Oh, give me a clone
Of my own flesh and bone
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
And after it’s grown,
Then my own little clone
Will be of the opposite sex.

Clone, clone of my own,
With its Y chromosome changed to X.
And when I’m alone
With my own little clone
We will both think of nothing but sex.

In a just world, that would be true but we are stuck with this world. Yes — Hillary faced over 25 years of hatred on the nation stage, but with contemporary social media anyone (except Trump) can be torn down in months. All candidates have flaws — for some reason the evil that is Trump is immune to attacks that would bring down any other candidate. All candidates are subject to immediate ruin with the combined effort of social media, RW outlets, and MSM. Think of what Kenneth Vogel almost accomplished against Biden — and Biden is still susceptible courtesy of the continuing RW attack machine. Think of what the BernieBros do against anyone who isn’t Bernie — and how they will not support moderates, even though most Democrats are more to the center and not part of the squad.

Recall how Trump fights — he ignores questions and attacks his opponent. Hillary won the debates but he won the election. None of the Democrats (except Biden) have Hillary’s resume. And I doubt he would have been willing to be on the same stage as Kamala anyway. Trump is the leader of a cult who are either blind to his lies or don’t care. And his administration is replete with fanatics (Barr) or toadies (Pompeo) who are bringing our system down to support him.

We did win back the House in 2018 — but I fear that winning the presidency will be a herculean task, especially with the Senate’s refusal to protect our elections.

A hollow voice says, Impeachmoot now!  Dec 3, 2019 • 10:05:29pm

And while I’m here, I’m reposting this from downstairs.

I need the help of the Lizard Brain Trust.

On my last vacation, on a boat about one day’s travel past the Azores, I found a bird on the deck, unable to fly. So I collected it and handed it over to the ship people who handle (nonhuman) stowaways.

Since then, I’ve been trying to identify it, with no success. (No picture, you can’t take them with your hands full of Bird.) The websites I’ve found are for North American birds (mid-Atlantic bird, not helpful), and some European bird sites, also no luck. My guess is that this one was migrating anyway. Does anyone have suggestions on websites where I might have more luck?

Or does this ring any bells? Small, about the size and body shape of an American robin, maybe a bit smaller, wings a bit longer in proportion to its body, seemed to have a bit more neck. Beak like a sandpiper, but about 3/4 as long (maybe as long as its head), with a small but distinct hump right after the nares. Color almost uniformly earth brown, maybe some darker shading along the tops of the wings. Black eyes. Ordinary birdie feet — not webbed or raptor-clawed.

Thanks.

re: #99 A hollow voice says, Impeachmoot now!

Does anyone have suggestions on websites where I might have more luck?

We use inaturalist.org at work, (and I usually ID my photos with it as well.) The coverage is global, but I can’t speak to how much info they get outside of North America. (I once used it to try and identify some snails I found in Costa Rica, and it wasn’t real helpful, but that might have changed. Or it just might be not a lot of people are as interested in snails as I am.)

re: #99 A hollow voice says, Impeachmoot now!

And while I’m here, I’m reposting this from downstairs.

Thanks.

Monteiro’s storm petrel?

Thanks. It looks rather alarmingly complicated, but I’ll see if I can figure it out. I’m getting more curious about just what the bird was as I keep looking and not finding anything.

Monteiro’s storm petrel?

No, the beak is wrong, and the darker streak is along the top edge of the wings. But it’s certainly the right area. Since we were at least 250 miles west of the Azores, I’m thinking it was someone migrating, since there’s really nothing there for a “local” bird.

Wow, what a mighty citadel of journalistic integrity over at The Hill: their basic guideline seems to be:

”Our official policy is to cover Washington politics without bias, but the owner doesn’t want Trump criticized: so use your own judgement” ?

TBH, I doubt whether this attitude is restricted to The Hill, or to Trump-humpers….

The power of forgiveness.

Botham Jean was killed by off-duty Dallas police officer Amber Guyger after she mistakenly entered his apartment and thought it was her own. Guyger shot Jean and said she believed he was a home intruder.

During the trial, Jean’s 18-year-old brother captured the nation’s attention when he forgave Guyger and asked the judge if he could give her a hug.

“I love you just like anyone else, and I’m not going to hope you rot and die,” Jean said to Guyger. “I personally want the best for you. I wasn’t going to say this in front of my family: I don’t even want you to go to jail. I want the best for you because I know that’s exactly what Botham would want for you. Give your life to Christ. I think giving your life to Christ is the best thing Botham would want for you.”

The ILEA awarded Jean the 2019 Ethical Courage Award at their annual conference this week.

The rule of law in the Czech Republic may be under assault, but it ain’t dead yet.

Attorney General Pavel Zeman annulled the decision to stop prosecution of Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Jana Mayerová in the Stork’s Nest case. He described the original suspension of the prosecution as illegal and premature. Their prosecution in the case of alleged subsidy fraud continues and the file returns to Prague to the supervisory prosecutor.

(via Google Translate)

Original source, in Czech: idnes.cz (autoplay video embedded at link)

The Stork’s Nest is a conference hall that was built near Benešov, about 50 km from Prague. There was an investigation into alleged subsidies fraud used to build the conference hall, but that case was dropped three months ago. Today, the Czech AG reversed that decision. Looks like PM Babiš’ woes are intensifying by the day.

We finally got rid of the fruit flies here on the Rhine.

Vintners dump their pressed grapes back out in the vineyards as fertilizer. Which is fine if there is a hard frost to kill the fruit flies, but since it stayed mild and sunny until the end of November, the little buggers were a real plague, getting into any open beverages left sitting out and infesting fruit baskets and compost bins.

Rep. Ocala Council Blocks Winning Candidate From Office Over 33-Year-Old Felony Conviction, Delays Decision On Another Election

now this is closer to a coup

Ocala dramatically blocked its newly elected councilman from taking office Tuesday night over a 33-year-old felony cocaine conviction. The case is believed to be the first time a Florida politician has been disqualified after an election because of serious crimes.

He told the council Tuesday that he has been seeking clemency since 2012, and submitted his most recent appeal last year.

Oliver, a chaplain of Deliverance Outreach Ministries of Ocala, defeated Bethea 52% to 48% - by only 124 votes - in a runoff election Nov. 19 to win Ocala’s District 2 seat. The seat, previously held by retiring Council President Rich, holds a four-year term and represents citizens in the northwest part of the city.

I think the more important corollary to Kristol’s question is really “how far has Nunes gotten with these “defamation” suits?” So far, as best I can tell, Congressman Cowpoke’s Big Legal Strategery has been to make loudmouthed “threats” of litigation on Twitter, let various social/mainstream media outlets pick them up and amplify them, , and then file some papers with a court in (? VA ?) . All which doesn’t seem (to my non-lawyer eye, anyway) to be eating up an awful lot of billable hours: but succeeding in generating publicity. Most of it mockery, true, but still publicity.

Anyway, Nunes is a Republican: finding money never seems to be an issue for them…..

Yeah why would the president’s personal attorney be talking with OMB is a damn good question. This all stinks.

ISTR reading somewhere that OMB is where “Acting WH CoS” Mick Mulvaney has his (formal) office. So Mulvaney - or at least his phone - might have been on the other end of Rudy’s calls. Probably as he was sitting on the Resolute desk, with the speaker on, and Trump yelling in the background, but never mind….

I’m just going to leave this here and go out and buy a couple of pounds of chocolate.

Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a myth, according to an expert who said that social conditioning in Western society makes women falsely attribute their emotions to their hormones.

Speaking on the Clue Hormonal podcast, Jane Usher, a professor of women’s health psychology at Western Sydney University, said that women from other cultures do not report many emotional signs of PMS.

She said that a long-standing ‘pathologising discourse’ - dating back to the 20th century - is the reason many women believe they’re having symptoms.

According to Jane, all women experience emotional distress throughout their cycle, however they will attribute it to their periods if they are pre-menstrual, rather than blaming things like their relationship or work life.

And she added that those in caring relationships are less likely to report symptoms than those in more one-sided partnerships.

That’s because they, and only they, are truly America. They are the only truly legitimate authority (and media like the NYT agree), only they deserve to be obeyed and respected. Thusly, when they are in charge, they must be respected and obeyed or else. But when they’re not in charge, it’s inherently illegitimate, Anti-American, and monstrous tyranny that must be fought and demeaned at all times.

The only ‘legitimate’ governance in this country is GOP “governance”. And again…press like the NYT seem to agree.

Yeah, but when it comes to having loudmouthed clowns try to derail Congressional hearings with obfuscating bullshit, the Republicans have a really deep bench…

So it looks like the GOP “strategy” for the HJC is another stab at their tactics they tried in Intelligence? I.e., sputter, bluster, deflect with irrelevancies, and bitch about “process”. While studiously avoiding any substantive discussion of the charges against President Trump/his creatures (outside of flat, sneering dismissal)? What a surprise….
