Thing is, even Never-Trumpers often say they’re fine with Trump’s policy ideas, just offended by his crass character. They’d be right there cheering for a president who implemented the exact same policies but wasn’t a buffoon.

He minces no words and makes it blatantly clear how inhumane and corrupt they are.

100% right. And then they try to tell the left to make our candidates more favorable to them. In otherwords sacrifice our principles because they’re too chickenshit to admit that Trump is a fault and product of what many of them spread before 2016.

Exactly. Trump won the 2016 GOP primary by being the worst asshole in that wretched hive of scum and villainy. It was never close.

They pretty much are. And you’re seeing a bunch of Senators, Representatives, etc. who are neck deep in the NRA corruption, connections to Rudy and buddies, etc. As the party that constantly wraps itself in the flag and playing uber-patriot it might well be that when the dam breaks their support goes with it and they’re in the wilderness for even longer than if they’d dumped Trump sooner.

And Pence doesn’t have the reality-show personality and following of Trump.

Nancy: sure thing bub. Here’s how the GOP did it before, and here’s how we’re doing it now. Same practice.

GOP: wah wah that’s not fair, we don’t want secret testimony we want it in the open.

Nancy: it’s now in the open, for all to see the level of criminality in Trumpworld and the cacophony of caterwauling from GOPers who are complicit in the coverup.

GOP: this is a star chamber, and we need private hearings/secret testimony to get an honest reading of the testimony.

Book Review:
The Long Shadow of the Welfare Queen.

When Ronald Reagan and his advisors wanted to undermine the very institution of social programs, he turned to a news story out of Chicago—the tale of one Linda Taylor, who’d bilked the government benefits system out of so much money she was dubbed the “welfare queen.”

The trope of the “welfare queen” is powerful, toxic, and stubbornly persistent. Cemented by Reagan in his campaign for the presidency, the idea helped to both racialize and poison the very idea of financial assistance for the poor, a rhetorical trick that rendered everyone who applied for Aid to Families With Dependent Children benefits suspect by association. Even Joe Biden came to deal in the imagery, advocating for reform legislation in 1988 in the Newark paper: “We are all too familiar with the stories of welfare mothers driving luxury cars and leading lifestyles that mirror the rich and famous,” he wrote. “Whether they are exaggerated or not, these stories underlie a broad social concern that the welfare system has broken down—that it only parcels out welfare checks and does nothing to help the poor find productive jobs.” The words still have enough juice in the American consciousness that there’s a GLOW character who performs in the ring as “Welfare Queen.”

It is beyond folklore, it is received wisdom, part of the mythos of conservative America. Taylor herself was a major criminal, involved in all kinds of shady stuff besides welfare scams but she has come to represent not her reprehensible self but an entire class of people. She served 3 years in prison, and died in 2002.

He used one grifter to smear millions of people on public assistance and it worked. It would be if one greedy businessman was used to totally demolish the principle of private business ownership. Reagan was ProtoTrump in so many ways more than any prominent elected national Republican before or after him.

Why doesn’t he go after Trump for abuse of the Emoluments Clause? Funny how he is butt hurt that college students are getting compensated for the use of their images while ignoring the fact that billionaires abs corporations often don’t even pay taxes.

College kids angry at him bothers him less than Trump being mad at him and potentially getting him primaried. He’s a spineless weasel.

Thanks to Putin’s expertise in media, and the willing help of American traitors, our enemies have identified loathsome and fucked up in the American body politic, mapped it, nurtured it, and weaponized it as a reliable voting bloc.

IMO Putin is merely taking advantage of the GOP’s party above country attitude. Without the total degeneration of the GOP into a mindless cult of savage morons, Russian attempts to influence US elections would be a joke.

like i said above
there are already tax rules for scholarships.
there are already tax rules for other income (even though it may be new to the players)

the other (new) income is taxable
the scholarships are not if they’re structured that way

you qualify for a scholarship or you dont
if you do, your ability to earn income is based on the scholarship rules, not tax law

this has nothing to do with taxation and the income is not connected to each other taxwise

there is nothing new here

And yet I imagine your relatives think nothing of the many properties Trump owns. What frustrates me about many people who insist the Dems abandoned the working class is that a lot of the working class got resentments to the fact that the Democratic Party began supporting programs that benefited all Americans not just white people. That was really the genesis of the silent majority. Civil unrest and Vietnam played a role but it was ultimately resentment due to LBJ to his credit unlike FDR who they and their parents/grandparents loved realizing that we needed a “Great Society” as opposed to a New Deal. Which is why ultimately while LBJ deserves all the criticism he gets over Vietnam, I much prefer his domestic legacy over FDR’s.

Certainly they were underestimated but if you blame Obama for that, you need to criticize Reagan’s guys for arming Saddam in the 80’s and definitely the Bush administration for turning to Iraq not even a year after the first troops landed in Afghanistan. If you want to keep following that thread backward, Reagan armed Saddam because we had given weapons to the Iranians in exchange for hostages, and suddenly Iran was doing really well in the Gulf War.

So yeah, you can draw a thread back from ISIS to the Iraq Wars I and II, to us coddling Saddam because we were freaked about the mullahs in Iran because Reagan and his boys were afraid that Ronnie wouldn’t get re-elected if hostages were seized and he looked as weak as Carter did.

Boris is getting booed everywhere he goes these days.

The shine has worn off.

Thing is, the Conservatives and their allies can win a majority of the seats with only a plurality of the votes because the UK uses single member districts just like we do, and several parties to split the non-Tory vote. With Boris delivering Brexit, the Tories shouldn’t lose many votes to the Brexit Party.

I can accept that Corbyn’s not popular. I, personally, feel he comes across like some geography teacher that’s somehow become leader of the Labour party. However, the 2017 election results showed that he’s clearly more popular that he’s generally given credit for, so I wouldn’t write him off.

With Boris delivering Brexit, the Tories shouldn’t lose many votes to the Brexit Party.

There is two caveats to that line of argument. One is that the Conservative party are going to lose seats in this election precisely because of the single member districts you mention. They’re definitely going to take a beating in Scotland, (Which voted 2/3 remain) for example. Granted, they’ve not got many seats in Scotland, but given the precarious position they’re already in, and with their coalition partners the DUP being antagonistic about the customs arrangement, there’s not much wiggle room, so these few seats are actually quite important.

Secondly, the line that the Conservatives have taken against the Brexit party about “Let’s Get Brexit Done!!!11!!ELEVENTY11!! And ONLY WE CAN DELIVER IT!!!11!! etc” has obviously taken a dent given that the UK is clearly not leaving the EU on Thursday October 31st as previously promised by Boris, and you can bet Nigel Farage will gleefully run with this in his desperate attempt to finally become an MP after a couple of decades of trying and failing. (And if he doesn’t, questions will be raised…)

Normally my county (such a hotbed of disenchanted Whigs who are now Republicans) is absolutely buried in campaign signs.

Little yard signs, large road signs, yada yada yada, EVERYWHERE.

Except now.

I counted four little yard signs for Bevin when I was out and about today.

FOUR.

When there would normally be dozens and dozens.

Two for Beshear, but those were in the two usual Dem yards. I would have been disappointed if those yards were empty, but they did not disappoint.

Think pro-Brexit candidate loses is equivalent to a Trump-supporting incumbent losing.

Don’t need Brexit or Trump on the ballot to understand the voters’ opinion in either case.

I mean he could be tough to discuss issues with at times but he really seemed to have a hard time understanding that people could have different perspectives on him than stuff. Religion is a good example of that. I don’t consider myself religious but I do think AM was at times way too eager to broadbrush all Christians in a way he would rightfully be upset if it was done against atheists or any type of Non-Christian. I also thought he felt because being a relative luddite worked for him than everyone could. I understand that I have disagreements with some of y’all about FB and its use but it’s just that. She wants to take all the credit for things that aren’t totally a cluster but she wants to act like she’s got nothing to do with the worst Trump impulses like backing out of the Paris Accords or the fact that recently the US was one of the few countries on the UN Human Rights Council to oppose a condemnation on homosexuality being a capital offense in a few countries. She hides who she really is which is yes her Dad.

This was such an interesting period for Japanese art. Some were abandoning the woodblock print form for oils; some were using new pigments to make bolder woodblock prints; some were lamenting the passing of an age of “pure” japanese art.

On the other side of the world, European artists confronted with the woodblock art of Hiroshige and Hokusai began the Impressionist movement.
