Nov. 20, 2019 | Colin Marshall — Seconds before we hit record, Snarky Puppy’s bandleader, Michael League leaned in to ask if he could “do a little crowd work.” I suspect he waited until the last second on purpose, but it’s been easy to trust this band when they have an idea, judging by the three Grammy Awards they get to dust off at home after every tour run.

What resulted was a Tiny Desk first: League divided the audience into two sections, one side clapping out a 3/4 beat and the other half a 4/4 beat, creating a polyrhythm that I’m sure a handful of coworkers didn’t feel so confident trying to pull off. But this band pulls you in with simple instruction and a little faith.

Snarky Puppy has been a force for a while now, earning the ears of millions for more than a decade. And their secret sauce? A long-simmered recipe of jazz, funk and gospel. The band started as college friends in the jazz program at the University of North Texas back in 2003. But the formative era came a few years later, after League became a part of the gospel scene in Dallas and eventually brought the jazz students to church, where music plays a different role than it does in the classroom. In the pulpit, it’s a channel for spiritual healing, a communal experience between players and congregation. As an experiment, League pulled his jazz friends and his gospel bandmates into one ensemble, where the two groups bonded together and established ground-zero for building the sonic identity of Snarky Puppy.

Thirteen albums later, you can still hear these gospel and jazz orbits crashing into each other. They’re masters of theme and variation, offering anyone with a listening ear a place to grab hold. And people do. They’re a band whose lyric-less melodies are still yelled (sung back) to them at their concerts around the world, as a shared catharsis for everyone in the room.

OT Today I got home a little later than usual. When I got into my house I checked the usual snail mail, voicemail and e-mail. On my telephone machine was a message to press 1 immediately so that I can talk to an agent and failure to do so will be considered fraud. Thankfully I had no other calls so I hit *57 (call trace for Verizon customers) and I will let the authorities deal with that mess. This must be the latest version of the IRS scam that I got a call from a couple of years ago.

I got a phishing email that looked like it was from Netflix saying my pay information was out of date. You really had to look at the link to figure out it wasn’t actually from netflix.

I checked the landline messages for the first time since we got back from Florida last week. There were about a dozen messages from a scary-sounding robotic voice threatening to “cancel” my Social Security “account”

But I’m sure there are people out there who fall for these sort of things.

They wouldn’t do them if people didn’t fall for them. Their target audience is the elderly, who are likely to be easily confused and too proud to ask for clarification or assistance from their children or grandchildren. And this is why these people have earned my special hatred.

I get the Chinese calls too. The number is usually spoofed to the local consulate and apparently the gist is they’re targeting immigrants with threats of criminal prosecution in the mainland over some bullshit allegation that can be made to go away with a payoff. The whole scam works because so many immigrants have strong family ties back home and the mainland Chinese government is so notoriously authoritarian and corrupt.

I mean, there’s a reason nobody pulls this shit in Japanese.

I got a call like that a few weeks back from “the Social Security Investigative Division” - which, of course, I 86ed. The big problem, though, was finding someone to report it to: the SSA call centers - and even the website - seem set up to auto-report only a limited set of “frauds”: mainLy wrong-number/fake-number/identity-theft stuff: I ended up sending them an email about the fraud call: and rest assured, I’m not holding my breath waiting for a reply…

Our rescue is just turning two. She’s got great energy, and she also has been diagnosed with heart worms. We’re supposed to keep her quiet and not let her run anymore. Consequently, she gets serious zoomies in our townhouse from time to time—she literally bounces off the back of one sofa with out hitting the seat and hits the floor once to bounce off the back of the love seat facing the sofa over and over. She’s about 60#, so she can move furniture. Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!

Sounds like something Zuckerberg and @jack would support:

Land turned this admiration for technocratic strongmen into an entire political ideology. Linking up online with the Silicon Valley entrepreneur Curtis Yarvin — who writes under the pen name Mencius Moldbug — he helped construct the doctrine of “neoreaction,” or NRx, essentially an argument that democracy had outlived its usefulness. In his 2013 series of essays on the topic, titled The Dark Enlightenment, Land argues that the ideal state is a capitalist monarchy described as “gov-corp,” the state-controlled by an authoritarian CEO organizing policy according to the dictates of “rational corporate governance.”

I sat on a jury four years ago and I wish it was as cut and dry as that case. Ours was a rape charge involving two teens at a house party, which ended up devolving into a “he said/she said” case because of a major snafu by the prosecutor. It was stereotypical in practically every way: The country-fried defense attorney whose whole theory of the case was “She wants daddy’s attention,” both parties admitting they were inebriated (yet he was clear-headed enough to remember a condom), the “she wanted it til she didn’t” defense, etc.

The lynchpin of the prosecution’s case was the medical exam performed the morning after, with the expert they brought having certification in several fields…except the one necessary to speak as an expert on the tell-tale vaginal tearing seen in rape cases. The defense immediately jumped on that and the female prosecutor looked like she wanted to drop through the floor. And props to her, she did make an effort to thread the needle by having the expert talk about the tearing and the other results of the rape exam. But without that judgment that the tears were indicative of rape, my fellow jurors looked at the young white guy sitting at the defense table and came to the stereotypical conclusion: “I don’t want to destroy his life over a ‘mistake.’”

I did jury duty 3 times.

1) a burglary case; the doofus prosecutor made a super-prejudicial offer of proof he couldn’t back up, the case was a mistrial

2) a drunk driving case; acquittal. The defendant was absolutely drunk, no question about it. But they didn’t prove he was driving. (a carful of kids parked by the side of the road, they were playing around in the field next to it. The cops decided to charge the only one with a valid drivers license, but one of his friends took the stand at trial and said he’d been driving but didn’t tell the cop at the time because his license was suspended.)

3) a medical malpractice case. The first witness was the treating physician, a HORRIBLE witness; I wanted to yank his license by the time he was done. The case was quickly settled before we had to hear any more.

I’ve never sat on a jury, but one of my teachers in legal ed had deposed the original “Doctor Death” back in the 80s and she used some of the deposition transcript as raw material for a class assignment. It was enough to make your hair stand on end, reading how this guy with essentially no basis for his “expertise” had been a factor in people being executed… Really not good faith-in-humanity reading.

It was a bit like the Cheese Shop sketch from Monty Python.

“So you’re an expert in this?”
“Yes.”
“Have you been to school for these subjects?”
“No.”
“Do you have any experience with these subjects?”
“No.”
“When was the last time you were in school?”
“FDR’s 3rd term.”
“Do you actually know anything about these subjects?”
“Well, no, not really.”

re: #59 Mattand

I’ve noticed over Jezebel that when Obama comes up anymore, a lot of the readership is starting this whole “Yeah, in retrospect he wasn’t that good, and why hasn’t he defeated Trump for us already?” bullshit.

I believe the official wording is “Obama was really a conservative.” Because I see that bullshit here.

Thanks. If I get another call I will use the link. For right now Verizon will take care of these people. ::: evil grin :::

Why do you imagine Verizon will take care of these people? Verizon are probably making money off these people.

After sleeping for 12 hours under a quiet roof, I am so thankful for my “adopted” son and his “adopted” son working until after dark to complete a repair before the rain comes in tomorrow! Now to feed animals, and go to his house for Thanksgiving dinner!

A wonderful Thanksgiving to you all, that brings you what you need!
