So, just watched the series finale of The Deuce. What a great way to end the series - a nice little touch of magical realism.
Kudos to David Simon and George Pelacanos. And a nod to HBO for sticking with The Deuce and not cancelling it (it’s ratings have been generally rather low) and allowing a great story to be told.

There ceases to be any valid legal excuse for obstruction after that point, because “It’s not a ‘legitimate’ inquiry” is not going to impress any but the most wingnut of judges.

I used to think that affinity for a monarchy was the one thing that separated our conesrvatives from the European conservatives who either venerated a monarchy out of misplaced tradition or not trusting the democratic process. I no longer think that way. I think ultimately fascism is very similar to monarchism in that it is a cult around one leader. Now this has happened under communist dictatorships too i.e. Stalin, the Kims, and others but it’s more obvious to me than ever that American right wingers want a powerful executive that is not questioned. Likewise, they will deem any left of center executive as illegitimate or undeserving of his or her power. I’ll concede that Obama did grow executive power but I would argue that Republican obstruction helped pave the way for that.

Doc Liz, how familiar are you with the AfD? I know you’re in the Czech Republic and not Germany but I was learning more about them last night watching a German documentary on YouTube about how they have parallels to the Nazis. There’s a couple things that really disturbed me about them. They for the most part seem fairly youthful. The Nazis too were a youth driven movement. The other thing and I’ve seen this here in the US too is this nationalistic fervor that you can never be a real American/German/whatever unless you’re the right racial background. To these guys, there is no way that children and grandchildren of refugees who speak fluent German can ever be German and that attitude scares the hell out of me.

Yeah I noticed that too. I’ve mostly only been in former West Germany but when my brother and I were in Colditz, the innowner made a racist comment about the Romani that made my brother and I cringe. We had wanted to stay at the castle but a youth group had booked it for the two nights we were there. Meanwhile our cousin who lives in Frankfurt near where our family is from originally on that side of the family is very liberal minded and was telling me that Frankfurt as a whole is pretty liberal minded. I like what I am reading about in Slovakia with the new president there. I’m a big admirer of hers. She speaks the four languages that are commonly spoken in Slovakia and she’s quite socially liberal by Slovakian standards.

West Germans have been living, working and attending school with immigrants since the 60’s. Although not always models of tolerance and integration, they have generally learned to accept and get along with their “fellow citizens with a background of migration” as they are referred to officially.
In former East Germany, they knew only guest workers from Vietnam or North Korea who lived in segregated barracks and were sent home after their work contracts expired. Or the arrogant scions of third-world dictators and their henchmen sent over on student exchange programs.

We’re still dealing with the cleanup and infrastructure needs.
NJ Transit still hasn’t upgraded its facilities in Hoboken, though work is supposed to start there to address flooding from the Long Slip. They’ve moved some facilities to higher ground, but a Sandy event would still have catastrophic effect on NJ Transit (less if they follow their damned rules and shift equipment to higher ground from their Meadows facility).
LIRR has improved, but the big problems are the NEC tunnels - both on the Hudson and East River side that have to be repaired. Both are Amtrak owned. MTA subway tunnels are still being repaired, and that will take another few years to fix.
Barrier beaches are still threatened by coastal flooding, and we’re still building more along the shore than we should. A plan to build a barrier around Lower Manhattan/LES is in the planning stage, and construction could start soon.
There are still plenty of homes that have yet to be fixed, elevated above the flood level, etc. But the immediate damage is not as visible as it once was.

We were out in Long Beach a few weeks ago. They’re still going through the process of raising houses up so they’ll be insurable. And we went out to Smith Point on Friday night for a night beach walk and walked out to the Fire Island breach that Sandy caused.

He kind of really didn’t have a choice. Obama was popular in New Jersey and Christie had re-election the next fall. I’m not saying he only made nice with Obama because of that consideration but it wasn’t like his motivations were entirely alturistic. I mean did I like Peter King in New York of all people calling out his fellow Republicans for how they acted on disaster relief to the Eastern Seaboard? Hell yes but it just means he was serving his own interests. The problem with Republican legislators especially in Washington is they’re fine with “big government” if they know it will benefit their constituents but they hate it for other people. I wouldn’t oppose relief from FEMA if a giant tornado hit let’s say Steve King’s district in Iowa because the people there are our fellow Americans. When disaster strikes our country, we have an obligation both legally and morally to help but Steve would never extend that same belief to New Yorkers or Puetro Ricans. I remember my grandparents telling me about a couple they knew through their friends. Rock solid Republicans all the way down but they liked the benefits and help that the federal government was able to give since their daughter struggled with a mental illness. I don’t deny that Republicans and conservatives love their families. They most certainly do. The problem is the programs they just shrug off as “big government” or “socialism” are programs that benefit other people’s loved ones. Now if you want to discuss how to improve their effectiveness, fine but don’t use rare cases of abuse in things like welfare benefits which is exactly what Reagan got away with doing for years to discredit the whole idea that government can and should be a positive force in helping the less well off. I’ve grown up seeing conservatives insist that you can’t throw money at programs but yet they never respond that way when it comes to the military or prisons but they’re all about it if it involves more spending on education and health care.

To the extent that Harris is right, perhaps it is not a coincidence that women like she, Janet Reno, and Marion Wright Edelman have been the ones to champion the cause of children in an effort to prevent crime.
Harris has taken a lot of heat for her history as a prosecutor. But what she demonstrates in these clips is that she understands criminal justice at an incredibly deep level. As Jeniffer Rubin notes, contrary to what many have suggested, this is an area where Harris leads the pack. Being unburdened by the need to appear “tough,” she is able to articulate how we can be smart on crime.
