Lyrics:

I was always working steady
But I never called it art
I got my shit together
Meeting Christ and reading Marx
It failed my little fire
But it’s bright the dying spark
Go tell the young messiah
What happens to the heart

There’s a mist of summer kisses
Where I tried to double-park
The rivalry was vicious
The women were in charge
It was nothing, it was business
But it left an ugly mark
I’ve come here to revisit
What happens to the heart

I was selling holy trinkets
I was dressing kind of sharp
Had a pussy in the kitchen
And a panther in the yard

In the prison of the gifted
I was friendly with the guards
So I never had to witness
What happens to the heart

I should have seen it coming
After all I knew the chart
Just to look at her was trouble
It was trouble from the start
Sure we played a stunning couple
But I never liked the part
It ain’t pretty, it ain’t subtle
What happens to the heart

Now the angel’s got a fiddle
The devil’s got a harp
Every soul is like a minnow
Every mind is like a shark
I’ve broken every window
But the house, the house is dark
I care but very little
What happens to the heart

Then I studied with this beggar
He was filthy, he was scarred
By the claws of many women
He had failed to disregard
No fable here no lesson
No singing meadowlark
Just a filthy beggar guessing
What happens to the heart

I was always working steady
But I never called it art
It was just some old convention
Like the horse before the cart
I had no trouble betting
On the flood, against the ark
You see, I knew about the ending
What happens to the heart

I was handy with a rifle
My father’s .303
I fought for something final
Not the right to disagree

So who made the decision to change it in the first place?

But that’s not the most pressing question.

The question that needs to be answered is why does everyone take anything Trump said about the raid at face value - about what Baghdadi said/did at the end, who was involved, and why he thanked the Russians before even our own troops or our regional allies?

And why would anyone trust Trump when he thinks that Baghdadi is a higher value target than say… bin Laden, or bin Laden’s current successor Zawahiri?

Trump is so envious of Obama’s successful OBL raid that he can’t help but try to out do him, even if the facts and circumstances don’t allow for it. Trump just knows that the media will cover his pressers and do nothing to correct him in the moment. By then, his nonsense is reported and regurgitated before the fact checkers can do their thing - even the best like Dan Dale can’t do that that fast.

A fair enough point - tons of Americans probably knew about ISIS - but I’d be willing to wager only a relative handful outside military or intel circles could name al-Baghdadi as the leader.

Clinton started flinging missiles at him in ‘98; one set missed him by about 20 minutes.

And congressional Republicans at the time pooh-poohed the whole thing, accused him of wagging the dog to distract from the Lewinski headlines.

This just in: I freaking hate MicroSoft.

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve been trying to recover data from old DDS tape backups my family made on assorted Windows systems between 1998-2001 for a while now.
The first hurdle was getting the necessary and correct tape drive and SCSI controller card. Then it was getting the right prehistoric operating systems and assembling a rig old enough to run them properly (no small task in these parts, took quite a while to get a functioning circa-1999 rig). After that it was rotating the operating systems on the rig because it turns out that the OSs each used different parameters for the same process, so it can’t just be one for them all. Then it was discovering that the errors i was seeing was because the tape drive I had essentially croaked and was failing, and had to be replaced; the replacement arrived on Friday. Now the target OS (Win98) recognizes the tape drive properly, but the backup software doesn’t no matter what I do.

I just can’t catch a break with the damn thing..

re: #56 Backwoods_Sleuth

I believe that trump is still hyped up over the fact that he was able to finally order someone’s death and take credit for it.

Trump gets excited talking about graphic injury and degradation, and seems to be unfazed by violence.

Like, his descriptions of people killed by MS13, where nominally the point was the badness of it, but all the emphasis was on the gore. But also in weird shit like describing some female critic as turning up to a party with cut bleeding post-surgery face.

But the degradation thing is always there. It’s the center point of most of his casual lies: somebody either abasing themselves to him (the big crying man stories) or being deserving of abasement.

The fucked-up tell here is the way the same language is used over and over. He’s not describing the real world, but his particular fantasy version…”like a dog” somehow keys into his worldview of what is beneath contempt, deserving of dying badly….

My sympathies. My son’s hard drive died last week and the repair proved … interesting.. due to MS induced foibles. Windows 10 is a s**tshow.

One of the better aspects of the multitudes in the herd of Unixen is that tar and cpio have remained very compatable over the years. Even when the yahoos at GNU have had to create fancier versions of tar and compress (aka Gzip in that case) they have very carefully maintained backwards compatibility at the file level. There can still be issues with drives (try finding a working QIC tape drive anymore) but once you have the files off the tapes, there are easily readable.

(try finding a working QIC tape drive anymore)

The absolute worst QIC drives came from Colorado Memory Systems, which hung off the old floppy interface.

The later QIC models that were SCSI-based were actually pretty reliable, and some of the last QIC tapes/drives were the Tandberg SLR tapes that could go up to 70GB of uncompressed data.

I managed to score a cheap LTO-2 drive and dozens of blank tape that I had to ship to a company to degauss the tapes so I could use them. Eventually, I sacked using tape as the price of large capacity hard drives were falling and the price of later generations of LTO drives & media were cost-prohibitive, never mind that the hard drives could back up faster than even the latest tape drives with a SAS/SCSI interface.

Good reporting on the hypocritical shits Javanka:

thedailybeast.com

While Jared and Ivanka might not go full Harvey Weinstein on reporters—the former movie executive hired ex-Mossad agents to track journalists and intimidate sources—there is no question, Ward says, that Jared and Ivanka have no compunction going to the head of news outlets to interfere with pieces they deem unflattering. “Every reporter knows they will be on the phone to Rupert Murdoch. Their guiding credo is PR above everything else. Ivanka thinks she is brilliant at public relations,” said Ward, the author of Kushner, Inc., and a senior reporter at CNN.

That might explain, in part, why Hunter Biden has gone through a media inquisition about his dealings in Ukraine and China, while Ivanka received virtually no additional press scrutiny after The New Yorker detailed her work on a real estate project in Azerbaijan with local partners who had alleged ties to the Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a designated terrorist organization. Hell, he’ll be in a skybox with his own Fox announcer calling the game just for him, with the blinds drawn and video feed on a 10 second delay so any “unpleasantness” won’t reach his sensitive eyeballs.

re: #73 Eric The Fruit Bat

Back in that time period there were so many third-party backup software floating around it was maddening - I used Norton Ghost just around that time period as it could do a bare metal restore, along with Partition Magic to resize partitions….

Thankfully not dealing with third-party in this case - with one exception (which was borked to begin with), the tape backups I’m working on were made with the OS internal software, MS Backup, before it was retired with Windows XP.
My first attempt was to try the recovery on a more modern rig with Windows 2000. Win2K’s NTbackup software was able to identify the tapes and could “see” that they had content, but couldn’t start the recovery process because of the differences between NTbackup and MSbackup. Now everything’s aligned perfectly, so I’ve no idea why it can’t recognize a drive that’s identified nicely by the Device Manager.

Funny part is, the only reason the backups exist at all was because my late dad was given a tape drive from work for a brief project and it ended up staying at home until ~2001, and he insisted that we use the drive to back things up because “Drives like these will stay in popular demand for decades. They’re not a fad like those DVDs you like; those will go the way of Betamax in a year or two, just you see.”

Nah, my day combat life saver bags were smaller. Same layout, but designed for 500ML & 250ML IV bags. Not the 1000ML bags of the M3. Our medics carried their typical M5 pack & sometimes an additional M3, load full of IVs, in their rucks. And, M3s and M17s in their vehicles. At the end they were carrying all sorts of high speed low drag packs and vests, which seemed to change monthly

Can’t remember where I read it - it was a few years ago - but apparently the nature of a suicide vest/belt detonation is such that the head of the bomber is often found separated from the body and more or less intact. Queers are hard enough for people to understand. They live different and dress different and that’s bad enough. But a classic gay man stereotype like a lisping bearded dude is easy for them to comprehend compared to someone wanting to permanently become something different than they were born.

They like to make this big schpeal about how “god doesn’t make mistakes.” They hate it when I say - “Exactly. This person is given this burden, not so much for their soul but for yours. Can you live up to what God wants from you? Can you succeed at this test?”

Of course, I use that language from my memory of this from a great SF novel:

Tests are a gift. And great tests are a great gift. To fail the test is a misfortune. But to refuse the test is to refuse the gift, and something worse, more irrevocable, than misfortune.

Narrator’s Voice: Fox did not show it

I was wondering that too. I have had it on Fox local channel for the game and didn’t see him throw out the pitch.

Speaking of which, Rango and I had a really nice walk this afternoon. I decided that, give the winds and the nonfunctional traffic lights, discretion would be the better part of valor. No matter which way I go, I’d have to trust that people remember to treat a nonfunctional traffic light like a stop sign. Plus, you know, red flag warnings, power outrages, busy firefighters, etc.

No pics, but really, look at yesterdays and imagine him a day older.

I really don’t care who wins this world series.

I dislike baseball in general and have more “root against” moments than the tiny handful of root for like the old time cubs.

So my hope is that one wins tonight and the other wins the next game and then who cares who wins so long as it’s at the end of Game 7 because then people who actually enjoy baseball will have gotten as much as they can. And that’s good enough, in my book.

Me? 10/20 Arsenal plays Liverpool. GOOOOO GOOONERS! ;)

Since I live in Southern Maryland, I’m rooting for the Nationals. D.C. has had a great year in sports so this would be a nice cap on 2019. Otherwise I don’t watch sports beyond Tennis.

He’s really showing his true colors by attacking impeachment. I think the far lefties like Taibbi who ignore Trump’s crimes since they wish for a powerful left wing executive themselves.

I’m kinda conflicted. Houston has a lot of players I like but I live in NoVa and have a lot of friends and family who are Nats fans. But I’m also an Orioles fan and there’s a minor rivalry between the two teams. Plus I’m a little petty. I get a lot of grief from my Nats fans family for not switching to the Nats when they moved to DC but I was born an Orioles fan and my fondest baseball memories as a kid were all with them. Grew up a huge Ripken fan.

Ripkin is a good reason to be a baseball fan. One of the true greats.

Sounds right. He won’t want to be there for the 7th inning stretch. Because even though its about him, he’d still have to stay for the ending :)

It’s funny because I wasn’t anything like him. I’m a lefty and not much of a hitter. Pitching was my favorite thing to do. Even made all stars one year. I actually liked pitching in relief more than starting because I liked helping getting my team out of jams.

Maria Butina is making rounds on #Russia’s state TV and is really laying it on thick: claiming that while incarcerated in the U.S., she was forced to eat food off the floor, had to fight for food, was not allowed to use the bathroom for 16 hours and guards threatened to rape her.

She’s having that Mexican Toddler fantasy again.

Not gonna happen soon. Emery has allowed for a highly dysfunctional team environment.

Why should she expect special treatment?
