NOVEMBER 22, 1963: DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT, JFK library

President Kennedy was aware that a feud among party leaders in Texas could jeopardize his chances of carrying the state in 1964, and one of his aims for the trip was to bring Democrats together. He also knew that a relatively small but vocal group of extremists was contributing to the political tensions in Texas and would likely make its presence felt—particularly in Dallas, where US Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai Stevenson had been physically attacked a month earlier after making a speech there. Nonetheless, JFK seemed to relish the prospect of leaving Washington, getting out among the people and into the political fray.

The attack on Stevenson refers to an incident with a crazed Bircher woman after his speech.

At one point a woman hit Stevenson on the head with a sign, leading Stevenson to remark “is she animal or human?”, and telling a policeman “I don’t want her to go to jail, I want her to go to school.”

Rep. Steve King Falsely IDs George Soros’ Son as Whistleblower

“Adam Schiff said, ‘I do not know the identity of the whistleblower,’” Rep. Steve King (R-CA) tweeted on Thursday morning, referring to remarks House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) made in the first public impeachment hearing Wednesday.

“@RepAdamSchiff here are four strong clues.”

King, trying to suggest the whistleblower is tight with top Democrats, attached four pictures of a bearded man standing with Democratic figures like Hillary Clinton, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). The wording of King’s tweet implied that the unnamed man in the pictures is the whistleblower. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) then amplified King’s claim by quote-tweeting King’s photo collage.

The man in the pictures is Alexander Soros, whose father is often featured in anti-Semitic right-wing conspiracy theories.

Great! I’m on old marching band member all through high school. When I went to the U of IL, women weren’t allowed in the marching band, so I volunteered as “secretary” and managed their music and marching patterns during my years there. Served as an usher on the floor of the Memorial Stadium, so got to enjoy our work from right on the spot! Soon after I graduated, women were made a part of the marching band. Shucks! Just missed it!

My high school was very small (about 300 students all told), so our band teacher had to coerce/bribe/whatever a bunch of students to just carry instruments and pretend to play them so we’d manage to have more than a dozen marchers on the field.

Actually, great fun was had by all and some of us actually managed to learn how to passably play an instrument.

Whether or not Barr’s “Russia Probe Report” is credible or not - and from the sound of it there’s really not much “there” there (in IG Horowitz’s report anyway), it doesn’t have to be objectively “credible” to be believed. What it sounds like is that DoJ, once again acting mainly as Donald Trump’s personal law firm/investigators, has found some minor flaw or flaws in the 2016 election-meddling probes, and are going to magnify it (with as much faux-outrage, hysterical mis-reporting and overreaction as the RWNM is capable of) to try to deflect attention away from Trump’s obvious criminality, and feed into the Trump/GOP/RW “Deep State Conspiracy” self-victimization. It’s not a good sign that Trump’s Designated Senate Asskisser (Lindsey Graham) is ringmastering this: it’s likely the Senate GOP is going to try to leverage this petty “scandal” for all it’s worth.

My opinion, to be blunt, is I think Calvinism is a bunch of horseshit, so when I get the opportunity to poke at Calvinists, I take it. They view egalitarianism as the worst possible thing that could befall a society, because from their POV, “the natural order of things” is being thrown out the window in favor a new social structure….one that means there’s an exceedingly good chance they won’t end up at the apex of the pyramid.

And that realization scares them to death.

I remember when Tesla revealed the Model 3. The interior? I thought it was just dumb. “Where are all the buttons?” I thought. “What a fail.” I thought. Then I ignored the car until my friend got one. I went over, sat in it. Drove it. I was truly shocked. It just worked. I ordered one later that day and it’s been the best car I’ve owned.

Not sure I “need” a truck. But a lot can happen in another year or two. I actually like the thing, if just for the performance aspect. If the top-of-the-line tri-motor really will get over 500 miles, that’d be what seals the deal for me.

A new national survey finds independent voters leading a sharp swing in opposition to impeachment, the second major poll to produce those findings this week.

The latest national poll from Emerson College finds 45 percent oppose impeaching President Trump, against 43 percent who support it. That’s a 6-point swing in support from October, when 48 percent of voters supported impeachment and only 44 percent opposed.

More importantly, the poll shows more independents now oppose impeachment than support it, a significant change from Emerson’s polling in October. The new poll found 49 percent oppose impeachment compared to 34 percent who support it. In October, 48 percent of independents polled supported impeachment, against 39 percent who opposed.

Since October, Emerson has found Trump’s job approval rating jump by 5 points, from 43 percent to 48 percent.

This is the second poll this week to show voters are increasingly likely to oppose impeachment, despite wall-to-wall media coverage of the House hearings that have produced bombshell testimony about how Trump threatened to withhold financial aid to Ukraine if the country did not open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, a top contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.

There Are Two Separate Impeachment Hearings Happening Right Now — And Republicans Are Winning Theirs

Nothing Republican Rep. Devin Nunes does during the hearings makes sense if you watch it in the moment. When it’s posted on Facebook later, though, it works perfectly.

Democrats have hoped that the impeachment hearings might bridge the vast divide between the how the ideological factions in the country view President Donald Trump’s wrongdoing. On Wednesday, as Gordon Sondland, the US ambassador to the European Union, read his opening statement, liberal Twitter users buzzed optimistically that it might finally be the moment.

“I know that members of this committee have frequently framed these complicated issues in the form of a simple question: Was there a quid pro quo?” Sondland said. “As I testified previously, with regard to the requested White House call and White House meeting, the answer is yes.”

“Holy cow Gordon Sondland going full John Dean in opening statement,” MSNBC host Ari Melber tweeted.

But there are two impeachment hearings unfolding in the nation’s capital. The other, being carried out simultaneously by the Republicans, is quite different. The second-most-shared story about Vindman was a Breitbart piece titled “Alexander Vindman Admits Making Up Parts Of Trump Call Summary” (97,300 engagements). The top story about Yovanovitch was by the New York Post, titled “Marie Yovanovitch Admits Obama Admin Prepped Her On Hunter Biden” (141,100 engagements), which was shared 15,000 times from the Texas for Donald Trump 2020 Facebook page and 10,000 times from the Silent Majority page.

For every piece on Facebook about impeachment from a mainstream publication, there are dozens of unhinged right-wing conspiracies going viral on the social network. A post with a transcript from Rush Limbaugh’s radio show titled “George Kent Made The Case For Investigating The Bidens” (15,000 engagements) was ranked third among this week’s stories with the most engagement about George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, who testified publicly last week. “Impeachment Witness Bill Taylor Admits: I Can ‘Tell You What I Heard From People’” (37,600 engagements) by right-wing news site Western Journal was the third-most-shared story about Taylor.

I didn’t copy the embedded links. But, if you want to know why people aren’t deciding it’s time to end the presidency, realize that just putting out the truth on TV isn’t winning the propaganda war.

Well, what irritated me (beyond the abortion issue) was his deliberate ignorance of history. He ignores Jim Crow. He ignores mass incarceration of people of color. He ignores “broken windows” policing. He ignores the drug war. He ignores ALL OF THAT. Add that to his statement that black churches don’t have the right theology and you’ve got a strong case that James White is a stone racist.

Thing is, so many people on the Evangelical side think that James and his buddy Jeff are just a little outrageous for wanting to execute women who have abortions, but they’d have no problem with the stand overall. However, they’re much more sensitive to accusations of racism, which is why I’m going to spend the time to prove to James’ daughter Summer that her dad is a stone racist. (I know she won’t believe it, but hey, I’m going to do it just my own personal benefit.)

This means the room is $120 a night! I have no problem with this, if the original advertised price was $120 I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Why do you need to lie to me and then spring the extra fee at the end? If the hotel wasn’t so conveniently located to the event I was attending I would seriously have canceled the transaction and picked another hotel.

PSA: get your rental car insurance at the rental car desk. I got mine through Expedia and it’s been a problem.
2 months ago I rented a car for my niece’s wedding, came out to the hotel parking lot and someone did ~500 in damage. I got billed 1006.00 including fees. I had to do all the legwork and scan and send a bunch of docs and signatures. I had to do a conference call between AIG (the Expedia insurance) and Viking billing (rep. Hertz). Viking billing called today. AIG paid the damages and the loss of use charge leaving me with a 230 bill. He dropped it 75 bux if I paid today, so I did. What a pain in the ass.

Wireless providers are notorious for this too. The most common ploy nowadays is to advertise a 4 line unlimited plan for, say $150. Then you find out that price only applies AFTER the discount for autopay and paperless billing. So if you don’t want either of those services, you’ll be paying $20 - $30 more for that “deal”.

Also, that $300 credit they promised you when you activated the new phone? It’s $10 a month for 30 months and the credits dont’ even start for 90 days…

I remember those days, we have a reconverted USAF base served by discount airlines, used to spend more money on gas and parking than on the tickets to Scotland.

Was a great way to travel with small children until they stopped boarding families with kids first and made you pay for the privilege of choosing a seat.

And this is a problem—too many kids are getting separated from their parents on trips. This should not happen., but airplanes are doing it and forcing parents to pay more to sit next to their children.

Here’s an opinion piece from earlier this week in USA Today.

Airlines tell parents to pay up or risk sitting rows away from their kids. That’s wrong.
Airlines know how old every passenger is on their planes, including children. So why are families separated and why hasn’t the government stepped in?

I’m a little fuzzy on the exact time, but it was around now, 56 years ago, I walked into class late from recess. There was, what I know know to have been, a pall over the room. Lot’s of confused faces and some crying. The teacher had to inform this little wise cracker that the president had been shot, right over in Dallas. It was the strangest feeling. So apart from the mood of the rest of the room. Like standing in a pool of warm water, and not feeling wet.

I was just booking a hotel room and the advertised price was $100 a night, great! Go through the booking process enter all my info and right at the end there is a Mandatory $20/day fee apparently to cover amenities like, wifi, pool, gym etc.

This means the room is $120 a night! I have no problem with this, if the original advertised price was $120 I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Why do you need to lie to me and then spring the extra fee at the end? If the hotel wasn’t so conveniently located to the event I was attending I would seriously have canceled the transaction and picked another hotel.

IIRC, some years ago an airline tried advertising their total prices with no add-ons later in the booking process. They advertised this fact. Bookings fell because people are stupid and went with the lowest price they saw at first.

Yeah, I know the feeling: one of those once-considered-unforgettable events (“Where were you when Kennedy was shot”?), now slowly receding into the mists of “modern history”: even if a bit slower than most, thanks to the then-unique, now-common media saturation.
I was at school, too: my mother had just picked me up (we had half-day sessions on Fridays), and I remember her being upset, and listening to the non-stop coverage on the car radio. And then, once we got home, like most most Americans who had televisions, we turned ours on, and seldom left them for four days.
