The New Video From Battles Is Exhilarating: “Fort Greene Park”

Music • Views: 24,899

YouTube

Directed by Colin Read, Battles’ ‘Fort Greene Park’ video is a love letter to New York City, bringing together a small army of skaters, cyclists, joggers, scooterists, rollerbladers, and veritably every other method of self-transport into an extended crew of DIY transportation-enthusiasts.

‘Fort Greene Park’ features on Battles’ new album ‘Juice B Crypts’, available now on WARP → battles.ffm.to

“A lot of things going on here for me. My daughter called her little brother Juice B Crypts when he was born. I didn’t know what that meant. But here the opening shot is of him climbing the Prison Ships Martyr Monument in Fort Greene Park, which is an actual crypt, and near to where I lived for 13 years. The place played a central role in my life for a long time. On another level, one of the guys from the building where I live rides an E-Unicycle around my neighborhood and was the original kernel of an idea for this video. So he and his friends are the e-unicyclists. My daughter and her kindergarten friends are the kids on the scooters. Other friends of ours are some of the skaters. And Colin elevated the concept of the video extending it into a broader story about the evolution of human transport which is a contentious issue these days in our city of New York. But in the end, it just a love letter to the place we live. New York City.” – Ian (Battles)

Can you guess all of the modes of transport used in the video? Comment your answers below, and who knows…

Yes, because if he hadn’t endangered the handler’s secrecy by broadcasting the name over Fox News, it would have been illegal for anyone else to name the dog.

I can’t hear “like a dog” without thinking of The Trial.

But I suspect that Trump isn’t making a Kafka reference, he just doesn’t have processing power to have more than one simile, and dogs being loving and loyal probably repulses him because he can’t conceive of people as anything other than fuckable meat ATMs.

…and now there’s a specific fucking dog and he’s getting all narcissist-thirsty because the dog is drawing focus and I feel like we’re in a short chapter in a Kafka novel….

Yeah, but I pretty sure the Trumps have always been around, and are currently buoyed politically by, people who view injuries obtained while pimping as somehow noble.

IIRC, most of the Trump family pimping was in Canada, where the pimp competition is nicer.

It does, however, seem like the vast majority of the really good songwriters can’t sing (and yet some try anyway—looking at you, Jim Steinman! and Dylan once had a voice but now croaks worse than Tom Waits), and a large number of the best voices can’t write.

Heck, a number of the best voices can’t play an instrument and some are even music-illiterate. Though there are still more who can at least play a rhythm guitar, like Elvis, than who can’t read what they’re singing except the actual lyrics.

(for the record, I’m pretty much music-illiterate myself but I have a good singer’s ear and voice-matching capabilities. Frustrating combo.)

So goddamned glad I didn’t pre-order this one. Between Kojima and the fact that it’s built on the Decima Engine from Horizon: Zero Dawn I assumed it was going to be great, but I just wasn’t feeling it. The fucking weirdness of all the marketing and images kept me from pulling the trigger and the idea of spending that much time looking at Norman Reedus wasn’t appealing.

In Death Stranding, your character Sam carries a small baby in an orange bottle strapped to his chest. It stays with him at all times. The child, called a BB, is essentially a tool: it alerts Sam to ghostly apparitions called BTs, which dot the post-apocalyptic landscape he must traverse. The whole situation is unsettling. BB cries when it gets scared — whether it’s because of imminent danger or because you keep falling down a slippery mountain — and the haunting sound is piped through the speaker on the PS4 controller. This makes it even more unsettling.

Sounds like FUN!

Initially, all you’re doing is walking. The company you work for, Bridges, will provide a package, and you have to deliver it on foot. Like most video game characters, Sam can carry an incredible amount of stuff; but unlike his contemporaries, Sam has to account for everything he carries. Before you set out on each mission, you have to carefully arrange your load — from healing items to precious cargo — so that Sam can stay balanced.

The prototypical video game fetch quest stretched out to epic proportions

And the period is intentional.

I’ve spoken to his manager about this at length (Bob’s manager was once my road manager, way back in the late 70s). Here’s the explanation.

Dylan loves touring, but he absolutely refuses to become a nostalgia act. He and his manager had long talks about it, and Bob figured the best way to avoid being a nostalgia act was to scare away the people who wanted endless replays of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man,’ and the easiest way to do that was to move radically away from all vestiges of his past.

He no longer plays guitar in concert. Until the last tour, he wouldn’t even play harmonica. And it’s worked - the old fans complain that he doesn’t sound like the idealized Dylan, and there’s a whole new crowd out there that is accepting of what he’s doing now. In short, the strategy worked.

I saw Dylan at Red Rocks back in 2007. He played guitar on the first tune “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35,” and that was it. He played keys for the rest of the show. No harmonica. He did play “Blowin’ In The Wind,” but other than that it was stuff from Time Out Of Mind, Love And Theft, and his new album at the time Modern Times. I thought the experience delightful, but the olds there were quite disappointed.

This tour, Dylan is playing pretty much all college campuses and smaller venues (with the exception of the wrap-up, which will be ten nights at the Beacon in NYC). They’re always looking to change up what they’re doing to keep it fresh. I’ve seen Bob four times in the past two years, and every time they’ve played new arrangements of his songs. I’m told that that’s what Bob does with his time off the road - getting ready for the next tour.

And even the concept of the ‘endless tour’ was formulated to break the music industry mold of recording an album, touring for 18 months, then waiting for a year before recording another album and starting the cycle again. Bob loves being on the road but hates doing the expected, and that guides everything he does and how he does it.

K Street’s newest star built business on dubious claims of Trump ties

washingtonpost.com

and read through this lengthy thread by some guy I’ve never heard of named Patrick Simpson, who has obviously done extensive research…

Thread: Something rotten is going on with this lobbyist -Michael Esposito.

threadreaderapp.com

and still can’t make heads nor tails of wtf is going on—the guy was supposedly a Dem lobbyist, then he claims close ties to the Trumps, who claim to have never heard of him, and he’s given big bucks to Trump and the Repubs and is on the Republican National Committee Chairman’s Advisory Board, but Ronna/RNC has put out a cease and desist letter.

My head is spinning. If anyone has the time and/or inclination to read this shit and come up with a simple explanation, I’m all ears. Or if not, not.

I know at this point I’m just the grizzled stranger in a goat hair cassock shrieking “Doom” while I point one crooked finger at nothing in particular in the middle of the town square and wave about a staff topped with a crucified pigeon in the other….

…but I swear it’s because they don’t have imaginations, and thus don’t understand lyrics, and thus only engage with media on an incredibly shallow “what is the hook what is the repeatable lyric that can be glossed as supporting my unexamined worldview.”

Like, bad, trite art and bad, trite reads of art just form a stink cloud around reactionaries, and I think it’s because they lack the ability to acknowledge things that don’t even indirectly critique their worldview. As such, all challenged art is threatening and offensive, and “good art” cleaves to convention not because conventions are established by the patina of skilled effort, but because what is familiar and established in the status quo does not make them threatened.

So when they like good art it’s because they’ve been told it’s good, and look no deeper into what an piece means (musical, visual, dramatic)…because the only value of art is as a mirror. Hence why so often they conjure with older art and artists (and genres, like classical music) as signs of their own taste and intelligence, but never engage deeply with one painter versus another, or a later period (once considered revolutionary and vulger) and an earlier one.

Another good discussion on the topic:

The Alarming Scope of the President’s Emergency Powers

This edifice of extraordinary powers has historically rested on the assumption that the president will act in the country’s best interest when using them. With a handful of noteworthy exceptions, this assumption has held up. But what if a president, backed into a corner and facing electoral defeat or impeachment, were to declare an emergency for the sake of holding on to power? In that scenario, our laws and institutions might not save us from a presidential power grab. They might be what takes us down.

re: #125 uriel

Very true. People often forgot that Lincoln suspended habeas corpus during the Civil War simply on his authority as President. Granted, the Civil War was an unprecedented emergency, but it nonetheless set a dangerous precedent.

And then during the Cold War, Congress authorized further emergency powers for the President, usually the result of concerns regarding the continuity of government in the aftermath of an all-out nuclear war - again, somewhat understandable. But now we have Trump, a man possessed of an autocratic nature, whose wildest dreams are to be some kind of king or emperor, able to order the deaths of his foes with the stroke of a pen or verbal command.

No one ever anticipated a would-be Duce sitting in the Oval Office, or at least, such concerns were dismissed out of hand owing to “American exceptionalism”.

Not sure how many Americans today are aware of how programmed they have been to be part of a throw-away culture.

Entertainment often is the means of programming.

And the worst are the big ticket items.

Networks like HGTV exist to spur consumerism.

Take a show like Property Brothers. So many episodes are about young couples wanting to tear down perfectly fine house interiors. Sure, there are episodes where the houses are indeed becoming derelict and a major renovation is required. But there are episodes where interiors have been kept in excellent condition, but are simply not fashionable, so they have to be destroyed.

Utterly hated by Luther as well. The sneakiest part is that it reads much like a synagogue sermon and is much more likely to refer to actually held beliefs of the early church than any of the psudeo-Pauline (Timothy, Titus, etc) epistles that tried (successfully, alas… :( ) to force a Roman cultural overlay on the previously more radical Christianity.

I know where you can borrow a scythe

apropos of the throwaway culture, think concentrates

look in a store at how many products are …something… mixed with water

all that water is trucked and transported around the country: excess packaging, fuel, bulk, etc

if many of these things were reduced back to concentrates (or never diluted), and properly packaged, there could be significant environmental and cost savings

(i am not a chemist)

Calvinism.

Wealth as an outward sign of Inner Grace (and Moral Superiority).

Poor people are poor because they are lazy or fritter their earnings away on alcohol, drugs, gambling or whoring…

We still buy into that belief big-time even when we don’t know where it comes from.

But see #93 above

There is a lot to both sides of this dispute: on the one hand the notion that merely going through the motions is useless if not accompanied by faith.

On the other hand, the idea is that True Faith will guide you to do the right things without needing a set of rituals to perform.

An omnipotent, omniscient God would know your true inner motivations anyway, right?

Yup. In the meantime they did stop us from having lunch in Juarez (1 to 5 hour border delays). Leaving the immediate border area, everyone on I10 was diverted through a fixed inspection station about 15 miles into Texas. The stop was cursory, probably because of the dogs and obvious high-tech sensors/imaging cameras.

They still have a lot of spare rebar in Juarez.

At the scrapyard, many of the cobalt pellets that had remained in the source capsule were scattered around when the teletherapy unit was dropped by a magnetic crane. The rest of the pellets stuck to the magnet and became mixed with steel leaving the scrapyard. Most of the latter went to two local foundries. One foundry melted down the steel to produce the pedestal-style table legs used in fast food restaurants. The other produced steel rods (re-bar) for reinforcing concrete.

Our original plan was to go to Agua Prieta near Ft Huachuca, but that crossing is smaller and more delay-prone than El Paso. We’re looking to avoid backtracking I10 next time, so following the coast and river to Big Bend might be a plus. We also have to start using parks more than commercial campgrounds.

When I was little, milk came in a glass bottle, orange juice came in a glass bottle, soft drinks came in glass bottles (this was before aluminum cans became popular), etc.

The throw-away container really became dominant just in our lifetimes.

Going back to the old ways may be better.

When I was a kid our milk came in glass bottles too, but not from a “store”. Ours would get delivered from a local dairy a couple miles up the road. By mid 70’s they had stopped delivery but you just had to bring your bottles back to the farm and exchange for filled ones. Still no throwing anything away. That farm closed sometime in the 80’s and most people were left with store bought throw-away containers.

Here is the exact bottles our milk came in. Hell I might have had my hand on this exact bottle at one time or another :-)

My kids still mess with me when I absently pull the milk jug out of the fridge and shake it. Reflex from before homogenization became big, mix the cream back into the milk.

Hate to mention it but this horse left the barn years ago. Long, long ago.

Ukrainian citizens have a tip or two to offer the American public at this moment of political crisis.

In eastern Europe, we paid a terrible price for having once allowed an unrestricted stream of big money into our political systems. Those Ukrainian fixers and thugs who terrorized my father later started buying up local elected officials. Then, together with other mobsters, they brought their “business” to the Ukrainian parliament, paying MPs to write laws to their liking. Then they decided that paying parliament members to do what they wanted wasn’t efficient—so those fixers and their bosses got themselves into parliament, through election rigging and vote buying. In the end, they ran the country exactly the way they ran their rackets. The two enterprises became inseparable. In our region, we call it a “captured state.”

Others not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word, and may have some common operations of the Spirit, yet not being effectually drawn by the Father, they neither will nor can truly come to Christ, and therefore cannot be saved: much less can men that do not receive the Christian religion be saved; be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature and the law of that religion they do profess.

Yep. Exactly that. The thing about the Calvinist god that you got to keep in mind is this: you can live like a saint, but if you’re not of God’s elect, chosen before the foundation of the world, and selected by God for heaven as an act of his supreme will, you are going to hell. That’s just single predestination (the Calvinist god picks the elect). Double predestination has the Calvinist god picking the elect AND the damned. In other words, some people were chosen by that god from the foundation of the world to be damned.

Ah nope, I’d rather go to hell than worship a god like that.

I live in rural NW PA. Many of our local stores still have hitching posts outside of them. They are not for rustic adornment, they are used. Our local Walmart put up a buggy barn for the Amish that shop to have a place to park their horses and buggy’s out of the elements.

mmmirele  Nov 2, 2019 • 10:28:47am

Normally I don’t make signs until Sunday morning, because I like to let my thoughts marinate, but I made signs this morning because some woman on my Trump-loving Congressman’s FB page is being an ass. She posted my picture from FB, so that everyone could “see the troll.” (My response: “59 and living my best life!”) So I made the signs and posted them to Rep. Biggs’ FB.

Sunday’s target is the Hillsong franchise in Mesa, Arizona. And the point is to let them know that their fearless leader, Brian Houston, is a man who covered up his father’s serial child sexual abuse. This didn’t come out until the Royal Commission inquiry in Australia in 2014. Here’s the latest story on this:

theguardian.com

I put that story on flyers I will have available to anyone who asks for details.

One of Frank Houston’s victims, Brent Sengstock, has come out publicly to discuss this. (He’d previously testified anonymously before the Royal Commission.) Sengstock has terminal stage 4 cancer. Sengstock’s Member of Parliament (Australia) is concerned Sengstock will not get justice before he dies.

theguardian.com

That was 11 months ago. Sengstock is still with us, but Brian Houston is such a #$%^!@^% he can’t apologize to a man dying of cancer.

ETA: There’s an ongoing controversy as to whether Aussie PM Scott Morrison tried to bring Houston over to the USA and have Houston go to a state dinner with Trump. Apparently someone at the State Department was on their game and told Morrison no, but Morrison is now denying that it ever happened. So that’s actually ONE good thing to come out of the shitshow that is the Trump administration.

British supermarket chain Asda is trying to force its workers into a really horrible contract. It cuts paid breaks, pay on bank holidays and pay for premium night shifts. Oh, and Asda says it’s raising wages by a whopping—get this—18p per hour. That works out to 23 cents American. Asda says it’s going to force its workers into the contract if they work next week, saying that working is acquiescence to the contract’s terms. Previously, Asda had said they would sack anyone who didn’t sign, but now, it’s the whole acquiescence thing.

Late capitalism SUCKS.

Garrett Epps:
“When one side of a political struggle has shown itself willing to commit crimes, collaborate with foreign powers, destroy institutions, lie brazenly about facts readily ascertainable to anyone, should the other side—can the other side—then pretend these things did not happen?”

Not much of a “debate” when one side has little/nothing else to resort to but denialism and childish insults.*
