I’m watching a youtube video about the upcoming Marvel movies. Thor Love and Thunder will see Valkyrie looking for her queen to serve on the thrown with her. They are actually going to make the main character a lesbian.

One more reason why Christianists (note that I didn’t say Christians) would prefer to burn the country down than live with the rest of us.

They’re also doing the Jane as Thor storyline too. That should piss them off as well. Good.

Antivaxx is mass murder.
Measles outbreak spurred by anti-vaxxers shuts down Samoan government

Of the 53 dead, 48 are children aged 4 and younger.
The government of Samoa will shut down for two days this week while officials try to curb a deadly measles outbreak that has sickened 3,728 and killed 53—48 of whom were children ages 0 to 4 years old.

*snip*

The World Health Organization and UNICEF estimated that Samoa’s measles vaccination rate for infants was just 31% in 2018. That’s down from about 60% to 70% in earlier years and a high of 90% in 2013.

The drop may be partly explained by the tragic deaths of two infants in July 2018, according to the WHO. The infants died on the same day at the same hospital, shortly after they had each received what was supposed to be an MMR vaccine (which protects against measles, mumps, and rubella).
While some quickly blamed the vaccine itself, officials later determined that two nurses had improperly prepared the immunizations. Investigators found that they had mixed in a lethal dose of muscle relaxant, and one of the nurses tried to cover up the error by taking the empty bottle of the muscle relaxant home after retrieving it from the garbage. The two faced charges of manslaughter and were both sentenced to five years in prison in August of this year.

This insane fucker might well end up in the dock at a special international tribunal:
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is the single leading source of anti-vax ads on Facebook

Just two organizations were responsible for the majority of anti-vaccine advertisements on Facebook before the social media giant restricted such content in March of this year, according to a November 13 study in the journal Vaccine.

Of 145 anti-vaccine Facebook advertisements that ran between May 31, 2017 and February 22, 2019, the World Mercury Project and a group called Stop Mandatory Vaccination together ran 54% of them.
The World Mercury Project, which ran the most ads of any single source, is an organization closely aligned with the anti-vaccine group Children’s Health Defense. Both are spearheaded by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., an environmental lawyer turned prolific peddler of dangerous anti-vaccine misinformation. He and his organizations promote conspiracy theories about vaccine safety, including the roundly debunked claim that safe, life-saving immunizations are linked to autism.

Both Bloomberg and Pete were mayors.

Bloomberg was 3-term mayor of the largest city in the United States, home to the United Nations; Buttigieg is mayor of a small city with population of about 100,000. These are vastly different experiences.

I was making the comment in response to this:

He didn’t decide that his initial attempt to be elected to office was a run for the presidency, without any prior public service.

Yes, being the mayor of New York is different than South Bend, but both still count as public service.

But I’d still rather have Pete than Bloomberg. While running for president takes an ego, the idea that you can buy your way in way after others have started campaigning takes one I don’t want in the White House.

I don’t get all the Buttigieg attacks that have emerged the past couple of weeks.

I get that he doesn’t believe everything that self-described Progressives hope for, but that is hardly qualifications for damnation.

There is plenty of acrimony in the Dem nomination process.

First it was “Kamala is a Cop!” that was intensely circulating for a couple of weeks, then recently that has died down.

I for one agree with Pete on this issue (about college). I go farther and assert that trying to call 4 years of college education “free” is itself a from of misdirection. 4 years of college education is a highly expensive affair, by which I mean not the price tag which students see, but the very nature of the activity. Trying to hide that cost blurs over the very preciousness of those 4 years and talent it takes to teach the students.

Let me ruffle a few feathers: I wonder if the real problem is that here we have an openly gay man… who doesn’t jump through all the hoops that Warren-ites think a gay person ought to jump through?

Some news out of Czech Republic.

The City of Prague will sign a sister agreement pact with Taiwan’s capital Taipei, concerning economic, business and cultural cooperation, according to a document that Prague City Hall approved today.

The document states that the agreement is a non-political text on cooperation in economy, business, science, technology, tourism, education, health care and other fields.

The Prague-Taipei agreement still has to be approved by the Prague assembly members, who are to deal with it on December 12.

Prague and Taipei representatives agreed to formalise their cooperation during the visit of the Prague leadership to Taiwan last spring.

news.expats.cz

Czech President Miloš Zeman, a well-known toady of Beijing, and the lickspittles surrounding him are fuming at this decision, along with - as mentioned in the article - the upcoming visit of the President of the Czech Senate to Taiwan sometime early next year. Beijing is equally furious.

Oh, and the Czech PM, Andrej Babiš, has his own problems to deal with as well. The EU Commission has stated that he’s in a conflict of interest with regards to his ownership of Agrofert and also being prime minister. Babiš claims he’s put Agrofert into a trusteeship but it’s glaringly obvious that he’s still very much in control of that particular corporation.

A European Commission audit has confirmed that Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis is in a conflict of interest due to his former business empire that he has put into trust funds, weekly Respekt reported on its website on Sunday, quoting sources.

Reuters could not immediately independently confirm the report, which Respekt said was based on two sources with knowledge of the document.

The European Commission said on Friday it had sent the audit results to the Czech authorities, but said the contents were confidential as the audit procedure was ongoing.

A spokesman for Agrofert said the company had no information on the audit results.

Companies in the Agrofert group, the core of Babis’s assets estimated at $3.5 billion by Forbes, are some of the largest recipients of EU subsidies, both for farming and for investment projects, in the central European country.

They are run by two trust funds since 2017, an arrangement Babis made to meet local law on conflict of interest.

reuters.com

Basically, the EU Commission seems to have found that Babiš is still very much involved in the day-to-day operations of Agrofert (despite his claims to the contrary) and that the Czech Republic is going to have to pay back some €450 million in subsidies they’ve received over the last few years.

Is that “payback” intended to come from government funds, or corporate? €450M is a tidy chunk of change….

That’s a good question. It’s widely believed here that it’ll come out of government funds or the Czech Treasury. Babiš won’t pay it.

Then there’s the issue of whether or not Agrofert is even commercially viable without subsidies; there’s apparently been some back-of-the-envelope calculations that show that without subsidies, Agrofert would be bankrupt within a matter of weeks - they’re basically hemorrhaging money and they probably wouldn’t survive a fiscal quarter. It’s almost certainly one of the reasons Babiš is so desperate to keep that sweet, sweet EU cash flowing.

With the impeachment inquiry charging forward, President Trump’s allies have defended his demand for political investigations from Ukraine by claiming that the government in Kyiv tried to sabotage his candidacy and boost Hillary Clinton in 2016,” Politico reports.

“But the Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee thoroughly investigated that theory and found no evidence that Ukraine waged a top-down interference campaign akin to the Kremlin’s efforts to help Trump win in 2016.”

Gonna be interesting how the house R’s explain this as they keep pushing this moronic narrative

Already have GOP Senators (Kennedy) pushing that narrative that “Ukraine interfered too!”. Or, to be charitable, that Ukraine wanted Clinton to win in 2016. Which seems to equate wanting someone to win is as bad as actively acting to interfere in order to support your preferred candidate in a foreign election.

So apparently I missed that the NYT had a deal about the erosion of abortion rights and access. So they went and assigned blame to the groups that really deserve the blame: the activists who simultaneously were too obsessed with politics and did not play politics enough to stop the natural erosion of these rights. Oh, and Obama for being too weak, apparently.

As pointed out in this Jezebel takedown of the article, they never really get around to putting blame on the folks actually slamming through these laws.

And the Times report fails to mention the lawmakers—both Democrat and Republican—who allowed an insistent minority to shape public policy, advocating draconian abortion laws despite the 77 percent of Americans believe Roe v. Wade should be upheld. Instead of assigning blame to activists for losing the battle, it might have been more helpful to examine how, despite the existence of organizations like Planned Parenthood, we got to a point in which lawmakers in Ohio are seriously considering a bill requiring doctors to re-implant ectopic pregnancies—a feat that is not just unproven, but medically impossible. It’s not just because Planned Parenthood was asleep on the job.

Missing from the discussion is the history of how the right built up the momentum to erode those rights in the first place. Examining the failures of the left without also digging into the strategies of the right effectively scrutinizes the defense without talking about specific battles—with only vague references to any sort of broader war. It’s trying to understand D-Day without mentioning Normandy or WWII. Such an incomplete history may be full of people to blame, but it won’t provide any answers to how it came about, or how to maneuver to a different future.

It’s the same old shit in other words: everything is necessarily the Dems fault for not curbing the natural inclination of the GOP towards authoritarian misery, racism, and misogyny. Par for the course for the Times, it seems.

So, according to the GOP—today—the hacking of the DNC server three years ago right before the election, was a crime?

I disagree. I was rather on the same page, but unsure, and then I read Judd Legum’s column on Popular Information, The Democratic free-for-all, and it convinced me that I was not understanding all of the issues. I still wonder what happens to private colleges, but perhaps a student who really wants to go to one of those can have the equivalent in tuition from his public college to use in attending a private school.

So, once again, there’s something the US can’t do that other industrialized countries have been able to do for a while now.

Of course college costs. Any post-secondary education, such as trade school, costs. And we pay for it. The question becomes do we pay for it now, or pay for it later. If we pay for it now, we use a progressive tax system to make sure people get the education they need to be contributing adults. If we don’t pay for it now, we pay in multiple ways:

1. Graduates are feeding a good chunk of their earnings to loan companies rather than buying houses and cars and vacations and other things in the economy, ultimately meaning this money ends up in the accounts of the wealthy who don’t spend it.

2. Similarly, they aren’t having children now because they can’t afford them.

3. Because they’re having to pay for their loans, they need higher salaries than they otherwise would, which makes things more expensive for us.

3. Even among those who take loans, we’re forcing them to choose between a career they might want vs one they can afford. Would you rather have your doctor be the person who liked biology as a child or the one whose parents paid for the new library to get their kid in the college?

Why it’s still impossible to know what politicians are saying on Facebook

Zuckerberg says that he won’t take down ads from politicians — even if they are deemed false by Facebook’s third-party fact-checkers — because he wants “people can see for themselves what politicians are saying.” But that is not what’s happening.

Yes, Facebook now has an ad library where it makes political ads publicly available. But on November 21, the Trump campaign had over 4700 active ads on Facebook’s platform.

This is a huge change in political discourse that is being facilitated by Facebook. With TV advertising, there are no more than a handful of ads running at any time, and they are, by necessity, broadcast to large audiences. This gives the media a chance to evaluate and call out the most egregiously false ads. Now, there are thousands of ads run simultaneously, microtargeted to slivers of the public.

There is no chance for anyone to see them all, much less evaluate them for accuracy. Even if you were able to identify errors, Facebook would take no action. Facebook also doesn’t reveal the actual audience each ad is targeted to, making it impossible to counterprogram with the facts.

There are ways Facebook could take steps to fix this problem, like restricting the number of ads that any candidate may run simultaneously. But the company has not even acknowledged that the huge quantity of paid political ads is a problem — much less express a willingness to solve it.

He also points out that Zuckerberg’s “philanthropical” organization is an LLC for profit, not a non profit!

On my last vacation, on a boat about one day’s travel past the Azores, I found a bird on the deck, unable to fly. So I collected it and handed it over to the ship people who handle (nonhuman) stowaways.

Since then, I’ve been trying to identify it, with no success. (No picture, you can’t take them with your hands full of Bird.) The websites I’ve found are for North American birds (mid-Atlantic bird, not helpful), and some European bird sites, also no luck. My guess is that this one was migrating anyway. Does anyone have suggestions on websites where I might have more luck?

Or does this ring any bells? Small, about the size and body shape of an American robin, maybe a bit smaller, wings a bit longer in proportion to its body, seemed to have a bit more neck. Beak like a sandpiper, but about 3/4 as long (maybe as long as its head), with a small but distinct hump right after the nares. Color almost uniformly earth brown, maybe some darker shading along the tops of the wings. Black eyes. Ordinary birdie feet — not webbed or raptor-clawed.

Thanks.

re: #181 Hecuba’s daughter

Learned from Morning Joe yesterday that Senator Kennedy went to Oxford. The KGB successfully recruited several students at Cambridge; they also tried at Oxford, with apparently more limited success. In any case, why wouldn’t Kennedy have been a potential target for the KGB? Sleeper agent?

TBH I don’t think he’s a sleeper. I think he’s just a hack. I think that’s the case with most elected Republicans.

For a Southerner like Kennedy, Oxford could mean Ole Miss.

I have never seen a President disparage allies at the expense of an adversary the way Trump does. That’s what makes him so awful.

I would happily live in one of these! Providing the engineering is properly done, of course!

Just heard on NPR, DT re. impeachment process: “It’s a fix. You know what a fix is? It’s a FIX!”

Glad we cleared that up.

In a world where international cooperation is arguably more important than ever, Trump has alienated allies like no one else before him. Bush and Reagan’s FP were awful imo but at least they sought out the Blairs, Kohls, & sigh even Thatchers of our allies. Trump doesn’t have a single true democratic ally. He has tons of dictator pals whom he would rather help than our allies. Soft power is dead.

Damn damn damn.

She was my top pick.

She was told she needed to drop in time to take her name off the California ballot in order to avoid a disaster of possibly losing the state and precipitating a primary bid against her, possibly from Tom Steyer.

You know how the US was able to put a man on the moon?

Because a previous generation of taxpayers picked up the tab to educate the engineers, physicists, programmers, machinists, etc that it took to be able to do such a project.

A lot of “Hidden Figures” helped
