I think Rudy’s sole job is to push fake charges against those who are holding Trump accountable.

Show us the rules the Democrats violated. If you don’t like the rules, you shouldn’t have written them that way in 2016.

Apparently the rule they’re insisting Schiff broke is the one governing the “right” by the minority on any House committee to conduct their own hearing with witnesses of their own choose. This was the letter that Nunes pulled out on Tuesday and handed off to Schiff.

So where were they when this was just a committee hearing? This is a full House impeachment inquiry now. Fuck all y’all, the rules have changed.

It seems to be one of those obscure rules that we’ve never heard of and likely were never exercised by House Dems during years prior because House Repubs would never abide by it.

Quite satisfying to wake up and see that Devin Nunes is involved in all this shit up to his eyeballs. Heh. He’s probably sweating bullets this weekend, or he will be soon.

Also, on Monday, a Federal judge will rule on the Don McGhan matter, as to whether Mr. McGhan must testify under subpoena to Congress….though I’d imagine if her ruling goes against McGhan, he’ll try it to take to all the way up to SCOTUS to buy time. And if SCOTUS ultimately rules that yes, Congressional subpoenas must be complied with, well, that has the potential to open the floodgates.

Looks like more glorious Infrastructure Weeks ahead.

If Bret Stephens is intellectually honest, he’s working on a column right now denouncing Donald Trump as worse than Goebbels.

47
2:12 PM - Nov 22, 2019

Bret didn’t quite do that — but he now believes Trump should be removed from office

He accused Trump of turning us into old Ukraine before it tried to fight corruption—

It’s to the immense credit of ordinary Ukrainians that, in fighting Russian aggression in the field and fighting for better governance in Kyiv, they have shown themselves worthy of the world’s support. And it’s to the enduring shame of the Republican Party that they have been willing to debase our political standards to the old Ukrainian level just when Ukrainians are trying to rise to our former level.

The one way to stop this is to make every effort to remove Trump from office. It shouldn’t have to wait a year.

The import of the McGahn ruling isn’t McGahn, it’s that Bolton might simply take the lower court’s opinion as providing enough cover to comply with his own subpoena. Not that I’d count on it, he seems pretty conflicted between being perceived as loyal and wanting to tell his side of the story and not get smeared as part of the conspiracy to cover up these crimes. His mental calculous right now is probably preoccupied with figuring out which course of action will maximize his future book sales.

I would think that testifying in Congress and blowing the lid off all the bullshit he saw and had to deal with would be a great way to maximize any future potential book sales revenue.

Maybe, but right wing books are historically supported by massive bulk sales to PACs, so he’d be gambling on trading that guaranteed wingnut welfare for genuine market interest. He’d also be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life.

Good point, but I don’t know if the wingnut welfare part of his calculations applies so much anymore…..after all, Tucker Carlson called Bolton a “leftist” on his TV show, and I’d imagine by now, the Trumpites have come to view Bolton as nothing less than a traitor to their spray-tanned messiah.

If they haven’t already his defendants should counter sue immediately to lock him in, and then use these FOIA documents to target their discovery demands. They should fundraise on this strategy if necessary.

One thing I’ve noticed - and I’m sure others here have as well - is that no matter how absurd a conspiracy theory is (Alex Jones’ “gay frogs” and chemtrails, Trump’s Crowdstrike inanity, QAnon, etc.), when clear and concrete evidence surfaces that thoroughly debunks the CT, the believers simply end up doubling or tripling down in their belief. There is simply no level of evidence that will convince them otherwise…because they’d have to admit they were wrong.

I have no doubt that if Trump gets bounced out of office next year (or by some miracle removed from office via the Senate), he and his supporters will go their graves convinced with absolute certainty of a vast, far-reaching conspiracy to destroy them.

Remember how Obama simply waited to release his Birth Certificate until birtherism had become an established tenet of RWNJ doctrine and then the Internet went nuts “proving” that his BC was a fake?

Oh yeah, I remember. And that CT is still floating around to this day. Like you said, at this point, it’s an established tenet of RWNJ doctrine that Obama was not born in the USA…and there’s no amount of evidence that will convince the RWNJ’s otherwise.

Short summation of the wingnut response to the Horowitz report:

“The IG report’s gonna bring them all down! Obama, the Clintons, Comey, Page, Strzok, Mueller, they’re all gonna do time!”

“Uh, sorry, but it’s looking like the IG report will debunk most every CT ever spun around the Russia investigation. And the only guy facing potential criminal charges is some low-level agent.”

“Oh…well, that agent will turn evidence, that’ll lead to indictments for higher-ups, and we’ll have them all behind bars before it’s done!”

I don’t like the term “New Cold War”. Despite superficial similarities, Russia’s goals are not the same as the USSR. They do wish to reunite the old Russian Empire, but not to spread a worldwide political/economic ideology.

As for meddling in foreign elections, that is something that many nations do, including the USA. The disturbing part is how Americans are accepting or even actively soliciting such interference - and brazenly getting away with it.

Cold War doesn’t only apply to the Soviet Union. What makes this like the CW is we’re not dealing with conventional warfare. We’re fighting for democracy and pluralism while Putin is interested in the opposite. His goals are a new world where Russia dominates the conversation directly or through proxies.

I understand, it’s just that the term itself conjures images of the USSR.

Putin is promoting his own country’s interests, or at least his understanding of them, and having the US hamstrung by incompetence, corruption and political strife allows him to implement his domestic and international agenda with minimal interference.

The “cold” in Cold War referred to the fact that the two countries, while engaging in political and economic confrontation, weren’t firing weapons at each other, even if they might use proxies against each other. That term is still valid today as it was then.

It can also be used to describe what is happening here, kind of a Cold Civil War.

No, there is no competition to Moscow’s Mitch.

Mitch has no shame. He’ll complain about Washington Democrat’s being too partisan and then brag about what he did to Garland. He cost a honorable man his job simply for spiteful political reasons. Republicans can cry about Bork all they want but we heard why Robert Bork wasn’t fit for scotus. Garland? His sin was being appointed by Obama after a right wing favorite justice died and having the potential to swing the court back to a reasonable center that it has not during my lifetime.

Correct. And Putin is a product of that world. Trump isn’t. It’s probably why he’s so easy to play by Putin.

CNN)The White House helped arrange a phone call between Rudy Giuliani and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo the day after the President’s personal lawyer handed over materials with unproven claims about former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter, according to documents released by the State Department late Friday night.

The documents show that Pompeo spoke with Giuliani briefly twice in late March — both before and after he handed off a packet of information that included claims against the Bidens. Only the second conversation was facilitated by the White House.

The emails provide new insight into how Giuliani’s efforts were coordinated through the White House. Pompeo had previously attempted to distance himself from the packet of information on Biden that Giuliani had compiled

Yeah: that Daily Wire piece is not exactly a model of unbiased journalism: I noticed that their prime cite for Nunes’ comments is Breitbart, so there we are (and their harping on Nunes’ issues with “far-left network” CNN)…

I would think that Parnas’ allegations ought to be fairly simple to disprove: either Nunes was in Vienna on the dates alleged, or not. If not - well, Cow Man can’t be wrong ALL the time (no matter how hard he tries), and publishing the claim IS irresponsible journalism (though whether or not it rises to the level of actionable lawsuit is beyond me to guess). I really hope so: CNN has to know what they’re doing: but as that linked piece points out, they’ve had to retract stuff they’ve aired about Nunes before.

The thing is though, that the impeachment process has raised the stakes considerably: and by which I mean the GOP is going to be going into Desperation Mode (if they haven’t already): they are probably going to seize onto ANYTHING - and down to the typos/misspellings/wrong dates level, if need be - to try to deflect attention away from the President’s/Administration’/Party’s faults/wrongdoings. And do so at the loudest volume level their Noise Machine is capable of.

I know people make money off of ads, and for YEARS I refused to install an ad blocker. And how do you go after dark money in the US when the Barr Justice Department and the McConnell Senate are working for the oligarchs?

In any case, a reminder, Germany was on its knees in the 1920’s — within 10 years, it had become the dominant power in Europe. There is no reason to think that Putin will be replaced; he has managed to install his minions in England and the United States and that may assuage a majority of his population for their low standard of living and lack of freedom. Yes, Boris looks like he’s on the ropes — who knows how the December 12 election will work out? But Trump still retains his loyal toadies in Congress and they will protect him to the end — and if our economy remains strong, Trump may indeed weather this storm and bring a final end to the American experiment.

I binged watched the first 2 seasons of “Man in the High Castle” over the past week. It portrays a world under which most Americans accepted collaborating with and living under a white supremacist totalitarian genocidal regime, but then, again, many Nazi policies were inspired by American policies toward the disabled, African Americans, and native Americans. The Trump regime has shown that this is a realistic portrayal of how tens of millions of our fellow Americans would greet such tyranny.

People look at him like this untouchable, bulletproof dude. He’s probably as vulnerable to a good propaganda campaign as anyone else.

It’s tough to compete when a 3rd party is stacking the opponents deck against you.

I hate Chrome — too slow, kept eating up RAM. Deleted it from my computer. Use Safari, but then I’m on Mac.

The House Subcommittee on Elections (chair, Marsha Fudge) has issued a report that got both the Southern Poverty Law Center and Charlie Pierce writing this Saturday. It is in response to CJ John Roberts’ Shelby County decision. From Pierce’s Saturday essay, long quote but the essay is a LOT longer. If you feel I have quoted too much, since I can’t link to a RL, I will delete!

Fudge, however, had been doing more than all this. She is the chair of a House subcommittee on elections, and that subcommittee released a report this week about the impact of the Supreme Court’s 2013 decision in Shelby County v. Holder—namely, that the decision had declared open season on voting rights, and on any voters that Republicans and conservatives considered inconvenient. Ironically, the impetus behind the subcommittee came from the majority decision in Shelby County in which Chief Justice John Roberts, who had made a career out of trying to torpedo federal voting rights acts, suggested that the people who were demanding action against voter suppression go out and find more data. Fudge’s subcommittee called his bluff.

The subcommittee’s investigation covered seven states and the District of Columbia. It amassed some 3,000 pages of testimony and evidence. It found, unsurprisingly, that voter suppression had become general all over the country, and that the strategies behind it were becoming more sophisticated with every election cycle. This was a surprise to practically nobody, but the level of detail in the report makes it hard to ignore. The introduction to the report explains:

In particular, the Subcommittee found persistent discrimination in voting law changes such as purging voter registration rolls, cut backs to early voting, polling place closures and movement, voter ID requirements, implementation of exact match and signature match requirements, lack of language access and assistance, and discriminatory gerrymandering of legislative districts and the state, local, and federal level. The report also found Native Americans are disproportionately targeted and impacted by voter ID laws and polling place closures.

“Oh, we get more and more creative,” Fudge says. “I think the Supreme Court made a mistake in even suggesting we go out and get more data because now more states, I think, should be under the formula.

“I am not surprised, but I am appalled in what we do to our citizens. This nation was built on a kind of democracy that no other nation has. We hold ourselves out as the greatest democracy in the world. And yet we discourage people from voting. The top-line is that voter suppression is real. It is bigger and more pervasive than it was in 50 years. Since the Shelby decision, 26 states have passed laws making it more difficult to vote, and the ones that didn’t have still found ways to make it harder—change the date of when you can vote, change the voting locations, close the polling locations.

“I was in Texas and I found that there was one city where every citizen had to drive at least 30 miles. Indian reservations, some of those people had to drive more than an hour. It is unconscionable. We have done something no other nation has done. A lot of nations don’t allow people to vote. We have allowed people to vote and then taken it away.”
