I won’t discount the possibility that they think there’s some sort of political strategy to keeping all this going well into next year, but you’d think if impeachment was such a killer to the Dem’s hopes for November, that the Repubs would be champing at the bit to get this all over with so they can spend as much time as possible reminding the country that the Dems impeached Trump.

Impeachment working it ways through right around Christmas would be a sort of 1-2 punch if Trump opts to try to shut down the government as well. Wouldn’t surprise me if he thinks refusing to sign off on another continuing resolution will somehow shut Congress down as well.

Understand that the Tories are only in majority relationship with the DUP currently.
If the Tories win enough seats to be an outright majority, then something has gone horribly wrong with the political parties Labour and Liberals.
Note that the Tories can get less than 50% of the national vote but still be a majority in Parliament, for many of the same reasons that Trump won in 2016. The anti-Tory regions are very anti-Tory but they are mostly urban centers. So what if Labour carries certain constituencies by vast majorities, if the Tories take many seats by small margins.
It’s like here in California, where the GOP is now obsolete. Yet no matter how many millions of votes Trump will lose by here in California, if he wins PA and WI and IA by a few hundred votes, Trump will get re-elected.
I know many of us feel skipped over by candidates who don’t visit our areas, but the Democratic party has to concentrate on carrying 5 states in the next election: FL, PA, NC, WI, and IA. Deny Trump those and he can’t be President.

I’ve been cynical of the UK social/political system for some time. Even back a couple of years when the Scottish independence movement was trying to heat up, I was struck by even their lingering reticence to give up on the monarchy.
Sure, you say, the monarchy is just a cultural icon, a sort of living history trust.
But I think the problem is deeper than that.
The unwillingness to let go of past social structures has kept the UK in an odd place. Strikingly, it has been the EU that has saved the UK economically. That is why the Brexiteers have had to lie to push Brexit. But the truth is, the UK has benefited tremendously by the arrangement where the UK hosts services and imports physical goods (made/grown elsewhere in the EU.)
This is where the Japanese, who are in the same boat as far as having too many people for what their land can bear, are far ahead of the Brits. The Japanese know that they live or die based on their import/export relationship. As such, they culture their import/export ties and hold them dear.
If Johnson cuts of migration then the housing market in the UK will suffer, and all those old Brits relying on rental incomes will all of a sudden find their retirement fund wanting.

Afghanistan is our generation’s Vietnam.
Nothing we were going to do was going to fix Vietnam - it was something they were going to have to do themselves. And we wrecked the place for a few decades because the “wrong people” were going to do that fixing.
Then we didn’t learn from watching Russia try to tame Afghanistan and fail. In part due to the USA help Pakistan to help the guerrillas fight the Russians as part of the continuing Cold War warm bits by proxy.
So the Russians left and we got sucked in. And our leadership still hasn’t learned that a country has to fix itself - you aren’t going to do it from outside. To a large degree Afghanistan doesn’t want to be a modern nation-state. The various groups want to be left alone to carry out their feuds, and will band together to resist an outside force trying to tell them differently (or a central government based in Kabul). It does leave the issue of what to do to handle international terrorist organizations using the area as a refuge, but the same applies to regions of Pakistan for instance.
That the administrations have lied about a lack of real progress is not a surprise. It’s the standard. A lot of money has been poured into Iraq as well without generating much of an improvement either.
If @RepDougCollins is wondering what lines from this impeachment hearing will be quoted in history, let me assure him that it’ll be the shameless water-carrying from the Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee.

I would at least like to see us get back to the time when in-state tuition at a State University did not leave a graduate saddled with $50K or more in debt. As I recall, It was way less than $1,000 per year, the sort of thing you could at lest start to pay off with summer jobs and part-time work.

Turned on the TV, Steve Castor was speaking, listened to 2 sentences, shut off the TV. None of them are openly talking to press on the record of Trump crimes. None are willing to stand up for the rule of law or oaths of office.
None of the GOP will do what’s right - instead lying to everyone about what Trump did on live television - admitting to federal felonies by bribing the Ukranians to look into investigating Bidens as a personal favor to get military aid that was already allocated by Congress. Trump held it up to secure the bribe - the announcement of an investigation into Biden. Trump held it up to help him personally, not for our security or because Trump cared about corruption.
The timeline makes it clear that Trump only sought out the investigation only after Biden entered the race, not before. Trump couldn’t find Ukraine on a map before then (or after, but I digress). Trump doesn’t care about corruption except when it benefits him personally - as it does here. Ukraine wanted no part of Trump’s scheme, but Rudy and Lev and Igor and Sondland and Perry and Pompeo were all in on the effort to get Zelinsky to do it anyways.
