Here We Go: The Secretary of the Navy Just “Resigned” Over Trump’s Love of War Criminals

Politics • Views: 24,661

This is a hell of a non-resignation resignation letter.

So now the Trump-thing is sowing chaos in the military with his fetishistic idolization of war criminals. Trump is doing a great job of demoralizing, deconstructing, and destroying all the branches of government. He’s the Midas of corruption.

Unless every member of the military quits at once - and unless everyone quits, enlisted people can’t - there will have to be people at some level that act as bulwarks against the shit coming from this administration.

Given the intransigent Trumpers, what has to happen to move them even a bit is for Trump to be publicly humiliated.

I’m convinced that Trumpers are such not for any policy reason, not for any historical polity issues.

Instead, Trumpers are full-in on the strong-man persona.

The only way to pry them out of their cult-mentality is to show Trump in public as humiliated, disgraced, and shown to be weak.

I got QL’ed.

I went out and protested at Apologia. It was pretty chill, except for the following:

* One guy saying (except for two points) that God tells us to do all the things that are in the “Behavior Control” portion of Steven Hassan’s BITE Model. (Top left in picture below.) You know, I’d questioned whether I should tape those signs on my car, but WOW that was an amazing reaction. The two points he didn’t agree with were the “deprive sleep” and “exploit you financially.” But the rest of it, “God has told people to do them.”

* This guy also said that we shouldn’t believe people who aren’t saved (like Steven Hassan, I presume).

* A woman gave me her anti-abortion testimony, about how she “killed her baby” and now she goes out to the Tempe Planned Parenthood and harasses women. I asked her why she shouldn’t be executed. Well, because Jesus has forgiven her, that’s why. This church still believes women should be executed for getting abortions, but they have the “Get Out Of The Death Penalty Free With Jesus” card, which I find reprehensible. If you really believe this stuff, you should be willing to deal with the consequences of your belief.

Frankly, I would have rather have spent the time watching Godzilla stomping on Tokyo, but my knee is MUCH BETTER and I was able to stand without pain the whole 45 minutes.

If she’s going to believe in executions, then she doesn’t get to get out of one. Accepting Jesus doesn’t get you out of murdering someone. (I think the death penalty should be abolished period, but people don’t get to have beliefs that don’t apply to them.)

My sister did the same thing. She had to have an abortion because the fetus died in the 8th month. Then she got totally brainwashed by the Religious Right and for the rest of her life she was a rabid opponent of abortion picketing clinics and calling for the execution of doctors performing it. She praised Scott Roeder for killing Dr. Tiller and spent e-mails calling for Roeder to be pardoned.

This is why I NEVER want anything to do with Xtians. I truly despise them!

As far as trucks go, That Tesla fever-dream packs a lot of load-bearing and towing punch for less than the cost of a fitted-out F-150. Of course, it’s going to be a long time until they get their trucks, and it’s going to have things like mirrors and windshield wipers stuck on to it’s austere surfaces.

I was trying to find info on YouTube about it today and SOOOO many of the posts were by “influencers” who want to own the truck just to say they own the truck or have a picture of themselves posing with the truck. That unveiling event looked nauseating.

Or, as Tom Paxton said back in 19fucking65:

The traditional German cop-out is all too easy to spot. With the soldiers it was obedience to orders; with the civilians it was variations on a theme of ‘I was never a Nazi’ and ‘We had no idea of what was going on.’

In Mississippi we have families who ‘know nothing’ of lynchings, beatings and murders. In any case, there is ‘nothing they can do to stop it.’

Even our establishment press has published pictures of South Vietnamese troops ‘interrogating’ a captured Viet Cong with the help of the water torture, beating them and dispatching them with .45’s.

Tell me you support the government’s policy if you like, but don’t try to tell me you didn’t know what was going on.”

The tri-motor will likely have over 500 miles of range. That’s pretty awesome. The smart air suspension and on-board air compressor would come in pretty handy too.

As far as appearance, they’ll also have a black one too. That may be less shocking. lol

Not exactly what Trump wanted. Trump wants to impose his will on the entire Navy chain of command. Spencer wanted to find a way to thread the needle, allowing Gallagher to retire with his trident while also letting the Navy retain some fictional notion of having gone through their own independent review process resulting in a preordained outcome of letting him retain his trident.

Fox & Friends preview an interview with Rick Perry, where he says that Trump is “the chosen one” and “sent by God to do great things”

Pete Hegseth: “God has used imperfect people forever,” but what Trump “has withstood is unlike what really any other mortal could understand”…

Trump was sent by God — to punish us for our arrogance and belief in our superiority and rectitude. We were given a flawed but great Constitution, a system of government, and leaders who tried to improve the world — and then thought we didn’t need to exert ourselves to maintain them — That magically our heritage would protect us — that our institutions could stand by themselves. And then an ignoble conman with no credentials or ethics managed to get elected President, and our system is rapidly imploding.

The 2000 election was a warning to us all that we did not take to heart: the candidate with fewer votes won and we ignored the implications of that flaw in our Constitution. Of course, it is still appalling that over 62 million Americans voted for him — there is clearly something wrong with us and with our processes.

They think of it only in terms of whomever wears the Republican crown. If Trump were successfully impeached and removed from office, there would be articles lamenting his fall from spiritual grace and how his sins caught up to him, and now we should all exonerate and worship Mike Pence, the Holy Warrior of Indiana, Anointed One of the Republican Party, who stands against abortion.

There will be plenty of Radical Christians who will threaten to fight to the death to put God’s Anointed King back on the throne!

Believe it or not, I’m going to dispute this one. No doubt there would be some - I’m not naive. However, the general teaching of the religious right has been submission to the governing authority, whomever it may be. They are far more likely to roll with the punches in an attempt to stabilize around the Next Best Thing (tm), and doubly so since Mike Pence is a self-righteous son of a bitch whom they all adore and would welcome in the nation’s highest office, as opposed to Trump, whom they tolerate solely for the sake of their single-minded cause.

I shot a high school football playoff game on Friday night for the local fish wrap, and one of the teams was the Texas School for the Deaf (from Austin). Every player and coach is totally deaf. I’m kneeling down about to shoot the first play and right next to me a BOOM! goes off scaring the shit out of me. Then BOOM! again. So the players know when the snap is, a guy on the sidelines hits a huge bass drum, sending vibrations the players can feel, and it was LOUD, I mean louder than a shotgun. The first hit, the players set, then the next one (or the next) is when they snap the ball. Sometimes the delay will draw the defense offsides. The kids lost the game, but they could really play. And it turns out a short documentary was made about the football team. It’s called “4 Quarters of Silence,” and you can watch it on Amazon.

I’ve recounted an incident in Vietnam in which a sad sack from a unit down-country showed up at our unit with one of these unpleasant collections. Our CO made him dig a 6 foot deep hole and bury them. Another time a whole chopper full of ghouls arrived with a couple of NVA skulls lashed to their skids. One of them had a bullet hole through the forehead. Someone, presumably one of the ghouls, had painted a red star around it. Yet again, the CO ordered a hole dug and the trophies were duly buried.

Trump is seen as God’s Anointed One and they are prepping themselves to defend the tangerine tyrant against liberals, Satanists, the godless, etc., etc. I don’t have any of these people on my FB anymore, but I am friends with people who do, and the stuff they share is eyebrow-raising. [Embedded content]

I don’t think it happened. It was inserted into the text by the anonymous writer of Mark (and then ended up in the other gospels) for some reason, and it may have been to promote a kind of supersessionism, in that the Jews were found wanting because there was no fruit on the fig tree. Obviously, I find that interpretation obnoxious. To be blunt, I find the whole story to be obnoxious, because the fig tree did nothing to Jesus.

The thing you have to keep in mind about the New Testament texts is that these guys were fighting their own little wars in what they wrote down. Mark’s Jesus is very much a human being, but John’s Jesus is divine from the beginning of the universe. The writer of Luke/Acts tries to make the founding of the early church as smooth as glass, but Paul’s letter to the Galatians makes it clear that he wasn’t on the same page as some of the other church leaders. The letter of James complains that Paul writes stuff that is hard to understand. And so on and so forth. If you think of these as blog rants, dashed off to correspondents the writers may or may not have met, and not as documents meant for the ages, you’re probably getting a better sense of what the documents were.

Interesting stats about Georgia:

“Georgia’s voting rolls have swollen over the last 10 months. Many of those newly-registered voters are new to the state, and Democrats think they’re going to help flip the state next year … The surge is rooted in a new state law that automatically registered hundreds of thousands of new voters …

The state says more than 310,000 new voters have registered in 2019. Of those, 47 percent of them are people of color. Another 45 percent are under age 30, according to Fair Fight Georgia, the liberal group launched by Democrat Stacey Abrams.”

11alive.com

“In Georgia, new citizens constitute more than 440,000 potential voters, the group estimated. President Donald Trump won the state by roughly 200,000 votes in 2016.”

Neumann, according to the Vanity Fair article, believed that WeWork “was even capable of solving the world’s thorniest problems. Last summer, some WeWork executives were shocked to discover Neumann was working on Jared Kushner’s Mideast peace effort. According to two sources, Neumann assigned WeWork’s director of development, Roni Bahar, to hire an advertising firm to produce a slick video for Kushner that would showcase what an economically transformed West Bank and Gaza would look like.”

144
Joe Bacon 🌹  Nov 24, 2019 • 9:19:45pm

And from the same article…

Then, after October 18, 2018, when it came to light that “Saudi agents tortured dissident and Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi and carved his body with a bone saw, likely on order from the crown prince himself, Neumann told George W. Bush’s former national security adviser Stephen Hadley that everything could be worked out if bin Salman had the right mentor. Confused, Hadley asked who that person might be, according to a source familiar with the meeting. Neumann paused for a moment and said: ‘Me.’”

Good description. Matthew’s Jesus was a very good Jewish man who didn’t mind the Pharisees, he just didn’t think they were hardcore enough ;) and thought the break with the synagogues could be mended. John was also late enough that the the break was final and that drives the (passive aggressive?) antagonism that would form the core of Christian antisemitism for the next 2000 years.

A German state museum with one of the biggest collection of baroque treasures in Europe has been robbed, police said Monday, with media estimates of losses of up to a billion euros.

The Green Vault at Dresden’s Royal Palace, which is home to around 4,000 precious objects made of ivory, gold, silver and jewels, was broken into early Monday morning.

Police confirmed a “break-in at the Green Vault” and said the thieves were on the run.

Officials did not give an estimate but Bild newspaper reported that “antique jewellery worth around a billion euros has been stolen”.

In local news a second cannabis shop will open in Central Contra Costa County. Opened by the son of a former congressman.

The Martinez City Council has chosen the operator for its second retail marijuana dispensary - a firm led by the son of retired longtime U.S. Rep. George Miller.

The council voted 4-0 on Wednesday to award a “conditional certificate” allowing Embarc to apply for a commercial cannabis operating permit.

Mayor Rob Schroder, who sells insurance for a living, recused himself from Wednesday’s vote, as a partner in one of the proposed dispensaries (not Embarc) has a business relationship with Schroder.

Embarc was one of four firms selected as finalists to receive this conditional certificate, and the highest-ranked proposal based on a list of criteria set by the city.

The owner and CEO of Embarc is George Miller IV, the son of U.S. Rep. George Miller and himself a onetime state Assembly candidate.

I dunno, they will have to beat the prices and selection of the delivery services currently available.

To live in the south-east of the US is to understand the impact of marijuana prohibition. I had the fortunate experience to grow up in California in the 70s. I first smoked pot in 1970. Other than 10 formative years of my kids I smoked pretty much every day. A few of the later years of my daughters youth I said, “Fuck it, there’s no difference between my stoned years and my straight years”, so I started smoking weed again. I just hid it, but around my youngest 17th year I told them. Now we have marijuana delivery and my youngest daughter got me to switch to the service over my black market sources.

Of course the richer connected people are the ones with the power to put together a proper application qualifications for a business over some dumb stoner whose mom died and left him a a small estate of $300k. It’s capitalism. you don’t back losers or the economy suffers.

Was that coherent? I have a hard time explaining my thinking. I think in parallel which makes it hard to create a single thread of my thoughts.

I grew up in Gary, Indiana, which was so overrun with heroin and hard drugs that the police hardly paid any attention to marijuana.

I moved to Arizona. Things were also pretty easy there until for a while but I remember the total crackdown that hit in the 80’s and how getting busted with even a personal stash could get you time in jail and the police confiscating your property.

Been hearing more about the actual Trump Cult, the rapidly spreading belief among evangelicals that Trump was literally chosen by God to be some kind of savior.
It occurred to me that veteran Russian operatives, those with Cold War experience, must have been amazed, not to mention delighted, at how easy it was to buy off and otherwise compromise Bible thumpers. Compared to the kind of hard-sell marks they targeted in the Cold War, journalists, academics, labor activists, etc. the thumpers were not just willing whores, they were cheap ones.

Shaggy dog story…

In 1976 we were sitting in Union Square in SF, a good size group of our class at Control Data Institute, smoking weed. Two SFPD motorcycle cops drove into the middle of the square and got off their bikes and came up to our group. I had a roach up to my lips on a 1 meter alligator clip multi-meter cable. I tossed it and tried to cover it with my foot, a large red wire sticking out and a lung full of pot. Cop says, What’s that under your foot?” I said, “Nothing.”. exhaling a big cloud of smoke into his face. He made me show him, asked if we had any more, I said, “No”. Hr said, “get rid of it”, so I shredded the roach.

He said it wasn’t worth the paperwork to arrest us. He asked who we were and we told him we were CDI students. He said, “I hope you never have anything to do with any computers I ever have to deal with.”

I went on to a career in computerized traffic signal control systems.

The new year happened and the law to decriminalized weed went into effect and a woman in the following class got caught and was issued a citation. she was with us the first time, too.

The Evangelical agenda isn’t their real objective, it is simply a contrived means to an end, the end being power. There is a lot of documentation for how Fundy leaders cooked up their anti-abortion position out of whole cloth after Roe v. Wade. The purpose was to replace racial segregation as a key unifying issue among conservative churches.

I can’t help but wonder if abortion somehow disappeared as a key unifier among the Fundies…what would replace it? Would it be anti-LGBTQ? Anti-Catholic or minority religion bashing? Would they simply revert back to racial segregation or pursue some variant of white ethnocentrism?

221
Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel  Nov 25, 2019 • 6:26:41am

It may be over-reach but I am wondering if the war-criminal pardons are not somehow related to an effort to further legitimize the privatization of our military missions. Mercenary kingpin Erik Prince has proposed an elaborate plan for privatizing operations in Afghanistan, for example. The greatly increased use of contractors, including in combat roles, was a striking feature of DoD policy under Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld and an obvious long term objective of conservative security policy.

Or, he’s so paranoid that he can’t leave the East Wing (the residence) of the WH, because he doesn’t even trust his own advisers at this point since everyone is smelling the chum in the water as impeachment closes in and Trump’s key advisers (Perry, Pompeo, Pence, Rudy, Mulvaney, etc.) are all directly implicated along with members of Congress (Nunes moo).

Interesting numbers, and an explanation why Biden is drawing so much AA support and not just because of Obama:

Meanwhile, 57 percent of African-American primary voters are in the 50-and-older age group which is 6 points higher than other Democratic primary voters.

Older voters are generally less eager to embrace big changes.

Among African-American primary voters, 61 percent label themselves as moderate or conservative. That’s 16 points higher than the rest of the Democratic primary electorate, whose moderate/conservative figure is 45 percent.

He had to take the short rear stairs off of AF1 last week, closely followed by the WH physician, and he has been seen dragging his right foot, along with some balance issues.

Something significant happened 8 days ago and we are being lied to.

I forgot the exact medical term, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a mini-stroke.

I don’t doubt that Fundy sleaziness and opportunism had been identified by analysts beforehand, but I also think it was pretty far outside the actual operatives’ experience and they would therefore have been surprised that it actually worked, or possibly at the magnitude of how well it worked.

I would also like to learn more about clandestine Soviet support for the far right well back in the Cold War. The right was fanatically and noisily anti-communist, of course, but their activities would still have served several Soviet objectives. The first would be to encourage extreme isolationism. The John Birch Society was, and still is, notably isolationist. They opposed not just the Vietnam war but the NATO alliance and even NORAD and the Rio Pact. The Republican right had very deep roots in the pro-German isolationist movement of the early 40s and organizations like the Ku Klux Klan have no comprehension of foreign alliances or common interests at all.

Another Soviet objective would have been to discredit anti-communism in general by associating it with racism. In this the Klan, the National Review, and many other right-wing stalwarts were very helpful. Soviet propaganda always put great emphasis on the radically anti-communist Klan in particular.

I think we might find out more if a new Democratic administration, hardened by the Trump disaster, decided to quit giving these traitorous bastards a pass on their constant subversion of American ideals.

re: the pardon power and those involved in conspiring with him or lying to protect him

what if the President’s lawyers point out to him that suborning perjury, and then pardoning it, could lay the groundwork for a slam-dunk obstruction of justice charge as soon as he’s out of office?

But if Trump uses the power in a fashion that appears abusive, particularly if he happens to do so right before resigning or being removed from office, it is entirely possible a court could step in and invalidate the pardon.

no of course it’s not solid - this is all speculation on new territory - using the power in a way it’s never been used and likely never even contemplated before.

- but it’s mainstreaming, and sure, others will disagree - ‘the pardon power is absolute’ etc - that’s what it *says* (or something). but 2A anyone?

oh, there’s more - and this bit re what would Roberts do in a senate trial re subpoenas

if asked to back the Democrats’ subpoenas, John Roberts will have to decide what he wants to do. To us, it seems unlikely that he would refuse, because if Trump were then acquitted, half the country would blame Roberts for taking sides. He certainly doesn’t want that. Besides, if the Democrats got really angry, they could impeach him. All it takes, after all, is 218 votes in the House. He absolutely certainly doesn’t want that, even if there is no chance of his being convicted, as that would further politicize a Court whose reputation is already shaky.

It may be over-reach but I am wondering if the war-criminal pardons are not somehow related to an effort to further legitimize the privatization of our military missions.

It is all about rebranding our armed forces to work for the highest bidder, and people with morals or principles that get in the way of blind obedience are a hindrance to that goal.

next (there was lots of coffee)

yes, some house R’s voting to impeach would be nice

No. That is not where we are.

Reality is Dems won the house. That’s all we got.

Reality is ensuring that the case is strong, tough and clear.
Reality is that the R votes are seen as clearly craven and to ensure that they own them.

They must be seen as accomplices and co-conspirators, that makes them tainted as jurors. They are also overtly bribed jurors.

lastly, (unless something breaks)

on this moronic idea from kennedy: “maybe ukraine did it”

- we should investigate and find out is not ‘proof’.
it’s not even the equivalent of probable cause.
And no; “appearance of impropriety’ is not enough.

multiple investigations all reached the same conclusion. the russians did it* - based on evidence collected and review-able. that’s how this works.

hence it’s your ‘maybe’ vs investigative conclusions.

maybe ukraine did it = maybe martians did it.

you want to investigate? go ahead. oh, you’re not in charge? Elections…

Talk to your buddies in the senate - they know how being in charge works.
Maybe they’ll pick it up. Oh, they did?
Knock yourselves out.

*whether trump et al were complicit was not proven by mueller because the white house didnt cooperate with mueller - they withheld documents and witnesses.

that’s not ‘i didnt do it’. that’s ‘you couldn’t prove it’

Government investigation into Iraqi defence minister’s Swedish citizenship

The Iraqi Secretary of Defense, Najah al-Shammari, is under investigation in Sweden for benefit and census fraud by having been the Iraqi secretary of defense and been on sick pay and officially lived in Sweden at the same time he lived in Iraq and worked as the Secretary of Defense.

There also are increasing questions about how he gained his Swedish citizenship after only 4 years, and crimes he has been suspected of during his time in Sweden. The discovery was made by a journalist working for Agence France-Presse news agency.

There is also a fresh preliminary investigation for crimes against humanity (SFS 2014:406 prohibits genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes).

How did the GOP come to back Trump’s pardons of multiple war criminals?

That’s the only thing to note here. Trump has now pardoned multiple war criminals, overriding the rulings and findings under the UCMJ. None of these people are innocent - and to receive a pardon they have to allocute to the crime under Burdick.

They broke the law, ignored the chain of command, and then went after the Navy leadership who wanted to preserve morale and lawful orders but Trump undermined all of it by amplifying these extremists views.

The Britannic was of course one of sister ships of the Titanic. The other sister ship being the Olympic. The Olympic was the first to launch and also the only one to not sink. It stayed in service until the 1930s before being retired in favor of more modern vessels.

Another interesting fact: One of the Britannic survivors was a nurse named Violet Jessop, who had ALSO survived the sinking of the Titanic. Lucky lady, it seems.

- to protect your job - cowardice as you say
- to protect yourself - maybe anon just ‘knew’ though at the time, the op-ed was before trump’s public reaction to the WB.

- even avarice like ‘i could get a book deal’ is a form of cowardice

Yeah, the Presidents habit of siccing the attack dogs on anyone who attacks him publicly would be enough for me to seriously consider go anonymous on something like that.

. I suspect, based on my own close reading of the text, that the author is an apolitical retired Navy commander who became chief speechwriter for former Defense Secretary James Mattis. If so, he behaved ethically when he wrote an unsigned op-ed and contracted to expand it into a book.

If this is true, then he was, in fact, being ethical. He isn’t a political hired gun who came in with the administration and stayed for the grift….again, if true.

If he found all this distasteful, he could have resigned and not taken the job and said as much.

By sticking it out, he continued to enable the corruption and criminality he saw all around him.

I believe he no longer works there at all. If it is Snodgrass, he already wrote one book about some of this experience and is likely getting additional inside info from others as noted in the article. The anonymous tag would be an additional layer of secrecy to protect sources.

Also, basic functionaries still have to make the apparatus of government work. How far down the food chain should people be resigning? The rest of the Joint Chiefs of Staff should walk out today IMHO…but should their staff leave? How many officers should resign commissions? Should the WH chef and porters all give notice? A speech writer for Mattis does not have the ethical obligation that a cabinet member has.

Monkey see, monkey do:

The Louisville Courier-Journal reports that Bevin has issued a full pardon to Paul Donel Hurt, who in 2001 was convicted of three counts of sodomy in the first degree and two counts of sexual abuse in the first degree.

Bevin justified the pardon by saying many observers, including the judge who oversaw Hurt’s sentencing, believe that he was wrongfully convicted.
