A man was shot to death by the handmade device he made to protect his home

A Maine man was killed by a device he made for the front door of his home, police say.

Ronald Cyr, 65, called 911 on the evening of Thanksgiving Day and reported he had been shot, the Van Buren Police Department said.
When officers arrived, they discovered a device on the front door of the man’s home that was designed to fire a handgun if anyone attempted to enter, the department said.
Police found other unknown devices around the house and contacted the state’s bomb squad.
After an hours-long investigation, authorities determined Cyr — who later succumbed to his injuries —- was hit after an “unintentional discharge of one of his homemade devices,” the department said.

There’s two deadlines since there’s two hearings scheduled so far. No word on if they’ll refuse for the second as well, but odds are pretty good they will.

General Election ITV debate: Five talking points from Sunday’s face-off between seven politicians

Top of the questions was:

Parties clashed over the US president - who arrives in the UK on Monday ahead of a meeting of Nato leaders.

Boris Johnson has already confirmed he will meet with Trump in London however, a number of the candidates such as Swinson said they would not offer the controversial figurehead the same hospitality.

I really don’t know which end is up on that story but the one thing bothers me the most is the complete lack of introspection surrounding it. We’re so accustomed to the post 911 authoritarian zeitgeist of military & police worship that we don’t even examine why this kind of bullshit can consistently capture national attention.

I think they’re worried about just creating invulnerable Captain America. But, having just recently watched Shazam!, I think they should let those writers do it. Create the Luthor that exists in the comic books and cartoons, the one where Superman’s brawn alone will not defeat him.

Also, I’ve watched and read One Punch Man (Japanese character meant to spoof some manga/anime), and so have a lot of other people. A lot of people will watch invulnerable characters.

I think they’re worried about just creating invulnerable Captain America. But, having just recently watched Shazam!, I think they should let those writers do it. Create the Luthor that exists in the comic books and cartoons, the one where Superman’s brawn alone will not defeat him.

Also, I’ve watched and read One Punch Man (Japanese character meant to spoof some manga/anime), and so have a lot of other people. A lot of people will watch invulnerable characters.

If it’s Supes that they’re worried about reworking, and not Clark Kent himself, that should be easy: Just don’t paste, “America, Fuck Yeah,” all over him. I get it: Superman, “Truth, Justice, and the American Way.” But if you tone down the blind patriotism - or maybe make it a teachable moment in Supes’s character arc - then you have a character that is relatable to a modern audience. Someone who appreciates America but wants to work to fix its flaws.

I do remember, back in 98, the Java One show I went to having a hot nerd contest both male and female (that wasn’t what they called it, but that’s what it was). But see, that gives you an opening for some levity in the storytelling. Superheroes don’t have to be dark, Marvel did an excellent job showing us that. Make the struggle of an invulnerable super-powered hero humorous, but in the context of the life we understand today.

You’ve just described the plot to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But there are definitely things to explore on that front with Superman, especially with how willing America would embrace someone like Luthor.

True, but the movie didn’t explore too deep into the politics of the Accords (probably for the better for what the movie set out to accomplish) and had Tony as a strong foil who wasn’t nearly as adversarial as he could have been given the source material.

For Superman, I could see it being much more focused specifically on an American political situation, and much more apparent about a gov’t trying to lift Superman up as a propaganda figure he’d absolute abhor.

It’d probably be more along the lines of Winter Soldier with the spy thriller aspects traded in for political thriller aspects with as much time given to him as Clark Kent as Superman, using both his and Lois’ reputations and connections to expose the propaganda campaign. I could even see Bizarro being used as a Superman decoy for whoever is in charge of the campaign that, rather than being the deformed opposite of Supes, is an ideological opposite (think the famous Captain America “What If” where he was thawed in the 80s rather than the 60s).

It’s literally turning into a Starbucks deal where there’s a Wawa roughly a mile or two from the next one.

We’re there a lot. Funny thing is I’ve never had their coffee because my partner and I among the 283 people in the US who don’t drink the stuff. Shit, nine times out of ten, I don’t even get their other star product, the hoagie, because I had a problem years ago with ordering two at a time.

There’s a significant number of items on Amazon/Ebay and probably other services that are not ‘human created’, as in, no person sat down and thought “I will make a product of Christmas ornaments decorated with concentration camp images”.

Instead, there are companies that just generate a huge number of items from common phrases and images stolen off the internet printed on them.

Those items aren’t kept in stock, they’re only printed if someone actually orders them.

And in this case, Amazon doesn’t want to spend the time/money checking what people are listing on its site, and the company advertising the product didn’t put in a “no holocaust” feature in the code they use to autogenerate the product ideas.

i’m gonna repeat this as much as necessary:

- When the House votes and adopts articles of impeachment, the President is impeached. Period. Full stop.
- At this point the President becomes a permanent member of a small and ignominious group. Forever.

- The Senate only votes to remove from office or not, and/or disqualify from holding another future office.
- There is nothing more and nothing less.
- There is no guilty or not guilty, nor is there any sense of innocence or exoneration.

The House has spoken. The President is impeached.

There is no ‘acquittal’.

It will be done simply for petty revenge. One strange rule they had (this was in the 80’s when I was living in Houston), you had to lay the bottle down on the bar. It couldn’t be standing up on the bar. Rockwall was dry until about ten years ago. We went to Chili’s and asked for something, and they had to take my driver’s license, enter me into their club, and then get me the drink.

Enough new people finally moved in that we changed the law on it. If you look at a map, you will see a town just to the east of Rockwall called Mobile City. It contains a trailer park and an alcohol store, whose entire existence was to support a store just outside the city.

It’s why I’m fairly optimistic. More people want Trump gone than they ever did Nixon or Clinton. And I think the R’s deep down know this which is why they want to attack the process itself.

Biggest issue that the Repubs have at present is that Trump’s unpopularity is effectively baked in, there’s no real way to spin it as a result of the impeachment hearings or prior investigations. So the best they can possibly do is try to argue that as much as people may not want him as president*, the Dems deserve to win even less for how “mean” they’ve been to him. And when they make those arguments, it’s not simply about impeachment, as they genuinely believe that if Dems had just rolled over, he’d be a much more popular president*.

I remember going to one bar at a ski area in Utah (Alta, ISTR), and there was a little closet off the end of the bar that they told me had been licensed as a “State Liquor Store”. When you ordered a drink, the bartender had to go over to the closet, get you your (little airline-size) bottle, and ring it up for you separately: and, IIRC, you had to pick it up yourself: they couldn’t “serve” you.

I still recall my one visit (1980) to a State Store in Salt Lake City: a shabby storefront in a crummy part of town: worn linoleum floors and splintery plywood shelves with an inadequate stock of mediocre booze sold at exorbitant prices. And I’ve rarely seen any store so crowded: Black Friday all week long….

Got about an 1” of sleet and ice yesterday that started to melt off a little bit in the afternoon. This morning there is already 2” of wet snow on the ground and it’s still falling at a slow rate.

I put off traveling back to Pennsylvania until tomorrow. There might have been a window last night to make the trip between storms, but I did not want to risk it and the forecasts had things pretty bad in the Poconos region which I pretty much have to travel close to.

So another day with the wood fire and the two cats that are still leery of me.*

* - They’ve been raised by a vegetarian and I think yesterday might have been one of the first times they were offered **turkey** table scraps. A feeding frenzy developed and any trip to the kitchen now involves them following you in to see what you’re fixing.

I was working in Lexington for a couple of years and made it to Woodford and Buffalo Trace. I interviewed for another job in Murray, which I fortunately didn’t get. In California a lot of gas stations with mini-marts sell beer and wine (easy license to get), some might sell the hard stuff too (if they were able to get that license, much more difficult, as I understand it). Though usually to get the hard stuff you’ll need to find a 7/11 or equivalent style store, or go to a grocery store.

Heck, there is still law on the books that says a parent can buy an alcoholic drink in a bar or restaurant and give it to their minor child to drink and it’s perfectly fine. Dates from the immigrant families that would all drink wine at meals. Not as many as used to do that but it’s a guaranteed way to freak out someone from Illinois!

Random alcohol laws are always fascinating to me. Like bars in California have last call at 2 am (usually called around 1:30 or 1:45) but can open back up at 6 am. Can’t have booze outside unless there is an enclosed patio.

When I worked in the Minneapolis Star Tribune back in the 70s, it was such a problem they ran their own rehab facility. The deadly confluence of shift work, the printing business, and a brutally cold climate. I knew if I had grown up there, I’d have been dead.
