Wasn’t there an extension until December? Or is it waiting for Trump to sign it?

Here’s a rundown of who Sondland implicated in his testimony on Wednesday: (via huffpo)

― Trump
― Giuliani
― Vice President Mike Pence
― Secretary of State Mike Pompeo
― White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney
― Energy Secretary Rick Perry
former special envoy to Ukraine Kurt Volker
Perry’s chief of staff, Brian McCormack
― Former national security adviser John Bolton
― Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.)

“Again, everyone was in the loop,” Sondland said.

The testimony today and the flailing Republican attempts to defend Trump have been enjoyable and it is so gratifying to see the corruption and graft dragged out into the light.

But (I and don’t want to piss on anyone’s cheerios here) it’s also pretty meaningless.

Articles of Impeachment at this point are pretty much a foregone conclusion, but so is Trump’s acquittal in the Senate. There would need to be 20 Republicans with the courage and integrity to publicly stand up and vote against him (and that means pissing off the gullible, atavistic mob who they need voting for them to keep their own positions). There simply aren’t that many. Years of gerrymandering and a race to the bottom on the right have bred integrity and courage right out of the DNA of the Republican party. It has no heart, no soul, no values left other than IGMFY.

What’s happening now needs to be done and I applaud the Dems for pursuing it even if it does backfire on them electorally but I’ve seriously tempered my expectations as to the eventual outcome.

As you say, impeachment has to be tried, no matter how unlikely the Senate is to remove Trump from office.

However, consequence-free Senate acquittal of Trump is looking unlikely. Some of those GOP Senators are from purple states where the votes of Trumpist true believers aren’t enough to keep them in office.

McConnell will cheerfully get rid of Trump if he thinks he has to to preserve his Senate majority. Let the deep red states replace any Senate ‘traitors’ in the GOP primaries — those new idiots would still be Republican Senators contributing to McConnell’s majority.

Two months ago, people on this site were freaking out that Democrats were never going to bring impeachment to even an investigation. Now, we’re watching the poll numbers indicate that the hearings are necessary and that he should be removed. The Republicans are making fools of themselves, and it’s starting to become obvious that they don’t even care about the military after threats on Vindeman. The inquiries are dominating the news. And Bevin lost in KY.

Just because it’s not going to finish doesn’t make it seriously important. Among other things, it’s showing the world a lot of us care about the rule of law.

True. I see no downside to Democrats at all. They need to do their jobs and stick to the rules and roles. Schiff and the Dem team have been on point. This will win votes if any can be won.

The Banana Republicans only have downside risk here. The Senate trial is going to be prone with risk. Unlike the House hearings being run by Schiff, a Senate trial will actually be run by SCOTUS Roberts. I don’t think Graham will have full reign to make it a total shit show.

Some familiar names crop in this NBC story on the hoax.
As Sondland testified, a misleading Ukraine story spread among conservatives on social media

Within an hour of ZeroHedge publishing its story, the claim of an indictment had been spread on Twitter by tens of thousands of users. According to results on the Twitter analytics tool Hoaxy, the indictment claims were propelled by Charlie Kirk, the leader of the conservative group Turning Point USA, as well as a conspiracy theorist, Jack Posobiec, and the anonymous @BreakingNLive, an account that has become notorious for spreading misinformation. The account also boasts of being retweeted by the president.

More than 10,000 users engaged with the ZeroHedge story on Facebook, which was shared to dozens of pages that totaled more than 3 million followers.

One minute before the ZeroHedge article was published, the anonymous account that inspired the QAnon conspiracy theory — generally known as “Q” — linked to the same Interfax-Ukraine article.

The reasons I asked the question above is because war crimes and crimes against humanity just about always cause large amounts of displacement because of the fear they instill in a civilian population.

My tinfoil goes as follows:

Shortly prior, to, and during the initial stages of, the refugee wave from Syria, rumors began coming about Russian Federation involvement in Syria, then people started fleeing head over heels.
The refugee wave gave a boost to various alt-right outfits across the West.

Odd factoid: via the Wiki on Bill Clinton’s impeachment in 1998: of the 100 Senators who voted in that trial, 14 are still serving in the Senate (7 D, 7 R).
And of the 13 House Managers, 2 (Sensenbrenner and Chabot) are still serving. Another, Lindsey Graham, is… well, we know…

I think that’s good foil. Population displacement is a familiar strategy of war. Usually the goals are operational, to interfere with enemy logistics and movement by putting a panic-stricken horde of civilians on the road. In this case, with a worldwide psychological and media war, the objectives are strategic, to empower friendly media (the far right) and weaken those of the enemy (the progressive world).

I wouldn’t toss the sombrero aluminio just yet. Maybe the Syrian refugee wave wasn’t originally “intentional”, but it has certainly had the hell exploited out of it (or more precise it was hell that was exploited) by various (bad) actors both West and East.

re: #89 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

I think that’s good foil. Population displacement is a familiar strategy of war. Usually the goals are operational, to interfere with enemy logistics and movement by putting a panic-stricken horde of civilians on the road. In this case, with a worldwide psychological and media war, the objectives are strategic, to empower friendly media (the far right) and weaken those of the enemy (the progressive world).

re: #88 sagehen

Russia is really good at chess. They think and plan and act many moves ahead.

My thoughts exactly. Just wanted a second opinion. I find it deeply disturbing that the Russian Federation is sliding into authoritarianism and totalitarianism of the Soviet Union (the overt ideology being different this time). Another thing is the return of certain tactics, such as using proxies and seemingly independent forces to do things, which we have seen in Ukraine already, and it seems they are up to that in Syria as well.

Worst thing is that documents tend to be forged to prove “innocence”, so that one particular event will officially be blamed on “rebels” and appear in the archives as:

1944-07-07: Attacked garrison at Seitajärvi. Killed 94 enemy soldiers.

Despite the garrison obviously being untouched, and if memory serves me right, due to circumstances definetively not a palatable target for the Soviet Union.

Oh, and 80 years ago, give or take a day or so, a certain war began with a false flag attack, The Shelling of Mainila.

Mark Twain was right. “History doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme”.

Vindman is telling Fox to retract the espionage story or face consequences:

A lawyer for Colonel Vindman, the National Security Council’s Ukraine expert, sent a warning letter to Fox News on Wednesday seeking a retraction or correction of an October segment hosted by one of the network’s biggest personalities, Laura Ingraham, which baselessly suggested that the colonel, a decorated Iraq war veteran, might be guilty of espionage.

The letter sent by David Pressman, a partner at Boies Schiller Flexner, the law firm run by David Boies, also highlighted inflammatory statements made on the network by others, including President Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr., who has repeatedly attacked Colonel Vindman, and Tucker Carlson, another prominent Fox host.

Not to be salacious but damn, really?

DNA testing has established, “with scientific certainty,” that Hunter Biden is the father of an Arkansas baby, the Arkansas Democrat Gazette reports.

Biden, son of former vice president Joe Biden, had denied being the father but “is not expected to challenge the results of the DNA test or the testing process.”

It’s a minor point compared to the latest eruptions from the Marmalade Shartcannon, but WTF is with official “Aboard Air Force One” stationery?

Way too many parts of the system are designed to make a US president into at least a demigod.

thecommodore  Nov 20, 2019 • 5:58:01pm

538’s average on impeachment polling has three averages:

On whether to begin the impeachment process (which has already begun, but they began tracking this in March): Support 51%, Don’t Support 44.4%.

On whether to impeach and remove: Support 46.5%, Don’t Support 45.5%

All polls combined: Support 47.4%, Don’t Support 45.6%

In spite of all that has been revealed since the inquiry began, the needle hasn’t moved much. In fact, it has trended slightly towards “Don’t support.”

What will it take?
