[Embedded content]

Decided I needed a chuckle, so I read the op-ed. And it’s pretty much what you expect, namely the latest attempt at formulating a “defense” for Trump’s actions. Now the argument is that clear efforts to undermine career diplomats in pursuit of a fucked-in-the-head policy where a president leverages foreign aid in exchange for assistance in his reelection effort is simply a “difference of opinion.” That what Kent and Taylor described was not a deliberate attempt to conceal the extortion of a foreign ally, but instead two men expressing opinions that Trump was acting “irregularly” which is totally cool under the Constitution.

A couple of points from this post:

1. It’s Brit Hume (so immediately dismissable)
2. It’s Brit Hume citing John Podhoretz (even more-dismissable)
3. “Clear wrongdoing” that MIGHT be impeachable?? WTF does he think “might” be
enough? Shooting-on-5th-Avenue?? Maybe??
4. While I have, so far, been impressed with the way Adam Schiff has been running the
impeachment hearing, why the hell did he allow the Republicans to put up those
asinine posters behind their seats for the first day of public hearings? I realize
they’re there to look “bold” for the Fox News droolers, but they really look
undignified and tawdry (GOP so not news). Maybe the Dems ought to bring in a
small version of the “Baby Trump” balloon and have it drift around the ceiling of the
hearing room….?

I saw over on Balloon Juice earlier (btw, the new site is up and running limping) that a bunch of the commentariat were getting nervous over the fact that the Roger Stone jury has gone into deliberations this morning (c. 10:30 ET?), and the fact that they didn’t pop out with a verdict immediately is giving rise to the apprehension that the ratfucker might skate after all.

Myself, I tend to think not, but who knows?

This isn’t about policy disagreements. The official policy never changed, that’s what the testimony yesterday was all about. Trump was putting pressure on Zelinski outside the official channels and for his own personal political gain. If the official policy had changed, Trump or anyone in the chain of command could have said “we are going a different way” but they didn’t. Instead, they extorted an ally for personal political gain while endangering the American interests and the interests of our allies.

There is still good information out there.

Remember that people in the former Eastern Bloc were and still are much more critical of the information they get from any source.

But they quickly recognized that we will readily believe anything that corresponds to our bias and spread it without question

The decline in journalism means that networks are not going to waste money on investigative reporting when they can get an intern to mine Twitter for them…

And again, when “Trending on Twitter” became a news item in and of itself, I began to despair for the future of the Republic. We may live to see its collapse.

Trump was putting pressure on Zelinski outside the official channels and for his own personal political gain.

and it was not directed at “fighting corruption”, it was directed personally against a political opponent.

Trump lacked the subtlety to wrap a layer of “policy” around it and press for a “crackdown” in which the Bidens might feature prominently.

The city of Grand Rapids, Michigan, will pay $190,000 to the U.S.-born military veteran who was racially profiled by police and then turned over to federal immigration agents and detained for days despite showing proof of his citizenship. “The Grand Rapids City Commission approved the settlement Tuesday for Jilmar Ramos-Gomez, 28, who was born and raised in Michigan,” The Detroit News reports.

The veteran, who has post-traumatic stress disorder, was arrested in 2018 after setting off a fire alarm in a hospital, but it was police Capt. Curt VanderKooi who caused him to end up in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody for three days, emailing an agency official about him—“loco,” or crazy, he called the veteran in the subject line—and asking, “Could you please check his status?”

Ramos-Gomez had already been trying to tell officials his status—in fact, he was carrying his U.S. passport at the time, but it didn’t matter to officials. All they saw was a brown face and a Spanish name. “Body cam footage of Ramos-Gomez’s arrest obtained by The Detroit News through Freedom of Information Act requests shows Grand Rapids police officers were aware of Ramos-Gomez’ citizenship status and military service before placing him in custody.”

So, is this part of all the winning we would be sick of by now?

Erdogan visited Trump at the White House on Wednesday, and at a joint press conference afterward he let slip that the letter had been “re-presented” to Trump that afternoon.

“We gave back the letter that we have received,” he emphasized in closing.

Assuming it’s the original copy, Turkish officials had to fish it out of the trash first before they could send it back. The letter was received so poorly Erdogan reportedly threw it away, according to the BBC.

Fake tough guy gets his pants pulled down in front of the whole world.

If Trump were capable of shame, he would be humiliated by this. Then again, if he were capable of shame he wouldn’t have sent the letter, or pulled our troops out of the region, or well, be who he is…

Not my area of expertise, but from what little reading I’ve done on it, I suspect the only person who should have the name is the IG and maybe the committee (there’s a system whereby the whistleblower can go to Congress if the IG and department head don’t pass the report on to Congress).

That said, I suspect that in many cases it’s fairly easy for people in the know to figure out who the whistleblower is.

I’d word the question less towards whether he can work with them and more towards *why* he expects that they would work with him given their behavior patterns over the past decade or more.

Make it less a character question about himself and more of a knowledge question and acceptance understanding question about the GOP.

Dems need to run up the score. Win as many states as possible, win in Congress, cut off all potential arguments he might have. The bigger the win the less potential for blood there will be. It’s going to be ugly no matter what because that’s just Trump’s style. But if he loses Florida, Arizona, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania - and loses by a lot in those states - then no tantrum he throws will matter.

One wonders where Big Business is going to stand on this issue?

What happens when a student who graduated from medical school ships a crate of tainted drugs because they prayed really, really hard over them, and that should have purified the heart medications? (1)

I’d say that the superstitious peasants who vote for shit like this deserve to die writhing in agony because their meds are filled with spoiled long-chain proteins, but the problem is that the tainted drugs/poorly designed roads/fragile electrical wiring will take decent people as well as the guilty & stupid.(2)

Boy, this will generate some *huge* kickback really quickly. Like the various professional institutions decertifying degrees from Ohio universities. Who’d hire an engineer from a Ohio university when it’d be unclear that their work would be scientifically sound?

My daughter has a civil engineering degree from Youngstown State.

First guess is that Big Business hopes that the laws regarding purity of medicine, etc. and liability for failing same will have been gutted by then.

Second guess is that a large enough death toll followed by an investigation might result in some of the laws getting reinstated given a large enough public outcry. Pretty much took things like this (and effective investigative journalism backed by media) to get the various consumer protection laws enacted in the first place.

And the various fields have a sort of “old boy network” where the various universities have reputations about the quality of the graduates they put out. My father was a mechanical engineer who worked for ALCOA for ~30 years. And the school you graduated from was noted with new hires. I recall for certain my father saying that engineers from Case & Western were generally not as good.

And given that the engineers have their professional societies and conventions I expect there are opportunities for them to mix and compare notes (so to speak).

I also note that in a lot of technical fields the school ceased to matter once you had a few years of actual job experience. One of the best programmers I ever worked with had a biology degree from somewhere in Florida.

Ugly? Definitely: if for no other reason that it’s Trump.

Bloody? I tend to doubt it: for all the bellicose bluster, The Donald is a craven coward at heart. I think he’ll follow his usual pattern: make a huge hysterical fuss, then fold: and crawl off to Mar-a-Lago or wherever (maybe some place with no extradition treaty) to spend his retirement years dodging process servers, tweeting out stupid nasty bullshit (just because), and running grifts on the rubes, again, just because….

More frightening, I think, will be what an ousted Trump and GOP are likely to try to “accomplish” in the lame-duck Congress before (as we fervently) the blue-wave 118th takes over in January, 2020.

3 students killed in California school shooting, 16-year-old suspect in hospital in ‘grave condition’

Two 14-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl are dead and two other students are injured after a classmate opened fire at a high school in Southern California Thursday morning, sheriff’s officials said.

The 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody and is in the hospital in “grave condition” from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

Detectives reviewed video from the scene which showed the gunman in the quad of Saugus High School in Santa Clarita when he took a gun from his backpack, shot five people and then shot himself in the head, authorities said. The early morning school shooting was on the suspect’s birthday, authorities said.

Instead, students are graded on substance and relevance.

Not to mention that this issue has been litigated all the way up the chain, and (unless I’m mistaken) the lower courts have consistently ruled against Trump in pretty certain terms. SCOTUS would have to not only go against a series of (IIRC) solidly based denials in the present case, - BUT (and again, correct me if I’m wrong) also have to overturn the precedent they articulated in the Bill Clinton witch-hunt case 21 (?) years ago.

I doubt it, just because Roberts takes the long view. I’ll actually be surprised if it gets taken up at all, Thomas is the only conservative nearing retirement who might be eager to put his name on a decision totally inoculating Trump from all investigation. The others probably view the case as radioactive and would be wise not to touch it at all.

215
KGxvi  Nov 14, 2019 • 3:05:40pm

The only possible distinction that a court might draw between the Clinton case and the Trump case is that Clinton involved a civil claim while Trump involves a criminal case. And there’s an argument that locking up a president under state law would interfere with his constitutional duties. Then again, we’ve got a 25th Amendment to cure such a situation, at least in theory.

As I mentioned above, Thomas was part of the unanimous decision in the Clinton case. Plus judges tend to be loathe to give the other branches power at the sake of the judiciary. So ruling that the president isn’t subject to subpoena probably isn’t going over well with anyone in the building.

More to the point, this current case only involves the right to investigate and gather facts pursuant to a possible indictment that may or may not come later, after the President has left office. As such it sidesteps the question of total immunity from prosecution.

I know. I still think Gorsuch and Kavanaugh would be wise not to put themselves in a position where they have to write or join an opinion either way. If they grant Trump immunity they’ll have painted themselves into a corner vis-a-vis the Executive Branch for the rest of their time on the court, and if they join an opinion against him they’ll have avoidably alienated a lot of their financially lucrative allies. Not granting cert at all is the smart long term play here.

Another reason that Kavanaugh and Gorsuch would be wise to not grant cert is that while it only takes four Justices to grant a hearing those same four Justices don’t have the power to slow walk the docket. If they don’t have Roberts on board he and the liberal Justices can make sure the case gets fast tracked and heard immediately. Which means it all gets dealt with well before the election and killing the actual point of forcing a hearing.

It’s not law yet. It’s possible that the Ohio Senate will modify the provisions to clarify the circumstances in which a student can use religious justifications for their answers (which should be limited to theology, philosophy, or perhaps some English classes)

It’s brain dead Ohio which means it will pass and the asshole Governor will sign it into law.

Then the ACLU will have to step in.

Thomas would change his thinking for a republican. And he’s jump through and over every obstacle. Party over country. Always.

Thomas would vote to re-institute black slavery. I believe that if the SC decides to hear Trump’s appeal that will mean the fix is already in. Choosing not to hear it is the safe play here.

Nikki gets all kinds of special appointments with no background
Nikki runs for governor; Sarah Palin helps
Nikki has many ethics violations—skates due to idiotic SC Republicans
Nikki says the confederate flag is not a problem, then claims credit for taking it down (this will be a long one)
Nikki gets a cabinet appointment so Foghorn Leghorn can run as incumbent
Nikki makes a fool of herself at the UN

Hooked a live one. This is obvious Bircher cant (any mention of the Federal Reserve automatically triggers Bircher alarms) but it is deep membership stuff, normally not discussed in public. The poster is likely a non-member who has stumbled onto this and lacks the incentive to keep it internal.
Like any cult, the JBS uses an ideological onion structure , with members introduced to progressively deeper layers as they demonstrate their reliability and commitment. Today, the JBS is obviously completely on board with the Kremlin influence program. Given its famously extreme anti-communism, this has been the subject of much ironic commentary in recent years.
I am beginning to suspect, though, that the JBS has ALWAYS been a Russian and Soviet asset. Consider: Its anti-communism did not have enough credibility to harm Soviet interests, while its extreme isolationism could definitely help those interests. During the Vietnam War, it sided with the left in opposing the war. It is famous for its campaign against the UN, but it has also consistently opposed US membership in NATO and all other international alliances, even including the Rio Pact with Latin American countries and the NORAD agreement with Canada. Though not an armed militia, its conspiracy theories have played a central role in the ideology of the militia right and have gone a long way toward the Soviet/Russian goal of pitting the American people against their own government.

You can also remind them that was the name of the pro-Nazi American group that opposed our involvement in WWII (before Pearl Harbor). IIRC, one of the early Bill Kristol attacks against Trump was that the Trump campaign was recycling a pro-Nazi slogan.
