Nov. 22, 2019 | Tom Huizenga — When Russian-born pianist Igor Levit dropped in to play Beethoven at the Tiny Desk, he admitted he was – even after four cups of coffee – “still in my time zone change.” A little jet-lagged, he had flown in from Berlin the night before and hopped an early train from New York to Washington, D.C.

But Levit easily slipped into his Beethoven zone – a space he knows all too well. Levit, 32, has been playing the German composer’s music for half his life. He recently released a box set of all 32 Beethoven piano sonatas and once again he’ll be performing complete cycles of the sonatas in various cities to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth in 2020.

Levit’s set placed the oddball, wryly-humored Andante from the neglected Tenth Sonata between two of the most famous pieces of western music: the opening movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata and the tender, ubiquitous, bagatelle better known as “Für Elise.”

Levit’s “Moonlight” emphasized the mesmerizing qualities in the music, with its oscillating pulse, smoldering low end and tolling bells. The second piece proved Beethoven wasn’t always the grumpy guy he’s made out to be. His sly sense of humor percolates through the set of variations in a jaunty march rhythm, punctuated with a final, ironic, thundering chord. Levit closed with the ever popular “Für Elise.” Sure, it’s a “total eye-roller,” Levit admits, but he also describes it as “one of the most beautiful treasures in the piano literature.”

Here we see three distinct sides of Beethoven – foreboding, funny and fetching – from one of his most ardent and thoughtful advocates. Now what could be better than that as an overture to the big Beethoven year ahead?

SET LIST
Beethoven: “Piano Sonata No. 14 ‘Moonlight,’ I. Adagio sostenuto”
Beethoven: “Piano Sonata No. 10, II. Andante”
Beethoven: “Bagatelle in A minor, ‘Fur Elise’”

These Tiny Desk concerts always sound amazing. I’ve wondered if the most likely non-acoustically treated and engineered room of the library was still beneficial: all the books in shelves, sorta random and chaotic diffusers and traps made up of tomes about 4th wave Feminism and Dostoyevski, etc. Cool stuff to let my left brain savor as the musicians do their majicks to my right brain.

I’m in my office now picking up things to work on over the next few days. We’re supposed to get about 15” of snow from Sunday night through Tuesday morning. There’s a good chance we’ll be told to stay home. Last night’s forecast was for about 6-8”; this morning was put at around 10”; I just checked again to see the new totals—a discouraging trend.

It’s amazing how much nuance you get from a note. Can do with drums, but wind instruments, you can get more, and strings… wow.

A master with a piano: one note can be played a practically infinite number of ways with power and decay/sustain. Bethoven was deep in nuance.

An assistant US attorney found herself on the other side of the law early Saturday in Hell’s Kitchen when she was busted for allegedly interfering with cops grilling her boyfriend during a drunk driving stop, police and sources told The Post.

Bianca Forde was in the passenger seat of a Chevy Camaro when cops pulled the car over at the intersection of 11th Ave and W. 40th St in Hell’s Kitchen at about 12:15 a.m. and attempted to administer an intoxication “field test” to her boyfriend, who was behind the wheel, police said.

The attorney was arrested and charged with obstructing governmental administration, resisting arrest, failure to obey police officers, and illegal signaling, authorities said.

It was not immediately known whether her 40-year-old boyfriend was arrested.

A New Yorker who gained US citizenship as a child is suddenly facing deportation, along with several green card-holding members of his family, after apparent targeting by the Trump administration in what the family believes is a clear case of anti-Muslim bias.
None of the individuals have a criminal record, and say the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) only raised questions about the validity of their immigration status after another relative was arrested following a terrorist incident in the city. The government’s actions have alarmed advocates and led to them accusing officials of meting out unfair “collective punishment”.
Ahsan Ullah, 32, an electrician from Brooklyn, was placed in immigration detention in Kearny, New Jersey, on 22 October. He spent about four weeks separated from his American wife and three children before being released on bond last Tuesday pending the outcome of his case.
Four of his relatives, who all hold green cards, are also fighting government efforts to strip them of their US residency status. Since Trump came into office, the number of such denaturalization and citizenship revocation cases filed by DHS has surged.
…………………………
The family and their advocates said the treatment amounts to collective punishment. “This is retribution for sharing the same DNA” as someone accused of terrorism, Ahsan said in a phone call from the Hudson county correctional facility in New Jersey, just before his release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) detention.
“I’ve been here [in the US] since I was a kid - my school is here, my college is here, my family is here, my business is here, my friends are here, my career is here,” he said . “This is where my everything is.”
DHS declined to comment on the family’s case.

The good clouds are fleeing?

The sea is shimmering. It always does. Water shimmers.
I live by shimmering waters.
I always spoke of the portrait life gives you every day and night to my family and friends.
Some got it.
The moment at the end of winter where lime and red and green show in certain light in the trees.
The day, before spring where if you are fortunate to be close to or notice, the buds are for lack of a better word, pregnant and only that snapshot will do it justice. On a hillside, and then realizing 500 feet does make a world of difference.
I spent decades on the road and would try my best to drink up all that was shown to me.
Orion rising in the east in winter as the winds fed off the lakes. That smell before rain.
The feeling before snow.
The smell of rain.
The lift of the leaves on trees before a really hard storm.
I sometimes forget to look.
I looked tonight.
Blink.
Gone.
Look.

I always thought that the plate should be left on a table in the back with a sign saying:

“Give What You Can; Take What You Need”

Most parishes I’ve seen would still have plenty left over.

An alms box is always a good alternative to the plate as well if we truly believe what we say at the offertory: “All things come from thee, Oh Lord and of thine own have I given thee.”

81
William Lewis  Nov 30, 2019 • 5:28:39pm

re: #79 William Lewis

The other thing is how it really doesn’t have to be that way. Since I move to Hayward in 2012, my parish has provided me with, literally, thousands of dollars in help and support in everything from helping me meet rent, energy, food, fuel and other bills and giving me clothing and other necessities. The year I though things were going to be financially stable enough that I pledged to give to the parish and yet it couldn’t happen - not one word of blame or guilt. Instead - how are you doing? what can we do to help?

And I know darn well though that is just my little Episcopalian church. There are several far wealthier churches in this town of two thousand that wouldn’t be that way. They’d be like what you describe. Or like the mega-church a friend visited and they complained about the noise of the child she’d recently adopted from Vietnam; she laughed in their faces and never went back. That courage I admired.

Grump. Ah, well, helps to get it off my chest. Thanks to anyone who bothered to read this far.

Apparently it’s a fancy looking pile of junk:

Under the skin, it’s a Ford F550 commercial cab chassis, complete with a lightly warmed up version of the standard 6.8-liter V10 engine that boosts it up to 398 horsepower. Which would be a moderately decent amount of poke if it didn’t have to drag either 4,500 or 6,000 kilograms around (that’s 9920 or 13,230 pounds) depending on whether it’s been bulletproofed or not.

Top speed is thus a paltry 87 mph (140 km/h), so you’d better stay out of the fast lane in certain jurisdictions. But who cares? You and your grubby sacks of money won’t be in the driver’s seat anyway. You’ll be in the back, tooling about with the Playstation or the satellite TV, popping overpriced champagne out of the built-in fridge and watching the electric armrests go up and down as you fiddle with the many touch-screen options at your disposal.

I think we are way, way closer to this then people realize. There has to be more than one enlisted guy who looked at all the “Luvs me my warrior war criminal” moves over the last few weeks and thought “I can do whatever the fuck I want. Trump has my back. And in order for me to keep it that way, I’ll do whatever Trump wants.”

A more accurate headline: “Scott Adams Wants Wingnuts To Have Safe Spaces.”

When you see these articles, you really can see into the wingnut reality that those votes for Trump did not lead to the “post-PC” future they expected. That they remain a shrinking minority of this country and voting for a man whose popularity is rivaled by genital warts did nothing to stop or reverse that trend. And the 8 years of moaning about how Obama was “NOT MY PRESIDENT!!!” is biting them in the ass because all those social and political norms they took pride in shitting all over are no longer there to protect them.

So we get these “ideas” like Adams proposes that are sold as bringing “calm,” but really are about further cushioning the blow that wingnuts are facing in the wake of Trump’s growing unpopularity. Such as 48 hour “grace periods” for stupid/hateful/etc shit said on social media, during which any apology (even obviously insincere ones) automatically grants a “pass” that everybody must abide by. And a similar “pass” on similar statements said up to 20 years ago, on the grounds that the speaker was a “different person” when such was said. But given that these are rules that a wingnut wants to put forward, there’s the unwritten exception that neither rule applies to the people they want to attack.

One thing you don’t see anywhere in the article? Adams offering any sort of apology for the shit he now wants a pass on.

I don’t think the Mexican government runs that country anymore.

An hour-long cartel versus cops gun battle left 14 dead and a Mexican town looking like a bullet-pocked war zone on Sunday.

Four of those who died were cops after a truck convoy carrying suspected cartel members rolled into a town in Coahuila state, officials said.

Photos from Villa Union, a town of 3,000 residents about an hour drive southwest of Eagle Pass, Texas, show the front, side, and back of the town’s municipal building strafed by gunfire.

Another photo shows a bullet-damaged, partially-wrecked pickup truck with Texas plates. On the truck’s driver’s side door can be seen the letters C. D. N. — which stands in Spanish for Cartel of the Northeast.

It was unclear what may have prompted the armed group to storm the town.

Security forces will remain in the town for several days to restore a sense of calm, the governor said.

“These groups won’t be allowed to enter state territory,” the government of Coahuila said in a statement.

You don’t need kompromat to get Republicans to abide by foreign interference, because the economic and demographic realities of the near future are enough. An Indiana teen was killed by her backseat passenger while driving, police say

look at all the weasel words they use to say “he shot her”

Annalysa McMillan, 19, was driving her car Tuesday in Marion, Indiana, about 70 miles north of Indianapolis when a gun discharged in the passenger seat behind her, striking her, the Marion Police Department said in a statement.

The cause of death was determined to be one gunshot to McMillan’s back and the manner of death has been ruled a homicide. The shooting caused a minor accident with another driver, police said.

Austin Smith, 22, was sitting behind McMillan with the rifle when it discharged, police said. Smith is being held on bond on charges of reckless homicide and criminal recklessness while armed with a deadly weapon, according to the Grant Count Jail website.

Tracking some fake news now, which I might post about. Story going around the right that a Newsweek reporter was fired for posting fake news that Trump was golfing instead of supporting the troops in Afghanistan. It’s total bullshit.

Saw that last night. I didn’t follow through and I forget what website was reporting it (Daily Beast, maybe?) but I do remember seeing something about the Washington Examiner being involved.

I have to admit my first reaction was to believe it. The whole “Never give the MAGAts the high moral ground due to their martyr complex” thing ran through my head.

If I didn’t have other stuff to deal with it, I’d look into it, too.

In other news - it was 17 years ago today that K and I moved into this house. I never had a place that I could really call ‘home’ in my life (my family moved a lot, lots of rentals), but this house is it.

And it doesn’t seem like we’ve been here anywhere near 17 years.

re: #186 Mattand

The story about Newsweek firing a reporter was the Examiner, specifcally Mike Brest. I asked him via Twitter how to verify his story because it relies on us trusting him that he actuall made a phone call to Newsweek and that somebody at Newsweek told him that the reporter was fired.

That’s it. That’s the evidence. I call bullshit.

BigPapa  Dec 1, 2019 • 8:28:42am

I also pinged the reporter on Twitter asking her if she was terminated.

Our local paper ran an op-ed that came from Cagle Syndicates (or something like that) by a writer I’ve never heard of. The thesis is that liberals are all for supporting female politicians when they’re liberal, but are hypocrites because of the way they treated Stefanik when Adam Schiff refused to allow Nunes to give her his time. This is exactly why they did this ploy—now there are stories being planted about how unfairly Dems treat female conservatives.

Our paper is fairly liberal, but they really dropped the ball by running a column built on demonstrable lies. I’m going to have to write a letter, I’m afraid.

The thing about the right wing media ecosystem is that people still give them the benefit of the doubt sometimes. I just found a few Twitter randos who accepted it as true.

Even Ross Douthat recognizes that Bernie doesn’t care about anything except economics:

But for the kind of American who is mostly with the Democrats on economics but wary of progressivism’s zest for culture war, Sanders’s socialism might be strangely reassuring — as a signal of what he actually cares about, and what battles he might eschew for the sake of his anti-plutocratic goals. (At the very least he’s no more radical on an issue like abortion than a studied moderate like Mayor Pete.)

This is why, despite technically preferring a moderate like Biden or Amy Klobuchar, I keep coming back to the conservative’s case for Bernie — which rests on the perhaps-wrong but still attractive supposition that he’s the liberal most likely to spend all his time trying to tax the rich and leave cultural conservatives alone.

There was a woman at Kroger, probably in her 70s, writing a check in front of me. I think she only wanted to do it to keep track. It makes me think that companies should just sell the recording part of a checkbook with a slot for a debit card.

It’s worth noting again what Brooks is tweeting in response to, too: NYT’s hitpiece on Kamala Harris.

It’s all seeding the idea that America will never and can never accept a non-white male president ever again, because that somehow would be even more racist and sexist than Trump and his supporters.

The entirety of the political press seems filled with both “Cletus Whisperers” (as so helpfully termed) and self-hating big city moderates who have internalized every single bad thing rural conservatives have ever said about them and their profession. Thus, the only opinion ever granted credence ever is rural conservatism. They are forever “Real AMerica” and no letter to the editor will ever shake that belief.

Cheeto story contains some of our hidden socialist history:

In the summer of 1945, Little Boy and Fat Man were detonated in Japan, ending the war and leaving the Quartermaster Corps with warehouses full of food as well as an elaborate manufacturing and distribution system still churning out goods for millions of troops. This would take years to redirect or dismantle. Fearful of the effect of the sudden withdrawal of its huge wartime contracts, the government propped up the dairy business first by buying their excess product and then, in some cases, by selling it back to them at lower prices. (The Commodity Credit Corporation, created during the Great Depression and still in existence, would later distribute these surpluses to welfare recipients and the elderly—the storied “government cheese.”) A temporary federal agency, the Surplus Property Administration, sold off at bargain‑basement prices the food the Quartermaster Corps had amassed.

Nothing Lasts Forever — Not Even on the Internet
A Better Social Media World is Waiting for Us
(NYT) by Annalee Newitz (11/30/19)

I was directed to this by John Scalzi’s blog, because he was one of the people interviewed on the subject. And the way the article opens is a cool graphic design. Of course, after it has been used once, that has to be it!

What’s more, companies like Facebook and Twitter lack an incentive to promote better relationships and a better understanding of the news “because they make money through outrage and deception,” Ms. Hall said. Outrage and deception capture our attention, and attention sells ads. “At a business model level, they are ad networks parasitic on human connection.”

More:

[John Scalzi] imagines a new wave of digital media companies that will serve the generations of people who have grown up online (soon, that will be most people) and already know that digital information can’t be trusted. They will care about who is giving them the news, where it comes from, and why it’s believable. “They will not be internet optimists in the way that the current generation of tech billionaires wants,” he said with a laugh. They will not, he explained, believe the hype about how every new app makes the world a better place: “They’ll be internet pessimists and realists.”

Seb Gorka is horrible. His radio show is just as bad as the worst ones. He’s clearly pining for a job after the fascist takover is complete.

I’m tracking this Fake News: Thanksgiving Edition story about a Newseek reporter being fired for ‘falsely reporting that he was golfing instead of heroically visiting the troops.’ The only source for her being fired is an Examiner story by Mike Brest, where he wrote that she discussed the story with him, and he followed up and talked to Newsweek which told him of her termination. I’m going to wait and see if she was actually fired but this is a typical scandal either way.
