Hank Gilbert is a Democrat running against none other than Louis Gohmert.

Hank Gilbert for Congress

Hank is a rancher and former high school Ag teacher.

The Trump-Gohmert tax cuts have exploded the federal deficit while doing almost nothing to grow the economy, and putting the biggest tax breaks in the hands of the wealthiest Americans and billion-dollar corporations while leaving the middle class with only a few extra dollars in their paycheck, but a bigger tax bill and smaller refund when tax day comes.

As a comment from the previous thread, the othering of Jews in college ties to another thing the paleocons have been talking about for at least a couple of decades — the underrepresentation of white gentiles in elite college.

Watch them try to get more racial stats including the proportions of Jews in elite colleges, “to make sure Jews aren’t getting persecuted by the leftist Social Justice Warriors, of course”.

Yeah, no way this has unexpected consequences of anything. I’m sure that, given the professionalism and thoughtfulness of the whole Trump Administration, they’ve considered everything carefully before taking such actions.

Rudy tells @jdawsey1 that SDNY probe is “most unfair, vindictive investigation they have ever conducted.”

He better be careful. Trump won’t like hearing Rudy thinks he’s treated more unfairly.

Good luck to him. I know the odds are against him but anyone who runs against an incumbent Republican on the Democratic line no matter the odds is doing democracy a service.

When exactly was the NYT like a “leaflet you get at a grocery store?” According to the fat fuck, it only got thick after he started running. What an asshole.

Idea: let’s compile a list of media folks who take Mitt Romney’s declaration of an “open mind” regarding impeachment seriously so we know who we never ever have to pay attention to ever again.

No point in putting Chris Cillizza on the list, of course. Nobody with significant brainwave activity pays attention to him as it is.

re: #26 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

I used mineral oil for a certain pet cat, but…

From the ‘inter-web’:

If you unintentionally trap a small animal that you didn’t intend to trap such as a lizard or snake, it can usually be released from the trap in the same manner. The nature of glue traps is that the more an animal struggles, the more stuck it becomes, so try to keep the animal calm, and keep it from sticking its nose in the glue.

Wear heavy gloves to avoid bites. Pour cooking oil on the trap glue at the points where the animal is caught and massage the animal’s skin or fur to work the oil into the glue. You may need to use a lot of oil (but don’t drown the poor animal!) so do this where spilled oil won’t be a problem. It will take a few minutes for the oil massage to work. Once the animal is free, give it a soapy bath to remove the oil (if it’s your pet) or take it to a veterinarian for follow-up care.

I love Connie Schultz. My favorite story, told to me by a Dem friend who was there, happened at a party where Connie and Sherrod were in attendance. Somebody (who obviously didn’t know who was who) was talking to Connie and made some remark about Sherrod’s voice not being very pleasing, to which Connie, straight-faced, said, “Well, it’s pretty pleasing when it’s coming from the pillow next to mine” (paraphrasing)

It is sad that unintended consequences can be that way.

If it is any consolation, there are lots of videos on youtube where kind people successfully release a trapped small animal. But within a few seconds there are unintended but devastating consequences (to the just freed animal). Nature can be cruel in that way.

More details about the Jersey City mass shooting. Apparently, it began as investigation into a murder in neighboring Bayonne NJ. Plainclothes officers approached a vehicle linked to the homicide and the occupants opened fire.

That led to the wild scene and running gun battle before ending in the Jewish supermarket.

4 dead, including a cop. The two perps are also dead.

Fuck Trump and Fuck the GOP.

If Trump thinks this is going to gain him a single Jewish vote, he’s sorely mistaken. This will do him and the GOP even more damage - entirely deserved.

Trump is enabling even more anti-Semitic attacks against Jews because he’s spurring on the very anti-Semitic dual loyalties tropes that have long been used to attack Jews as the “other”.

Yes, there will be lawsuits to overturn yet another unconstitutional and illegal act by Trump. This violates the Establishment Clause, not that Trump gives a shit about the constitution or the rule of law. He just does whatever he thinks he can profit from and doesn’t care about the consequences.

Fuck Trump and Fuck the GOP that continues enabling him.

That is all.

Between the day he took office and to date, the Dow Jones has risen by 41% — so indeed some of those numbers are definitely possible, especially if the balance includes additional contributions. Of course, there’s no reason to believe any truth to his particular anecdote but indeed these changes are possible over a three year period, especially for more aggressive investment strategies..

Remember that the original readout of Trump’s April 21st call included references to Trump’s commitment to “root[ing] out corruption” and to U.S. support for Ukraine’s “territorial integrity.”; the summary of the same call, released on November 15th, bore no such language.

The readout of this conversation probably summarizes what the staff told him to say and has nothing to do with the actual discussion.

A month and a half ago this happened:

The community of inspectors general across the federal government’s agencies and departments, through the Inspectors General Council, wrote a letter to the Justice Department Friday pushing back against the determination that the whistleblower complaint that launched the against President Trump was not an “urgent concern.” The council is an independent entity within the executive branch.

In August, the inspector general for the intelligence community determined that the whistleblower complaint about Mr. Trump’s July 25 call with the Ukrainian president was credible and an “urgent concern” that should be shared with Congress.

However, the Office of Legal Counsel in the Justice Department decided that the complaint did not constitute an “urgent concern,” arguing that the president is not a part of the national security community. The whistleblower’s complaint was not disseminated to Congress until September, after the White House released a memo summarizing the call. The inspectors general expressed concern about what might be seen as second-guessing whistleblowers.

“If intelligence community employees and contractors believe that independent IG determinations may be second guessed, effectively blocking the transmission of their concerns to Congress and raising questions about the protections afforded to them, they will lose confidence in this important reporting channel and their willingness to come forward with information will be chilled,” the letter from the inspectors general said.

So how long do you think until the IGs collectively weigh in on Barr and Durham’s openly seditious undermining of Horowitz’s truly independent investigation and report?

Horowitz reportedly asked Durham point blank if he had any proof of a conspiracy and Durham admitted he did not. So now, put yourself in Durham’s shoes, you’re out here in a position where you can’t put up and Barr and Trump just won’t shut up. You just got roped into a wacky adventure, promises were made, the cocaine was probably really good *you can’t remember* and the point is now this Horowitz guy is fucking up your good time with your new powerful crime pals. You’d talk shit about him too.

I read that Independent article….and I agree that it’s no longer merely a case of Trump lying, as that’s the norm for him, but that he’s becoming outright delusional as his ego crumbles.

That bit in the article about “shared psychosis” reminds me of a theme William Shirer alluded to in “The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”, namely that he noticed during his time in Nazi Germany how the Nazi ideology seemed to be spreading like a virus, infecting otherwise normal and seemingly rational people.

Trumpism seems to be the same sort of virus, a mental contagion that has spread to a sizable segment of the American population. Trump, like Hitler before him, seems to excel at drawing people into his delusions.

Shirer called Hitler’s Weltanschauung a “grotesque hodgepodge concocted by a half-baked, uneducated neurotic”. He could just as easily have been speaking about Trump and his insane ideas.

My impression so far is that Horowitz’s report is being received much in the way that Comey’s was after that infamous July presser. He produced a report that was much like Comey’s conclusions: A lot of mistakes were made, some bad calls were not caught, and there’re guys who should be pilloried for their actions. But not only did he stomp flat the idea that political bias was involved, he immolated that idea and then salted the earth around it.

My expectation is that today’s hearing (Dec 11th) will go much like Comey’s did after that presser: Senate Dems will look for him to expand upon his findings and reinforce the idea that the Russian Investigation was on the level, while Senate Repubs will suggest that he’s just another career guy who doesn’t like Trump and that’s why he didn’t deliver the report they were expecting.

Yale Historian Timothy Snyder pointed out:

“What we know is that people who oppose democratic republics do so by taking very different attitudes toward facts and factuality. Fascists tended to say that the whole enlightenment was a mistake, that you needed new forms of irrational politics, such as the idea that nation was made up of a mystical union with a mystical connection to the leader.”

“The lying is programmatic. It is designed to create the conditions for alternative realities and to train minds to follow changing lines rather than evaluate facts.”

Historian Timothy Snyder: Trump’s lies are creeping tyranny
vox.com

A few examples I have seen:

“We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors … and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”
- Karl Rove

“Alternative Facts”
- Kellyanne Conway

It seems to me that we have been on this path for a while.

Meanwhile, the oligarch clown car rumbles along in the Czech Republic:

The company Home Credit owned by Czech tycoon Petr Kellner has financed a for pro-Chinese campaign in the Czech Republic. euractiv.cz reports.

According to Aktuálně.cz, media partner of euractiv.cz, a PR agency hired by Home Credit, a loan company, has created a network of politicians, experts but also journalists that were supposed to influence the Czech society in favour of China. Aktuálně.cz reported that not all the people involved were aware of the fact that they were part of this pro-Chinese network.

Documents show that Home Credit hired the PR agency C&B Reputation Management to spread positive information about China. Its task was also to attack critics of the Chinese regime.

The scandal involves Czech news server Info . cz, whose executive director Tomáš Jirsa is the major owner of the C&B Reputation Management. Jirsa resigned from his post in Info(.)cz just a few hours after Aktuálně.cz published the report. Info . cz was launched in 2016 and names itself as a “conservative portal”.

Has anyone tried “If Judaism is a nationality then why isn’t Christianity?” yet?

electoral-vote.com this AM

Actually, it’s more like an attempt to do an end run around the law. If Congress really wants to prohibit discrimination against Jews and other religious groups, they can easily pass an updated law. Further, the new policy is rooted in two rather dubious assumptions: (1) that anti-Israel activism is inherently anti-Jewish, and (2) that Jews can properly be considered a national group. Are all Roman Catholics citizens of the Vatican? Are all Muslims citizens of Saudi Arabia? One imagines that this is going to be challenged in court by the ACLU, and that it won’t take a judge very long to make a decision.

…Of course, by declaring Judaism to be a nationality, he has just sanctioned one of the most notorious anti-Semitic stereotypes of them all, namely that Jews have loyalty to multiple nations. Does anyone in the White House think about the implications of their actions before they take them? It does not appear so. (Z)

The reasons for the latest EO are clear: we have Fundamentalist Christians who do not give a fuck about Jews or Judaism, but need to see a strong, resurgent Israel in order to fulfill their apocalyptic End-Times prophecies and kick-start Armageddon.

The EO is there to make it impossible for universities and other institutions to boycott Israel by equating Israel to Judaism.

The logical conclusion of all this is to declare that all Jews are Zionists, all Catholics are Vatican Papists, or all Muslims are Islamists.

But Trump does not think these things through.

That’s something I expect to come up in today’s hearing, the reality that Horowitz has known and sat on the info for months that there was a strong anti-Clinton bias in the FBI. That it was concentrated in the very FBI office that “found” the emails that forced Comey’s letter announcing the investigation “reopened” just days before the election.

Greets and saluts from the snowy NYC metro area.

As we long know here at LGF, the problem isn’t merely Trump. It goes to the moral and ethical rot of the entire GOP apparatus. They have put party above nation. They put their power above all else, and consider this a zero sum engagement. They win by everyone else losing.

They don’t care the damage they’re doing to the institutions of government. They want to damage the administrative state - they want it gone, and they’re putting judges on the bench to do just that. This would hobble functioning government, which would again give them the excuse to cut funding and deliver still more tax cuts for the millionaire class.

They back Trump’s corrupt and criminal enterprise, because he’s allowing them to do so much damage while taking the heat for them. They can pack the courts with unqualified right wing extremists and block election security, gun control, and voting rights legislation. Heck, they can even block NAFTA 2.0 indefinitely after caterwauling for months that Democrats were the ones holding things up.

NAFTA 2.0 (aka USMCA) is a marketing bit by Trump to claim a completely new deal when it’s functionally an addendum and minor modifications to an existing deal. Trump’s economic and trade policies have done more harm than good to the US, and we see manufacturing slow down in the US thanks to the idiotic trade war. Businesses are trying to compensate by shifting purchases and relying on Trump is a fools’ errand. So everyone limps along and the economic growth is despite Trump, not because of him.

Meanwhile, businesses continue to suffer. Farm bankruptcies continue to rise. Trump continues to lie and the GOP lies with him - all amplified by Fox and the right wing echo chamber.

None of this bodes well, when media outlets regurgitate Trump statements uncritically. Again, this isn’t anything new to us here, but it needs to be stated all the same.

Jersey City Shooting: Suspect Published Anti-Semitic Posts, Official Says

The firefight that left six people dead is believed to have been motivated by anti-Semitic and anti-police sentiments, an official said.
A suspect involved in a prolonged firefight in Jersey City, N.J., that left six people dead, including one police officer, had published anti-Semitic and anti-police posts online and investigators believe the attack was motivated by those sentiments, a law enforcement official familiar with the case said on Wednesday.

The Jersey City mayor said surveillance footage indicated that the two shooters had targeted a kosher supermarket where most of the carnage unfolded.

On Twitter Wednesday, Mayor Steven Fulop wrote that an “extensive review” of the city’s closed-circuit cameras made it clear “that these two individuals targeted the kosher grocery location” where they opened fire and sparked a gun battle with police officers.

The deceased shooters have still not been identified publicly.
If they’re Muslims, Trump will be ecstatic. If he can declare Judaism a nationality, with the solemn assent of his stooges and the moron base, he can easily declare Islam a political ideology or something similar and start to remove 1st Amendment protections for American Muslims.
If they are white supremacists, it will be thoughts, prayers, and business as usual for bloody-handed Wayne LaPierre and the murder lobby.

Fuck Republicans, part 4782:

The Hill - Senate Republicans are weighing a speedy impeachment trial that could include no witnesses for President Trump’s legal team or for House Democrats.

The discussions come as the House is moving forward with articles of impeachment against Trump, teeing up a trial in the Senate that would start in January.

The White House has indicated publicly that it has a wish list of potential witnesses, including House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Hunter Biden and the whistleblower who sparked the impeachment inquiry.

But Republican senators, including Trump allies and members of leadership, appear reluctant to drag themselves through a drawn-out trial with messy procedural votes when the outcome appears pre-baked.

“I think a protracted period where there are motions to call witnesses offered by both sides and lots of votes … is not going to be terribly popular with either side. I think there’s going to be a desire to wrap this up in at least somewhat of a timely way,” Sen. John Thune (S.D.), the No. 2 Republican senator, told reporters.

He added that while a final decision won’t be made until closer to the trial, “there’s going to be a lot of people who I think are going to say, ‘I don’t really want to drag this on.’”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) asked about the possibility of a Senate trial where neither side got witnesses, replied: “I hope so. That’s what I like.”

Pressed on the White House wanting to call individuals like Schiff, he noted that Democrats could, in turn, call Vice President Pence or Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“I want to end this thing as quickly as possible,” Graham added.

OK this is fucking infuriating:

theatlantic.com

Americans ought to be upset at the officials responsible for this historic debacle and everyone complicit in hiding the truth about it from the citizenry. As John Sopko, the special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction, told the Post, “The American people have constantly been lied to.” All who lied deserve public censure.

But those responsible for the war in Afghanistan aren’t just the U.S. officials who presided over the war effort or the Congress that approved it by overwhelming margins. Most Americans favored war in an unfamiliar country, knowing that the authorization to use force was expansive, that what victory entailed was never defined, that the U.S. government has lied to the public frequently during past conflicts, and that the Vietnam War lasted years longer than most anticipated when the fighting there began.

It is tempting to blame Washington elites, or the deep state, or the military-industrial complex for America’s misbegotten Afghanistan policy. And I, among others, have been critical of all those forces. But as a 21-year-old who favored the Afghan War when it began, I was among the majority who believed that the anti-war leftists of 2001 were wrong in their dire warnings of quagmire. So I am painfully aware that the American masses, almost the entire populist right, the center-left, and Bush-era elites joined forces in supporting the war in Afghanistan, while a tiny faction of anti-capitalists, paleoconservatives, and libertarians opposed it.

…and I believe Trump’s EO is nothing more than a naked attempt to equate the dominant Jewish monetary support of liberal causes, institutions, and political parties to a foreign nation in violation of law- or least the implications.

…and I believe Trump’s EO is nothing more than a naked attempt to equate the dominant Jewish monetary support of liberal causes, institutions, and political parties to a foreign nation in violation of law- or least the implications.

It has a lot to do with allowing the government to withhold funds from Universities and institutions that pursue an anti-Israel investment policy.

Conservatives, especially the Fundamentalist Christians, want to see a strong, resurgent Israel with Jerusalem as its Capitol.

Although it ought to be possible to oppose the policies of the Israeli government and not be Anti-Semitic, this EO basically equates the two.

And it is not Kosher.

Yeah I didn’t mention converts. That’s the problem with this EO. It equates American Judaism with Israel. Here’s an interesting seasonal tie-in: It’s generally accepted that the Virgin Mary was somewhere between 12 and 15 years old when she gave birth to Jesus. That’s roughly the same age as Greta is now.

So on the one hand they have no problem literally venerating one teen girl for having the maturity, poise and strength to handle being the mother of the Son of God, but another teen girl with similar traits who is also involved in making a major impact on the world is demonized as being merely a naive child who doesn’t know any better and is merely following the orders of manipulative adults.

re: #342 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

I dunno: I’m not sure this is all that great an idea, but it’s not a completely stupid one, either.

For one thing, it takes a lot of the “age” issue off the table: if elected next year, Joe Biden would be 78 when first sworn in, 82 after the 2024 election: experience is a useful thing in politics, Party gerontocracy is another.

Also: as important as the personalities of national political figures are (way TOO important, IMO, but that’s another rant) - I think that repairing the damage of the Trump Era is going to require an across-the-board effort by the Democrats nationwide, and at every (Local, State and Federal) level. If a President Biden gets sworn in with, say, an “anointed preferred successor”as VP - with the implied proviso that said Veep will be the 2024 candidate: I think it *might* help to overcome some doubts among the swing electorate (who, despite some opinions, I think DO exist).

Maybe.

I wouldn’t hate the idea if it wasn’t completely apparent that the majority of the electorate has the memory of a gold fish. So Biden comes in, does some triage and gets things towards the right track. Dems get rewarded by getting smacked in 2024. Because it’s not like the GOP is suddenly regaining some sanity.

Also, it puts Biden in the same position as Bush the Elder and his no new taxes pledge. If something comes up that would make is very necessary for Biden to run again, and he has to renege on the pledge, it could look bad and unfortunately, it could turn off some folks.
