WATCH LIVE: Trump Impeachment Inquiry: House Judiciary Committee Debates Articles of Impeachment

The House continues markup of the Trump impeachment articles, which began Wednesday at 7 p.m. Eastern. House Democrats unveiled two articles of impeachment against the president and will hold a final vote sometime before Christmas. The Post’s Libby Casey will be joined by reporters Elise Viebeck, Colby Itkowitz and Rhonda Colvin.

Trump is just the fourth president in U.S. history to face impeachment, which could be approved by next week on the House floor. At the center of the Democrats’ case is that Trump sought to withhold military assistance and an Oval Office meeting until Ukraine announced investigations into former vice president Joe Biden and his son. I still think the Tories are gonna win, hate to say it. But if there’s a surge in Labour voters, and especially if Brexit opponents engage in some tactical voting, there’s a distinct possibility that the election could return a hung parliament……which would be an utter fiasco for the Tories.

The purpose of the INF was to avoid the increased risk of war simply due to the reality that intermediate-range missiles only really work if they’re parked right on your enemy’s doorstep. That was the reason Reagan negotiated that treaty, because the deployments of such missiles were not only controversial, but the local governments were afraid that they would be the first target of retaliation if the US should choose to launch a nuclear strike using such weapons.

Bales is currently serving a life sentence without parole in the military prison at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas after he pleaded guilty to killing 16 Afghans, while on deployment in the Panjwai district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan on March 11, 2012. The act has been called one of the worst atrocities of the war.

On that night, Bales left his forward operating base alone and killed four Afghans, including a 3-year-old girl, he told a reporter in 2015. He returned to his FOB for more ammunition and left again to kill 12 more people in another nearby village. The victims were men, women and mostly children.

Motherfucker.

It occurred to me yesterday that the GOP’s entire “defense” of Trump could be summed up in two words: “So what?”

So what if Trump tried to extort Zelensky? He got his money, so he should be grateful!

So what if Trump tried to corrupt the election? Ukrainians once said mean things about him, so he’s just getting even!

So what if every career diplomat thinks what he did was wrong? We hate career folks, as does our base, so they need to step the fuck off!

So what if all these law professors say his actions were impeachable? They hate him, so their opinion doesn’t count!

So what if we’re setting a bad precedent by giving him a pass? They’re setting a worse precedent by demanding he be held accountable for his actions!

One thing that should be pointed out by Dems is that statement by Zelensky about feeling pressure came after the aid was released. It’s like asking someone who’s found out they were the victim of a scam artist if they felt they were being scammed at the time. If Zelensky admits he felt pressured, then it not only opens him to retaliation by Trump, but it totally undermines his presidency because his people will ask uncomfortable questions about whether this “incorruptible” new president was willing to go along with corrupt acts.

I wonder if Greta’s father is still living? I wonder how a father would like 70 something old “leader” attacking his teenage daughter? Would love to see the father, or mother, totally go off on the mf.

jumping in the thread late and no i havent read it yet

just want to keep reminding everyone the R’s in the house are making arguments, rationalizations, excuses, explanations, etc that are all post hoc / after the fact

NONE of this is what trump et al were thinking at the time

these are excuses they’re making up now to get away with what he did then.

want ‘proof’?
i am more than willing to use the house R’s own argument: if the administration has one document or one single witness to back any of this up - what trump was thinking at the time, why the aid was held up - then present it

otherwise it’s a bunch of congresspeople spewing theories with zero witnesses and zero testimony and zero documentation

If anyone thinks that what I and the science are saying is advocating for a political view - then that says more about that person than about me.
That being said - some are certainly failing more than others.

Politics is the exercise of non-military power. Fighting climate change will require the exercise of a great deal of power. It is the world’s greatest collective action problem and solving it hurts a lot of powerful people. It is political.

There is a fight scene that I think is one of the best ever filmed, and you get a sense of how a woman who is actually professionally trained would fight for real when dealing with men who have superior upper body strength. (hint: don’t fight fair and don’t stand and trade punches)

I was thinking about that while watching “The Irishman”, when Russsell is telling Jimmy Hoffa that if he didn’t give up his run for the Teamsters’ leadership they’d kill him:

“You know I got no problem with you, right? But the higher ups, the wanted me to tell you, it’s what it is.”

Not, “We’re gonna kill you”. Just “It’s what it is.”

And another time, Hoffa says “We’re gonna have to do something about him”, and Sheeran gives him a glance, and he clarifies, “No, not THAT.”

Or just how Sheeran is introduced, “I hear you paint houses”, meaning you kill people.

FWIW, the Fox propaganda shows are now doing over 4M viewers in their better nights.

What does this mean?

It’s hard to parse viewership data, but the increased viewership of the Fox News regular shows during this middle-end stage of the impeachment hearings tells me that there is interest.

But it also suggests to me that the Trumper base is looking for words to use as excuses, and Hannity, Ingraham, etc. are there to give the Trumpers the words to use keep excusing Trump’s crimes.

The actual impeachment arguments are far too complex for a viewer to come in cold to the entire process, and have any clue as to what is going on.

Lots of diehard tweeters put out little bits that are supposed to be important, but to someone who isn’t following these things these little bits have no meaning.

Example:

re: #186 Dangerman (misuser of the sarc tag)

I bet most Americans would have no clue what this is supposed to mean. “Burisma” without an explanation as to why anyone should care about that (is it a new brand of beer? a new disease? a new brand of paper towels?) “Burisma”.

This is why the likes of GOHMERT! put on the shows that they do: they know most Americans either don’t care or are not following close enough to follow the actual legal/moral/governmental issues.

Yeah, you can argue that the state-based electoral college system is good and that the president shouldn’t be elected by popular vote, but you can’t then simultaneously argue that a victory in the EC is tantamount to an expression of the popular will.

I mean you can simultaneously argue both contradictory things but you’d be a partisan hack to do so.

Rep Nadler just made a good point, that I personally had not yet heard: that going to court to request adjudication of the request for documents and testimony from White House personnel and departments would perhaps be fine if the President had stated a privilege for his refusal. Instead, he had issued a blanket refusal to accept that Congress had any right to question him at all. Rep Biggs (I think it was) just sat there with his mouth hanging open, and did not respond. Bravo.

I’m firm believer that World Leaders, who conduct telephone conversations with each other very frequently, always record the calls. They would have to so they are able go back and review exactly what was said or agreed upon.

Somewhere in the super secret server is an actual recording of the questionable calls. I’m also sure Ukraine (and probably several other countries) have copies of these calls.

Time for the Intelligence Committees to get access to these servers, as is their right to do so.

He stays in power in a fashion that Bernie absolutely dreams of: He provides a huge party dues discount to college students, while the very working folks that the party claims to stand for have to pay full freight. The situation created is one where Corbyn has a solid core of supporters, while anybody who might challenge him has to hope enough people bothered to pay dues this year to vote for them in a leadership challenge.

re: #257 Barefoot Grin

re: #258 Barefoot Grin

No expert on British politics (and will gratefully accept clarification), but the general take seems to be that Labour had no choice: that Jeremy Corbyn rose his Leadership position in the time-honored leftist manner (by slowly infiltrating loyalist cadres into positions of power in the Party) - and that the loyalists were going to stick with him and his positions come hell or high water. Both of which they got: as while Corbyn’s political stance (basically, as I’ve always seen it, a bold and vigorous return to 1976) was a big winner on the Left, it seems to have left the rest of the electorate unimpressed. I know it’s a facile excuse to blame an electoral defeat solely on bad “leadership” - but in this case, there’s not much else to go on: the Tories had (at least by most opinion polls) damaged their public approval to an astonishing degree by botching the whole Brexit mess: but unfortunately (for Britain) - no one else had a real alternative plan. Or the ability to sell it to the voters.

And yes, Jeremy Corbyn has been, for several years, the victim of a media-wide and incessant campaign of negative attention - verging on smear most of the time - which tarnished his public image to a huge degree. But then, neither he nor Labour seem to have done a great deal to counter the negativity: and in the end, it seems to have been the deciding stake-though-the-heart.
