“A lot of things going on here for me. My daughter called her little brother Juice B Crypts when he was born. I didn’t know what that meant. But here the opening shot is of him climbing the Prison Ships Martyr Monument in Fort Greene Park, which is an actual crypt, and near to where I lived for 13 years. The place played a central role in my life for a long time. On another level, one of the guys from the building where I live rides an E-Unicycle around my neighborhood and was the original kernel of an idea for this video. So he and his friends are the e-unicyclists. My daughter and her kindergarten friends are the kids on the scooters. Other friends of ours are some of the skaters. And Colin elevated the concept of the video extending it into a broader story about the evolution of human transport which is a contentious issue these days in our city of New York. Heck, a number of the best voices can’t play an instrument and some are even music-illiterate. Though there are still more who can at least play a rhythm guitar, like Elvis, than who can’t read what they’re singing except the actual lyrics.

So goddamned glad I didn’t pre-order this one. Between Kojima and the fact that it’s built on the Decima Engine from Horizon: Zero Dawn I assumed it was going to be great, but I just wasn’t feeling it. The fucking weirdness of all the marketing and images kept me from pulling the trigger and the idea of spending that much time looking at Norman Reedus wasn’t appealing.

In Death Stranding, your character Sam carries a small baby in an orange bottle strapped to his chest. It stays with him at all times. The child, called a BB, is essentially a tool: it alerts Sam to ghostly apparitions called BTs, which dot the post-apocalyptic landscape he must traverse. The whole situation is unsettling. BB cries when it gets scared — whether it’s because of imminent danger or because you keep falling down a slippery mountain — and the haunting sound is piped through the speaker on the PS4 controller. This makes it even more unsettling.

Sounds like FUN!

Initially, all you’re doing is walking. The company you work for, Bridges, will provide a package, and you have to deliver it on foot. Like most video game characters, Sam can carry an incredible amount of stuff; but unlike his contemporaries, Sam has to account for everything he carries. Before you set out on each mission, you have to carefully arrange your load — from healing items to precious cargo — so that Sam can stay balanced.

I’ve spoken to his manager about this at length (Bob’s manager was once my road manager, way back in the late 70s). Here’s the explanation.

Dylan loves touring, but he absolutely refuses to become a nostalgia act. He and his manager had long talks about it, and Bob figured the best way to avoid being a nostalgia act was to scare away the people who wanted endless replays of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man,’ and the easiest way to do that was to move radically away from all vestiges of his past.

He no longer plays guitar in concert. Until the last tour, he wouldn’t even play harmonica. And it’s worked - the old fans complain that he doesn’t sound like the idealized Dylan, and there’s a whole new crowd out there that is accepting of what he’s doing now. In short, the strategy worked.

He did play “Blowin’ In The Wind,” but other than that it was stuff from Time Out Of Mind, Love And Theft, and his new album at the time Modern Times. I thought the experience delightful, but the olds there were quite disappointed.

And even the concept of the ‘endless tour’ was formulated to break the music industry mold of recording an album, touring for 18 months, then waiting for a year before recording another album and starting the cycle again. Bob loves being on the road but hates doing the expected, and that guides everything he does and how he does it.

Like, bad, trite art and bad, trite reads of art just form a stink cloud around reactionaries, and I think it’s because they lack the ability to acknowledge things that don’t even indirectly critique their worldview. As such, all challenged art is threatening and offensive, and “good art” cleaves to convention not because conventions are established by the patina of skilled effort, but because what is familiar and established in the status quo does not make them threatened.

So when they like good art it’s because they’ve been told it’s good, and look no deeper into what an piece means (musical, visual, dramatic)…because the only value of art is as a mirror. Hence why so often they conjure with older art and artists (and genres, like classical music) as signs of their own taste and intelligence, but never engage deeply with one painter versus another, or a later period (once considered revolutionary and vulger) and an earlier one.

Entertainment often is the means of programming.

And the worst are the big ticket items.

Networks like HGTV exist to spur consumerism.

Take a show like Property Brothers. So many episodes are about young couples wanting to tear down perfectly fine house interiors. Sure, there are episodes where the houses are indeed becoming derelict and a major renovation is required. But there are episodes where interiors have been kept in excellent condition, but are simply not fashionable, so they have to be destroyed.

So when they like good art it’s because they’ve been told it’s good, and look no deeper into what an piece means (musical, visual, dramatic)…because the only value of art is as a mirror. Hence why so often they conjure with older art and artists (and genres, like classical music) as signs of their own taste and intelligence, but never engage deeply with one painter versus another, or a later period (once considered revolutionary and vulger) and an earlier one.

Leaving the immediate border area, everyone on I10 was diverted through a fixed inspection station about 15 miles into Texas. The stop was cursory, probably because of the dogs and obvious high-tech sensors/imaging cameras.

At the scrapyard, many of the cobalt pellets that had remained in the source capsule were scattered around when the teletherapy unit was dropped by a magnetic crane. The rest of the pellets stuck to the magnet and became mixed with steel leaving the scrapyard. Most of the latter went to two local foundries. One foundry melted down the steel to produce the pedestal-style table legs used in fast food restaurants. The other produced steel rods (re-bar) for reinforcing concrete.

Our original plan was to go to Agua Prieta near Ft Huachuca, but that crossing is smaller and more delay-prone than El Paso. We’re looking to avoid backtracking I10 next time, so following the coast and river to Big Bend might be a plus. We also have to start using parks more than commercial campgrounds.

When I was little, milk came in a glass bottle, orange juice came in a glass bottle, soft drinks came in glass bottles (this was before aluminum cans became popular), etc.

The throw-away container really became dominant just in our lifetimes.

Going back to the old ways may be better.

When I was a kid our milk came in glass bottles too, but not from a “store”. Ours would get delivered from a local dairy a couple miles up the road. By mid 70’s they had stopped delivery but you just had to bring your bottles back to the farm and exchange for filled ones. Still no throwing anything away. That farm closed sometime in the 80’s and most people were left with store bought throw-away containers.

Here is the exact bottles our milk came in. Hell I might have had my hand on this exact bottle at one time or another :-)

My kids still mess with me when I absently pull the milk jug out of the fridge and shake it. Reflex from before homogenization became big, mix the cream back into the milk.

There is a lot to both sides of this dispute: on the one hand the notion that merely going through the motions is useless if not accompanied by faith.

Just thought I’d point out that the most Calvinist of Calvinists believe in something called “evanescent grace.” Which means, basically, that God can trick you into thinking you’re elect but you’re not. Here’s a quote from chapter 10, paragraph 4 of the London Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 (footnotes omitted):

The throw-away container really became dominant just in our lifetimes.

I had a uncle that ran a tiny neighborhood store that had a Coke machine, one of those old timey things that you had to shove a lever down to get a soda. It dispensed those 7oz glass bottles. He liked to brag that they were still a nickle. Any place else they were a dime.

I live in rural NW PA. Many of our local stores still have hitching posts outside of them. They are not for rustic adornment, they are used. Our local Walmart put up a buggy barn for the Amish that shop to have a place to park their horses and buggy’s out of the elements.

Normally I don’t make signs until Sunday morning, because I like to let my thoughts marinate, but I made signs this morning because some woman on my Trump-loving Congressman’s FB page is being an ass. She posted my picture from FB, so that everyone could “see the troll.” (My response: “59 and living my best life!”) So I made the signs and posted them to Rep. Biggs’ FB.

Sunday’s target is the Hillsong franchise in Mesa, Arizona. And the point is to let them know that their fearless leader, Brian Houston, is a man who covered up his father’s serial child sexual abuse. This didn’t come out until the Royal Commission inquiry in Australia in 2014. Here’s the latest story on this:

One of Frank Houston’s victims, Brent Sengstock, has come out publicly to discuss this. (He’d previously testified anonymously before the Royal Commission.) Sengstock has terminal stage 4 cancer. Sengstock’s Member of Parliament (Australia) is concerned Sengstock will not get justice before he dies.

Apparently someone at the State Department was on their game and told Morrison no, but Morrison is now denying that it ever happened. So that’s actually ONE good thing to come out of the shitshow that is the Trump administration.

Oh, and Asda says it’s raising wages by a whopping—get this—18p per hour. That works out to 23 cents American. Asda says it’s going to force its workers into the contract if they work next week, saying that working is acquiescence to the contract’s terms. Previously, Asda had said they would sack anyone who didn’t sign, but now, it’s the whole acquiescence thing.
