Nice to know that the media is bending over backwards to believe random GOP politicians about what shit says rather than gov’t officials announcing investigation results that just so happen to contradict GOP narratives.

I always love when a tech help line informs you that they’re “aware” of a “network issue” via a recorded message, more so when they also helpfully tell you that there is no estimated time for the “issue” to be resolved but they will helpfully…change the message if they learn anything new.

Oh, bugger.

The polyclinic of the University Hospital (Ostrava) in Poruba passed a very wild morning. At the trauma surgery clinic a shooting incident was reported. At the moment, the police are intervening.

According to unofficial information, several people are shot. The version differs according to eyewitnesses.

Some say that there was a man shooting on the spot, picking out specific people, and everything looked like an execution scene, someone else claimed that he started shooting randomly and fired at two storage tanks.

Via GoogleTranslate. Original source, in Czech: moravskoslezsky.denik.cz

Ostrava is where I live and this hospital, known locally as FNO (Fakultní Nemocnice Ostrava or University Hospital Ostrava) isn’t all that far from me, just across town.

These are early reports - this all started about less than an hour ago.

re: #30 Dr Lizardo

Update, mind you, an unofficial one.

Shooting was on the 3rd floor of the traumatology department, the shooter is said to be a man. Talking about the dead - according to officially unconfirmed eyewitness information, there are about 4 dead and 10 injured on the spot.

“The situation on the spot is very obscure, we must not go out into the hallway. The doors must be locked, probably to prevent the perpetrator from hiding in a room,” said one of the witnesses on the spot shortly after the shooting.

Basically, shelter in place, active shooter on the hospital grounds.

Quite a haul:
More than 3,000 pounds of marijuana found in U-Haul during traffic stop on I-40

CARSON COUNTY, Texas (KFDA) - A Florida man is in jail after DPS officials say a trooper found more than 3,000 pounds of marijuana inside a U-Haul during a traffic stop on I-40.

On December 5, a DPS trooper stopped a U-Haul traveling east on I-40 for a traffic violation.

According to DPS officials, the trooper then found multiple boxes filled with 3,350 pounds of marijuana in the cargo area.

The driver, 39-year-old Aneudy Gonzalez of Florida, was arrested and charged with felony possession of marijuana. Gonzalez was taken to the Randall County Jail.

Another update: Several dead at shooting at University Hospital Ostrava according to Czech Interior Minister Jan Hamáček.

Shooting in the Ostrava hospital has several victims, confirmed Interior Minister Jan Hamáček (ČSSD).

Police officers intervene on site. At the University Hospital in Ostrava, the shots echoed after seven in the morning.

The Minister said that special police units, including the Rapid Deployment Unit and the Police Helicopter, were intervening on the ground.

According to CTK information, an unknown perpetrator was shooting at one of the outpatient wards.

The suspect in the Ostrava hospital shooting is on the run. Police are looking for a man described only as 180 cm (5’ 9”) tall, wearing a red jacket.

Yeah, that’s not very helpful. That describes about 25% of the male population here.

Well bless your heart Nikki. I know you understand what you’re doing. The confederate flag is meant to honor and revere the Confederacy whose mission was to destroy the United States in order to preserve slavery. It’s that simple. Anything else is false, pandering BS

Until Dylan Root, one could pretty much get away with displaying a Confederate Flag in public without being called out for its inherent racism. Dylan ruined that for all those Good old Boys just celebratin’ they cultchah an’ heyritage.

Quick update on the Ostrava hospital shooting. The Czech police apologized for any earlier confusion….they have the suspect’s name, and the license plate of his car which he apparently used to escape the scene.

They’ve also notified Polish police in the event he tries to flee into Poland…..it’s only a few kilometers away from here as we’re pretty much right on the border.

47
Dr Lizardo  Dec 10, 2019 • 1:16:02am

Looks like the suspect is known to the Czech police; seems he’s had run-ins with the law before. They’ve corrected the suspect photo and added the vehicle and license plate of the car he’s driving - it’s a nationwide APB/BOLO.

re: #50 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

Exactly. The fact that such occurrences here are so rare is why so many people, especially here in Ostrava, are seriously shocked about what just went down. And in Ostrava University Hospital no less, which is well-regarded not only in the region but in the Czech Republic as well for teaching/training medical professionals from not just here in-country but for having trained doctors from the Middle East, the Far East and Africa as well.

52
Dr Lizardo  Dec 10, 2019 • 2:45:35am

According to Czech police, the shooter, identified as Ctirad V., a 42-year-old construction worker from nearby Opava (a few kms away from Ostrava), somehow managed to get his hands on a pistol. He had no firearms license, and as such, the weapon - a 9mm pistol - was in his possession illegally. As per the suspect’s boss, the suspect seems to have taken it into his head that he was seriously ill, and when medical exams at FNO failed to find any illness whatsoever, he began to believe that the staff at FNO was lying to him.

“The argument here is not that the House should include any or every plausible article based on conduct described in Mueller’s report. To the contrary, it would be unwise to be so overbroad. But there is a single, specific article of impeachment that should be included: one describing how the president of the United States obstructed justice by directing White House Counsel Don McGahn to create a false internal record denying that the president had instructed him to have Robert Mueller fired as Special Counsel.”

In 2016, voters older than 40 accounted for nearly three-fifths of all primary voters. It is impossible to win a national election by running a campaign of generational warfare that runs counter to, or directly indicts, a majority of the electorate. One way or another, America’s third party will have to grow up.

Good at arithmetic, The Atlantic is.

Trump’s tweeting up a storm. His executive time is running long today, spewing all manner of lies and nonsense.

Entirely predictable too, because when he gets stressed, he goes to Twitter to lie and project his conduct on his rivals and enemies.

Not a word of any of his tantrums is accurate or factual, but his base and Fox will repeat it endlessly. It’s a goddamned cult, and media outlets repeat it uncritically too.

The Hill is among the worst of the bunch. But established media types also do this by putting their access and contacts above doing hard journalism and fact checking in real time.

The way I like to put it to people that say they were spying on tRump and company.

If the police are on surveillance of a known heroin dealer and filming the comings and goings to build a case against said dealer. And you are a customer of that dealer. They have film of you coming and going, since they don’t know if you are a customer or maybe the main supplier of the product. They have you on film, but you were not the subject of the surveillance but just dealing with the dealer who was the subject of the sting.

tRump and company just happened to be dealing with Russian asset (mob?) characters, and were caught up in the sting.

just to pedant

the committee obtained phone call logs from telephone service providers pursuant to subpoenas

nunes phone number was identified as the other end of some of the calls

no one ‘matched’ it to nunes as collins suggested yesterday
they saw a pattern of calls to a number and then identified it
(metadata phone records are meaningless on their own until you ID who the individual is talking with)

no one obtained nunes’ phone records and still have not

w/r/t to this, the general Fox phenomenon (do do do do do ) and nikki haley’s comments about the flag… this has probably been noted and observed by people smarter and faster than me:

sure haley can get away with those comments right now
in a normal world it would haunt someone who was going to run for prez

clearly it’ll help with ‘the base’

i think we’re kind of at a cusp or transition time - presidentially speaking

there are just enough R’s strategically spread nationwide that they can use the electoral college to advantage - when/if they’re lucky

i think though, that the base is static and likely shrinking. it will soon reach a point where this temporary electoral college sometime advantage disappears

doesnt negate all the damage done or the judiciary etc
nevertheless i see a long term glimmer

This has already happened: what do you think that the Clinton impeachment was about? Cable news keeps on repeating how rare impeachment of a president is — it’s only happened 3 times in the past and now this will be the 4th time. The right approach is to look at most recent 9 presidents (Nixon and his successors) — so this will make it 33%. The Republicans discredited the impeachment process by their persecution of Clinton from the day he took office and the unending investigations parked by Vince Foster’s suicide.

Yep. If they see Trump as a threat to their own power, they’ll jettison him.

Watch and see if there is a motion in the Senate to cast a secret ballot on the articles of impeachment. If that happens, it’s game over!

re: #196 Hecuba’s daughter

This has already happened: what do you think that the Clinton impeachment was about? Cable news keeps on repeating how rare impeachment of a president is — it’s only happened 3 times in the past and now this will be the 4th time. The right approach is to look at most recent 9 presidents (Nixon and his successors) — so this will make it 33%. The Republicans discredited the impeachment process by their persecution of Clinton from the day he took office and the unending investigations parked by Vince Foster’s suicide.

I didn’t say it was without precedent. And yes Republicans certainly did discredit the process when they decided to impeach Bill for perjury over a sexual affair. And that’s something that every Democrat of left leaning pundit needs to point out when Republicans and right wingers cry that this isn’t what the founders intended impeachment for.

What we need to do is establish a permanent majority in the House because it is very likely that 2022 if history plays out will be a year favorable to Republicans if a Democrat is elected President. The thing that pisses me off time and time again thinking about 2010 and I feel guilty about it because 2010 is the only time I didn’t vote (I was really confused how to vote absentee from college) is that so many of the 2008 Obama voters that voted for him and gave him and the Dems their strongest position in years squandered it because they were too impatient and tehy let the stupid Tea Party take the narrative over.

Twitter won’t autoban neo-Nazis because the filters may ban GOP politicians

During an all-hands staff meeting on March 22nd, an employee asked why the company refrains from using its AI to kick white nationalists off the site. After all, Twitter had previously ushered a sweep of bans on accounts pushing Islamic State propaganda. The answer was unsurprising for anyone who’s ever perused Twitter: Content filters created to identify hate speech could potentially result in Republican politicians being banned, an executive explained.

re: #187 makeitstop

It’s a little early to see it right now, but actually laying out the articles of impeachment takes the discussion out of the hypothetical. The shit is real now.

In every Republican senator’s heart resides one basic truth - they’ll defend Trump until the potential for damage to their career gets too close.

Keep their gig, or prop up an asshole who would throw them over the side without a second thought? Geez, tough choice. /

Self-preservation is going to start kicking in, and soon.

another thing that will start to happen soon is the R’s in the house won’t be ‘defending’ trump, deflecting, muddying the waters etc. (in the media sure they will)

but now trump and his team have to actually mount a defense themselves and ‘we should be investigating burisma’ i dont think will cut it as an answer to the actual charges

and that’s partially because as has been testified, if the president wanted to investigate burisma / ukraine corruption, there’s a mechanism for that and all he has to do is say ‘go’

Oh yeah, if we win in 2020, we probably not only have retained the House but expanded it and possibly won the Senate. I just don’t want a let down in 2022. It’s very rare for the President’s party to gain seats in the first midterm election. It’s also not in the Kremlin’s interest for Trump to be seen as popular. Obviously they would prefer they keep their puppet in power but the ideal situation for the Kremlin is Trump again losing the popular vote but winning the EC or if they really want chaos to have Trump win the popular vote but lose the EC. They’re not doing what they do out of a great love for Trump. They’re doing what they do because they want Americans disillusioned with the process and I hate to say it but it’s worked to some extent. Trump has definitely disillusioned me. Not with Democracy itself but with my fellow Americans.

But he doesn’t need 50% of the popular vote — after all Hillary received only 48% of the popular vote, while soundly defeating Trump by almost 3 million votes. He wants to receive a plurality so he can claim that more people supported him than any of the other candidates.

No, he doesn’t need over 50% to win. That’s not what we’re talking about. We’re talking about how his ego needs over 50% of the vote which is a totally different animal. It still bothers him that he lost the popular vote and did not get over 50% of the vote. There’s a reason why he still claims there was voter fraud even though he technically won. He’s definitely got a lot of jealously of Obama for actually winning with over 50% of the vote twice. It’s an ego thing. If Pelosi thought in pure “net political positives” for Democrats, she would never have passed the ACA.

J. Edgar Gay Homophobe is most accurate.

The legend I heard is that J Edgar was a pudding packer. The mob had the goods on him and threatened to reveal it if he leaned on them too hard. J Edgar had to do something to justify his existence, so he became Commie Hunter #1 and let the mob flourish undisturbed.

Which perfectly sums up what America was like in the 50’s and 60’s…

“For all the skill Nancy Pelosi has displayed as a political opposition leader against Trump, the idea that working with him is a net political positive for the Democrats is scorchingly stupid.” —

it wasnt done for a net political gain
it was to protect workers

re: #273 HappyWarrior

I imagine there are few true so con true believers. Even ones we think are like Santorum are frauds.

My gut is that the people who actually run for political office are rarely true believers of any sort. They’ve got ideologies and principles, but I suspect that most are willing/able to compromise on most every issue.

The real true believers can rarely (if ever) get elected.
