The impeachment Hearings have brought us one good thing: the level of discourse there is a lot more serious that what we have been getting on the social or broadcast media. We are seeing and hearing from experts who do not suffer fools, dissemblers or conspiracy theorists.

This puts the GOP at a disadvantage as that is the very air they breathe these days.

again, if Trump had not been so completely heavy-handed and cocksure that he could get away with it, he could have built in several layers of deniability: just “encouraging” Ukraine to open a broad range of corruption investigations, in which the Bidens would figure prominently, etc…

I really think that the professional diplomats were not just going to sit idly by and let him try to pull off such a brazen stunt when the least bit of thought or effort would have made it at least look like diplomacy and not extortion and abuse of power.

I’m well past the point of treating the GOP as honest brokers and that any of them will put the nation first. Have Parnas testify under oath first.

It’s time to treat the GOPers in Congress who were part and parcel of Trumpworld as accomplices, starting with Nunes. Make him testify under oath as to his actions. Call him to testify.

If he doesn’t like it? Too bad. Censure him for being directly involved. Then demand Rudy testify and if not, haul his ass to jail until he complies. The tactics have to be commensurate with the crimes and the outcomes.

Democrats better treat online space more seriously too - because it’s dangerous to ignore how Trump is using Facebook to his advantage.

If Bloomberg and Steyer are serious - that’s where they should spend their money. All of it.

Buy Fox. Go after the right wing echo chamber. Do all of it. And go after Trump directly. Start holding his cronies accountable for ignoring subpoenas. That any of them ignore it means all of them ignore it. There’s no teeth to the requests without consequences.

Make those consequences real and direct.

I teach rooms full of kids who would be delighted if Trump was a graduation speaker. They’re not bad kids. They’re wonderful kids and I love them all, but they’ve grown up in a way that has taught them to compartmentalize all kinds of shit.

The defeatism seems to take over when the news cycle slows down.

But look at what’s happened since Friday night - the Nunes revelations, Parnas’ offer to testify, Rudy’s crazy shit yesterday, and today the scramble to cover up what the White House knew to be illegal activity.

What’s the old saying - if you’re defending, you’re losing? They’ve been on the defensive since the House hearings started, and even before then they couldn’t come up with a cogent defense of Trump’s treason.

And so many of us are still ready to throw in the towel.

Just like pre-Blue Wave.
Just like pre-impeachment investigation.
Just like pre-impeachment hearings, and all the damaging testimony they yielded.

I don’t understand why we’re always so goddamn ready to lose.

I’ve worked at a couple of schools where the students were mostly conservative, and were working their way through a curriculum that does not synch with their world view. They learn to say ‘sir’ and open doors for faculty while despising it all behind the scenes.

About ten years ago there were a few anonymous college posting boards that caused real problems on campuses, especially smaller ones where lots of people knew each other. Under that gentile demeanor on the quad were many cases of devoted racists, sexist and homophobic entitled young men and women. The anonymous boards are gone—colleges learned to block them—but the students remain the same. Still, I have always treated each and every one with respect. It’s complicated.

Part of my motivations for being a liberdouchian early on was rebellion against my family and friends, and I stayed that way for some time out of intellectual laziness. It took Palin, climate change, and probably a little LGBT rights to slap me upside the face to force me to confront it. I also had a place I could work this through. Now when I deal with trolls or idiots online, instead of just tossing insults and telling them to F off, I ‘retaliate’ but doing a deep dive of facts and information. I may do this on Twitter, or I may do a post of FB that I title Memewatch or Conspiracy watch. From these ‘useless’ skirmishes and study up on stuff more and talk through issues, even though the twitter troll I’m dealing with has not capability or desire learn. I do it for me, and for the next person.

Yesterday around noon my power went out. I thought I must have overloaded the system. So I went down to the basement to check the breakers and all of them were in the right places. So I put on my jacket and grabbed my keys and checked the corner and sure enough the traffic lights were out. My whole neighborhood was without power. Most of my neighbors had already called Philadelphia Electric (PECO) and got the time of 215pm is when our power was to go back on. The power came back on at a few minutes after one. The big thing is that as neighbors (D’s and R’s) we used our resources and helped each other out.

I’m gonna be honest: that right there is exactly why I’m scared shitless about what will come out of 2020. It’s not that the Senate won’t convict Trump. That’s almost about a complete given at this point. It’s that the country is basically run by Fox News and the rest of the media, far from being adversarial, have decided wholesale to run interference for Trump and do everything they can to delegitimize the process from the start. Even when Dems go full bore on the offensive, the story is never about what the GOP has done, but what Dems haven’t done: convince rock solid immovable GOP votes to move, thus therefore they didn’t get “Real AMerica” to move and have proven themselves illegitimate failures.

It’s all about the immovability and impenetrability of the almighty narrative, facts and testimony be damned.

I’m working with a guy right now who is an unapologetic MAGAt. Reads Ann Coulter and Instapundit on his downtime, has a meme posted on his wall that Donald Trump is an unsung hero of 9/11 because Teh Mediaz conspired against him.

He’s a great guy. Been very supportive and professional to work with. Great sense of humor. But, in the back of my mind, he’s a guy who saw everything that went down last week and thinks “Well, there isn’t video of Donald Trump monologuing his evil plot like a third rate cartoon supervillian, so therefor everything is not true.”

He’s a guy utterly at peace with the fact Trump set up child concentration camps to blackmail Democrats into going along with draconian immigration laws.

If that makes a judgmental, horrible person, so be it. But when push comes to shove, for this guy, there is no bridge too far for Trump to cross. That’s a problem.

Think of this when Trump speaks at his next fetid campaign rally or Two Minute Hate, if you prefer.

A friend who read the book was very enthusiastic at the beginning but by the end he texted me that he ultimately found it very disappointing and not worth the read. Some of the reviewers at major publications were harshly critical, partly because, in order to protect their identity, the author bleached details from their narration. Other than commenting on its existence, the author failed to provide any insight in Trump’s devotion to Putin.

I wonder if one reason for the hostile reception is that other books (some may not be so reliable) provide more details on Trump’s actions; for example, I am enjoying Michael Wolff, even though his accuracy may be suspect, but then, as Bill Maher might say, “I don’t know it for a fact, I just know it’s true!”

He’s a great guy. Been very supportive and professional to work with. Great sense of humor. But, in the back of my mind, he’s a guy who saw everything that went down last week and thinks “Well, there isn’t video of Donald Trump monologuing his evil plot like a third rate cartoon supervillian, so therefor everything is not true.”

He’s a guy utterly at peace with the fact Trump set up child concentration camps to blackmail Democrats into going along with draconian immigration laws.

If that makes a judgmental, horrible person, so be it. But when push comes to shove, for this guy, there is no bridge too far for Trump to cross. That’s a problem.

the fact that someone is ‘good’ in certain settings or aspects of their lives, unfortunately is not an indicator of anything and is meaningless

Exactly the opposite of what Trump would have done: he would have demanded the soldier be sentenced to a long prison term for any criticism. For all his flaws, JFK was a man of principle and character who believed in our nation and worked to improve its policies toward all citizens.

Let’s hope that our democracy survives its latest experiment with fascism and white supremacy.

OTOH, I do consider each of these people, including your friend, as someone who would have wholeheartedly supported Hitler, at least until he was losing the war. They don’t think of themselves that way — but they definitely are cult members who support evil and who are eagerly participating in the destruction of everything good about this nation. It is astounding how these people all seem to be blind to Trump’s devotion to Putin, although as the Moscow 8 have demonstrated, they may share this devotion.

I went out and protested at Apologia. It was pretty chill, except for the following:

* One guy saying (except for two points) that God tells us to do all the things that are in the “Behavior Control” portion of Steven Hassan’s BITE Model. (Top left in picture below.) You know, I’d questioned whether I should tape those signs on my car, but WOW that was an amazing reaction. The two points he didn’t agree with were the “deprive sleep” and “exploit you financially.” But the rest of it, “God has told people to do them.”

* This guy also said that we shouldn’t believe people who aren’t saved (like Steven Hassan, I presume).

* A woman gave me her anti-abortion testimony, about how she “killed her baby” and now she goes out to the Tempe Planned Parenthood and harasses women. I asked her why she shouldn’t be executed. Well, because Jesus has forgiven her, that’s why. This church still believes women should be executed for getting abortions, but they have the “Get Out Of The Death Penalty Free With Jesus” card, which I find reprehensible. If you really believe this stuff, you should be willing to deal with the consequences of your belief.

Frankly, I would have rather have spent the time watching Godzilla stomping on Tokyo, but my knee is MUCH BETTER and I was able to stand without pain the whole 45 minutes.

The only family member loons I have are brother and sister-in-law. She’s totally nuts and if politics come up, I step outside with my nephew (her son, who thinks she’s a whack job and a pathological liar.) With my brother, who I refer to as a “reluctant Republican” who mostly fears being killed in his sleep by SIL, if he starts, I shake his hand, thank him for his service, and laugh.

I’ll get to see them all this week for Thanksgiving. They (bro and SIL) usually keep their mouths shut because they are VASTLY outnumbered, as in it’s however many other people are there, usually 15-20, on one side of the divide, and the two of them on the other.
