Scaling the Border: The Not-So-Great Wall of America

Trump repeatedly bragged about how impenetrable his border wall was until this week when he finally conceded that “you can cut through any wall.” Oh also, an 8-year-old was able to climb over a replica of it. Mike Rubens reports.

This piece was produced by Mike Rubens with Grace Leeson, edited by Andrew Mendelson, and graphics by Ed Mundy.

So I promised I wouldn’t bring this up too often but I got threaded after five minutes.

My favorite charity online marathon event of the year started this morning.

Desert Bus For Hope is a fundraiser where a Canadian internet comedy troupe spend a week playing the most boring video game ever - continuously until the donations don’t meet the (slowly escalating) hourly goals. It’s a relatively friendly and affirming place, that tends to get progressively sillier as everyone gets settled into their shifts for the long (150+ hours) haul. Effectively it’s a gaming (tabletop/MTG/video gaming/Twitch)-themed variety show, with giveaways and auctions of various sorts.

desertbus.org
twitch.tv

The money goes directly to Child’s Play, which provides video games and other toys to children’s hospitals and (more recently) domestic violence shelters worldwide.

Sorry for the minor spam.

Temperament test: How long could you avoid wanting to punch Florida Man?

THE CHAIRMAN: You’re not a member of this committee. This is conducted in closed session. You’re not permitted to be here.

GAETZ: I’m on the Judiciary Committee.

THE CHAIRMAN: Mr. Gaetz, please absent yourself from the committee. It’ s the ruling of the chair you’re not permitted to be here. PIease leave the committee.

MR. JORDAN: Mr. Chairman, I think in the 20 hours of testimony we’ve heard in the two previous interviews, there have been a grand total of 2 Members of Congress present. I don’t think it’s going to hurt to have a 3rd Member actually hear something that, in my judgment, all 435 Members of Congress should be entitled to hear.

THE CHAIRMAN: Mr. Gaetz, you’re not a member of the three designated committees that are participating in this interview. You’re not permitted to be here. That is the ruling of the chair, and you are required to leave.

MR. GAETZ: Do you have a rule that you’re able to cite for that?

THE CHAIRMAN: I am citing the House rules and the deposition rules. You are not permitted to be here.

MR. GAETZ : Which rule?

THE CHAIRMAN: Mr. Gaetz, you are simply delaying the procedures in violation of the rules. Please absent yourself.

MR. GAETZ : Which rule?

THE CHAIRMAN: Mr. Gaetz, why don’t you take your spectacle outsjde? This is not how we conduct ourselves in this committee.

MR. GAETZ: I’ve seen how you’ve conducted yourself in this committee, and I’d like to be here to observe.

THE CHAIRMAN: We’ll wait until Mr. Gaetz leaves before we begin. I do want to say that thjs dilatory tactic will come out of the minority’s time for questioning.

MR. GAETZ: This isn’t dilatory. You can begin any time you like.

THE CHAIRMAN: We’ re going to begin the clock. This will come out of the minority’s time for questions.

MR. J0RDAN: Well, I had a statement I wanted to get to when you interrupted me.

THE CHAIRMAN: We’re not back on the record.

10:43 a .m.

THE CHAIRMAN: Okay. Let’s go back on the record.

MR. BITAR: Hi. As the general counsel of the House Intelligence Committee, I’m relaying the view of the Parliamentarian, which was just relayed over the phone, to both Members and staff of the minority committees as well as the majority. The Parliamentarian made clear that the House deposition regulations and the language used therein has always been construed as meaning members of the committees undertaking the joint investigation and not members of other committees who may wish to attend for other reasons, and, therefore, they are not allowed to participate in the deposition itself or be present. Thank you.

MR. JORDAN: Chairman, could I just add one thing?

THE CHAIRMAN: Yes.

MR. J0RDAN: The Parliamentarian was also clear that there is no precedent, no basis for docking anyone’s time, that this was a legitimate question and not dilatory in any sense.

THE CHAIRMAN: Mr. Jordan, you have an opening statement?

MR. J0RDAN: I do.

Trump’s bullshit was called by many people…. and 8 year olds.

Yeah, that sums this up.

Trump is spending $10 billion on a wall that wont stop anyone from climbing over it, cutting through it, etc., but the military could certainly use a couple billion that was taken from its infrastructure improvement budget to rebuild damaged air bases in Florida, upgrade housing and base school facilities nationwide, and otherwise devote more money to immigration judges to clear the backlog instead of pushing this clear white nationalist value signaling bulkshit.

seems to me (ianal) they are saying a mcghan resolution wont cover bolton’s situation and so the house should reinstitute the kupperman case

my take:
bolton doesnt work for the admin any more
there’s not much they can do to him administratively (im guessing)

im pretty sure (nothing i can cite) that testifying anyway when the prez claims exeutive privilege, absolute priv, double secret priv etc —- well there’s no legal penalty for doing so

- and no doubt boltons lawyers know how long litigating yet another case could take - ie months
- so why drop hints today and publicly

the way my layman’s eyes see it,
for him to testify they’d have to accept the mcghan ruling which hopefully comes soon and it goes for the house. that letter is saying no.

and restarting kupperman or another suit probably wouldnt be settled until likely the impeachment train has left the station - it’s way to late and he becomes less than critical or actually totally irrelevant

It’s like talking to your right wing friend or family member that gets his talking points from Ben Shapiro and thinks he understands politics and is someohw profound. Nope dude. What the parties were 100 plus years ago matters a damn. What they are now when your party’s idea of a model SCOTUS judge shat on the VRA and when you have people in the SEnate like Rand Paul who unironically employed Confederate Avengers. And you have a President a President who thinks people marching to protect the CSA flag were on par with people wanting it removed after a member of the latter group was killed, you don’t get to go “Oh well we were the good guys in 1865.” That’s great. Why didn’t your party stay the good guys.

I mean do conservatives not fucking think African-Americans see how Obama was treated by conservatives? Even if you disagree with Obama’s ideological agenda, you have to acknowledge he did break down something that a lot of people thought they’d never see. And that’s something that frustrates me about Obama’s detractors throughout the ideological spectrum. No appreciation of how much Obama had to do not to step on eggshells to piss the wrong people off. But even with that, Obama is still the best president of my life and honestly in the past 50 years.

I don’t know.

And for those who aren’t sure who Rebekah Mercer is, she’s a link to Cambridge Analytica, Trumpworld, and Bannon. She’s the one who introduced Bannon to Trump.

also…

Rebekah and her dad donated $250 million to either the campaign or associated super-pacs. They owe $7 billion (yes, billion with a B) in back taxes, and they expected their pet president to get them a significant write-down on a settlement. Huge ROI.

what if the story he wants to tell is exactly the opposite to what we’re expecting, what if he’s planning to exonerate the President with new “background facts” that totally change the story.

He wants to say these things in open session. And since there’ll be no previous record of any testimony to contradict himself, he’ll say “hey, you wanted me to testify, you dragged me in there…” and that’ll give him more credibility.

we have some effed up jurisprudence in this country

- the actual abuser (man) does 2 years, gets a 10 year suspended sentence
- the mother gets 30 years for ‘failure to protect” the children. does 15 years.

An Oklahoma mother who had been imprisoned for 15 years for failing to report to authorities that her boyfriend was abusing her children was freed from custody on Friday.

Tondalao Hall was sentenced in 2006 to 30 years in prison under Oklahoma’s “failure to protect” law after her then-boyfriend, Robert Braxton Jr., abused two of their children so severely, at least one had multiple broken bones, according to Hall’s attorney, Megan Lambert of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma. Hall had already been in jail for two years when she received her sentence.

Braxton, meanwhile, pleaded guilty to abusing the children, but was given no additional time behind bars: He received a 10-year suspended sentence and was released on probation after having served his two years in jail, Lambert said.

As Turkish forces invaded northern Syria in early October, supporters of the offensive launched a different kind of campaign — online.

Dozens of images claiming to show Turkey’s soldiers cuddling babies, feeding hungry toddlers and carrying elderly women spread across Twitter and Instagram where they were liked, retweeted and viewed thousands of times thanks also to popular hashtags.

Except some of the photos weren’t of Turkish soldiers. None of them were recent and some had been taken in parts of Syria unconnected to the invasion - even in other parts of the world.

Sooty is a British Icon of sorts….

Sooty is a glove puppet television, stage, comic book and film character, who is a small yellow male bear with black ears and nose who likes to perform magic tricks and play practical jokes. Although mute to the audience, he is said to be able to communicate by ‘whispering’ in the ear of his handler. He was created by Harry Corbett in 1948. Sooty debuted on local television in 1952, and the children’s television shows that bear his name have continued in various forms since 1955.

According to Guinness World Records, together they are the longest-running “non consecutive” children’s programme in the UK, with 857 episodes being aired as of 30 October 2018.[1] Blue Peter holds the record for the world’s longest running children’s programme. [2]

I hope they call Nikki on this bullshit.

And on all of her other bullshit (although I don’t think there’s time enough for that.)

Nikki wants to be the star of every show. One of my favorite tales is her inserting herself into the whole Mark Sanford/Appalachian Trail story. According to Nikki’s self-aggrandizing memoir:

“The governor was in Argentina,” he said. “We just got a call from a news station asking if you were with him…” And I thought with horror about how I was now being dragged into this scandal.

But, according to people who live in reality…

after having spoken with several reporters and political insiders, there is reason to question Haley’s account of the events mentioned above. Of the reporters that I spoke to, none of them contacted the Haley campaign about this alleged smear. For most, the first time that they had heard this anecdote was when Politico recently released an excerpt containing Haley’s parking-lot claim. The same goes for the political insiders. The news that Haley’s car was parked next to Sanford’s during the whole Appalachian Trail fiasco was, well, news to them.

Super 8 is a low-temperature sodium hypochlorite solution registered with the Environmental Protection Agency that is used as a sanitizer in the food processing and food service industry, according to Auto-Chlor System, a company that provides cleaning products and services to commercial kitchens and laundry and housekeeping operations.

A deal that wont get the US back to the situation before Trump started his idiotic trade war.

So the damage continues to pile up.
So Americans continue to pay the tariffs Trump’s imposed because it’s paid by Americans who import the goods, not china.
So American businesses suffer because of the retaliatory tariffs on exports to China, so farmers and certain businesses have lost significant revenue and farmers have required massive bailouts or have already gone bankrupt.

Nope. Nothing surprises me.

“Navy Rear Adm. Ronny Jackson is considering a run for Congress in Texas,” Roll Call reports.

“Jackson was the chief White House physician in 2018, when President Trump nominated him to be Veterans Affairs secretary. But Jackson withdrew his nomination from consideration amid allegations that he abused alcohol and mishandled prescription drugs, although he said at the time the charges were ‘completely false and fabricated.’”

JFC…

The Spay-Neuter Action Project called on residents Friday to help identify the driver who hit the organization’s mobile spay-and-neuter clinic and left without providing insurance information.

The organization’s “Neuter Scooter” was providing spay and neuter services to residents in Otay Mesa Nov. 5 and 6. Between 5 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6 a.m. the next morning, someone collided with the vehicle, damaging its rear compartment door and knocking surgical supplies off its shelves, according to the organization.

“We are unable to open or close the outer compartment, and that interferes with our mobility,” clinic manager Michelle Altenhoff said.

The responsible party left a note, reading, in part, “only scratched you, ended up doing more damage to my car than yours” while failing to provide their name or insurance information.

According to SNAP Director Dorell Sackett, the organization is now saddled with an insurance deductible it cannot afford; the organization already loses money by providing free spay/neuter clinics.

The organization asked residents who may have information to come forward, particularly, the responsible driver. Residents can contact SNAP at[no phone numbers allowed].

SNAP has also set up a GoFundMe page, to help cover its deductible. The campaign had raised $280 of its $500 goal since launching Friday morning.

bold is my emphasis.

She’s a great singer. Came in third on Idol. Should have won, but the old lady fans of Idol always power voted for the boys. They changed the voting a few years ago, so women can actually win now. But no one cares about Idol. :D

Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, and Jordin Sparks were men?

Early on, the middle aged lady Idol fans weren’t organized. Then they got organized and it was predictable who would win for years. Post Jordin, it was all white guys with guitars.

And please don’t call me out on Idol stuff. I was a stan of the greatest degree for years. Do know what I’m talking about.

I’m a fan of Richard Thompson’s somewhat sinister version of that song.

The Anonymous White House Book-Writer Can Anonymously Bite Me
I am not interested in someone’s heartfelt account of their near-collision with actual integrity. Charlie Pierce:

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Anonymous can bite me. I have no intention of shelling out a dime to read about how someone almost ran into the burning house to save the baby, or about how someone almost gave up their seat in the lifeboat when the great ship went down, or about how someone almost dove into a freezing river to save a busload of nuns, or, for that matter, about how someone almost decided not to be a part of the most monstrous executive administration since the (un)death of Vlad The Impaler. I am not interested in someone’s heartfelt account of their near-collision with actual integrity. I decline to be fascinated by the tale of how someone nearly ran into courage on the street but had to catch a bus instead. Like I said, Anonymous can anonymously bite me.
