Everyone except some guy from CalFire who was on NPR this morning pointing out that if it gets dry again all bets are off. Nat’l Weather Service is calling for more rain this weekend, so I think we can, in fact, relax. (Except for the mudslides mentioned by Freetoken.)

I’m just happy to have dirt washed off everything.

Looks like we’re going to have a very wet Friendsgiving here in Los Angeles. I already have the Sweet Potato pie in the refrigerator, an Edwards ham is in the oven being baked basted with a brown sugar/cardamon/vanilla bean glaze. Tomorrow I bake the coconut custard pie. and Friendsgiving morning the biscuits go in the oven which will be served with Harry & David Apple Butter.

These people entirely think in terms if what’s happening to them. Until Trump affects them personally, they don’t really care what happens.

I work with a lot of people in that group, who are not only college educated, but many of them have masters degrees. And the only thing that will probably change their view is when Trump ends America’s involvement in NATO, and suddenly our parent defense contractor suddenly doesn’t need as many workers.

Here’s an “only in Germany” story for you…..

A German pensioner lost tens of thousands of euros at the weekend after leaving it on the roof of his car in a moment of forgetfulness.

The 69-year-old man withdrew €20,000 ($22,000) from a bank in Witten, North Rhine-Westphalia, at about 3.40 p.m (14.40 UTC) on Friday, Bochum police said in a statement released on Tuesday.

He placed the money in an envelope and then put it on the roof of his car before pulling off.

The man realized his mistake as he got out of his car a short while later in Annen — to find the envelope with the cash had blown off.

Yeah, I don’t see that happening. As much as House Dem leadership likes playing things safe, they also realize they only get one bite at this particular apple. Building up the importance of impeachment and the necessity to hold Trump accountable, only to settle for censure would pretty much be the end of it all. Nobody would take such talk later seriously, nor would the public be as supportive the second go around. It’s pretty much now or never, either this is going to the Senate or Trump gets a pass.

Tying everyone up before an election, impeachment exasperation will set in and could turn everyone quite negative. Fight the battles you can win. So, in humorous news out of the Czech Republic, a hospital in the city of Havlíčkův Brod was having a problem with customers in the hospital restaurant stealing coffee spoons. So, they had a small hole drilled in the center of the spoon to make them unappealing.

Except now, the customers are stealing them because they’re “unique”. LOL it’s like something straight out of The Good Soldier Švejk.

Here’s an excerpt, translated into English:

Hundreds of teaspoons have passed under the hands of hospital handymen. They drilled a small hole in each teaspoon with a lathe in the workshop. When mixing tea or coffee, the buttonhole doesn’t matter. However, it is very difficult to take a drink with it “by the teaspoon”.

Over time, however, it turned out that the hospital’s original idea was only half successful. The number of stolen spoons decreased rapidly, but the hassle has not completely disappeared.

“Customers are no longer taking spoons to use them at home. But sometimes they take it because it is a rarity that it does not see anywhere else”, said Petra Černo.

More people support impeach and removing Trump and than they did Clinton. I’ve seen polls consistently at about 50%. To put things in perspective Bill Clinton was at 29%. And this whole deal is much more serious than Bill perjuring himself over an affair. Plus more stuff comes out. You need to impeach Trump now not in the hope the Senate convicts but you create a precedent against future power hungry executives. Would it be nice if the Senate convicted? Absolutely but you can argue that Senate Republicans have ignored Trumps wrongdoings purposefully. Nothing in the hearings has strengthened Trump’s defenses. A lot has weakened it however.

Public support for impeaching President Donald Trump has tracked steadily higher over the past few weeks while a U.S. House of Representatives committee held a series of televised impeachment hearings, according to a Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll released on Tuesday.

The latest poll, conducted on Monday and Tuesday, found that 47% of adults in the United States felt Trump “should be impeached,” while 40% said he should not.

The result, combined with Reuters/Ipsos polling over the past several weeks, showed that the number of Americans who want to impeach the president increasingly outnumbers those who do not.

Just before the hearings started on Nov. 13, the Reuters/Ipsos poll found that “net support” for impeachment, which is the difference between the number who support impeachment and the number who oppose, was 3 percentage points.

That increased to 4 points after the first week of hearings, and then to 5 points as the second week of hearings started. The latest poll shows that net support for impeachment is now at 7 points.

We are inching towards that figure in polling of impeachment and removal from office.

This is the result of not only the two weeks of hearings thus far, but the weight of the facts, evidence, and sheer criminal conduct by those in Trumpworld to date.

You don’t prevent people from testifying who’d clear you of wrongdoing.

That makes no logical sense whatsoever. You would cooperate with investigators if you did nothing wrong. Why raise suspicions of malfeasance by preventing everyone around you from testifying by claiming bogus absolute immunity and other such bulkshit excuses.

If any of the following could exonerate Trump, Trump would allow them to testify under oath to that. But he, and they, know that none of this exonerates Trump (or his cronies). They’re all directly implicated in multiple crimes. Trump doesn’t do misdemeanors. He engaged in felony conduct - high crimes conduct. Impeachable conduct.

The conduct that you remove someone from office for.

All the obstruction, witness tampering, interfering in official investigations, is to sustain Trump’s stay in office - and to get him reelected. He’s losing court fights almost daily around this, but the strategy is to string this out past election day 2020 - to win by losing.

He’s got a chance at that given that he’s packed the Supreme Court with majority right wingers. And Gorsuch and Kavanaugh will get to weigh in on the subpoenas issue and Congressional oversight and emoluments, etc.

They have a shot at rubber stamping an imperial presidency, which essentially means game over for this nation (as long as the GOP control - because we all know these rules apply only for a GOPer - the moment a Democrat even hints at using the constitutional powers of the Executive, the GOP will move to impeach/remove or otherwise hamstring just as they’re doing at the state level when GOPers lose governors races to Democrats).

A few years back, there was a massive fire/explosion at a West Texas chemical plant. Lax oversight and inspections played a role in that disaster.

The Texas legislature and governor did nothing to tighten oversight.

This morning, there was yet another major chemical plant explosion and fire. The explosion rattled buildings and broke windows as far as 40 miles from the plant. Multiple casualties were reported.

Trump’s EPA is ignoring oversight and enforcement at a dangerous clip. Trump is gutting the regulatory and oversight of businesses so that millionaires like himself can profit, but everyone else shoulders the burdens.

We are going to see a lot more of this in coming years, thanks to a right wing Supreme Court and judiciary that is intent on undoing the administrative regulatory state - Congress allows regulatory agencies to promulgate their regulations, instead of having Congress spell out every detail.

This is the future we’re heading towards, and I don’t see a way out of it without expanding the courts to undo the damage Trump and McConnell have inflicted.

The continued hammering on the idea that Trump is somehow the champion of the “downtrodden” and that those arrayed against him represent an “elite” who wish to destroy him for his “successes.”

A few years back, there was a massive fire/explosion at a West Texas chemical plant. Lax oversight and inspections played a role in that disaster.

The Texas legislature and governor did nothing to tighten oversight.

This morning, there was yet another major chemical plant explosion and fire. The explosion rattled buildings and broke windows as far as 40 miles from the plant. Multiple casualties were reported.

Trump’s EPA is ignoring oversight and enforcement at a dangerous clip. Trump is gutting the regulatory and oversight of businesses so that millionaires like himself can profit, but everyone else shoulders the burdens.

We are going to see a lot more of this in coming years, thanks to a right wing Supreme Court and judiciary that is intent on undoing the administrative regulatory state - Congress allows regulatory agencies to promulgate their regulations, instead of having Congress spell out every detail.

This is the future we’re heading towards, and I don’t see a way out of it without expanding the courts to undo the damage Trump and McConnell have inflicted.

To add additional injury, Texas allows homeowners to purchase ‘budget’ unregulated insurance that won’t cover the damage caused by the explosion. A lot of homeowners are going to get a big lesson in how regulation can be our friend.

American men - primarily white guys - think they are empowered and gain power so long as Trump stays in office. They think that anyone who isn’t white or a man in the WH will somehow diminish their civil rights or power.

It’s the perception that they lose power if someone else is wielding it from the WH is what this is about, and the GOP is built around this notion of regressive/reactionary know nothingism.

The GOP capitalizes on people thinking that if tax cuts for millionaires happens, these lower and middle class white guys somehow see a benefit. The cruel reality is that they don’t. It never seems to trickle down, and the rich get richer.

Tax cuts are easier sell than tax hikes, even among the fiscal hawk types - because they’ll first demand spending cuts (which again hurts these white guys, even if they don’t realize it).

On Monday, my Trumpster friend was ranting about traditional values — I didn’t want to get into that conversation but somehow he thinks that the thrice married man, who has clearly been unfaithful to all his wives, and who has no knowledge or concern about religion, is a model of rectitude. Of course, it really comes down to the fact that Trump is providing religious fanatics with everything they want in terms of judges and attacks on atheists and the LGBTQ community — that G-d is using a flawed vessel to implement “his” will.

If you have a meat thermometer, get it to 165F. You can cook it the same way you would a chicken leg, just have to adjust for size.

I’ve seen temp ranging from 165 to 180 for doneness. It depends on how you cook the turkey and since this is parts, you can probably cook to 165 and be fine - juices should run clear. If they aren’t, cook additional time.

There was a case of a German real estate developer in Frankfurt who simply declared all 24,000 square meters of a shopping mall to be “commercial space” (usually it is about 1/3 of that once one deducts all the access areas, escalators, fountains, and utility spaces)

Joke was, this mall was located less than 400 yards from Deutsche Bank headquarters, but none of the managers thought to go there to check it out…

Didn’t Rocky have a fairly shitty record in the movies?

Like, he lost to Creed in the first one. Barely beat him in the second. Got his ass kicked by Clubber Lang the first time, was nearly killed in Moscow. And then basically ended up broke with what we would probably today call CTE.

Not exactly the best comp if you want to be a “winner”, right?

Trump Administration to cut its financial contribution to NATO -

I read this. It’s kinda interesting, because it turns out to be an almost useless gesture. These contributions are to the actual NATO budgets for running internal stuff, and are a couple of billion dollars a year total. The 2% spending targets are for the NATO nations’ own militaries, which of course total hundreds of billions of dollars a year.

There’s a formula to allocate national contributions based (I think) on GDP. The US had been paying 22%, and now they’re going to pay 16% and the other countries will make up the difference. So it’s a couple hundred million dollars less for US and more for Canada/Europe.

I assume Trump wanted to cut all sorts of NATO related spending, and his flunkies talked him down to futzing around with 6% of the spending formula on the smallest piece of the total outlay.

Trump is supposed to be in London next week for the NATO not-summit. This ought to be interesting, considering what shape he’s in and what other things he’s got to worry about.

In 2014 two Deutsche Bank senior personnel committed suicide. Executive William Broeksmit committed suicide in London. In October of that year Calogero Gambino, a senior Deutsche Bank regulatory lawyer committed suicide in New York.

In October there was news that the son of Broeksmit provided some of his fathers documents to the FBI.

That meeting, even if Nunes’ guy had a lawyer, probably isn’t protected by attorney-client privilege. Besides the obvious fraud/crime exception to the privilege, meetings/communications between parties (whether via attorney or not) typically aren’t protected. There’s usually an exception for settlement conversations, but that wouldn’t apply here. If parties are meeting to forge an agreement, that’s highly unlikely to be protected - barring a nondisclosure agreement, anyway; and those dissolve in the face of criminal investigations.

The parties because of an apparently attorney-client privilege might be able to protect some communications, but I suspect that the way they’ve bumbled through everything thus far, they’ve probably done a ton of shit to waive or otherwise compromise the privilege as it is.

I must admit, writing from Socialist Europe, the idea that you provide your own bins seems weird. We tell the town hall how many people are living in the house and they provide a bin of the appropriate size, labeled with your address.

Prosecutor General Ruslan Riaboshapka on Nov. 25 fired Kostyantyn Kulyk, a controversial top prosecutor accused of corruption and fabricating political cases.

Kulyk was one of the main perpetrators of the theory that former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden were implicated in political corruption in Ukraine.

Well shit, a big wind blew away all the garbage bins. We had 5 bins out in the street because we missed last week’s pickup (we were in Florida) & the week before (Veteran’s Day set pickup a day later).

They are not even on this block. They rolled all the way over to the next block. Who the hell knows where? And they are not marked with our address so how could we even find our own bins when everyone else’s is also rolling away.

Fuck this, I will head over to Home Depot & buy more bins.

That wind came through here on its way to you. In fact, it is still blowing. But it got so strong in gusts during the night that I lost a lot of roof. They can’t work on it until the wind dies down, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for that, and that they can get it fixed enough so that the rain we are expecting by Friday doesn’t collapse the ceiling over my office, and umpteen filing cabinets full of important archival papers and photos, etc., etc. Moan.

This study sounds interesting:

In one study scenario, a large manufacturing firm was reorganizing and some of the existing employees were going to lose their jobs. To achieve the reorganization goals, participants were told, the company had two options: Replace existing employees either with new employees or by robots that could do the tasks automatically.

When they were observers of this scenario, 67% of participants preferred to see the employees replaced by fellow humans rather than by robots. But when participants were told that their own job was at risk, the stakes got more personal. The majority (60%) said they would prefer getting replaced by a robot rather than a fellow human.

I am in the camp that automation is going to drastically change the way businesses work and we are going to face a reckoning about what work is and what it means. The traditional Protestant Work Ethic that centers the humanity of a job is going to be seriously challenged in the next couple of decades.
