NOVEMBER 22, 1963: DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT, JFK library

President Kennedy was aware that a feud among party leaders in Texas could jeopardize his chances of carrying the state in 1964, and one of his aims for the trip was to bring Democrats together. He also knew that a relatively small but vocal group of extremists was contributing to the political tensions in Texas and would likely make its presence felt—particularly in Dallas, where US Ambassador to the United Nations Adlai Stevenson had been physically attacked a month earlier after making a speech there. Nonetheless, JFK seemed to relish the prospect of leaving Washington, getting out among the people and into the political fray.

The attack on Stevenson refers to an incident with a crazed Bircher woman after his speech.

At one point a woman hit Stevenson on the head with a sign, leading Stevenson to remark “is she animal or human?”, and telling a policeman “I don’t want her to go to jail, I want her to go to school.”

Exclusive: FBI official under investigation after allegedly altering document in 2016 Russia probe

An FBI official is under criminal investigation after allegedly altering a document related to 2016 surveillance of a Trump campaign adviser, several people briefed on the matter told CNN.

The possibility of a substantive change to an investigative document is likely to fuel accusations from President Donald Trump and his allies that the FBI committed wrongdoing in its investigation of connections between Russian election meddling and the Trump campaign.

Rep. Steve King Falsely IDs George Soros’ Son as Whistleblower

“Adam Schiff said, ‘I do not know the identity of the whistleblower,’” Rep. Steve King (R-CA) tweeted on Thursday morning, referring to remarks House Intelligence Committee chair Adam Schiff (D-CA) made in the first public impeachment hearing Wednesday.

@RepAdamSchiff here are four strong clues.”

King, trying to suggest the whistleblower is tight with top Democrats, attached four pictures of a bearded man standing with Democratic figures like Hillary Clinton, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). The wording of King’s tweet implied that the unnamed man in the pictures is the whistleblower. Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) then amplified King’s claim by quote-tweeting King’s photo collage.

The man in the pictures is Alexander Soros, whose father is often featured in anti-Semitic right-wing conspiracy theories.

Great! I’m on old marching band member all through high school. When I went to the U of IL, women weren’t allowed in the marching band, so I volunteered as “secretary” and managed their music and marching patterns during my years there. Served as an usher on the floor of the Memorial Stadium, so got to enjoy our work from right on the spot! Soon after I graduated, women were made a part of the marching band. Shucks! Just missed it!

My high school was very small (about 300 students all told), so our band teacher had to coerce/bribe/whatever a bunch of students to just carry instruments and pretend to play them so we’d manage to have more than a dozen marchers on the field.

Actually, great fun was had by all and some of us actually managed to learn how to passably play an instrument.

Whether or not Barr’s “Russia Probe Report” is credible or not - and from the sound of it there’s really not much “there” there (in IG Horowitz’s report anyway), it doesn’t have to be objectively “credible” to be believed. What it sounds like is that DoJ, once again acting mainly as Donald Trump’s personal law firm/investigators, has found some minor flaw or flaws in the 2016 election-meddling probes, and are going to magnify it (with as much faux-outrage, hysterical mis-reporting and overreaction as the RWNM is capable of) to try to deflect attention away from Trump’s obvious criminality, and feed into the Trump/GOP/RW “Deep State Conspiracy” self-victimization. It’s not a good sign that Trump’s Designated Senate Asskisser (Lindsey Graham) is ringmastering this: it’s likely the Senate GOP is going to try to leverage this petty “scandal” for all it’s worth.

My high school was big, my graduating class was about 800 kids. They split the school the next year into two high schools, and I’m thankful I missed all that.

My high school was big, my graduating class was about 800 kids. They split the school the next year into two high schools, and I’m thankful I missed all that.

My school was about that size too. My first year we were all jambed into one school. The second year we were spit into two schools, but the new building wasn’t finished yet so we had a morning shift and an afternoon shift for the first half-year. I was in the morning shift that started at about 6:30.

My opinion, to be blunt, is I think Calvinism is a bunch of horseshit, so when I get the opportunity to poke at Calvinists, I take it. The last couple of days I’ve been needling on a woman who lives in Las Vegas, and her father is one of the pastors of the church I’ve picketed. Thing is, dad has had me blocked on Twitter for years after I criticized him about his LGBTQ beliefs. He called me a totalitarian and then blocked me. No matter, I have ways of keeping up with what he’s doing. Dad is also a stone racist, which I have put on a poster board and taped to my SUV while picketing.

Imagine my surprise this evening to find that he slid into my mentions! Perhaps Summer complained to daddy James and James unblocked me so he could give me grief. *smirk* I win this one.

And I realize I’ve been slacking on the picketing. I’m going to picket this Sunday, as my knee is getting almost back to normal and “light walking” was prescribed by the doctor. In the meantime, I’m going to crawl James’ Twitter feed, pulling out evidence that he’s a stone racist. I love a challenge.

And now Lindsay Graham is opening an investigation into The Bidens…

washingtonpost.com

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey O. Graham sent a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday requesting documents related to former vice president Joe Biden and his communications with Ukrainian officials, a step seen as a GOP effort to counter the House impeachment investigation of President Trump.

The inquiry by Graham (R-S.C.) is focused on any calls Biden may have had with Petro Poroshenko, then the Ukrainian president, regarding the firing of the country’s top prosecutor, as well as any that referenced an investigation of Burisma, the Ukrainian natural-gas company that employed Biden’s son Hunter Biden.

Graham’s document request suggests he is seeking to legitimize Trump’s accusations that Biden, then vice president, put pressure on Ukraine to fire its lead prosecutor to protect his son, a claim without evidence that has been disputed by officials familiar with the investigation.

I’m sure Barr will fabricate the evidence for #LeningradLindsay

re: #88 Mike Lamb

Under what constitutional authority would they be able to have a homelessness plan for CA?

I don’t know, but this sounds suspiciously like a homeless plan that has been proposed for Redding, California.

Redding Mayor Envisions Forcing Homeless People To Stay In Temporary Shelter

Mayor Julie Winter says Redding is overwhelmed with people camping in public spaces and along the Sacramento River, which is why she’d like the city to establish a new shelter that forces homeless people to stay there.

“That might be a low-security facility, but it’s not a facility you could just leave because you wanted to,” Winter says. “You need to get clean, you need to get sober, you need to demonstrate self-sufficiency, and once you do that you’re free to go.”

ijpr.org

Uhm, sounds like a prison.

Redding is under a lot of stress right now. It has a big Charismatic church, Bethel, which runs the “Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry” aka “Christian Hogwarts.” Thousands of people come from around the world to take unaccredited classes at this outfit. The church also puts on a lot of weekend seminars and attracts people from all over the US and the world. As a result, locals are being priced out of their rentals and forced to move elsewhere—or they become homeless. Plus there’s a lot of antagonism between the Bethelites (who have infiltrated the city council, the chamber of commerce and other institutions) and the people who find Bethel’s goal of wanting to make Redding a “kingdom city” unpalatable.

Mayor Julie Winter is an elder at Bethel. *scowl*

So I was dredging Twitter to see what would come up with a search of James White racist and gosh, it didn’t take no time at all.

Here’s the pastor of a black church in Philly not mincing words about James White, and this is from last week:

Eric Mason calls James White ‘racist’ for calling black churches ‘especially’ theologically unsound

*snip*
[from White’s podcast earlier this year]

“What struck me was there is in a sense — oh boy am I gonna get in trouble for this — in many churches of whatever ethnic mix, there is an anti-intellectualism, an anti-church history-ism, there is an anti-theology-ism, there is an anti-Bible translation, Bible transmission-ism, and it’s seen in the fact that it’s almost never addressed … but it’s especially true in black churches. It’s just the reality. The idea of sound doctrine, church history, there are so few,” White said in the clip posted by Mason on Facebook Tuesday.

christianpost.com

I read stuff like that and it’s like “Summer, I have absolutely no problem calling your father a stone racist, because he is one.”

The kind of Calvinism that still lives on in American thinking is that Wealth is an Outward Sign of Inner Grace: that rich people are more blessed by God because they are more moral.

In an ideal world where your financial success was based entirely on the amount of effort you exerted, that might begin to make some sense.

It is also a throwback to the notion that kings and queens were put there by god to rule over us common sinners and were somehow closer to him.

In any case, it is good camel lubricant to help stuff that mother through the eye of a needle…

I went over, sat in it. Drove it. I was truly shocked. It just worked. I ordered one later that day and it’s been the best car I’ve owned.

Not sure I “need” a truck. But a lot can happen in another year or two. I actually like the thing, if just for the performance aspect. If the top-of-the-line tri-motor really will get over 500 miles, that’d be what seals the deal for me.

Elon Musk was left dumbfounded Thursday night during a botched test of the Tesla’s first “bulletproof” electric pickup truck that left its windows smashed up.

The red-faced Tesla CEO tried to show off the durability of the Cybertruck’s “armor glass” windows by having chief designer Franz von Holzhausen throw a metal ball at them.

But the glass cracked, drawing groans from the crowd gathered in Los Angeles for the “Blade Runner”-inspired vehicle’s unveiling.

“Oh my f—ing God,” Musk muttered onstage. “Well, maybe that was a little too hard.”

That dumbfuck is regurgitating a bogus quote, and doesn’t get that the Founders would be absolutely horrified at everything Trumpworld has done. They’d have already impeached and removed Trump - not just for the criminal conduct, but for the overall lack of knowledge, skill, and competency to do anything other than try to enrich himself from the office, all while using foreign assistance to win in 2016 and get reelected in 2020.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Trump’s on Faux this morning spewing his daily bulkshit, and Fox lets nearly all his lies slide, which is quite the feat.

Meanwhile, Bolton comes out of nowhere to post cryptic tweet about how he’s back… as though he was ever gone. This fucker is a coward who sent Hill to report Trump malfeasance instead of doing it himself.

Trumpists who claim that those who testify under oath somehow lied or got events wrong should buck up and testify under oath. If what they say is true, they’d have no reason to worry.

The problem is that it’s easy to lie when there are no repercussions. Testify and lie under oath? That’s perjury, on top of the other crimes that are directly involved here.

And with the GOP looking to game the Senate trial so that it ends with Trump not being removed from office, Democrats should instead look to pile on the articles of impeachment - everything from emoluments to every single instance of obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and every official act Trump took that violated federal law or undermined US natsec.

Add a count for Trump overruling the natsec establishment that would have prevented Ivanka and Jared from getting clearances, coupled with the fact that they then used private email accounts to do official govt business.

Include all the tax fraud and wire fraud and mail fraud re: Trump’s scam charity and scam school.

Note the bribe of Biondi to drop the investigation of Trump’s scam school in FL and Biondi being added to Trump’s team.

All of it. Make them go through every single act and instance of wrongdoing and argue that it all doesn’t matter.

If the GOP are going to burn the Constitution - make them own it. Make them forever own that they ended the US Democratic experiment because they would not remove the most corrupt and criminal occupant of the WH solely because he’s a GOPer. They put party above nation, and have shredded the Congressional power to oversee co-equal branches of government.

So at least the WaPo has figured out - and not reading the article, I can’t say whether they’ve articulated it very clearly - that one of the “bombshells” in AG Barr’s little “Russia Probe” (the “Horowitz Report”) is likely to be a flat dud. It’s the other “bomb” (the “Durham Report”) that Barr and Lindsey Graham, its intended recipient, are going to have to rely on for their deflectionary BS. And unfortunately, from the account/recap I read yesterday, there is likely to be just enough “wrongdoing” uncovered from Durham’s probe to be able to make a stink over. Gah, people suck.

A new national survey finds independent voters leading a sharp swing in opposition to impeachment, the second major poll to produce those findings this week.

The latest national poll from Emerson College finds 45 percent oppose impeaching President Trump, against 43 percent who support it. That’s a 6-point swing in support from October, when 48 percent of voters supported impeachment and only 44 percent opposed.

More importantly, the poll shows more independents now oppose impeachment than support it, a significant change from Emerson’s polling in October. The new poll found 49 percent oppose impeachment compared to 34 percent who support it. In October, 48 percent of independents polled supported impeachment, against 39 percent who opposed.

Since October, Emerson has found Trump’s job approval rating jump by 5 points, from 43 percent to 48 percent.

This is the second poll this week to show voters are increasingly likely to oppose impeachment, despite wall-to-wall media coverage of the House hearings that have produced bombshell testimony about how Trump threatened to withhold financial aid to Ukraine if the country did not open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden, a top contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.

If you wonder why you have to speak up on Facebook, here it is:

There Are Two Separate Impeachment Hearings Happening Right Now — And Republicans Are Winning Theirs

Nothing Republican Rep. Devin Nunes does during the hearings makes sense if you watch it in the moment. When it’s posted on Facebook later, though, it works perfectly.

Democrats have hoped that the impeachment hearings might bridge the vast divide between the how the ideological factions in the country view President Donald Trump’s wrongdoing. On Wednesday, as Gordon Sondland, the US ambassador to the European Union, read his opening statement, liberal Twitter users buzzed optimistically that it might finally be the moment.

“I know that members of this committee have frequently framed these complicated issues in the form of a simple question: Was there a quid pro quo?” Sondland said. “As I testified previously, with regard to the requested White House call and White House meeting, the answer is yes.”

“Holy cow Gordon Sondland going full John Dean in opening statement,” MSNBC host Ari Melber tweeted.

But there are two impeachment hearings unfolding in the nation’s capital. One, carried out by the Democrats, is designed to ascertain the truth as to whether Trump sought a “quid pro quo” deal with Ukraine to get the country to investigate Joe Biden and the 2016 presidential election in exchange for aid money. The other, being carried out simultaneously by the Republicans, is quite different. Instead of trying to learn the truth, it seeks to create not just a counternarrative but a completely separate reality.

Each round of GOP questioning is not meant to interrogate the witnesses, which today included Sondland, but instead to create moments that can be flipped into Fox News segments, shared as bite-size Facebook posts, or dropped into 4chan threads. Their alternate universe — built from baseless online conspiracy theories and reading the tea leaves of Trump’s Twitter feed — dominates Fox News and Facebook. And the Republicans’ strategy, as confusing and bizarre as it may seem to those on the outside, is working.

As for articles mentioning the witnesses by name, Vindman and Yovanovitch have been targeted the most heavily. The second-most-shared story about Vindman was a Breitbart piece titled “Alexander Vindman Admits Making Up Parts Of Trump Call Summary” (97,300 engagements). The top story about Yovanovitch was by the New York Post, titled “Marie Yovanovitch Admits Obama Admin Prepped Her On Hunter Biden” (141,100 engagements), which was shared 15,000 times from the Texas for Donald Trump 2020 Facebook page and 10,000 times from the Silent Majority page.

For every piece on Facebook about impeachment from a mainstream publication, there are dozens of unhinged right-wing conspiracies going viral on the social network. A post with a transcript from Rush Limbaugh’s radio show titled “George Kent Made The Case For Investigating The Bidens” (15,000 engagements) was ranked third among this week’s stories with the most engagement about George Kent, the deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, who testified publicly last week. “Impeachment Witness Bill Taylor Admits: I Can ‘Tell You What I Heard From People’” (37,600 engagements) by right-wing news site Western Journal was the third-most-shared story about Taylor.

I didn’t copy the embedded links. But, if you want to know why people aren’t deciding it’s time to end the presidency, realize that just putting out the truth on TV isn’t winning the propaganda war.

I really agree with you here!! (With most everything you ever say, but this especially!)

Quite true: but that racist quote from James White was really nothing but racist garbage. Bitching at “black women” as a whole for having too many abortions? I’m guessing that if figures showed they had fewer abortions, he’d be bitching at them for popping out too many kids to soak up welfare giveaways, or whatever…

Well, what irritated me (beyond the abortion issue) was his deliberate ignorance of history. He ignores Jim Crow. He ignores mass incarceration of people of color. He ignores “broken windows” policing. He ignores the drug war. He ignores ALL OF THAT. Add that to his statement that black churches don’t have the right theology and you’ve got a strong case that James White is a stone racist.

Thing is, so many people on the Evangelical side think that James and his buddy Jeff are just a little outrageous for wanting to execute women who have abortions, but they’d have no problem with the stand overall. However, they’re much more sensitive to accusations of racism, which is why I’m going to spend the time to prove to James’ daughter Summer that her dad is a stone racist. (I know she won’t believe it, but hey, I’m going to do it just my own personal benefit.)

I agree with that thread. They’re starting off with the Ukraine issue now….but the real meat and potatoes of the impeachment case against Trump is going to be the widespread money-laundering that Trump’s been up to for many, many years - decades, most likely and it’s going to be a pretty ironclad case at that. Then kick it over the Senate for trial around March or April next year, which puts serious pressure on the GOP as the election is right around the corner.

plus mueller - the whole point of which was to set things up for Congress to act upon — whenever they were ready. The facts didn’t rot, and the truth is still the truth.

and then everything else

- Impeachment process is legislative oversight requiring co-operation
- Campaign finance charges along with impeachment proceedings make the case for tax returns
- Contradictory testimony requires further investigation (stone etc)
- After awhile Trump may get the idea he is in serious trouble

they have a lot to work with
1. Bribery/extortion
2. Abuse of power
3. Coverup
4. Witness intimidation
5. Perjury (from Mueller investigation et al)
6. Emoluments
7. Campaign Finance
8. Contempt of Congress
9 Aiding a hostile foreign power
10 obstruction

Socialism 101: Just don’t call it socialism… From the Washington Post:

BALDWIN, Fla. — When Sean Lynch ran for mayor, he never anticipated that the job would involve hiring a butcher and tracking the sale of collard greens.

But in 2018, two years into his first term, the only grocery store in town shut down. People in Baldwin, Fla., a rural outpost in northeast Florida, were left with few options. They could leave town, driving 10 miles through road construction to nearby Macclenny, or battle 20 miles of freeway traffic through Jacksonville’s suburban sprawl. Alternatively, they could cobble together a meal out of canned goods from the local Dollar General, or head to a nearby truck stop for greasy, deep-fried fast food.

For many of Baldwin’s roughly 1,600 residents, though, traveling for food wasn’t really a choice. The town’s median household income of $44,271 is well below the state average, and it’s not uncommon for families to juggle their schedules around sharing one car. Senior citizens also make up a significant percentage of the population, and many no longer drive.

When a deep red town’s only grocery closed, city hall opened its own store. Just don’t call it ‘socialism.’

I was just booking a hotel room and the advertised price was $100 a night, great! Go through the booking process enter all my info and right at the end there is a Mandatory $20/day fee apparently to cover amenities like, wifi, pool, gym etc.

This means the room is $120 a night! I have no problem with this, if the original advertised price was $120 I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Why do you need to lie to me and then spring the extra fee at the end? If the hotel wasn’t so conveniently located to the event I was attending I would seriously have canceled the transaction and picked another hotel.

PSA: get your rental car insurance at the rental car desk. I got mine through Expedia and it’s been a problem.
2 months ago I rented a car for my niece’s wedding, came out to the hotel parking lot and someone did ~500 in damage. I got billed 1006.00 including fees. I had to do all the legwork and scan and send a bunch of docs and signatures. I had to do a conference call between AIG (the Expedia insurance) and Viking billing (rep. Hertz). Viking billing called today. AIG paid the damages and the loss of use charge leaving me with a 230 bill. He dropped it 75 bux if I paid today, so I did. What a pain in the ass.

And when you offer up literally anyone else who’d operate under the constitutional constraints you take when you say the oath, these fuckers still pick Trump who they all admit broke his oath and violates the law regularly.

The GOP must be burnt to the ground - root and stem. They no longer stand for the rule of law and upholding the oath of office, but they put party above nation and no longer hide it.

If a Democrat does literally any of the hundreds of acts of wrongdoing Trump has already admitted to or been convicted of or openly engaged in, the GOP would move so fast to impeach and remove, your head would spin.

Wireless providers are notorious for this too. The most common ploy nowadays is to advertise a 4 line unlimited plan for, say $150. Then you find out that price only applies AFTER the discount for autopay and paperless billing. So if you don’t want either of those services, you’ll be paying $20 - $30 more for that “deal”.

Also, that $300 credit they promised you when you activated the new phone? It’s $10 a month for 30 months and the credits dont’ even start for 90 days…

It’s like the airlines.

The price for a seat seems totally reasonable. Then they add on the checked baggage fee. And the carryon baggage fee. And the ticketing fee. And the soda & peanuts fee. And a landing fee.

Bedad, we found an airline selling flights for 50P…

“Bedad, we found an airline selling flights for 50P…”

I remember those days, we have a reconverted USAF base served by discount airlines, used to spend more money on gas and parking than on the tickets to Scotland.

Was a great way to travel with small children until they stopped boarding families with kids first and made you pay for the privilege of choosing a seat.

And this is a problem—too many kids are getting separated from their parents on trips. This should not happen., but airplanes are doing it and forcing parents to pay more to sit next to their children.

Here’s an opinion piece from earlier this week in USA Today.

Airlines tell parents to pay up or risk sitting rows away from their kids. That’s wrong.
Airlines know how old every passenger is on their planes, including children. So why are families separated and why hasn’t the government stepped in?

Now if we can just get that five year old to stop kicking the back of my seat, I’m good.

Based on what Lowry wrote it’s now clear that every Republican will gladly accept Russian assistance!

I have several, not Amazon branded, that work from a smartphone app. Handy for lamps, go to bed and turn off the lights in the living room. There is one on a plant light that we put on a schedule.

And another big difference: if Trump were a (D), most Democrats would also vote to boot his ass…

I fully expect Trump to nullify the 2020 election on the grounds of Ukraine hacking the count. And I would not be surprised if the JCS overthrew him and Pence installing Nancy in as caretaker.

I’m a little fuzzy on the exact time, but it was around now, 56 years ago, I walked into class late from recess. There was, what I know know to have been, a pall over the room. Lot’s of confused faces and some crying. The teacher had to inform this little wise cracker that the president had been shot, right over in Dallas. It was the strangest feeling. So apart from the mood of the rest of the room. Like standing in a pool of warm water, and not feeling wet.

Oh, hello everyone.

Swing voters and ‘independents’ are basically shallow idiots who vote one way or the other totally irrationally.

Nevertheless, they are usually the decisive part of the electorate.

re: #282 danarchy

I was just booking a hotel room and the advertised price was $100 a night, great! Go through the booking process enter all my info and right at the end there is a Mandatory $20/day fee apparently to cover amenities like, wifi, pool, gym etc.

This means the room is $120 a night! I have no problem with this, if the original advertised price was $120 I wouldn’t have thought twice about it. Why do you need to lie to me and then spring the extra fee at the end? If the hotel wasn’t so conveniently located to the event I was attending I would seriously have canceled the transaction and picked another hotel.

IIRC, some years ago an airline tried advertising their total prices with no add-ons later in the booking process. They advertised this fact. Bookings fell because people are stupid and went with the lowest price they saw at first.

Hello!

Yeah, I know the feeling: one of those once-considered-unforgettable events (“Where were you when Kennedy was shot”?), now slowly receding into the mists of “modern history”: even if a bit slower than most, thanks to the then-unique, now-common media saturation.
I was at school, too: my mother had just picked me up (we had half-day sessions on Fridays), and I remember her being upset, and listening to the non-stop coverage on the car radio. And then, once we got home, like most most Americans who had televisions, we turned ours on, and seldom left them for four days.
