ICE Lured Foreign Students With Legal Visas to a Fake University, and Now They’re Being Arrested

Politics • Views: 23,650

Today we have another truly nauseating story about America in the Trump era: ICE has been operating a fake university, with fake accreditation, and luring foreign students with legal student visas to attend it. And now that the fake school has been exposed and shut down, they’re arresting the students. It’s a jaw-dropper.

About 90 additional foreign students of a fake university in metro Detroit created by the Department of Homeland Security have been arrested in recent months.

A total of about 250 students have now been arrested since January on immigration violations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of a sting operation by federal agents who enticed foreign-born students, mostly from India, to attend the school that marketed itself as offering graduate programs in technology and computer studies, according to ICE officials.

Many of those arrested have been deported to India while others are contesting their removals. One has been allowed to stay after being granted lawful permanent resident status by an immigration judge.

The students had arrived legally in the U.S. on student visas, but since the University of Farmington was later revealed to be a creation of federal agents, they lost their immigration status after it was shut down in January.

[…]

Attorneys for the students arrested said they were unfairly trapped by the U.S. government since the Department of Homeland Security had said on its website that the university was legitimate. An accreditation agency that was working with the U.S. on its sting operation also listed the university as legitimate.

Can’t wait for the NCAA to say that this is improper because of reasons:

The biggest winner in the aftermath of Stephen F. Austin’s shocking upset of No. 1 Duke might be the fundraising effort for the family of the player who hit the game-winning layup.

A thankful Nathan Bain was still in “disbelief” Wednesday — about the contributions more than his clutch basket.

Since the end of the game, the 2-month-old GoFundMe page set up to help Bain’s family rebuild from Hurricane Dorian damage had raised more than $64,000 as of 3 p.m. EST Wednesday. It’s a massive spike from the roughly $2,000 it had raised before Tuesday night’s stunning result became the talk of college basketball.

Can’t have student athletes benefiting in anyway, right?

If they actually cared about countering China, they wouldn’t co-sign on Trump alienating South Korea and other countries that China has reached out to in soft power. They want to ally with Putin since they share homophobia, right wing nationalism, & contempt for liberal democracy.

Current GOP legislators in Washington? They are all owned by Putin, except for Justin Amash who was expelled from the party for standing up for truth. If there are others who reject Putin, they have been very silent the past year. Fear may be driving the disloyalty of some, but they have stood aside and acquiesced in the ascendancy of Putin.

Yeah, This Ruling Says Don McGahn Must Testify. It’s Also a Heroic Defense of the Constitutional Order.
by Charles Pierce

It’s great.

Whatever its ultimate fate is at the hands of some Federalist Society replicant installed permanently in the federal judiciary, the ruling handed down on Monday by Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson in the matter of former White House Counsel Don McGahn should be carved in marble and set up in a town square somewhere as a permanent monument to what this self-governing republic should be, to what it once was, and to what it could be again if we could only get our act together and take the whole thing back.

Over 120 (!) pages, the ruling, which essentially said that McGahn has to respond to congressional subpoenas and that Congress does not need permission from the president* to determine how much of a crook he is, was a call to arms, a defense of the constitutional order, a history lesson, and as firm and precise an ass-kicking as was ever dealt out by a federal judge. It also was a clear statement of the clearly obvious.

Indeed.

OK: even assuming one is “microwaving” a 25-lb turkey in, say a normal-size multi-function oven (like one we have, but have virtually never used that way), AND assuming that one also has some means to turn/rotate the bird; AND assuming its cavity is hollow (not stuffed with microwave-absorbing stuff) - even at the outside recc of 9 minutes per pound (big microwaves are less efficient that small ones), that still means you would have to cook it for nearly 4 hours.

re: #3 Eclectic Cyborg

This shit makes me sick to my stomach as an immigrant and as a rational human being.

How the fucking hell could this have been done legally??

Well, for one thing, this was an “official” “law-enforcement” operation, so even at the best of times (and AFA immigration stuff goes, this is WAY far from “the best of times”) so for the most, “they” can get away with a lot. However, this “University of Farmington” BS seems egregiously off-the-wall even for the Trump Era. I mean, I can kinda understand running a sting operation to nab undocumented “student” immigrants: but this shitshow seems to have basically nailed documented ones: where their visas are/were legit. But ended up arrested and deported anyway??

Nauseating, for sure.

98
aatharuv  Nov 27, 2019 • 3:39:27pm

This is plain entrapment, and it’s not even clear that what the _students_ were doing was even illegal. What the “University” officials were doing, on the other hand…

1) Lots of these students were from one state in India.
2) When students on student visas in some fields graduate from certain STEM degree programs (e.g Computer Science), they are allowed to stay and work in the US for a period of time in what’s called Optional Practical Training (OPT). The purpose of this is to allow people who come to the US for a degree program to spend some time on an internship, or get some practical knowledge using their college degree in a real world situation.
3) The people in question, some of whom had studied at universities that were later deaccredited were trying to find a way to probably ultimately stay in the US because the deaccreditation caused issues with whatever work visa/legal status they were on. It’s much harder for people from India to get a permanent residence in the US legally than most other countries (though they can stay for decades on various temporary visas, liable to deportation upon losing a job) due to per country limits on visas.
4) Some of them saw a University that was offering them course credit for their previous coursework, and allowing them straight to OPT. This _might_ have been what was illegal, but US immigration law is so fiendishly complicated that it’s really hard to tell*
5) Some of them tried leaving and transferring out after they saw the University was a fake, but they were still arrested.
6) This is entrapment and harassment clear and simple. How the hell can someone who applies for a visa, gets it legally, be arrested for going to a University legally allowed to accept students on F-1 (student) visas by the Department of Homeland Security.

*On a side note this is why I don’t trust anyone who says local policemen should try to enforce immigration laws. There’s no way they could humanly even know them.

Open the PDF’s in a program that can change them, select the images then lighten by 25%. Some programs you may need to set an “exposure”, or if that fails then reduce the contrast and see if that helps.

Adobe is being a pig as usual. I’ll have to wait till tomorrow and see if I can tweek it under Linux or ported app instead. Thanks!

re: #97 Jay C

Well, for one thing, this was an “official” “law-enforcement” operation, so even at the best of times (and AFA immigration stuff goes, this is WAY far from “the best of times”) so for the most, “they” can get away with a lot. However, this “University of Farmington” BS seems egregiously off-the-wall even for the Trump Era. I mean, I can kinda understand running a sting operation to nab undocumented “student” immigrants: but this shitshow seems to have basically nailed documented ones: where their visas are/were legit. But ended up arrested and deported anyway??

Nauseating, for sure.

It doesn’t seem to be limited to the Trump era. There was a similar operation in 2013 where Homeland Security created the University of Northern New Jersey out of whole cloth. Arrested 21 brokers and revoked over 1000 student visas.

It was bad enough then, (revoking the student visas of students who thought they were going to a legit college) but they were only arresting the brokers in that case. Now they’re arresting the students enrolling in a seemingly much more legitimate sounding fake University.

If they’re trying to prosecute immigration fraud, and diploma mills, you really actually send agents as fake students/brokers to any fake universities*, not arrest innocent students — the supply of students from foreign countries won’t dry up, but given the barriers to entry to setting up a non-sting University which can allow its students to get student visas, the number of people willing to operate a diploma mill for getting visas will drop.

*And assuming that it’s just visa fraud rather than something closer to traditional organized crime/human trafficking, there might even be a couple of actual students on visas willing to participate in a sting to get a Green card. Or at least there would be in an administration you could actually trust.

re: #59 Jebediah, RBG

I guess I don’t know enough about guns to know if I should be surprised that the 30-06 barrel is under the 12 guages, but I am pretty sure that I am.

It’s probably because of the scope rings, the mounts need something to drill into and the rib & solder sandwich joining the barrels creates a nice space for that which doesn’t compromise the heat treated barrel steel. Also, 12 gauge has a far lower max chamber pressure, so you don’t need as much structural metal thickness there to begin with. As a result, if the rifle barrel was on top the entire vertical stack would need be a lot thicker to create the same margin for safety.

Ok, that all makes sense… altho I wasn’t thinking of vertical, but twin 12’s with the rifle barrel on top and between them. I guess I was stuck on the idea that rifle sights need to be right down there on rifle barrel or as close as practical.
Speaking of practical weapons, I’d best get back to the drawing board with my silenced 12 gauge revolver…

Well that depends on how many he strikes he currently has, if he currently had zero or no strikes before the pitch was throne, that would look rather silly.

If he had two strikes then yeah, drop the bat and run like hell.

It’s to scare international students from coming here at all.
