But speaking of Collins’ plea, anybody else notice that all that Repub bravado about how impeachment would be a fatal mistake for the Dems and would just ensure Trump’s reelection are suddenly very reluctant to take any votes unless we drag all this another few months?

I won’t discount the possibility that they think there’s some sort of political strategy to keeping all this going well into next year, but you’d think if impeachment was such a killer to the Dem’s hopes for November, that the Repubs would be champing at the bit to get this all over with so they can spend as much time as possible reminding the country that the Dems impeached Trump.

Impeachment working it ways through right around Christmas would be a sort of 1-2 punch if Trump opts to try to shut down the government as well. Wouldn’t surprise me if he thinks refusing to sign off on another continuing resolution will somehow shut Congress down as well.

Maybe that’s why he’s been assembling his crack non-governmental diplomatic team to cover things in the interim.

An absentee landlord owner of one of the condo units in another building in the community had a leaking toilet valve. The tenant told him about it before vacating the unit but the landlord didn’t do anything about it for some time. Apparently he just learned that he’s around $100K underinsured for damages to both his and his neighbor’s unit.

He’s not happy.

More boomer nostalgia:

Synthetics Plastics Company or SPC of Newark, New Jersey was a plastics manufacturing company that made various items made of plastic including children’s records and budget music albums.

[…] Daniel and Louis Kasen owned several subsidiaries music labels including Ambassador Records, Parade, Prom, Promenade, Pirouette, Guest Star, Power Records and Diplomat Records, whose motto was “Fine records need not be expensive”.

In 1950, the American Music Performance Trust Fund challenged Synthetic for not paying royalties. A spokesman said that Peter Pan records were designed purely for home use and therefore there was no reason to pay contributions to the fund.

[…]

Nothing is more American than exploitation.

Anyway, here is one of their nondescript products, as a memory of Christmas past:

“Over the last three years, the United States has boosted defense spending by more than $139 billion, from $611 billion in 2016 to a near-record $750 billion in 2019. And that was after Trump called the military budget ‘crazy’ in 2018.”

And how much of that increase went to the troops in the form of wages, benefits or housing/recreational facilities?

PSA: it’s 2019. There is no excuse for reporters and editors not to have a professional level of awareness of how readers consume news. If you don’t put pivotal information - like the fact that the $2M was over 30 years - in the headline and tweet, you’re misleading readers.

That is not lack of awareness, that is full awareness and an agenda

Well, I’m thinking Putin’s not gonna like this one damn bit.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has imposed a four-year ban on Russia from all global sport, including the 2020 Olympics and the 2022 World Cup finals.

WADA’s executive committee took the decision after concluding Moscow had tampered with laboratory data.

The agency found Russia planted fake evidence and deleted files linked to positive doping tests that could have helped identify drug cheats.

Russia has 21 days to appeal the decision through the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

UK opinion polls tracker: Tories on course to win with their biggest majority since Thatcher

Understand that the Tories are only in majority relationship with the DUP currently.

If the Tories win enough seats to be an outright majority, then something has gone horribly wrong with the political parties Labour and Liberals.

Note that the Tories can get less than 50% of the national vote but still be a majority in Parliament, for many of the same reasons that Trump won in 2016. The anti-Tory regions are very anti-Tory but they are mostly urban centers. So what if Labour carries certain constituencies by vast majorities, if the Tories take many seats by small margins.

It’s like here in California, where the GOP is now obsolete. Yet no matter how many millions of votes Trump will lose by here in California, if he wins PA and WI and IA by a few hundred votes, Trump will get re-elected.

I know many of us feel skipped over by candidates who don’t visit our areas, but the Democratic party has to concentrate on carrying 5 states in the next election: FL, PA, NC, WI, and IA. Deny Trump those and he can’t be President.

I recall Michael Moore writing an article that I originally dismissed in 2016: all Trump had to do was to carry all the states that Romney carried in 2012 (no problem there) plus PA, MI, WI and OH, and he would have enough electoral votes even without Florida.

And the GOP concentrated their efforts (both legitimate and illegitimate) in those states and won.

Well, the Conservative party has had it’s own disinformation campaign going, full on dog-whistle type, showing that the Tories are becoming for Trump-y than some may have thought:

Would a Labour government mean an extra murder a week?

Claim
A Labour government would mean 52 more murders and 146 more sexual assaults or rapes a year, the equivalent of an additional murder every single week

Background
The Conservative research department, the same body that brought the widely-derided claims that a Labour government would oversee a surge in net migration to 840,000 a year and that Labour’s spending plans would cost £1.2 trillion over five years, has issued findings that it claims show a Labour government would make Britain’s streets less safe.

[…]

It is the same old scare mongering over immigrants used by right-wing populists since forever.

Here it is all about brown people.

In the UK I suspect that the fear of foreigners is spread around Eastern European and North African migrants.

I’ve been cynical of the UK social/political system for some time. Even back a couple of years when the Scottish independence movement was trying to heat up, I was struck by even their lingering reticence to give up on the monarchy.

Sure, you say, the monarchy is just a cultural icon, a sort of living history trust.

But I think the problem is deeper than that.

The unwillingness to let go of past social structures has kept the UK in an odd place. Strikingly, it has been the EU that has saved the UK economically. That is why the Brexiteers have had to lie to push Brexit. But the truth is, the UK has benefited tremendously by the arrangement where the UK hosts services and imports physical goods (made/grown elsewhere in the EU.)

This is where the Japanese, who are in the same boat as far as having too many people for what their land can bear, are far ahead of the Brits. The Japanese know that they live or die based on their import/export relationship. As such, they culture their import/export ties and hold them dear.

If Johnson cuts of migration then the housing market in the UK will suffer, and all those old Brits relying on rental incomes will all of a sudden find their retirement fund wanting.

It’s the entire class system of tiered education, with private schooling for the elite, the Middle Class working their asses off just to pay their mortgages and school tuition, and a working class that is stubbornly proud of being undereducated and underpaid.

There was a bit of piling on around the blogs..why now, why as president but not vice president etc. Is it because he and Hunter “got caught”

Well no. Turns out the very next sentence in the interview (omitted in the reporting) explained it

“They will not be engaged in any foreign business because of what’s happened in this administration,” Biden said. “No one’s going to be seeking patents. … No one’s going to be engaged in that kind of thing.”

The Trumpworld shit show grows larger by the day, and Trump’s even more erratic and desperate by the hour. This is what happens when someone is finally held accountable for their actions for the first time in their lives and he can’t control the outcome despite pushing every lever he has control over to try and obstruct/block the repercussions.

Rudy’s getting ever deeper into the morass, as is Nunes.

No one here should be shocked by any of this.

But I will say, that getting away and catching a bunch of revolutionary war sites, civil rights sites, and historic locations is good for the soul and a good reminder that we need to defend civil and human rights every single day against the efforts by Trumpworld and the GOP to roll back those rights we fought long and hard for.

The WaPo has published a cache of documents that are the equivalent of the Pentagon Papers - showing how 3 administrations lied and misrepresented progress in Afghanistan since 2001.

It shouldn’t be particularly surprising either.

Afghanistan is our generation’s Vietnam.

Nothing we were going to do was going to fix Vietnam - it was something they were going to have to do themselves. And we wrecked the place for a few decades because the “wrong people” were going to do that fixing.

Then we didn’t learn from watching Russia try to tame Afghanistan and fail. In part due to the USA help Pakistan to help the guerrillas fight the Russians as part of the continuing Cold War warm bits by proxy.

So the Russians left and we got sucked in. And our leadership still hasn’t learned that a country has to fix itself - you aren’t going to do it from outside. To a large degree Afghanistan doesn’t want to be a modern nation-state. The various groups want to be left alone to carry out their feuds, and will band together to resist an outside force trying to tell them differently (or a central government based in Kabul). It does leave the issue of what to do to handle international terrorist organizations using the area as a refuge, but the same applies to regions of Pakistan for instance.

That the administrations have lied about a lack of real progress is not a surprise. It’s the standard. A lot of money has been poured into Iraq as well without generating much of an improvement either.

In a democracy, it’s difficult, if not damn near impossible, to tell these noisy cretins to sit down and shut the fuck up.

That being said, I think a good many problems in the world today could be solved by telling authoritarian reactionaries to sit down and shut the fuck up.

I would love to see it reformed, but it would be seen as Big Government encroaching on Academic Freedom, etc., and fought tooth-and-nail.

I would at least like to see us get back to the time when in-state tuition at a State University did not leave a graduate saddled with $50K or more in debt. As I recall, It was way less than $1,000 per year, the sort of thing you could at lest start to pay off with summer jobs and part-time work.

Steve Castor did not seem to care that Trump is a one man crime wave, shredding the Constitution on a daily basis as he continues to operate as he did in private life. We would have been spared all this if the DOJ or local authorities ever made it a priority to go after “wealthy” individuals who violate the laws with impunity.

The levels of wrongness here are so deep. Mr. Trump telling Jews how to feel about Israel? Ann Coulter accusing Jews of disloyalty? You can actually watch the quality of our national discourse spiraling down into the gutter.

We have this Fundamentalist movement that does not care a whit about Jews or Judaism, they just need a resurgent Israel with Jerusalem as its capitol in order to fulfill their apocalyptic End-Times prophecy fantasies.

And this is all wrapped up in the Conservative Canon that we must support any Israeli government that is expansionist and hard-line.

They’ll go along with Trump, because of course they will. Craven cowards to the bitter end. They put party above all else, and have been enabling Trump despite Trump clearly engaging in felony conduct all along.

None of them are openly talking to press on the record of Trump crimes. None are willing to stand up for the rule of law or oaths of office.

None of the GOP will do what’s right - instead lying to everyone about what Trump did on live television - admitting to federal felonies by bribing the Ukranians to look into investigating Bidens as a personal favor to get military aid that was already allocated by Congress. Trump held it up to secure the bribe - the announcement of an investigation into Biden. Trump held it up to help him personally, not for our security or because Trump cared about corruption.

The timeline makes it clear that Trump only sought out the investigation only after Biden entered the race, not before. Trump couldn’t find Ukraine on a map before then (or after, but I digress). Trump doesn’t care about corruption except when it benefits him personally - as it does here. Ukraine wanted no part of Trump’s scheme, but Rudy and Lev and Igor and Sondland and Perry and Pompeo were all in on the effort to get Zelinsky to do it anyways.
