blind date

the conversation is fairly conventional until your date decides to inform you she is the “first transhuman”. now, “transhumanism” is a line of bs ted talk speculation about how future tech will cure all diseases and allow us to live forever through gene modification etc, and upload knowledge and abilities directly into your brain.

my date believes this is a news report. she expounds on her immunity to disease.

things take an uncomfortable turn when i attempt to order a bourbon on the rocks. she exclaims “do you want to poison yourself?” and orders the waiter to bring me red wine instead

red wine and mineral water are the only healthy beverages. all else is poison. red wine will cure us of all diseases and protect us from kgb brainwashing. russia and germany are at war, she is germany. the un is protecting her. “if you knew who i was you’d kill yourself”. waiter! another round of red wine, now! i am now also transhuman, otherwise why would i be sitting there with her!? we will be married for twenty years and have a son. then she’ll marry somebody else. her ex husband’s family are commoners, her family is royal, her mother is queen of lithuania. the kgb loves me and wants me to live, i must drink another glass of red wine. waiter! bring him another glass! russia and germany are at war, she is germany. the un is protecting her. “if you knew who i was you’d kill yourself. i don’t care if you already paid the check - waiter, two more glasses of red wine! russia germany at war… everything is brainwashing… we will get married - don’t you want to live?? transhuman… i am french, lithuanian, israeli, russian… i will be able to speak all languages… if you knew who i was you’d kill yourself… the kgb loves you, drink your wine… russia and germany… transhuman…”

What we have here is the same thing we see whenever a Republican or wingnut (but I repeat myself) wants to discredit an expert in the minds of his loyal followers: Treat their statement as an “opinion” and then assert that that “opinion” is no more “right” than his own.

As even Todd noted, you’ve got experts from 17 different intel agencies and experts from intel agencies across the West saying Russia staged a coordinated and sophisticated effort to influence our elections…versus a handful of journalists who are relying upon the same small cast of Ukrainian sources whose own bias is pretty obvious saying Ukraine was at fault. And Kennedy declares the former to simply have “opinions” so he can say that both “opinions” have validity in order to fully embrace the latter.

“Symbolism”.

Actual tangible rights, the active dismissal of said rights, and the blind eye toward said dismissals are ‘symbolism’, even as they prevent vast parts of the population from actually benefiting from the advancement of ‘material concerns’.

Just….fuck all of this. Fuck absolutely all of this. And god help me just how many Bernie Bros are out of the woodworks to cheer this on.

We’re getting absolutely ratfucked next year and it’s not even a question it seems.

I remember meeting several folks like that back when I was in college. The ones I remember, needed that kind of fantasy just to survive because they just couldn’t handle reality. I generally felt a deep sadness for them. Most of them would disappear after a couple of years. Moving on, illness, hospitalization, death, I never found out.

Sorry to hear you had to deal with, and pay for, this. I guess that you could consider your paying for dinner an act of kindness and charity. And it sounds like the person was happy to include you in their fantasy world, for as long as you wanted to visit.

What it really means is that “identity politics” has received such a negative response that the morons still using it are almost immediately discredited as self-obsessed assholes. They use “symbolism” now, but the message is still the same: “Your rights as a minority are less important than my bank account.”

Finally finished my binge watch of “The Man in the High Castle”; one of its messages was how easily Americans who were not racial or religious minorities accepted the rule of the Reich and were complicit in or didn’t really care about the crimes committed in the Nazi regime ruling America. In the DC area, there is a fairly active singles scene particularly for the over 40’s . From what I have seen, the protocol for the first date is to meet face to face at an agreed upon coffee house or light lunch place in a public and neutral setting. And only after that decide whether to proceed to a ‘real’ dinner.

There are also a number of singles groups that host large dances and other events. The advantage here is that one can get acclimated and meet a good number of singles in a less formal or demanding setting. And maybe even have a good time doing some other interesting activity at the same time.

WIU was really hammered hard (as were many other Illinois colleges) by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s destructive economic policies: Illinois had no budget for three years, because he refused to sign one. State aid to colleges has shut down entirely, and those colleges without a large endowment were nearly destroyed. To blame it on a black president is really stupid.

There’s an old term for what Bernie sells: “trickle down civil rights.” It’s the exact same argument used by “trickle down economics” supporters, only used to claim that social equality rather than economic equality is reached when people have more money. Yet in practice all you do is replace racism/sexism/bigotry/etc with classism, such that members of the same minority group will divide themselves based upon their “worth.”

U of I main campus here. My parents moved to Champaign-Urbana from a small southern Illinois town when my brother and I were in grade school so they could afford to send us to college there. My mother went to SIU at 16, and loved it, but it was during the depths of the depression, and the fees left my grandparents with nothing to eat, and she could not stand it. Quit, got a job, and helped my grandfather support the three of them. So it was hugely important to her that my brother and I went.

Of course, the U of I was extremely diversified, and it was very good for me, even coming from Champaign High, that was integrated.

What Bernie’s selling, or at least how Bros are selling it to try to win over “moderate” voters, is libertarianism by a different name. The general concept is the same: If people have more money, then they’ll solve their own “problems” and America overall will benefit. The only functional difference is Bernie wants to achieve that through government intervention, while libertarians (in principle if not practice) say government should be little more than a referee to make sure everybody’s on “equal” footing.

Not to mention, this was on top of Blagojevich spending several years screwing around with university funding levels as well. (Which a lot of people saw as a personal dig against the parts of the state that weren’t Chicago.) So they were already on their back foot as it was financially.

I was working in a Poli-Sci Department, and my wife was in an data analytics unit, when Blagojevech was found guilty. People were ecstatic.

(Just to avoid any misconceptions, I wasn’t on the faculty.)

blind date

the conversation is fairly conventional until your date decides to inform you she is the “first transhuman”. now, “transhumanism” is a line of bs ted talk speculation about how future tech will cure all diseases and allow us to live forever through gene modification etc, and upload knowledge and abilities directly into your brain.

my date believes this is a news report. she expounds on her immunity to disease.

things take an uncomfortable turn when i attempt to order a bourbon on the rocks. she exclaims “do you want to poison yourself?” and orders the waiter to bring me red wine instead

red wine and mineral water are the only healthy beverages. all else is poison. red wine will cure us of all diseases and protect us from kgb brainwashing. russia and germany are at war, she is germany. the un is protecting her. “if you knew who i was you’d kill yourself. i don’t care if you already paid the check - waiter, two more glasses of red wine! russia germany at war… everything is brainwashing… we will get married - don’t you want to live?? transhuman… i am french, lithuanian, israeli, russian… i will be able to speak all languages… if you knew who i was you’d kill yourself… the kgb loves you, drink your wine… russia and germany… transhuman…”

this is when you look studiously at the sky. “There. The Bat signal. My apologies. I have to leave. Gotham needs me.”

Well, it is “The Poke” which is a spoof site.

That said, my community has a “meals” program to provide home-cooked food to families of new mothers recovering from childbirth, and also to people recovering from surgery, and the elderly. It is a service provided by volunteers if the primary food preparer in the family is incapacitated. A neighbor signed me up when I had my ankle surgery.

I cancelled the service after 2 days because the food was TERRIBLE. We sent a donation and for the rest of the time that I had to stay off my feet, Z made burgers, hotdogs, scrambled eggs and we got takeout pizza.

Yeah well. Back in the olden days people were happy to lend a hand and pitch in, and then you paid it forward. But whatever somebody cooked for you, you would EAT IT & LIKE IT or if it wasn’t edible feed it to the pet or whatever and thank them profusely.

I think printing out a long list of their likes and dislikes was over the top. Helpful neighbors are not staff. If you want that kind of service, FUCKING PAY FOR IT.

Owning a home in Los Angeles. What a CENSORED joke.

When I moved into the neighborhood the cheapest house for sale was a one story bungalow with a main room, kitchenette and bathroom. Price—$350K. Two weeks ago it came back on the market price $1.275M! Assholes keep flipping properties here ballooning the prices.

Talked to a realtor about buying a condo and when she saw how much I make from my government job she said I’d have to match 6 lotto numbers to buy a home…

Flippers are the enemy of humanity.

It started with that ass Robert Allen back in the late 70s with his “Nothing Down” book luring marks into flipping red estate. Dad was approached by folks trying to rope him into this and he told them to fuck off because the game is rigged.

I went out and picketed this afternoon. It was quiet. I had a couple of conversations. I told one pre-teen girl that she needed to use her math skills to figure out how long it would take to execute 639,000 women (the number of women who got abortions in 2015). Yeah, I’m mean, but I hope that she thinks about it.

The sign was for Marcus P*****n, who apparently was not here today. He does have out of town family. Oh well, there’s always next week. :)
