Got CL’d.

“I don’t know of any crime that was committed where the actual victim wasn’t aware of it.”

1. The President of the United States is publicly admitting to being a criminal.
2. And he’s implying that as long as the victim is AWARE OF THE CRIME, there’s no problems.

JFC.

Also, the orange asshole is going to the Army/Navy game in Philly today to try and get himself more cheers.

I had no idea!

In England, Coroners Decide What Is Treasure and What Is Not
“It’s a bizarre holdover from a previous age.”
by Isaac Schultz, Atlas Obscura

… In 1194, Richard the Lionheart’s England was financially strapped by the Crusades abroad and a suite of issues at home. The kingdom was in want of a bureaucratic upgrade if it was to survive. Few people were more qualified to orchestrate this managerial makeover than Walter Hubert, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Among the rules Hubert outlined in his Articles of Eyre was a new sort of county officer, one who could help settle local matters and, in the process, ensure a steady flow of revenue into the crown’s coffers. Hubert invented something called a coroner.
“The etymology of the word coroner comes from ‘crown’ and ‘crowner,’ and for centuries, they’ve been the crown’s representative in the regions,” says Ian Richardson, the Treasure Registrar at the British Museum, which today houses the finds from Sutton Hoo. In medieval rural England, coroners were the crown incarnate. They organized local juries and supervised county elections, looked into premature or suspicious deaths, and seized the assets of those who died with no clear heirs. …

This is one of those bits that really should be brought up, if not in the debate next week on the articles, then at the Senate “trial,” that the Repubs can’t have it both ways. If the hold was meant as a way to test whether Zelensky was serious about anti-corruption practices, then it makes no senses whatsoever to keep him the dark about said hold. And if the hold was not meant as leverage to test Zelensky, then there’s no real legit excuse for it.

There was some bitching the other day about the narrowness of the Articles, that Pelosi was not slapping on others related to items like emoluments and obstruction of justice with regards to the Mueller investigation. Thing is, given the statements by Senate Repubs both before and after the announcement of such, it was probably the smartest course of action to keep them out.

Why? Because Trump and his goons are gonna crow that no matter how crooked a trial we witness, he was “EXONERATED!!!” and thus the matter(s) are closed. So the wisest step when we’ve still got investigations into those other items going on and court cases still awaiting rulings is to avoid prematurely going to “trial.” Yeah, odds are we’re not going to impeach again unless he wins reelection, BUT it also makes any claims that he’s been “cleared” absolutely hollow.

That’s what was on stark display on Thursday, that one party was talking checks-and-balances and divisions of power, while the other was not simply arguing unlimited executive authority but actually declaring that people had a duty to cover his ass.

From what I can see, the White Aryan Brotherhood sign is the middle finger and thumb as a ring and the remaining fingers spread out. I know there is a variant used by a racist organization which uses the ring finger.

This iteration, spread over the chans-which-shall-not-be-named uses the index finger. It’s like someone intentionally spread the meme, but the official explanation tries to get the culprits off on a technicality.

Supposably is a real word and separate from supposedly. Supposably means “as may be conceived or imagined” and is the adverb form of supposable, which means “capable of being supposed or conceived.” On the other hand, supposedly usually means “allegedly.” The words are often conflated when one usually intends to say “supposedly.”

Indeed. But the point of apparent injection into behavior and other details suggest someone might be trying to create plausible deniability for something which at the end of the day is a White Supremo sign.

If they’re not arguing that the “liberal media” was in his pocket, they’re outright suggesting that people were afraid to speak their minds about him because of fear of the “cancel culture” BS. When you’re constantly nursing a persecution complex, there’s always a reason why you’re the one being singled out that’s totally at odds with the facts.

and i think i was agreeing

i was saying obama didnt have the press in his pocket - there was a concerted ‘he’s not even an american’ campaign. and he managed to do the job, function every day without griping about ‘unfair’ and get reelected anyway

re: #147 HappyWarrior

That’s why I’m optimistic. I’ve seen him turn off more people than turn people on to him. He was able to project himself as an empty slate to some extent three years ago. Now he has to defend his record. And I can’t see Middle America responding too well to a President who is too chickenshit to defend his record in a debate and one who keeps on lying. I don’t know what the results will be but I can’t see Trump gaining voters from 3 years ago.

re: #146 calochortus

Ya know, 4 years ago when he told us that “he alone” could fix this that and the other thing, I could see where people could believe him. Like a good con man he was persuasive (if one didn’t think too deeply about it.) Now? No. He rants and makes snarky remarks. His base loves it, as ever, but I don’t see it persuading people whose lives aren’t going where they thought they were.

The problem is that now that he’s the incumbent, he doesn’t have to persuade people to necessarily vote for him. Just to not vote for Dems. And the electorate constantly and consistently seems hungry for any and all reason to punch Dems in the mouth and kick us in the dick for good measure. And with 2020 being such an important election for the state of the playing field for the next decade, if enough voters fall into the ‘both sides same thing (but dems are clearly worse)’ bullshit trap, no amount of demo advantage is going to prevent the damage the GOP will wreak.

To Add: look at just how ridiculous the coverage of both the impeachment and anything primary related is: we’re already seeing best attempts to suppress votes based precisely on making the Dems out to be the evil gov’t subverty ones, and if not that, then the same ole DNC ‘SUPER-RIGGED!’ boogeyman. It’s not going to matter how demographics shift change or how much people dislike Trump if they’re still going to hold their nose and stick with him or just vote (or don’t vote) to spite Dems, and got help me, it feels like there’s an infinite amount of voters like that on all sides.

This is the shit we’re up against, and between the census and future court holdings, 2020 is gonna be a lynchpin. And I’m not sure how we’re going to get past this amount of institutional fuckery.

Strange are my dreams at time… this morning I dreamt I was JFK, in a room, with a blond woman… newspaper slides under door, then an envelope. The the door opens and a balding man is standing there, which I should recognize.

All of which, upon reflection, took me down the path that led me to this web page:

Bing Crosby’s Palm Desert House - Where JFK Trysted with Marilyn Monroe

The Jimmy Van Heusen (composer, friend of Bing’s and the gang’s) house next door, mentioned in the article, is currently for sale:

Which is exactly why a Democratic congress and president must redefine what the general roles of companies are in this country, in that they are not first and foremost beholden to shareholders to make profits at all costs.

So, I’m looking at this McKinsey stuff and holy shit.

“Propublica obtained McKinsey’s 2010 internal history, in which employees are told that the firm is comparable to “the Marine Corps, the Roman Catholic Church, and the Jesuits” in that it is “analytically rigorous, deeply principled seekers of knowledge and truth” married with a sense of shared values that exceeds what even the Catholic Church can promise.”

These people literally think they are bigger than God.

Just ingested an edible. I’ll report back soon. Oh, wait. I thought you said “higher than God.” Carry on.

I saw Parasite today. It’s the latest from South Korean director Bong Joon-Ho. It was really good. On the poster there’s a “best film of the decade” quote. I would absolutely not go that far. Great director and writer; great film. In some ways takes on the same themes as The Shoplifters, an equally great film, but from a different angle.

good AM. (oops)

i mentioned this - no it wasnt my idea - i heard it first from lawrence tribe months ago now it may be gaining some traction because of the public delarations of mitch, lindsey etc

Joy Reid asked Joaquin Castro about it on MSNBC.

The Senate Republicans are making a mockery of our democracy. Pelosi should table the full house vote. (if the house votes, they *have* to send the articles to the senate).

Then hold a press conference laying out the charges and say, “the Republicans in the Senate lead by Mitch McConnell have made it clear a fair trail is not a possibility, we are not going to send these serious charges to a rigged jury, we will let the American people be the jury in the upcoming election”.

As another smart person put it, Merrick Garland the impeachment charges, thus denying Trump the talking point of saying he was acquitted and denying assholes like Graham the opportunity to make mockery out of the process.

some people think its a bad idea, and not without reason. I think it’s a stunning winner and it works as long as the house never sends these articles

trump et al cannot claim the charges are ‘weak’ or the dems are scared. just point to the rigged jury video clips over and over.

meanwhile keep investigating.
