So, just got done watching Scorsese’s three and a half hour epic The Irishman.

Great film, at least in my opinion. And an Oscar-worthy performance from Joe Pesci….glad he came out of retirement to star in this. A nicely restrained performance on his part and a great performance from De Niro as well. And Al Pacino was solid as always playing Jimmy Hoffa.

I watched last night on my Fire tablet - I agree, great film, although I did think it tended to meander a little in some spots and could have used a little bit tighter editing.

The first Fire tablet I got a while back was a good Android device but seriously limited because it couldn’t use the Google Play web store. I don’t know if it was deliberate on Amazon’s part, but the newer Fire tablets can get into Google Play just fine, so you can basically use almost any app written for Android.

13
Dr Lizardo  Nov 29, 2019 • 1:19:35pm

re: #10 Charles Johnson

Yeah, there was some meandering here and there - maybe lose about 10 or 15 minutes of extraneous scenes. Aside from that, the rest of the film…acting, directing, cinematography, screenplay, all of that was completely on point.

Watched it on Wednesday and watched it again on Thursday. I think there will be a few Oscars. Pesci should win.

It could have been edited down, but that’s not how Scorsese rolls.

I thought it was great. Will watch many more times.

Scorsese made the right choice to do this film with Netflix. From what I gather, the project was stuck in development hell for quite some time and I have little doubt the major studios were likely all that interested in a three and a half hour mob flick. Right now, the studios are hopelessly addicted to billion dollar grossing blockbusters.

Get Away!”, seconds later, shots are fired. I belive they shot him to prevent him from setting off what they thought was a live bomb vest.

There has been the talking about that Obama statement on the Democratic primary, and a lot of words have been shed.

The Search to Understand Barack Obama Continues
by Nancy LeTourneau November 29, 2019

No one understands Barack Obama better than his wife Michelle. She captured the essence of the man with this: “Barack is not a politician first and foremost. He’s a community activist exploring the viability of politics to make change.” Now that his life as a politician is over, Obama is back to being a community organizer, focusing his energy on raising up a whole new generation of leaders.

That makes sense to me!

Networking question if there are any experts in that area. My Ubuntu machine, which I have had for about 3 years, is having some strange networking issues. The connection to non-local (ie, outside 192.168) is suddenly intermittent. It’s worked fine until recently. If I leave ing on, it will work for a bit, and then stop for a while, until it suddenly restarts. I’m getting about a 60% packet loss. A separate window pinging an local address seems to not be having any problems.

I’m not having issues with any other computer. This is a wired connection, but I swapped cables and even tested with another computer in that connection (it’s ethernet over powerline) and I’m not having any other problems. This just started in the last couple of days. Does anyone know of a way to troubleshoot this? I’m trying to see if I need to get another ethernet card to use rather than the one in the PC. I have tried a number of restarts and a few other suggestions.

This is implying router problems. You may need to swap computers, or powerline adapters, and use the configuration for a few days. If the problem comes from components heating up, then just swapping components will mask the problem.

I don’t know of a hardware component on a client machine that would do this, but I easily imagine routers overheating.

So the last MAGAt standing on my FB page posted a meme saying Mad Cow Nunes left the Dumb-o-crats speechless at the impeachment hearings.

I basically responded that, yeah, they were speechless because he kept repeating conspiracies theories that Fiona Hill said to his face weren’t true. I then may or may not have told her in quasi-diplomatic terms that the GOP have sold their souls to Trump sorely to keep power.

She then responded with a meme quoting noted liberal Democrat Alan Dershowitz (I shit you not) complaining on how Trump was being railroaded.

We now are at the juncture of the program were her and her brother are going full Magic Balance Fairy and describing themselves as freethinkers.

Should I have responded? Probably not.

Do I regeret it? Not really.

These fucking people, though. They are in their own goddamn reality. My partner on her FB feed had someone parrot the War on Thanksgiving horseshit.

Trumpers have become very much like a spin-off Christian cult (think Armstrong, or even the JWs.)

That is why I now recommend that non-Trumpers use the deprogramming techniques that various people have developed over the years, when dealing with Trumpers.

In many ways Donald Trump is the end result of American evangelicalism, once the latter split into progressive and conservative camps. The “progressive” ones have dwindled in numbers, and so have the fundamentalists ones but not to the same extent.

So now the fundamentalists know they are in a minority (and that is why they scream about being allegedly persecuted.) This has fed their fears… and their fears led them to Trump.

Pig In The White House: Conservatives Rage At New Book Mocking Trump

Snowflake alert: Conservatives are raging because a new book, “If You Give a Pig the White House: A Parody,” dares to mock President Trump.

The book, released earlier this week, was written by Faye Kanouse and illustrated by Amy Zhing, and is described as “the adult parody of the beloved children’s cautionary tale, ‘If You Give a Pig a Pancake.’”

Most of the complaining Fox dupes seem to think this is an actual children’s book.

I went skiing at Wolf Creek ski area today, just on the east side of Wolf Creek Pass in southern Colorado. 43 inches of snow in 48 hours. Shit was bottomless.

It snowed *hard* the whole time I was there (there was almost a foot of snow on my car when I was done), and the wind was howling, full-on blizzard conditions. After about three hours of suffering bliss I finally went inside, and took a selfie.

Danielle Stella, a self-described anti-crime Republican seeking to oust Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in the next election, was arrested on shoplifting charges earlier this year. Now, there is another warrant out for the 31-year-old teacher’s arrest after she skipped a court hearing in October.

According to City Pages, Stella was scheduled “to answer to charges that she had attempted to shoplift a few thousand dollars’ worth of stuff from an Edina Target,” but she failed to show up for her hearing last month and is apparently now a fugitive from justice.

After her shoplifting arrest, Stella claimed she had no memory of what took place in the store that day on account of her post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). “[She] says that normally she goes to Target with someone because of anxiety around people,” the complaint noted.

Writers at the blog Danielle Stella Exposed, which has been tracking the Republican candidate’s saga, said they attended the October hearing where Stella failed to show, indicating her attorney and psychiatrist also failed to appear.

Not just Amazon: it’s one of the less-fun aspects of the Age Of Electronic Finance: self-initiated payments can be processed virtually instantaneously, but as soon as a human has to get involved (like authorizing a refund), for some reason, payments back to you always get held up. I’m sure there’s *technical* explanation somewhere unrelated to the interest accruing on those (no doubt) billions of dollars of balances floating around daily….

There is someone trying to pass a law that requires companies to make refunds as quickly and conveniently as it is to make payments.

I honored Black Turkey Soup Friday by roasting the carcass and gravy remants with some more onions to get color, then the stock. Once the bones were boiled off and meat picked, dropped in some mushrooms, green and yellow zuchs, onions. Once they sweated, adjusted with salt, pepper, truffle powder, herbes de provencale.

Do you think eggs and toast would go well with leftover roast turkey soup?

I finally figured out the problem, though I’m not sure why it just started failing. The domain name resolution was going haywire. I finally noticed that I could ping ip addresses all day, but names were messing up.

The file /etc/resolv.conf contains a single entry used for domain, set to 127.0.0.53. I guess whatever used to refer to that has now changed. I changed the list to add Googles servers, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. But that’s not as straightforward as you wold think, as just editing the file would get reset on reboot. The best solution was to follow this, in order to make changes permanent: tecmint.com

Must be nice to be able to not give a shit about your company and take a six month vacation while still getting paid:

Billionaire Jack Dorsey, who has his hands full running Twitter and payments processor Square, spent the month of November in Africa visiting with entrepreneurs. Earlier this week, he announced plans to spend three to six months next year residing on the continent.

It isn’t immediately clear from the Tweet he wrote where Dorsey plans to live or what he plans to do. He did say he was sad to be going home and that “Africa will define the future (especially the bitcoin one!).” He traveled to Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, and South Africa during his visit.

Remember that Florida congressman last year that announced he supported an impeachment inquiry and then announced he was retiring the next day, which at least was better than the other way around? Here’s the story on what the GOP did to him: politico.com.

Especially in light of the ridiculous overinflation of cash currency, Africa is ahead of much of the West in cashless transactions.

YouTube is rolling out changes that may affect the income of content creators. Basically, YT is trying to come into compliance with COPPA, the Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act. The concern among some content creators is that YT might reclassify a video intended for adults as being for children, thus depriving the creator of personalized ad revenue.

searchenginejournal.com

This next article complains that some creators are misleading others about the impact of YT’s actions.

slate.com

I realized this was a thing when one of my favorite YT channels put up a video about how she definitely classifies everything as adult, as it’s satire, but YT reclassified one of her videos as for kids. And yes, MEPearlA is satire, but the channel owner is a wildlife rehabilitator in the Los Angeles area and she does feature possums in her videos.

Proper Possum Problem www.mepearl.com https://patreon.com/mepearl https://zazzle.com/mepearl

So she’s asking her viewers to come up with future titles for videos that would clearly indicate that her videos are not for kids. On most YT channels, the comments are not fit to read, but here, they are delightful.

Do you think eggs and toast would go well with leftover roast turkey soup?

On separate plates, yes.

I finally learned how to make miso soup, and it is dead awesome and is going to become a breakfast staple (miso is just a sort of soybean paste) with bits of tofu, rice, green onion or cooked daikon radish.

Same plates would be a mother and child reunion if they were turkey eggs.

My youngest was talking about that, and a number of people are worried about a lot of animation being classified as for children even though a good portion of it isn’t.

re: #200 Belafon

This is the Banana Republican intellectual lynchpin that I hope they get called to task on.

Noting how Trump can be impetuous and indelicate, Hurd stresses nonetheless that every elected official’s threshold for impeachment will vary. “For me, impeachment is a clear violation of the law,” he says. “And I haven’t seen anything—yet—that looks like a clear violation of the law.”
This could prove to be Trump’s salvation. Even among those Republicans not predisposed to defending him, there is the silhouette of an emerging consensus: That the president’s dealings with Ukraine were foolish, unbecoming and unfortunate—but not impeachable.

First off, it’s not ‘for you’ Mr Senator. It’s per the Constitution, not per your feelings. Ya know, for the People, by the People. Most importantly, the Constitution specified ‘high crimes and misdemeanors.’ It was purposely left open for interpretation for anything on the books or not. That specific language was ratifified in 1788: many laws didn’t exist yet. But here’s the rub:

Most people, including a majority of the House of Representatives, interpreted the phrase to refer not to literal crimes or misdemeanors but to any serious abuses of presidential power. This interpretation remains the dominant one 150 years later. In the words of Professor Laurence Tribe and Joshua Matz, the majority view is that a president can legally be impeached for “intentional, evil deeds” that “drastically subvert the Constitution and involve an unforgivable abuse of the presidency” — even if those deeds didn’t violate any criminal laws.

Hurd is full of shit. Trump can be impeached even with no laws broken. Now this is the kicker: Schiff as an attourney and knows this. Many of us grew impatient while Trump did things which quite clearly broke a law with no action. Once Ukraine in the Membrane is wrapped up nicely and sent off to Senate for John Roberts to manage the shitshow, what if the House draws up articles on all the other shit? Like a tsunami of Articles? The Banana Republicans have assumed victory on those, declaring victory enjoying seeing them in the rear view mirror. They’re still there and can be acted upon.

I could go on. But this is been in the back of my dome for a bit.

If it was just the press, it’d be one thing. But goddamned if I haven’t heard enough of the ‘SHE’S A COP, CRUCIFY HER!’ and demanding she be straight up primaried and kicked out now. The depth of animosity for her specifically is fucking amazing.

And I’m terrified just how much ratfucking we’re going to see next year to ensure Trump skates.

So by those standards, Energy Secretary Rick Perry’s tenure as a member of President Trump’s Cabinet could count as a relative success.”

It’s not “a success”

It’s merely getting away with it, i.e. not getting caught (yet)

I know people are talking about “The Irishman” on Netflix, but I would like to recommend the documentary: “Bikram: Yogi, Guru, Predator.” It’s unsettling, there are descriptions of sexual assault and there is no happy ending. But still good to watch.

Also, there was a discussion over the last few days online about making your kids hug their relatives. The Girl Scouts put out a meme saying, “Reminder: She doesn’t owe anyone a hug. Not even at the holidays.” Well, this particular asshat, who is familiar to me, posted this on Twitter in response:

I dated a guy for awhile who grew up in that same neighborhood as Bob (KR’s first name). Yeah, not a lot of worry about the next meal or crime (outside of white collar and domestic issues), or going without anything. I’m still friends with the guy, he ended up married to a special ed teacher and is a long distance truck driver. He hated growing up there. Hasn’t been back since he left.

Double upding for the CW McCall link.

re: #198 Belafon

Debian is going away from a static resolv.conf for DNS resolution, towards having to happen dynamically. I put the nameserver information in /etc/interfaces/ with the rest of the info (my machines are servers so static IPs).
