Doubling every 8 years that much money invested back then would be 48 million now. So basic investment would pretty much explain it.

She has a lovely voice, but talk about sucking the fun out of a song.

Side note—until it appeared on some greatest hits albums, “Somebody’s Baby” was only on the “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” album. I was in a bar in London talking to a guy from Belfast who LOVED that song but couldn’t find it anywhere. When I got home, I sent him the CD. He was so excited. In return, he sent me “A Woman’s Heart,” and I then became a huge Delores Keane fan.

The new documents and Parnas proffer show that Giuliani started smearing Yovanovitch because she spoke the truth about corrupt official Shokin, who Giuliani and Nunes were rehabilitating as part of their hit job on Biden with Russian propaganda. They went through WH and Pompeo.

We need to stress the message that trained, experienced professionals are being smeared and driven from their posts because they will not go along with the President’s illegal actions.

The GOP counter-narrative is that of Patriots confounding the Deep State.

The GOP narrative is the usual projection, as everything they’ve accused the Obama admin in general and Joe Biden in specific is something they’ve been caught engaging in. Working with corrupt former officials to attack government agencies engaged in anti-corruption policies, corrupting Ukrainian officials in the new government to attain “exclusive” contracts with said government, destroying the reputation of officials who stand in their way in order to have them removed, and overall undermining Ukrainian confidence in their new government in order to stop anti-corruption efforts.

I have been thinking about the cybertruck some more, and I wanted to make another observation about it. One of the things we are used to in the design of current trucks, is the giant nose on the front. But it’s there to hold the engine and to position the radiator perpendicular to the flow of air. But what if you don’t need those?

It definitely has the feel of Musk controlling the design, but it would be interesting to give it to say a group of recent college grad engineers and tell them to design a new truck body since we have fewer constraints.

If we had a sane and sensible government, we would simply make all municipal vehicles electric: these vehicles do not travel long distances and are always in an urban area with access to charging sites.

We just need to achieve a certain critical density and the system will implement itself using those good old Market Mechanisms they are so big on

Problem is, the big corporations have no use for any Market they cannot dominate and direct to their own benefit, consumers be damned.

We have make sure to remember that the companies that implement the Green New Deal are still companies, not visionaries of a better future (dailykos.com):

After learning that the solar energy company Bright Power fired a dozen construction workers who were inspired to unionize by the transformative vision of a Green New Deal, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday demanded that the corporation immediately rehire the terminated employees and formally recognize their union contract.

“Many have told me they think the pro-justice and worker provisions in the Green New Deal are ‘unnecessary,’” Ocasio-Cortez, the lead sponsor of the Green New Deal resolution in the House, tweeted Friday. “Yet this example is why a just transition is vital. Without it, oil barons turn into energy barons, and workers are hurt all the same. Bright Power must be held accountable.”

As Motherboard reported Thursday, the New York City construction workers voted in April to form one of the first unions in the burgeoning solar energy industry.

“Workers decided to unionize following a couple work accidents and pressure from management to work outside in extreme weather conditions in the winter,” according to Motherboard. “When workers announced their intention to unionize, Bright Power hired Littler Mendelson—the world’s largest labor law firm representing management with ties to the Trump administration—to handle its union negotiations.”

On Monday, in the middle of negotiations for the first union contract, Bright Power announced its decision to fire the 12 workers—who made up the company’s entire in-house construction crew—and replace them with subcontractors.

I was pulling the sheets off my bed yesterday and noticed I was just about to wear a hole in the fitted sheet. I threw out a fitted sheet two weeks ago because it had holes worn into it. (Fitted sheets are not good for embroidery projects, either.) I can’t even remember when I bought these sheets, but it was before I bought the linen sheets (which I love but which are a pain in the azzzz to put on the bed and to wash) and the flannel sheets, which was about eight years ago.

So, basically, I need recommendations for cotton sheets, size full, preferably available in white, because my brother said he would buy them for me as a Christmas present. I’d rather get something I know someone here has tried and found out are just decent sheets that don’t pill. Wrinkling, I don’t care about that, I’m going to sleep on them.

“The most frustrating part about all of this is that they did not come check on us,” said mother KeeKee Todd. “They knew what happened and they did not come.”

The report goes on to say Terry and Gross told deputies they had not contacted their supervisor. When the deputy told them they should get out in front of it and let their supervisor know what happened, their response was “we are getting ready to go out.”

The deputy wrote in the report that neither of them acted like they were going to contact their supervisor.

The report stated the deputy contacted the on-duty supervisor of KSP Post 5, who told the deputy their department would handle the investigation.

KSP spokesman Sgt. Josh Lawson confirmed the case is under an administrative investigation, adding that the troopers aren’t working while it’s under review.

He said one of the main focuses of the investigation is the troopers’ response or lack thereof.

Quite true: even given that HUMONGOUS caveat in your lead off… //

Yet a part of the problem is also one of simple unavailability: I recall a week ago (?) someone here linked to an article about electric busses*: the figures were that in the US, there were currently only 650 in service: whereas in China the number was said to be 400,000.
The first thought that occurred to me was that a town/city wanting to shift to electric transit could simply buy busses from China, but the, that’s a whole nother issue…

I’m a big fan of LL Bean flannel sheets. I use them year-round. In the summer, the top sheet can act as a blanket on warm nights.

I get their catalog so I’ve been getting 20% discount codes this time of year. They also send me a $10 off code after I’ve purchased the sheets, and I used that to buy socks.

I know the company has some negative conservative baggage, but I do love those flannel sheets.

WireCutter is a product recommendation site affiliated with the New York Times. When looking to buy something I will often check their site for recommendations. Sometimes I agree, sometimes not.

I also check Consumer Reports. But I did not see anything Consumer Reports.

In general, with sheets, I tend to go inexpensive. That is whatever is on sale at Pennys or Target or Costco. As always “De gustibus, non est disputandum”.

“President Trump is increasingly morphing the White House residence into a second Oval. It’s become the place where Trump feels most productive, where he avoids meddling by his staff and where he speed-dials his network of confidantes, GOP lawmakers and TV pundits.”

Gonna take some exception here

The oval is where the president does his day job. Nothing more than that

Speed dialing x,y, and z is not doing the work of the president
The operative phrase is “meddling by his staff”. His. Staff.

I am so appalled at the actions of Trump that I can hardly speak. Emolument violations, not honoring our international relationships, destroying our career foreign service, and other cabinet departments, encouraging corporations to rape our natural resources, dividing the country more and more, not treating ANYONE with common courtesy, abandoning the Kurds (who fought and died alongside us), and now encouraging military members to ignore the code of military justice and the chain of command: what else, in God’s name, do Republicans need to hold this man responsible, for the first time in his life??? I’ve been sleeping on LL Bean 100% cotton percale sheets for years. They’re generously sized and a good weight. They last, and as an added bonus you can buy most of them separately so when the bottom sheet wears out you can buy a new bottom sheet.
In my case, I prefer blue and don’t care if all the sheets are the same shade, so I end up with nothing that quite matches, but it works for me.
Mr. C. has never expressed an opinion about sheets at any time in our marriage, so he must like them too.

I currently pay around €1.40 per liter (works out to $5.83 per gallon)

Americans would go to war before they paid prices like that, and gasoline is relatively cheap in Germany compared to most other European countries

Prices have gotten to close to $5/gallon in CA but, yeah, that would drive most Americans nuts.

The fleet at the state agency I work for is a combination of hybrid gas/electric and fully electric cars. We have to travel statewide so there are days when I drive 400 miles round trip without the ability to recharge, so I feel like I need to use a gas-assisted car.

My personal car is still a gas-powered vehicle, but I’m only filling it (12 gal.) with gas every 20-22 days. The 2009 car only has 62K miles on it so I’m not planning on replacing it for a long time. I’m feeling OK about still driving a gas powered car because I’m using it so frugally.

It seems like every time I answer a questionnaire about green travel habits, no one asks the question about how close you live to the places you need to visit daily, and I wish that held as much weight as the type of car you use.

re: #47 mmmirele

I used to buy LLBean bedsheets but they just don’t last anymore so I bought sheets from both Red Land Cotton and Boll & Branch. I’m please with both of them!

bollandbranch.com On sale right now.

We have to fill out a questionnaire every year at work regarding commuting and that’s part of the questions they ask. First they want to know how many miles your commute is, then, how long it takes, and then, what are your cross streets in the town you live in. I filled out the questionnaire before my hours changed at the beginning of the month. So it’s still 16 miles, but the commute went from 35 minutes to 55 minutes. Except that I’m not commuting right now due to the wonky knee.

As part of the “light walking” therapy, I’m going out to picket Apologia “church” [cult] this afternoon. As we used to say in Scientology days, they “pulled it in” by attacking me on Twitter.

This is the first time ever that I’ve gotten overtly religious on one of my signs. I really debated over whether to do this, but I think it’s time. Basically, these guys are all about Calvinism, the alleged “doctrines of grace” or “election” and they believe Jesus only died for the elect. That’s what I’m challenging in this sign. Just to be clear, though, I am not proselytizing anyone here or anywhere with this sign. This is just a Poke The Bear sign.

Of course, this is the standard “your church is a cult” sign.

I need to work up a sign especially for James White about his stone racism. That will get taped to the SUV along with my signs that have a distillation of Steven Hassan’s BITE Model of cults on them.

OH NO! If we go all-electric, we will have to invade Canada for its hydro-electric potential, Mexico for its sunshine, Ireland for its peat bogs.
Imagine the military expense! Who wants to see a predatory, resource-driven foreign policy like that?

I grew up in Ambridge PA. Before the 1964 Civil Rights Act was passed the town was segregated. The borough pool did not allow African Americans or Jews to go there. The JC Penney’s store did not allow African Americans or Jews to enter. But they could go to the Sears Roebuck store. Many places were “restricted” preventing Catholics, Jews and African Americans from entering. The school system was segregated as much as possible.

By the way our Congressman at the time, Frank Clark, was only one of two Northern Democrats who voted against the Civil Rights Act saying it went too far…

A thought on higher fuel prices.

A lot of non-urban folks heat their houses with fuel oil. Tripling the cost of fuel would raise their heating costs thousands of dollars a year. Replacing the heating system would also cost thousands of dollars.

I wonder if rural infrastructure and grid could sustain the electricity demands for all electric heating. And I wonder if a lot of the older housing stock could also manage it without extensive renovation beyond just furnace replacement.

As an aside, my ex’s parents who lived in rural Virginia had a wood fired boiler heating system.

You have my sympathy. I hope that the floor and ceiling are not badly damaged. Water can be quite destructive.

Years ago, I had water pooling around the base of the toilet bowl. So I pulled the toilet and replaced the wax seal. When it did not stop water pooling I figured it was above my paygrade so I called a plumber.

He also pulled the bowl looked at the wax seal and found it fine. Looking further, we concluded that the water was coming from condensation around the toilet water reservoir. I forget what was done to fix that, but I have not had problems since.

And, I agree, draining a toilet bowl is not a ‘joyful’ experience.

A bit of both I think. I put all the cat toys back into a box every week or two. And the cats fish them out on their own and play with them when I am not there - and some toys are favored over others.

And they also like getting me to go to certain places in the apartment and interact with them using some of the toys, or activities such as “move the stick under the throw rug so that I may stalk it”.

But of course, as a “leading” Republican Congressman, he won’t: just bash “the media” - so when CNN or somebody unearths his plane ticket to Vienna, he can just bluster, dissemble, insult and threaten some more. Or claim he was just going there for the sachertorte….

I enjoyed the series overall but found that the story line got a bit overloaded as the end approached.

If the Nazis from The Man in the High Castle had tried to invade our current parallel universe, they would have been chased back out by our Proud Boys and White Supremacists for being too liberal.

Seems you don’t get around much, Soledad. A 3mil stake at the beginning of a 32 year period, in CALIFORNIA, says a great deal about that 150mil.

It turns out to be about 13% per year return on average if you don’t invest anything else but don’t take anything out of that. I’m assuming they were able to put even more into it as it went on.

AM Radio yakkers are all up in their feels about the pending IG report drop, most assuredly head will roll and Obama, Hillary, and pretty much everybody else will go to jail.

Which means the opposite is true. Sounds like it’s going to be a dud.

But it plays well in the base areas since it reinforces that *every single politician* is corrupt and therefore Trump doing stuff is no different than any other one.

It’s just so frustrating to see us shit on allies because our executive branch is headed by a Putin loving asshole who is turn aided by parts of the legislative branch who care more about protecting him.

My cat seems to prefer to store her ‘cat toys’ under the refrigerator.

Although I have always wondered if my cat views ‘cat toys’ mostly as a way to amuse her human. Assuming, of course, that ‘amusement’ includes the act of retrieving the toys from under the fridge.

After my fetching cat, Hunter, died, my non-fetching cat, Xena, went around and found all the soft balls I would toss and Hunter would fetch them. She put them in my bed. I found them when I was stripping the bed to wash the sheets, and I busted up crying all over again.

AM Radio yakkers are all up in their feels about the pending IG report drop, most assuredly head will roll and Obama, Hillary, and pretty much everybody else will go to jail.

Which means the opposite is true. Sounds like it’s going to be a dud.

early reports say it will criticize “sloppyness”, and find that one low level employee who has since left modified some email evidence - obviously we’ll hear all about this - but the main point is that the report finds that the investigation was founded on a totally legal basis, and it’s instigation had nothing to do with the “dossier” which so gets up the noses of the trumpies

in related crazytown news, it’s widely touted that democrats “won’t dare” vote out a bill of impeachment, since the senate trial would then somehow magically be turned into a grand exposure of all the eeevil and bad things democrats have ever done, and the whole democrat party would go to jail the end

So this passed by my FaceBook feeds…

A prayer for all of you with Christmas lights outdoors:
Can’t you be kind and not use red and blue lights?
Every time I pass it, I get a mild anxiety attack, which results in me moving my foot off the accelerator and braking up, my beer tipping over, I have to fumble with getting my seatbelt on, I throw the phone on the floor and I almost throw out a whole joint through the window, at the same time it becomes an extra anxiety-provoking situation if my rifle under the seat is detected.
My nerves can’t handle it!
I hope you are understanding.
Merry Christmas wishes from Tomas 😉
