I wonder if Nunes and the other two goobers will have the nerve to actually ask Hill a question. I’m seeing nothing but long rants in the next 45 minutes.

So, the GOP has 3 posters behind them.

Only things I can make out from them are 101, 8, and 0.

To me that reflects: 101 - the number of charges/counts that Trump could face looking at the totality of circumstances and all the crimes committed since entering office.

8 - the combined IQ of the GOP panel

0 - the amount of credibility the GOP has on anything.

IIRC, the 8 is “Number of days since Schiff said he did not know the identity of the whistleblower” and the is now “Number of days since Schiff followed House rules.”

Really excellent framing/organization of witnesses by House Democrats on the committee this week. Hill’s testimony will reverberate throughout the weekend.

Oh, and the fat Trump dickhead on CNN (David Urban) came up with a new BS excuse for why Trump released the aid so suddenly: (paraphrased) “It was about to expire! End of the fiscal year!”

Facebook is actively enabling white nationalist outlets including VDare and Red Ice TV to use its platform to distribute white nationalist propaganda.

They have played a key role in trying to convince us that Fascism and White Supremacism are simply viewpoints along the accepted political spectrum instead of something that is anathema to this country and everything it stands for and has fought to overcome.

Every single state department employee has impressed me, with the exception of Sondland and Morrison. And partially Volker - he was obviously regretting a few choices without really owning up to them.

And even the less impressive people were unanimously fighting to get the aid to Ukraine. Only Trump and I suppose Giuliani thought that was a good idea.

Ellie Mystal pointed out that Castor’s in the unenviable position of having to defend the indefensible and that this format means he’s got to fill up the balance of his time even if he spends 30 seconds getting the soundbite he needs. If he cedes his time, it shows that the GOP has nothing, so he’s left trying to weasel and worm his way through his time period.

The GOP case is that bad. And it gets worse with each successive GOPer asking questions of these witnesses.

Yeah, I am actually reluctantly impressed with Castor for maintaining a semblance of professionalism. He has nothing, and he can’t create it, but he isn’t beclowing himself that way Nunes is. He also isn’t helping Trump that I can see - but is there really any helping him? I can’t see that there is.

52
lawhawk  Nov 21, 2019 • 10:49:05am

Hill just blew up Morrison’s claims about Lt. Col. Vindman, and also the GOP claim that Vindman was incompetent or somehow wasn’t right for the job.

What Hill said in her review of Vindman’s competencies was that he was highly competent, but that his skills were best suited for a role in the military (which is highly structured), and not a highly charged political environment (which can be chaotic). That’s a honest assessment - after all, not everyone is built for particular types of scenarios. Some thrive in rabid political situations, while others need different environments to thrive.

I haven’t read the whole piece, and I missed it as a detail about Biden, but he had a stutter as a child, and that’s probably what some were seeing last night:

Detroit was Biden’s chance to regain control of the narrative. And then something else happened. The candidates were talking about health care. At first, Biden sounded strong, confident, presidential: “My plan makes a limit of co-pay to be One. Thousand. Dollars. Because we—”

He stopped. He pinched his eyes closed. He lifted his hands and thrust them forward, as if trying to pull the missing sound from his mouth. “We f-f-f-f-further
support—” He opened his eyes. “The uh-uh-uh-uh—” His chin dipped toward his chest. “The-uh, the ability to buy into the Obamacare plan.” Biden also stumbled when trying to say immune system.

Fox News edited these moments into a mini montage. Stifling laughter, the host Steve Hilton narrated: “As the right words struggled to make that perilous journey from Joe Biden’s brain to Joe Biden’s mouth, half the time he just seemed to give up with this somewhat tragic and limp admission of defeat.”

Meanwhile, Dave Fahrenthold is digging into Trump financials as always, and found some weirdness about costs he wants the Secret Service to pay.

For instance, a single day trip to a Trump golf resort and Trump charged the Secret Service $28k.

How do you get to $28k for a single day at a golf resort? What was that money spent on?

A golf cart rental is what? $100-200 for a round? It sounds like Trumpworld was padding the billing to maximize their profits on taxpayer dime. Again.

“It was a historic moment in April 2017 when Supreme Court justice Anthony M. Kennedy presided over the ceremonial Rose Garden swearing-in for the court’s new member, Neil M. Gorsuch: the first time a sitting justice was joined on the nation’s highest court by one of his former law clerks,” the Washington Post reports.

“But a secret meeting moments later in the White House was just as significant, according to a new book by Ruth Marcus.”

Kennedy requested a private moment with President Trump to deliver a message about the next Supreme Court opening, Marcus reports. Kennedy told Trump he should consider another of his former clerks, Brett M. Kavanaugh, who was not on the president’s first two lists of candidates.

This…becomes all the more horrific and disgusting when you consider that she herself was a victim of domestic violence. So…is this “no one protected me back then so screw you too”? Or, “the only victimization that counts is mine”? o_O

Knowing the usual conservative shtick, it’s likely the latter. Remember that Paul Ryan benefited greatly from Social Security and was gleeful about the idea of slash and burning the Social Security funds, as well as the great hypocrisies of one Phyllis Schafly, who made a political career out of advocating that women should not have political voice nor careers.

As I keep repeating, Trump doesn’t have a policy. For anything.

He’s a reactionary know nothing and spews nonsense that he thinks benefits him personally and directly. He doesn’t care about anything else.

If he cared about infrastructure, he’d put out an actual coherent policy (the guy claims he’s a real estate developer - and yet he can’t be bothered with what should otherwise be a core competency). He doesn’t even care that the wall is built - only that people think he’s built it. He doesn’t care about corruption in Ukraine - only that people think he cared he wanted investigations of Biden - not that they actually carried out the investigation.

It’s a scam and a sham.

Could someone explain what is meant by the phrase—whether uttered by analysts or politicians—“Trump’s Ukraine policy”? We’ve learned Trump “didn’t give a sh*t about Ukraine,” thought it a “horrible” nation, wanted “nothing to do with it” and sought only to extract bribes from it.

Well, for Donald Trump, that’s probably “policy” enough.

Though on a slightly-larger scale, his main effort wrt Ukraine seems to be making sure that they don’t piss off his pal Vlad too badly. Which might lead to some of those “friendly” oligarchs getting balky at the energy-sector grift ( a money trail still only lightly-followed at this juncture: maybe Lev Parnas can help fill in some details).

But there was one piece of Sondland’s testimony that didn’t get as much attention as it should have. Under questioning from Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-California) about the specific nature of the quid pro quo between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Sondland said this:
“He had to announce the investigations. He didn’t actually have to do them, as I understood it.”

Which, to be clear, means that in order for Zelensky to get the White House meeting he so coveted, he needed to simply announce that Ukraine was looking into Joe and Hunter Biden — despite there being no evidence of wrongdoing by either of them — as well as the whereabouts of the hacked Democratic National Committee server.
Not conduct the investigation. Not prosecute anyone. Just announce it

Ideology is part of the equation. So are temperament and wisdom (knowing what you don’t know and being able to listen to others). All of those are ultimately about judgment. And really that’s what we should be weighing candidates on - do they have the judgment to handle these jobs. Because honestly, policy preferences aside, a lot of shit happens in 4 years and we should want someone who can exercise the right judgment when shit goes sideways. Donald Trump has poor judgment; and probably any Dem candidate other than Gabbard has better judgment than him. It’s just a matter of figuring out who has the best judgment

Yet it is a sign of just how deep the rot in the US is that the main question in the minds of most is not, why are Republicans/white people okay with this? Why should this be normal? Just like the question is never, why are Republicans in the Senate refusing to perform any legislation? The question is always reversed, to reflect the demands of white Republican men that everything be centred on them.

The question is always, why can’t Democrats make a convincing case? Why are Democrats so partisan? Why are Democrats veering further left? What will Democrats do when faced with perfectly normal, totally okay Republican dereliction of duty?

In a completely unsurprising ruling:

The California state Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Thursday against recent legislation that would have required all presidential candidates ― including President Donald Trump ― to release their tax returns before appearing on the state’s primary election ballot.

The judges wrote in their opinion that one of the requirements under the new law “conflicts” with the state constitution ― which says a candidate “recognized” throughout the nation or the state cannot be barred from appearing on the ballot ― and is therefore “invalid.”

Full decision here.

The decision is based on the California constitution, so they didn’t even get to the question of the federal constitutionality of additional requirements to be on the ballot. That’s about the only thing that surprises me about the decision (but also saves it from being appealed to the SCOTUS.

I might add that this, above, is at the heart of the rot.

It’s not that Donald Trump is a masterful con man who has people fooled. It’s not that he’s a charismatic leader who has a cultlike following among the rubes and Republicans are forced to go along for self-preservation. It’s not even that he’s a puppet of neo-Nazis and the Russian mob and Republicans are held hostage to these circumstances. The last of these is mostly true, but even that doesn’t really get to the heart of the matter.

The truth of it is this. Donald Trump is not just the demented, fat old man bumbling through the halls of the White House. He is the avatar of modern day White Conservatism. He is a blank slate, a gibbering, mindless hunk of protoplasm and collected vices that right-wing media writes upon anew every day. He is the essence of everything that White Conservatives are, in undistilled form. For them to repudiate that would be to repudiate themselves, what they are at their core, stripped of all the trappings that civilisation ever stamped upon them. Donald Trump represents the id of the modern White Conservative. Not everyone who is a part of this movement is male, not every one is white, but at their core, they know what they are and what they want to be, and that is Donald Trump - loud, rude, angry, hateful, and on TV. Every day.

That is the wretched little homunculus at the heart of everyone who identifies with this movement. They can’t go against that. He is them and they are he.

They’re not the entirety of the rot, though. They have accomplices, in the other third of the US that doesn’t fully believe, but doesn’t really care, and is much more comfortable with hating Democrats when their TV tells them to. Rather discouraging experience: Was with an acquaintance who hates Trump (and is actually planning on working for the DNC at next year’s convention). She watched the hearings yesterday afternoon and felt that the Republicans were far more effective in their questioning and their presentations; her opinion was that the Democrats, especially Schiff, failed in their arguments. It was as though she accepted the Republican analysis of the testimony. An audience unfamiliar with the evidence cannot distinguish between unfounded conspiracy theories and hard facts. The Republican approach may be successful when a majority of Americans are unaware of serious articles provided by legitimate news sources, and instead get their information from superficial TV coverage and social media.

In a fiery speech Thursday, director and comedian Sacha Baron Cohen called out social media companies that he argued had boosted extremism and conspiracy theories with little regard for their impact.

Cohen called Facebook, YouTube, Google, Twitter and other internet giants “the greatest propaganda machine in history” and pinned the blame on them for amplifying hateful content.

“On the internet, everything can appear equally legitimate,” Cohen said in prepared remarks posted online Thursday. He spoke at an Anti-Defamation League event at which he received an award.

“Breitbart resembles the BBC,” he said. “The fictitious Protocols of the Elders of Zion look as valid as an ADL report. And the rantings of a lunatic seem as credible as the findings of a Nobel Prize winner.”

You know, I still don’t expect them to do the right thing, but the idea that Trump might actually trust Senate Republicans to protect him is still kind of funny to me:

During a Thursday meeting with White House Counsel Pat Cipollone, a group of Republican senators including Mike Lee of Utah, John Kennedy of Louisiana, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Tom Cotton of Arkansas and Ted Cruz of Texas, spoke about how a Senate trial should be conducted if the House votes to impeach Trump.

After what he did to Graham and Cruz in 2016, he shouldn’t expect loyalty from them. And hell, let’s be honest, every one of them probably wants to be president on some level.

One GOP lawmaker told CNN that right now conversations are happening to temper the expectations of the President as to what is possible. The case being made is that a full trial provides the President with the ability to clear his name and, the lawmaker notes, cutting off the process early could make it look like he has something to hide.

Definitely want to trust them, Donnie.

If the Democrats win the Senate next year, first thing they should do (which they won’t) is abolish the filibuster. Second is grant statehood to D.C. and Puerto Rico and seat four new senators. Third is “reform” SCOTUS by adding four seats so there is a Justice for each federal circuit, and seat 4 new Democratic Justices. If they don’t, SCOTUS will strike down any progressive legislation they somehow manage to pass.

Walmart withdraws donations to Cindy Hyde-Smith after criticism

Walmart on Tuesday said it was “requesting a refund” from the campaign of Republican Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith after the company came under pressure to distance itself from the Mississippi lawmaker’s “public hanging” remark.

Campaign finance records show that the company made a $2,000 donation on Nov. 18, nearly a week after a video of Hyde-Smith saying she would be “on the front row” if a supporter invited her to “a public hanging” went viral. Records also show the company gave a $1,000 contribution to her campaign this past June.

I wouldn’t abolish the filibuster, but I would reform it. Basically, say if you won’t vote for cloture, you have to actually filibuster and continue debate until you fall down. It is useful to slow down and stop bad bills from becoming laws (imagine how much more the GOP majority could have done in the first two years of Trump’s administration if they didn’t have to worry about getting passed cloture).

DC statehood is complicated by the 23rd Amendment, and unfortunately (unless there’s also a constitutional amendment for popular election of the president and vice-president) most likely means statehood can’t happen unless the Amendment is repealed. (Personally, I support statehood for DC, or Columbia or whatever name it takes, but this is a procedural issue we’ve been saddled with)

There still isn’t a consensus in Puerto Rico if they want statehood (and there’s no guarantee that once the statehood issue is resolved that they won’t elect at least one Republican senator). Granting statehood against the will of the people in the territory isn’t something that’s ever happened, and I can’t imagine it’s a good idea to try it with PR given the perceived history of imperialism in the Caribbean. (Again, personally, I support statehood, but it’s ultimately a decision for the people of Puerto Rico to make)

I agree with expanding the Supreme Court, but I don’t think you’ll get much popular support for “we are adding four new seats next year”. I suspect that if it happens, to be presumed “fair” it’d have to be set up that the seats are added over the course of 2 or 4 years - 2022, 2023, 2025, 2026 (basically two in the next presidential term and two in the subsequent term).

I have to go to Lubbock next week. I am requesting your thoughts and prayers, for the place is the true harbinger of the Idiocracy as well as 68% pro-Trump.

To start with, my Lubbock bank, Prosperity Bank, cranked up an all-singing, all-dancing, shiny new and improved customer service online banking site on Monday. As old IT hands here might have guessed, it went on the fritz and shut down within an hour. CEO David Zalman posted a tearful apology on their FB page, pleading that they had beta tested and everything and he had no idea what had happened. He advised that customers could still get their account information from the call center. Another poster indicated that there was about an hour wait for this. None of this affected me but what about people who depend on online banking, as with the check-scan deposit gizmo and such? It finally came up this morning, though not completely.

Today, I had to call the yokel utility company, Lubbock Power and Light. Alas, I could not because their phone system was down. Completely. Had been for 3 hours. As with Preposterous Bank, their FB page is still functioning and it has some workarounds for emergency notification but routine business is on hold, so to speak.

My business nose detects the roadkill whiff of bright-idea cost cutting in all this, but I don’t have any detailed information.

I blame Russian agents, or the yokel leadership, which may very well be the same thing.

You don’t need a constitutional amendment to grant statehood to D.C. Just statutorily reduce the size of D.C. to a few federal buildings around the Capitol, then grant statehood to all the parts where people live. If D.C. has zero residents, its not entitled to any electors. Statehood won overwhelmingly in the last P.R. referendum, though I know there was a boycott by anti-statehood groups.
