I’ve listened to all the hearings up to now (with a few glitches), but I just can’t handle this one. Of course I knew that the Republican Party is traitors all the way down, but having to hear it confirmed over and over again is depressing.

Saw this on another forum. Comment by someone who was serving the in the military in the applicable period about the Afghanistan report.

I’ll illuminate my perspective like this. At the battalion and below perspective the mission was always the same and the arguements among strategic leaders about whether the goal was to stabilize Afghanistan, establish women’s rights or counter Pakistani influence didn’t matter. The only thing that changed was the resources we had. Our job was to secure a valley (speaking very broadly here) and my leaders understood that the best way to do that was to treat each village as its own country. Some already liked us, some hated us, some needed the carrot and others the stick. None of them where black or white(not talking about race)and those who appeared to be one might be opposite tomorrow.
To achieve security you needed to give each village stability and fulfill its need. For A that might be schools and wells, for B that might be freedom to follow strict religious teachings. For B building a school would run against their beliefs and alienate the population and elders, so we wouldn’t build a school there even if tasked too. The well; while making daily life easier, would mean the women never left the village to fetch water and you would miss a key opportunity to engage with them through a FET or their discussions with females from other villages. So A was easy and B would require more oversight. You’d cut a deal with the elder of B saying “hey, don’t let the Taliban in and we will let you do whatever you want.” Then you monitor the fuck out of that village and the second a Talib stayed there longer than a day or two you swoop in, blow up the hosts shit shed, accidentally break a dam in his field or some other non-lethal punishment that makes his life harder. But you never restrict his ability to express his religious beliefs. The Talib tells him that is America’s goal, to destroy his Islam so you can never give them ammunition proving that. Eventually the town sees that the Taliban (cough cough Pakistan) is our true foe and while he won’t oppose them he also won’t support them; which is all you needed to get stability. And shit if you are feeling super generous you can use some engineer assets to help village B build or fix their mosque which will blow their fucking minds and completely shatter the Talibs propaganda.

Tomorrow I go in for a battery of body exams. Difficulty: I have to drive through (not just into, THROUGH) the downtown metro area, and we’re projected to get an inch or two of snow during that exact window. I have a feeling tomorrow’s going to be a “leave extra early and find something to do if I make better time” day.

And if they aren’t true believers but speak as though they are? Isn’t the effect the same? The GOP base are true believers — and these speeches continue to poison the mind of the population. Whether the words are spoken out of cynicism (such as Cruz) or fanaticism - the Republican audience will accept them as truth, instead of being forced to accept reality. If your respected leaders are spouting lies, you may have no reason to reject their contentions — and this way lies the end of the American experiment in self-rule.

Nope. You’re talking two different things. A SCRAM is an emergency shut down of a reactor by fully inserting all the control rods at once. It can be restarted again by withdrawing the control rods. You POISON a reactor by pumping it full of boron. :-)

re: #60 Dread Pirate

I have a few questions around this new memo. When was it written? It would appear that Trumpworld continually tries to retcon events to match whatever Trump is spewing at any given moment, but a document has time stamps and the electronic document would show when it was created, altered, etc.

If this was done after the aid was already withheld, it’s another sign of obstruction of justice and shows that Trump doesn’t care about facts, rule of law, or anything other than his own power.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area.

The tangerine toddler is already triggered this morning. Impeachment and not being Time Person of the Year will do that to a raging nutjob with a microphone.

He’s lashing out at Greta.

He’s calling this the lightest impeachment (kinda like calling someone somewhat pregnant) - you are either impeached or not. And Trump is being impeached.

The Ukrainians had their land taken from them by a bullying neighbor. I spent some time last summer in Northeastern Slovakia since I was visiting family that still lives there. This part of Slovakia borders Poland and Ukraine. Family legend even says that my mom’s maternal grandfather went to work in Siberia at a young age. The World Wars and Soviet times really impacted this region. It is a pro-democracy and pro-western region. I don’t know what Putin’s ambitions are beyond Crimea but he’s definitely trying to expand Russia influence by bullying pro-western and democratic neighbors. And hell until 2016 officially even the GOP got that. They saw that Ukraine was an important partner. Trump and his guys didn’t care that Ukraine is in a difficult situation and they attempted to pressure a new President to do their dirty work. And the GOP reps like Collins don’t care because their base doesn’t care because their base is completely a okay with Trump’s disdain for allies and yes democracy itself.

22 years ago, an action movie starring Harrison Ford was released. It was called Air Force One.

The story was about some Russians who take the President of the United States hostage to try and re-establish (in a very bloody fashion) the old Soviet Union.

Now of course in the movie, the American President ultimately tells the Russians to fuck off and kicks all their asses, but the other parallels are interesting.

I think it depends. I think he’s fine with Belarus being a satellite of Russia’s since Lukashenko plays ball with him. I think he really would prefer that Ukraine have someone like Yanukovych in charge to have the same effect. I don’t see Putin as an irrational actor. And I don’t think most analysts do either. However, his interests are definitely at odds with ours and that’s something that the right since Trump became the defacto leader of the GOP hasn’t acknowledged.

electoral-vote.com has been doing a series on historical political scandals.

“Today, it’s the scandal that gave scandals a bad name. Get comfortable, because there’s no quick and easy way to tell this particular story.” Watergate

It’s a good read, with a few sections of tongue slightly in cheek because they are eerily appropriate as the more things change, the more they stay the same:

Yes, we know. It’s hard to imagine Republican politicians launching a full-out assault on someone who is a veteran and a dedicated public servant with a spotless record, just to cover for the bad behavior of a Republican president. But it happened!

We know, it’s hard to imagine a president implying that pardons will be given to anyone who breaks the law on his behalf. But it happened!

We know, you wouldn’t think a president and his underlings would so brazenly trample on campaign finance laws. But it happened!

Yes, we know it’s hard to imagine a White House Press Secretary knowingly lying through their teeth to obscure the president’s shady behavior. But it happened!

Yes, we know, it’s difficult to imagine the attorney general acting as a hatchet man for the president. But it happened!

here is their summing up:

The presidents who came after Nixon, for their part, learned a very valuable lesson from Watergate: whatever you do in the White House, make damn sure it’s not recorded. The American people learned a lesson (which they had already begun to grasp during the Vietnam War): presidents can’t always be trusted. Meanwhile, the media, and politicians of all stripes, also learned something: Scandal sells. If you want to motivate voters, sell newspapers, attract eyeballs to television sets, or (later) generate clicks, a juicy scandal will do that more effectively than a boring old policy discussion

Even Nixon wasn’t this pathetic.

oh sure he was. from today’s electoral-vote.com re watergate:

In addition, Nixon saw things in very black and white terms. If you were with him, fine. If you were against him, however, you were an enemy out to destroy him. And the only way to cope with an enemy like that is to destroy them first. It’s hard to say who he despised more: the media or liberal political activists, but he definitely hated them both, and both were well-represented on his infamous enemies list. Nixon’s much more expansive political opponents list gives a more fine-grained picture of the folks he particularly disliked: liberal members of Congress, black members of Congress, civil rights activists, progressive activists, students, professors, Jews, labor leaders, artists and performers who dared criticize him, business leaders who dared criticize him, and pretty much every prominent newspaper and reporter in the country.

Finally, Nixon could never leave “well enough” alone. As a byproduct of his insecurity, he could never accept when a fight was won, when an election was in the bag, or when a problem had been sufficiently addressed. And so, he was prone to pile on, even when doing so was no longer necessary or productive. That is an approach to life that can sometimes backfire, something that Nixon—though possessing genius-level intellect—never seemed to figure out.

This is why it’s no longer up to the bruised and/or bleeding wife to decide if her husband should be arrested for domestic violence.

If the neighbors called in ‘cause they heard something, and the responding officer thinks it looks like something, it don’t matter that the wife says “no no, just a misunderstanding”. That guy’s getting his mugshot taken and his name in the logbook.

If there’s nobody willing to testify… that happens sometimes. But there’ll be a record of how many times cops got called to that house, and interview notes with the refusing-to-testify wife. So when she turns up dead, nobody can claim it’s a first offense.

And they have presented no evidence to support that.

And what if Joe did pull strings?

Would the GOP really have us believe that they would object to DJT doing that?

this cant possibly be good

“Meanwhile, federal prosecutors charged yesterday evening that Lev Parnas, an associate of President Trump who represented him in Ukraine, was wired $1 million from a Russian bank account weeks before his arrest. Which is to say, Trump’s Ukraine plot appears to have been financed by Russia…”

“Rudy has worked as Trump’s lawyer for ‘free,’ but Parnas paid him half a million dollars for his work. If Parnas himself was being paid by Russian sources, this means the Russians were essentially subsidizing Trump, paying for the work themselves so he didn’t have to lay out a dime of his own money.”

There’s an actual Law School hypothetical on point:

“If a guy jumped off the roof of your building, and as he’s falling past your window you shoot him… is that murder?”

that’s not where theyre going (imo)

they’re trying to ‘build a post hoc case’ that it was entirely appropriate for trump to hold up the aid and ask zelinsky for an investigation into both the bidens and burisma

neverminding official channels, or corruption in general ad nauseum

If you think your opponent broke laws here or abroad you don’t send your personal attorney. We have an FBI for that.

But if you’re just looking to smear an opponent than you send your personal lawyer who isn’t in jail yet.

And again, Dems should be asking aloud why Trump chose to use his personal enforcer to investigate the Bidens if there is plentiful evidence of criminal acts on their part. Why would he not task his AG and the DOJ to cooperate with their counterparts in Ukraine to look into the Bidens? The answer’s simple: He didn’t want his fingerprints on this, he wanted it to seem like a spontaneous act on the part of the new Ukrainian gov’t.

If he makes a formal request, it’s obvious what he’s doing and what his motivations are. But if he gets Zelensky to make the announcement, then he can claim that there must be something these because the Ukrainians started the investigation unasked and we all know Zelensky is above being corrupted.

Thanks, that Politico article was a good overview of Trump’s early ties with USSR/Russia. The bottom line is that Putin has 30+ years of information on Trump. Given what Trump is willing to do in public, I don’t have a depraved enough imagination to speculate what he got up to in private over the years.
