So Long Marianne
Words & Music by Leonard Cohen

Come over to the window, my little darling
I’d like to try to read your palm
I used to think I was some kind of Gypsy boy
Before I let you take me home

Now so long, Marianne
It’s time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again

Well, you know that I love to live with you
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us

Now so long, Marianne
It’s time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again

We met when we were almost young
Deep in the green lilac park
You held on to me like I was a crucifix
As we went kneeling through the dark

Oh, so long, Marianne
It’s time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again

Your letters, they all say that you’re beside me now
Then why do I feel alone?
I’m standing on a ledge and your fine spider web
Is fastening my ankle to a stone

Now so long, Marianne
It’s time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again

For now I need your hidden loveI
‘m cold as a new razorblade
You left when I told you I was curious
I never said that I was brave

Oh, so long, Marianne
It’s time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again

Oh, you are really such a pretty one
I see you’ve gone and changed your name again
And just when I climbed this whole mountainside
To wash my eyelids in the rain

Oh, so long, Marianne
It’s time that we began to laugh
And cry and cry and laugh about it all again

Okay, this is weird. The other day, I posted a comment about Nikki Haley and the flag crap and put the link to an old page I did. That page started getting more and more views and I thought, “How many people saw that one comment?” Just now, I noticed that the old page is now in the Featured Pages list, so now it makes sense.

Just goes to show ya—everything old is new again!

There’s a lot of stupid people in the responses. Most common: Nuh-uh China devalued it’s currency 10% so he’s not paying more. Even if that were true (it’s not), China devaluing it’s currency applies to all purchasers of the components, which would still place him at a competitive disadvantage against foreign companies not subject to the tariff.

CNN: ‘We’ve gone this far’: Farmers stick with Trump over trade

Pennsylvania farmer Bill Boyd said he supported Trump’s trade war originally, when he thought it would be wrapped up in a few months. But now that it’s dragged on, he thinks it was a “bad idea.”
“I think he’s backstabbing the main people who got him into office in all those Midwest states who help to vote him in,” Boyd said, but added that it’s likely he will vote for Trump again.
“Unless they (Democrats) come up with a better alternative, I am going to vote for him again,” he said.

You know what the better Democratic alternative is? Not starting an unwinnable trade war, you fucking moron.

Where are the stories about people in the Q cult? It’s so compelling to listen to people spout batshit insane conspiracy theories, let’s understand why they’re morons, an important story. Or we can just say ‘they’re morons’ and move on to more important stories like Peloton commercials.

In other news, I’m planning on doing a Beef Wellington. Wifey has demanded lamb for chistmas so I can plan for maybe the Superb Owl. My butcher will sell me the proper cut but they also do a little baking: they’ll sell me the pastry if I give them an order.

Question is: do I ‘practice’ by making one sooner to ensure success for the Superb Owl? This seems like the responsible adult thing to do. Don’t want to take any chances.

There was an element of racism there, but the biggest driver is that Trump sold them on a bill of goods that they had to know he was never going to be able to deliver upon. He promised them a “great” trade deal where they’d get everything they wanted (more goods sold, higher sales prices, less competition) and they’d give little to nothing in return. The idea that we’re still the biggest swinging dick around and the rest of the world owes us their gratitude still drives a lot of wingnuts to think we can name whatever terms we like and our “allies/partners” have to accept them because we’re the “only game in town.”

A local butcher does +/- 5lb leg of lamb roasts from local sources. I have to see if I can brown it in my 10” Staub cast iron skillet. I have a larger stainless skillet with a copper bottom or a cast iron dutch oven, but that Staub is insane. It’s got an enamel coating that is still slightly porous and caramelizes as well as raw cast iron. Stupid expensive but I’ll be using it for years and years. A non-coated similar pan is about $25 LOL. But I don’t have to worry about leaving food in it or rust.

Interesting! So did I this afternoon.

Fascinating film. For me the most impressive achievement was how the film showed the soldiers as real people, not abstract symbols. And it really succeeded in humanizing those British soldiers of 100 years ago. At least for me.

It reminded me of the lyrics from this song about WW1:

Or are you a stranger without even a name,
Forever enshrined behind some glass pane
In an old photograph, torn and tattered and stained,
And fading to yellow in a brown, leather frame

He’s POTUS. He’s a billionaire. He has a gorgeous wife. He bangs porn stars on the side. He lives in the White House. He has a tower with his name on it, and the best golf resort in Florida.

A very unhappy “successful person” who is extremely jealous of his predecessor and uses childish nicknames to describe perceived enemies. Trump is the least successful president in my lifetime. He’s an unhealthy bigot trying to masquerade as a “stable genius”. World leaders literally laugh at him behind his back.

It has been pointed out that if he had simply invested his inheritance in a stock market fund, he would most likely be richer that he is now, but not (in)famous enough to get himself elected President

And there’s Donny, saying that Rudy will not only provide a “report” to Barr and the DOJ, but will also appear to testify before Congress. This is a bit like Nixon boasting that he’d not only have the Plumbers produce a report to hand over the DOJ, but also would be appearing before Congress to testify about how the DNC were engaged in activities that totally warranted wiretapping their offices.

Substitute announcing of an investigation without actually carrying out an investigation. And then plant whatever rumor they want of the contents. Rudy can lie about it. Barr can lie about it. Trump can lie about it. And nothing ever has to be produced. And the nothing-burger can be buried on page 7 after the election.

Question is: do I ‘practice’ by making one sooner to ensure success for the Superb Owl? This seems like the responsible adult thing to do. Don’t want to take any chances.

Back when my husband and I did a lot of entertaining for big groups of horse people, coming from all over, I did a lot of fancy cooking, and almost always used at least one dish I had never done before. It is stimulating! (grin) My husband thought I was nuts, and so did my mother, but it engaged me in the process and I only had one disaster: the very first dinner for a guest after we got married, when I had never really cooked before. Large piece of meat cooked incorrectly to the point it turned out to be a solid dry chunk of near-charcoal. Learned from that one!

WaPo Opinions
The world is doing much better than the bad news makes us think by Arthur C. Brooks

There is a natural human bias toward bad news. The title of a 1998 article in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology sums it up: “Negative Information Weighs More Heavily on the Brain.” Negative stimuli get our attention much more than positive stimuli — which makes evolutionary sense for survival. Nice things are enjoyable; bad things can be deadly, so focus on them. And given that, in the news media, attention equals money, we can see the commercial reason for a lack of headlines such as “Millions not going to bed hungry tonight.”

There is still a great deal of work to be done around the world, but the good news from the Prosperity Index and from people such as Gates and Pinker should be much more salient in our thinking. Bad news doesn’t just hold our attention; it also demobilizes us because, particularly when it concerns people far away, it suggests that disaster is inevitable, when in fact it is not. Hope — the belief that something can be done, and we can do it — inspires action. Bad news, especially in world poverty, often stimulates hopelessness and, thus, inaction.

The world is not getting worse; it is getting indisputably better for most countries and most people. Billions of our brothers and sisters are freer, healthier and more prosperous than they would ever have been in human history. We should be thankful for that this holiday season, and resolve to push even harder.

Barefoot Grin  Dec 8, 2019 • 7:45:10am

“Before we talk about responsibility, we have to consider what the ethics of a responsible person is. What are the words that a responsible individual repeats to himself throughout his life? I think these words are, ‘Remember that your path will be difficult, at times unbearably so. All your loved ones will die. All your plans will go awry. You will be betrayed and abandoned. And you cannot escape death. Life is suffering. Accept it. But once you accept it, once you accept the inevitability of suffering, you must still accept your cross and follow your dream, because otherwise things will only get worse. Be an example, be someone on whom others can depend. Do not obey despots, fight for the freedom of body and soul, and build a country in which your children can be happy.’

“Is this really what we are taught? Is this really the ethics that children absorb at school? Are these the kinds of heroes we honor? No. Our society, as currently constituted, suppresses any possibility of human development. [Fewer than] ten per cent of Russians possess ninety per cent of the country’s wealth. Some of these wealthy individuals are, of course, perfectly decent citizens, but most of this wealth is accumulated not through honest labor that benefits humanity but, plainly, through corruption.

“An impenetrable barrier divides our society in two. All the money is concentrated at the top and no one up there is going to let it go. All that’s left at the bottom—and this is no exaggeration—is despair.”

If you didn’t know otherwise, you might think this is about America, but it was the courtroom statement of a 21-yo Russian activist who just got [an apparently light] sentence of three years probation for “extremism,” according to Masha Gessen’s introduction to the translation she provides in this recent New Yorker article.

Here is the end of the paragraph: “Knowing that they have nothing to hope for, that, no matter how hard they try, they cannot bring happiness to themselves or their families, Russian men take their aggression out on their wives, or drink themselves to death, or hang themselves. Russia has the world’s [second] highest rate of suicide among men. As a result, a third of all Russian families are single mothers with their kids. I would like to know: Is this how we are protecting the institution of the family?”

Ever notice in movies that every bombmaker always uses the same color wires the exact same way so the hero always knows what to cut

hey teddy,

lets say you are right and the dem position is ‘garbage’
and lets say the R’s are right and there is no ‘crime’

the house is about to vote to impeach trump - it’s 99.9% assured
sure it will be a ‘partisan’ vote the way you guys are talking

so the president will in fact be impeached by the house when there is no crime

impeached
for all time
nevermore not impeached
not an ‘illegitimate’ or ‘illegal’ impeachment
by the congressional record - impeached

learn your constitution - some ‘garbage’ eh?

Wrong question

-do you have any actual proof or evidence that Ukraine …
Or do you merely want to start fishing for something

Ted Cruz was lying as usual. As a reminder, back in 2016, organizations that classified candidates by their truthfulness ranked Trump as the most dishonest — but the runner-up was Ted. He’s a liar as is everyone in the Congress or administration who supports Trump.

Of course there will be no discussion by the GOP of whether said “meddling” (by any foreign power) in the 2016 should be addressed in terms of questioning the results of that election. Or how the Senate majority leader punted on addressing it at the time.

I suspect that if pressed the GOP talking heads will say that the meddling failed since it was attempting to throw the election to Clinton.

McConnell didn’t punt — he deliberately and maliciously sabotaged the president to aid his candidate. He knew exactly what he was doing.

This is why these “Cletus Safaris” are so exhausting: They readily admit that voting for Trump has directly led to them getting cornholed without lube, BUT they are going to stick with him because the Dems are not offering them a better bribe…er, “alternative.”

It’s no secret that Evangelicals have been making a deliberate, concerted effort to infiltrate the armed forces since the 90s. When their civilian leadership switched its loyalty to Russia, Evangelical activists in the military followed suit.

Russia, along with being a militaristic, authoritarian plutocracy, is also a homophobic, theocracy.

Just what the Evangelicals and Conservatives want to see, only difference being that they want a fundamentalist Protestant theocracy instead of a Russian Orthodox one.

Maybe it’s because QAnon and the Russians and etc have a much larger army (humans and bots) able to report and bring down anyone while our side cannot marshal the same resources.

Whew. I got all of my major chores done. Clothing and Parka are washed. Hard boiled eggs done. My new bakeware set works nicely (the muffin tin is a little too big on the ends but putting it in the slots on my Breville mini oven does the trick). Now all I have to do is convince Amazon that I got my package. I believe when they read my review of the Chicago Metallic baking set (in the first sentence I state when the package arrived) it should be solved.
