WTFITS?

George Zimmerman, acquitted of killing unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin in 2012, is now suing Martin’s family and others for more than $100 million.

…..
OH, look, A giant shit is behind it all…

Zimmerman’s attorney Larry Klayman, a former U.S. Justice Department prosecutor and the founder of the conservative activist group Judicial Watch, said the case against his client hinged on testimony from “fake witness” Diamond Eugene.

Reposting due to being CL’d:

I wouldn’t get disheartened by the initial headlines we’ll see from today, whether that the hearing was “boring,” that the Repubs made a lot of noise about “process,” or that the experts called were “divided.” We heard a lot of the same opinions masquerading as “analysis” during the Intel Committee hearings and they did little to stop the Dems from solidifying the case for impeachment. There’s a whole day until the next hearing, plenty of time for “new media” to finish the job Turley started of shredding whatever remaining credibility he had.

Their “case” hinges on basically reviving the BS that the wingnut media threw up as a smokescreen during the trial, that this one witness was a “fake” and that the prosecution knew it.

As I said downstairs, the parties bringing this tort want you to believe that they have rock solid evidence that the prosecution, the family of the victim, and the family’s lawyer all conspired to bring forward someone totally unconnected to the case and convince her to endanger her future to lie on the stand.

Be wonderful if they countersued and bankrupted his ass for stalking and then murdering their son. The burden of proof isn’t as high in civil court and I don’t think Zimmerman or his attorneys considered that before this but still awful for the Martin family nonetheless.

Considering the accusations being made towards the family, let alone their attorney and the state of Florida….well, speaking as a layman, I think they have a rock solid case to sue him for defamation of character and emotional suffering.

Just like hypocrisy doesn’t matter any more (unless it’s a Democrat), objectivity doesn’t exist anymore. Everybody is biased, therefore bias is good for your team. Because the other team is biased, right?

This is more intellectual cancer. Objective truth matters, so does objectivity. We cannot let objectivity be voided as a principle.

I am really not sure how much more of this I can take. There are so MANY of them who just filibuster, and some yelling. I do wish Nadler would stop someone like Gaetz interrupting and yelling at a witness. Schiff would have gaveled him down. (And I would like to take a gavel to him, right on top of his pointy head!)

The only way for the US to even survive in something close to its present form going forward, much less prosper, is the end of the GOP as a national party.

Unfortunately, I don’t see that happening.

I had to laugh, a while back, when my wingnut cousin was talking about Latino immigrants and said, “I live among these people”, which is exactly what Lee J. Cobb’s character says in his “You can’t trust these people!” monologue.

Funny thing is, I looked up the demographics for the town where he lives, and per the Census there are - I shit you not - only about 30 Latinos in his whole town of 2800.

for me its not only a wondrous character study of American archetypes, the acting and dialogue (for its time setting) is simply extraordinary, everyone gets lines, scenes and opportunity to show who their character is. For me the dialogue between the jurors is realistic, be it the football coach Balsam to Webber’s ad executive to Weston’s baseball fan. All realistic, utterly believable, you KNOW these people or someone like them.

The story also is revelatory in an understanding of basic civics that is so lacking today.

Well, Republicans are filling the air with fauxtrage over a play on words regarding the President’s son’s name and titles of nobility, bcause this is the only useful thing they got out of the whole day. And Jonathan Turley was publicly exposed as an attention whore who will say whatever he has to to get in front of a camera.

Charlie Pierce: The Democratic Race Is Poorer for Losing Kamala Harris

Harris should still be in the race. She is a brilliant, accomplished woman who showed her leadership chops when she reduced Brett Kavanaugh to tears during his Senate confirmation hearings. … Harris qualified for the December 19 hoedown, but she couldn’t sustain her campaign until then. (Two whole weeks!) Instead, we’ll get Tom Steyer, but not Julian Castro. Tulsi Gabbard, but (probably) not Booker. How is this good for anyone? In what is arguably a populist moment, this is simply crazy.

Kamala Harris will still be a force. Right now, she has to be at the top of every vice-presidential shortlist. Any Democrat elected has to consider her for attorney general. And, once the Senate trial starts. she’ll likely get all the free airtime that she couldn’t get while running for president. In addition, she is the most important outstanding endorsement on the board right now. But the field is infinitely poorer without her, and completely out of touch with the actual dynamics of the 2020 election.

Edited to clarify the quote.

It’s time to ask whether we’re seeing the beginnings of a “realignment” with this global right wing movement against the values and even the interests of the United States and the West.

That’s the ultimate end point for reactionary/fundamentalist politics. Life in a pluralistic liberal democracy is at odds with their world view.

I mean, it would make sense for Biden or Sanders, since they’d both turn 80 during their first term (and both will be older at their inauguration than Reagan was when he left office). But I wonder if that would weaken their standing in the primary.

Populism is untrustworthy, but the Democrats need to find a way to deal with issues of jobs and economic stagnation. “Business mostly as usual” while only the Davos set seems to be doing well isn’t going to cut it.

The sticking point is that the Democrats are going to have to make an ask of their donor class, and plutocrats don’t like that.

Traditionally in US politics, one major party or the other would make pressing populist issues their own in order to ensure their survival.

I think the calcification of the two parties into racist R and anti-racist D since the civil rights realignment has inhibited that process.

You want to cry about triggered and microaggressions. Don’t go around making it out to be an outrage that a professor used the President’s son’s name to make a point that we don’t have an official nobility in this country. She didn’t insult Barron as a person. She did make maybe an offhand remark about his name but really a tame comment and their outrage might be more believable if Trump ever showed any affection to Barron except to use him as a crutch against criticism.

That we don’t have barons in this country even though people like Barron’s father would want it that way given the way his nepotistic attitude per Barron’s half sister and his brother in law. She just said that and referenced Barron’s name. It was a play on his name. It was a criticism of Barron’s father not Barron himself.

Today I learned something vile. Was listening to one of my fave podcasts, “This Podcast Will Kill You” and the topic was lead poisoning. (Podcast is usually about infectious diseases but they’re branching out a bit it seems.)

Highly educational and always interesting for those who aren’t faint of heart.

Anywho, lead poisoning. Seems that some kids and moms in Baltimore were used as guinea pigs. Single mothers and their kids were purposely exposed to lead. No, not informed. Can you guess the ethnicity of these people? I bet you can. Poverty stricken, of course.

So you might be thinking, well, horrible, but stuff like this happened a long time ago and it was awful and ignorant and criminal. Guess what? The “study” started in 1991! JFC

So now I’m going to read “Lead Wars” one of the sources for the pod.

I totally expect the cynical bastards that run Trump’s reelection campaign to grift off this remark. For the fuck your feelings crowd, they’re awfully sensitive when the shoe is on the other foot. It really was a pretty tame comment. And Trump himself has said of child migrants being “no angels” so I really don’t give a fuck about Barron being used in an offhand remark pointing out that we don’t have official nobility in this country especially given that Barron’s father is the king of nepotism given how Barron’s older half sister and brother in law are given positions of power and influence they’ve done nothing to earn.

It goes on…

Just because you named your daughter Chelsea doesn’t mean you gave birth to a Boston suburb.

Just because you named your son Hunter doesn’t mean he has to go out and shoot deer.

Just because you named your son Eric (and spelled it with a C instead of a K) doesn’t mean he’s a Viking.

Just because you named your son Donald, Jr. doesn’t mean he’s an asshole just like you—oh wait, I guess it does.

So a few weeks ago, I posted about how my best friend’s son, a 19 year old college sophomore, appeared to be turning into a Trump-idolizing Young Republican.

Welp, looks like his journey to the Dark Side is 100%. This post popped up on my feed tonight:

That’s my response below the post.

I would imagine him being 19 and on the internet, I’ll be getting a response. Mine is going to be

“I’ve known you since you were a toddler and wish you nothing but the best. It’s up to you to decide what you want to do with your life, but I’m telling you now: this is a dark, dark road you’re going down. Be conservative all you want, but for God’s sake, make it rooted in reality.”

The corker is the kid is studying rhetoric and social media, and this is his model of reality and critical thinking.

I’m just so upset by all of this. He’s a 19 year old deciding that he wants the political and amoral views of a 60 year old modern day Republican. This shit is why I roll my eyes everything I hear how Gen Z, or whatever the group following the Millennials is called, is going to outright reject and bury the GOP.

Trump is literally the only President they’ve been aware of. They think this shit is normal. And that, above all else, is what scares me.

I just hope he’s going through a phase. Thing is, when I was 19, two of my friends got hooked on listing to this jolly old fat guy on the radio making fun of hippies and liberals. Funniest thing they ever heard in their lives.

This was 1985, when Limbaugh was just getting rolling. Their view pretty much calcified right then and there. I’ve actually mentioned one of these guys before: my “independent since 2005” buddy who has always voted Republican for the past 34 years.

The other guy is actually worse, and that’s directly from the mouth of Captain Independent above.

For the sake of my friendship with this kid’s dad, I’m either going to mute or outright drop him. I keep looking at him, though, and looking at my acquaintances, and I don’t have high hopes.

They are indeed enjoying their undeserved white supremacist superiority mindset. The feeling of being superior to everyone else simply because one falls out of the correct vagina is a defining characteristic of supremacists around the globe. It is not a mindset easily changed. If the supremacist’s environment is not changed before age 21 or so it is pretty much life-defining.
