to me commercialized christmas and thanksgiving have a common undertone that everyone is doing and feeling the same thing. That if you’re not, then there is something wrong with you, you are missing out, and you should get with the program. Traveling ‘home’, ‘family’ gatherings, music, food, gift giving, forced revelry, ‘traditions’ that never were in the first place except in the minds of ad-men and lyricists, twisting and turning myths into some ‘sense’ all in pursuit of sales.

i’m reminded of the comedian who said something like ‘it’s the time of year you look forward to traveling home and 30 minutes after you arrive remember why you live 3,000 miles away.’

i’m not a scrooge and i don’t begrudge anyone their dreams, fantasies, or whatever they look forward to. It’s just not for me.

the only music i play every year is Duke Ellington’s Three Suites, and the Lieutenant Kije Suite (which of course had nothing to do with xmas, but was appropriated (Troika) and even put to sappy words.

in fact it’s music so good, i play them all year long. Try doing that with “White Christmas” in May.

These guys court the support of people who talk about hanging journalists. That’s who Barron’s father is supported by. Barron’s mom showed she doesn’t care about refugee kids. Frankly neither of them have shown anything that suggests they really care about Barron as a person but just to use him as a shield for criticism. The point made about barons and the kid’s name was relevant given the undue influence on the presidency that Barron’s older sister and brother in law have as well as the RNC buying his brother’s book in bulk. She also apologized immediately. Right wingers can dish it out but they can’t take it.

Bleeech: I can’t figure out what’s the worse scenario: that Alex Jones is just a stock con-man spinning sick conspiracy tales to fleece the rubes, or that he actually (in some part) actually believes the shit he peddled. My favorite line from that NYT piece:

“Look at this great city shot,” he said pointing out the window at Austin’s skyline. As soon as I pulled the camera off him, he reached for the white Dixie cup [filled with vodka] . This speaks to what the career diplomatic corps testified in regard to Ukraine that they are undermined by political appointees more interested in aiding Trump personally than effective FP.

The positive aspect that I see coming from this is that the atmosphere and the level of discourse seen and heard at the hearings was much higher than the dumpster fire of the MSM or the fever swamps of social media.

We got to hear from diplomats, legal experts and eyewitnesses and although the GOP did their best to dismiss them, they were not completely drowned out by both-siderism or Russian bots.

Especially when it’s constantly coupled with the assumption of bad faith and illegitimacy on the Dems part. Any fucking hack can spew an attack line from the Republicans and be treated and dignified like they just said a gospel truth. Dems say something true and non-controversial, and they’re screamed down for daring to criticize their betters.

This is why I have precious little faith that anything will come of this process. The media has picked its side, and will ensure that disinformation rules and that the GOP is the eternal victim to be pitied, even as they rob us blind and tear down all our institutions from within.

The Senate shall have the sole Power to try all Impeachments. When sitting for that Purpose, they shall be on Oath or Affirmation. When the President of the United States is tried, the Chief Justice shall preside: And no Person shall be convicted without the Concurrence of two thirds of the Members present.

I think that there are several other reasons for not being in a rush that he did not mention…

1. It means that the Impeachment process keeps control of the new cycle rather than surrendering it back to the Republicans (Trump and Senate).

2. The Democrats still need to corner McConnell like a trapped rat so that he and the Senate Republicans will either do the right thing or will face severe consequences in November.

3. Continuing the impeachment process seems to be helping the Democratic candidates in National elections. Why surrender that without any sort of benefit from the Republicans.

I think that Ms Pelosi is going to pursue this as long it keeps bringing dividends. And good for her!

I would not be troubled by such a prospect. It would certainly frame Republican dirty tricks in a certain light. And it is pretty certain that there will Republican dirty tricks around then.

I wonder how McConnell would game that and respond. He and Trump have already poisoned politics. And I do not think that the Democrats have any trust that Trump would honor any of his own agreements.

I got an email from Sen. Chris Murphy, CN, about the aid to Lebanon. The first half is about a congressional trip to a conference in Bahrain, where he pushed for a halt to the war in Yemen. After talking to a former ambassador to Lebanon about the mysterious hold on military aid, he jumped to Lebanon, and since I can’t find his text on his website, I’m going to copy the whole thing.

He had given public testimony earlier in the week about the promise of the organic, growing protest movement in Lebanon. Hundreds of thousands of Lebanese—Christian, Sunni, and Shiite—have been demonstrating for forty days for an end to rampant corruption within the government. Much of the corruption comes from Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which is a political power in Lebanon, and these crowds of young people have their sights trained on reducing Hezbollah’s corruption as much as any other political party. Feltman pulls out his cell phone and shows me the 1,700 Hezbollah-bot generated text messages that have been left on his phone (Hezbollah publicized his cell phone number) since his testimony. “Something different is happening,” says Feltman. “I’ve never seen Hezbollah this nervous. If Murphy’s analysis is correct - and, if a bit simplified, it probably fundamentally is - this is just another piece of inexplicable foreign-policy malpractice on the part of the (Mal)Administration. Unfortunately, Hezbollah and its people aren’t going anywhere, and are going to be -armed- players in Lebanese politics like it or not. But if aiding the “legitimate” government and supporting non-Hezbollah popular protests can reduce Hezb’s (and Iran’s) influence - on the (relative) cheap, and without (American) bloodshed, holding up military makes little sense.

Maybe there’s a Trump golf course near Beirut that’s having permit problems??

Back in November 2016, just after the election, I attended a panel discussion put on by the Northwestern School of Journalism Alumni Association about the 2016 election.

This same guy, James Rosen, who worked for Fox at the time, was on it. I found him arrogant, pompous, uninterested in any sort of meaningful discussion, and toxic.

From what I could see, he completely poisoned the discussion. The moderator, Cheryl Jackson and the panel members, particularly Katie Glueck and Kelly O’Donnell tried desperately to save the discussion. But it was hopeless and I left early.

Realizing this makes Speaker Pelosi’s response even more appreciated.

I thought it was a simple example to remind the American public of the type of government laid out in the Constitution. Trump has double-down and amplified the victimhood and outrage the right has been nursing for years, and unfortunately, the sleaziest among us have created ways to monetize the all of the perceived and manufactured slights.

I used to say after my parents retired that my dad took up golf and my Fox-watching mom took up nursing grudges. All I’m saying is there’s a market.

The Florida GOP candidate whose fundraising email said that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) should be hanged isn’t apologizing for his attacks against the Muslim congresswoman.

On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Times reported that George Buck, who was in the running to unseat Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL), pushed a baseless conspiracy theory in the email sent last month that accused Omar of secretly working on behalf of the Qatari government.

The Times reported that Buck wrote in the email — which also reportedly mentioned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) — that “we should hang these traitors where they stand.”

That seems a little extreme. The guys been a congressman for 7 years, he is 67 years old and decided he doesn’t want to put up with the bullshit anymore. I don’t begrudge anyone who wants to retire, even a congressman. He is from a pretty safe dem district, let someone younger with more zest for the job take over.

The Florida GOP candidate whose fundraising email said that Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) should be hanged isn’t apologizing for his attacks against the Muslim congresswoman.

On Wednesday, the Tampa Bay Times reported that George Buck, who was in the running to unseat Rep. Charlie Crist (D-FL), pushed a baseless conspiracy theory in the email sent last month that accused Omar of secretly working on behalf of the Qatari government.

The Times reported that Buck wrote in the email — which also reportedly mentioned House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) — that “we should hang these traitors where they stand.”
