down.

With the new design finished, they then exploited loopholes in FAA regs that allow manufacturers to self-certify to say that their engineers had signed off on the mods so that they could push the plane into production as an “upgrade” to an existing model rather than a whole new aircraft that needed proper testing and certification. And then sold them to airlines as “upgrades” that pilots experienced with existing 737 models could type-certify on with a few hours in a simulator. Pilots are alleging that Boeing gave them no instruction on the new anti-stall system and buried all mention of it in the manuals, while Boeing (in full CYA mode) is claiming the pilots were trained in how to deactivate the system in an emergency. Note the keywords “in an emergency,” which generally in industry speak means “at normal flight altitudes, in normal conditions, with no other problems going on at the time.” No instruction was given on what to do when you’re climbing after take-off and the system decides (due to faulty data) that you’re actually in a stall and bypasses all controls so it can augur the nose into the ground.

Surprise, surprise, relying upon companies to police themselves doesn’t work.

The infamous 1973 DOJ rules apply only to the office of the President and not to any other government official.

It’s standard GOP philosophy that (a) businesses can police themselves without government interference and (b) businesses don’t need any stinking regulations that they need to follow. The Ayn Rand view of the economy to rule us all!

There is nothing wrong with attending evening classes, expanding one’s qualifications, etc., especially when you are young, but one should not be punished with poverty for not doing it.

People also have families to raise on those evenings…

Not too mention working non-stop WITHOUT breaks will destroy your productivity and make you a tired, aggravated, miserable person.

That’s why it’s called work-life BALANCE.

I’ve been working on creating a board game in my spare time. Some nights what I do, is I come home from work, eat dinner, spend a few hours working on the game and then watch TV or play video games for awhile before I go to bed.

Some nights I put some extra time in on the game. Some nights none at all.

There is more to life than fucking working yourself to death. This is so unique to American culture. Other countries have rest periods mandated BY LAW. Here, there are some states where an employer doesn’t even have to give you ANY BREAKS AT ALL if they don’t want to.

We’re human being, not fucking slaves. We deserve down time.

It was less devastating because it was a second term. Once the re-election happened, things probably started to go on some autopilot waiting for the next guy. He seems less arrogant and divisive than Trump, too. And we were fortunate to have good people who could keep things going with no desire to overturn and wreck everything.

And now for my beg:

While I don’t regret the retirement at all-more time to write, and I feel much better, the buyout that helped enable me to retire has created as you can see, a little problem with Social Security. I’m going to be reimbursed, but whatever happens is going to take about a month, and I can do is wait. I know I’m asking a lot, but thanks to your generosity, I’ve been able to pay my condo fee and a student loan as well. Plus I hope to do some dental work as well.

re: #275 Citizen K

It explains the weird guilt I’m feeling about being retired. After years of precariousness, I finally have some stability. But I’m not hustling, and don’t need to anymore. No more going to unemployment looking for jobs that paid less than my seasonal job anymore. No looking for even temporary jobs anymore. I can sit at home now, write and rest. Instead of going through the off-and on tango, It’s every month for the rest of my life now.
A non-Calvinist self could say, I earned it, and probably paid more in taxes (sales and otherwise), than I will ever draw out.

I’ve seen elsewhere that Buttigieg pretended the tea party wasn’t just Republicans in 2010, but I haven’t been able to get a good source. If that’s true, then I’m done with him.

By 2010, it was completely clear what the tea party was — racist Republicans letting their freak flags fly.

@HeerJeet
Pete Buttigieg’s model supreme court justice is a guy who was appointed by Reagan, consistently worked to gut workers’ rights & voting rights, and resigned to allow Donald Trump to appoint Kavanaugh.

That takes care of Buttigieg for me! Out!
